so i asked about how the payback works if i decide to pursue a residency and this is the reply i received...

"If you decide to do a residency than you would have to payback whatever
is the greatest the scholarship or the residency."

is this true? (this is for the army btw)

As I understand it, yes, this is true. Your scholarship payback is concurrent with residency payback. For instance, if you were on the 4-year HPSP and then get a 2-year AEGD straight out of dental school, you would start the 2-year AEGD, and then after completing that, you would serve 4 years of active duty (repaying 4 years HPSP and 2 years residency concurrently) and then you would have two years reserve duty left since the AEGD counts as the other two years of reserve duty (8-year commitment in all). Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

So, I guess to answer your question more directly, if you had a 6-year residency straight out of dental school (not sure if there is one this long?), you would pay back your 6 years and 4 years at the same time, but the 4 year HPSP would now be paid back two years before the 6-year residency, whereas before, the 2 year AEGD would be paid back two years into your 4-year HPSP payback.

Although I can't speak for other services, I am in the Navy and I would guess that the other services have similar programs. If the Navy sends you to specialty training IN the Navy (at their programs in Bethesda, Maryland) then, yes, your payback is concurrent - you pay back your dental school and post-grad commitment at the same time. But if you are accepted to do "out-service" training (civilian programs) then you will have to pay them back consecutively - meaning if you owe 4 yrs for dental school and 3 years for specialty training, you will owe a total of 7 years. I would definitely get clarification from an Army dentist if that is a concern for you. Hope this helps.
