Sorry guys I just heard the news that several "cheaters" I knew got accepted to dental schools. It just made me sick!😡 I felt disgust!🙁

These several punk kids from my school have beat the system all the time! They have cheated entire their college years and they still got accepted to dental school b/c they've got a good grades("CHEATERS"). Never caught!
It's just sad story........Adm comm would never know they are the real bad 'cheaters'....I wished they would knew and realize and reject them but I guess it's hard to tell by just looking at the paper and 30 minutes of interview. I think it's the way the society is...blind spot always exist....I really hope they would suck at the school and kicked out of school soon! I want some real justice!!! There's so many students who worked their *** off but could not get in!!
If there's God, God should punish these cheaters!! Plz.....!!

How did they cheat? Copy of exams? Omitted bad grades? Lie in the interview?

Mostly they cheated copying others exams without studying any materials.
Some will say it's their skill to do the cheating without getting caught but still it's very unfair to who studied their *** off every night. One of my friend who is hard worker still did not get in though she has similar gpa as those @#$@ who got in. She worked hard everyday to get the high gpa but these punks did nothing but cheating. I wish those who really deserves will get in to dental school! 🙂

I do not think that they can get away with cheating in DS. If they did not learn how to study hard, they will fail dental school quickly. I guess that will be their punishment.

you should have reported the incidents immediately to the professor or whoever was proctoring the test. for sure the cheaters would have had to answer to higher authorities and had it put on their records.

I think that was my mistake. I thought they would have caught by professors or ta in the end or they would not get in to dental school. In the end, it's my fault, too. I should have reported it. Shame on me.😡

They won't get away with cheating at dental school. They will flunk. You will be rewarded with a DDS/DMD while they will have to explain why they flunked or honor code violations in dental school if they find themselves having to reapply. Not reporting it is not a big deal because its their career that is at stake. As to your friend not getting in, it is hard to pinpoint as to why he/she didn't get in.

Things like these happen at all points in life. I mean, we can also talk about those med school rejects who end up in dental school, without having any passion for dentistry as such (like all us pre-dents do). But, what can we do. Life's just like that.

But, perpetual cheaters eventually get caught at some point in time.

Yeah, and the later they get caught the higher the stakes.

there's nothing you can do about it, complaining about it wouldn't change the situation..it sucks though.... just focus on you

::Scratches head:: Even cheaters have to be able to get a good score on the DAT and so must have a grasp of the general sciences. Never fear. If they cheat in dental school, they will get kicked out...and no matter what anyone says, it is EXTREMELY unlikely if not IMPOSSIBLE to get into another school after an incident like that. Worry about yourself. If you did well enough, you will get in. Forget about the others. Life isn't fair, unfortunately. 🙁

This thread is too funny...how do you cheat on a physics exam? DAT? I know that at my undergrad school, students near each other were all given different versions of the test. It would be virtually impossible to cheat your way through hard science courses and still get the kind of grades you need to get into dental school, let alone the knowledge required for the DAT. Copying off of other people...how do you know that the person will get an A? You don't and it just doesn't work, at least not as well as you would need it to to get into dental school. Even if by the grace of God if it somehow works for someone, dental school will not be easy. They could probably cheat their way through a good bit of it, but not the boards.

Are you sure you are not just bitter that your friend didn't get in and that you just really don't like these "punks"?

I think this is an important statement. I'm not condoning the actions of cheaters at all, but just because someone you know didn't get in doesn't mean that those that did get in don't deserve it.

What I'm saying is that if your friend didn't get in, but worked their butt off than maybe they really didn't deserve to get in. Nothing against your friend, but each of us takes our own fate into our own hands when applying to dental school. The only people that keep us from getting accepted are ourselves.

one time, i saw 2 kids in my anatomy lab class steal a brian model home with them. they just put their sweatshirt over it and walked out. i told the professor via email and never saw those 2 again.

that's not the worse of it. cheating is one thing, but paying the administrative staff bribes to change your grade in the database is another. There was an incident like that that happened in a community college. A handful of these students got accepted to UCBerkeley and even Standford. However, justice was served when a faculty member at the CC reported what was going on. He did suffer the lost of his job because people thought he was in on it too. Those students at the university of their choice were never caught tho. That's the sad part.

Some of the more obscure community colleges are bound to have some pretty unsavory individuals working. It's really tragic that stuff like this happens.

I know a few people who says they don't study, and "sleep" in class, copy each other on test, whatever. But in reality, they go home and sleep about 4 hours a night (which is why they end up falling asleep in class). They bascially study when no one is aware of it, and does it constantly. Hence, to us, they don't seem to ever study and never lets off knowing anything. But comes test time, they will burn us to the ground.

I say this because I do not see how you can cheat your way through college. I mean four years.! no way.! (unless that college is mess up some how) either that or they have serious capabilities to do the cheating, which if you use that capabilities to study, they will would have burned us anyways. haha...

House did it 😛

I know I'll get flamed for this, but I don't think cheating in school is really as bad as many say. I know some people that only cheat in classes thats not needed for the DAT or in Dental school. I've known people to cheat in physics, political science, sociology, psychology, etc. They do however study for Biology, chemistry, and Ochem, things needed for the DAT and on. If they take the risk of getting caught and are good enough to get away with it, why not? Especially if they can do it all throughout college. If some people find some way to cheat through undergrad and dental school and not get caught, they've still got to be pretty smart people. Perhaps not book smart, but smart non the less.

It's so weird what we pcik up on. I am deeply offended that you called these two people punks. I doubt it matters to anyone else, but being a punk, I don't like the use of that term to somehow denote cheating.

They may be smart...but that doesn't mean they should be dentists. I'm sure Richard Branson, a multibillionaire, is a very book and street smart fella, but I wouldn't trust him to be my dentist. Nor would I want two people who cheated their way through classes like Oral Pathology, Radiologic Diagnosis, Endodontics, etc. to be my dentist. Just cause they're smart enough to cheat through dental school, doesn't mean they LEARNED any dentistry in the process, and I wouldn't want those two people to be in my profession as representatives of it.

In my school we had 4 versions, all with the same questions in different order with same answer choices in different order. If you can figure out that my 14 is your 17 and your B is my D, its not that hard to cheat. Then you can corroborate with the rest of the tests around you to make sure you have the popular answer. And this is only for multiple choice, the ones with written answers are probably easier to copy.
I don't cheat but if I wanted to, its not that hard. Different versions are a joke, a professor can't give two people completely different tests, what if one is harder?
I know people who would cheat at three page essays just by looking for key words to base their essay around. And I would not want it on my conscience to get them expelled from school. Life will sort them out and if they are smart enough to pass the DAT and boards, then more power to them. They fought the law and won.

Just because they cheated through college doesn't mean they won't make a good dentist. Some may cheat, but may be very passionate about being a dentist and work really hard at it. Some people just have the characteristic to be lazy when it comes to things they're not interested in, but excel greatly in things they're passionate about.

Brilliant! I think everyone "cheats" in things they are not interested in, at the very least because they put in the minimal effort possible. Besides, no one is getting in or through dental school based on their cheating skills alone. Its kinda hard to cheat on practicals anyways.

Are your professors in the room watching your or do they just put you in seats right next to each other, go to lunch and tell you to behave as you take their examinations?

Don't worry, they will be in jail in a few years when they cheat on their taxes and cheat patients out of money

The honor code at my school says that if I don't turn in a cheater, then I am open to disciplinary action myself. I've only had to bust two people before, one got expelled (second strike) and the other was booted from the class and suspended for the semester.

I'll bet you are a popular guy

There are cheaters in my dental school too.

They cheat by studying all the time or having had a great pre-dent education in undergrad so they come into these science classes knowing a ton of stuff already.

As far as I know, we don't have any of the sneak a peak at your paper kind of cheaters, but even if we did, they wouldn't be trying to look at my paper.

Cheaters - what can I say - the person who started this thread is one bitter dude. You are so bitter it is not funny. You are green with envy. Firstly, which university do you attend, is it some chumped up, just-come, wack institution that doesn't protect the integrity of its grades.

I attend U of T and that sort of cheating is pretty useless and would not get one very far. Several methods make it unlikely:

1. Different exam versions
2. Color coded exams so no two exams are beside each other
3. Adeqate space between students
4. A multitude of invigilators (proctors) who constantly pace the room
5. Accompanied to bathrooms

and I like this one

6. Time constraints on exams - some exams have such limited time that the time you spend cheating would cause you to be incomplete

If you expect me to believe that some kid aced on calc, orgo, english, inorganic, and all his biology courses purely by cheating - i think you are nutts. And if he did and managed to get into university, I suggest you and your pityful friend learn their methods for it is clearly effective

I have to agree with the last statement. And if this was going to make you so sick, why didn't you speak up and say something about it? I always tell people, how could you get upset that your friend was cheating, and you sat back and watched it. In my mind like I said before, if the matter was going to make me that upset and stressed, than i would be mad at myself for not speaking up.

ha - i dont know if I can actually get in trouble at my school for not turning someone in....... but I do know...... HOW do you know people are cheating? that means that you must be looking around the room/ looking at other people. When i get a test; a) i am so concentrated on the test that a bomb could go off next to me and I would not even notice..... i mean when i took the DAT for 4 hours, people all over the room were loud and i literally did not hear one thing they said or did or anything......

To be perfectly honest.... and this probably applies to most in this forum..

I do not CARE one bit about other people in my classes..... let them cheat!!!
I have way more important things to worry about than being a snitch and having to watch my back..... i just look at those types and laugh....

now lets say " i tried to turn in someone who was talking during a test" the teacher is going to say something.... then it is going to be my word agaisnt the other students word and they are not going to be able to prove they were cheating... and all that happens is that I look like a snitch loser....

I take care of my own grades...... if 2 ******s are cheating off each other they are not going to get a higher score than me anyway...

I understand that it might be "wrong" for not turning in cheaters but I just feel I have better things to do than get involved in some garbage..

SOrry for the long post.... people have talked about this many times before and the amount of snitches is much more than expected.... what types of schools do people attend? I have never seen such garbage.....

This bring up the point - Some universities suck and some are ok. It is a responsiblity of the instutions we attend to ensure that the environment is hostile for cheaters. I can bet, top univesities like Mcgill, U of Toronto, Harvard, oxford, Cornell, MIT etc have tough standards against cheating.

I really don't think being a top university has anything to do with policies on cheating. At my school, we have different tests and have to have seats between each person. In some of my classes we have to put all of our bags in the front of the room. And as someone else pointed out, we definitely do not have the time to cheat during our tests. What kind of time restraints do you guys have on your tests? I felt like I didn't even have enough time to breathe during my organic tests, let alone look at someone else's paper (who probably would have the wrong answer anyway).

Every D-school should have an honor code up, and part of that honor code REQUIRES you to report any instances of cheating. If you know that someone in your class has cheated and you don't report it, you WILL be punished if the professor/administration learns that you did not report an instance of cheating. Along with the cheater of course, provided they know who it is.

If these guys spend their dental school careers cheating on tests, it's all but a certainty that they'll be reported. And if they make it through d-school without cheating, then good for them.

You clearly haven't taken ANT322 then. To get an A in that course, all you need to do is enroll for it on ROSI and show up for the exams (without studying anything). Oh, yeah, you definitely need some friends who know their stuff. 😛

But, apart from a few courses, yes, cheating is fairly difficult at UofT. Plus, whether you cheat or not, you end up getting the same grade anyway. It's all bell-curved. 👎

I do know of someone who not only cheated, but lied big time on their application. He's in Temple now, 2nd year.

Hiya streetwolf,
so you are brandeis grad.

I think the important thing about reporting is that you have to be reasonably sure about it that what you saw was cheating.

Yeah, I don't really care about being popular with that crowd. I notice they are cheating when they are obviously looking at my paper. I get into the zone during a science/math test where I don't notice anything, but during humanities, or history or another class like that, I don't have to 'get in the zone' to do good. I notice everything around me.

I'm just a little curious. In many courses, there can only be so many A's and B's etc.. If you know somebody is cheating and that could potentially drop your grade (say you drop from being #5 of 5 available A's to #1 of 10 available B's) why would you sit back and let yourself get screwed, or anybody else in the class?

This is a good place to vent. I would suggest to get over it quickly and get back to working as hard as you can and worry about your grades and everything will work out.

You can't control what others do, but you can control the way it effects you.

👍

I agree...who gives a s*** what others are doing...as long you know your stuff you will do fine....and i don't think that two people cheating on an exam can lower your grade....
I know a girl in Electrical Engineering major, who copies hw and lab stuff from her friends and pretty much copies during her exams also. She has been warned twice also, but nope did not affect her. And the funniest thing is she made it to Dean's List in this Fall semester.....
But then IMO who gives a s***....

Cheaters never really bothers me unless they are cheating off from me. Then I would write all the wrong answers and let them copy. I did that in my O chem class and it was fun.

I figure if you catch someone cheating, you at least man up and tell them, to their face, to stop before you head to the admin.

I would report to the admin because if this blows up and the admin finds out before you tell them. They may take disciplinary action against you.

But how would the admin know you saw someone cheating? There is no way anyone can prove you actually noticed anything.

I guess they can't unless it was pretty obvious that you could see the incident.

some people will always find a way to cheat the system. i know two people personally who went to my high school. one of them is definitely in the top 3 most intelligent people i know and the other is a student of above average intelligence i would say. these guys have PERFECTED cheating on multiple choice exams. we're talking about midterms in lecture theaters as well as in the gymnasiums where we sometime take our finals (sitting in columns behind each other).

one time the cheater was gloating about he pwned his physiology final cheating off the cheatee. the tests were scrambled as such:

test 1 had questions from 1-100, while the order of the questions on test 2 were reversed. Additionally, question 1 on test 1 started at question 25 or so on test 2. so, we have reversed order, and a shuffle of the beginning of the exam. LASTLY, the order of the answers was also reversed so that a) on one exam was e) of the other etc.

needless to say, the cheater did quite well. this is at a respected university in which cheating is a very serious offense and is rigorously monitored. it's not a matter of getting away due to lax cheating prevention. these guys have cheated where desks are separated, tests are color coded, you name it. does it piss me off? hell yes. but it's getting the better grade when i've worked my butt off that makes that grade so much more satisfying and i rub it in his face. and yes, i've done that.

the cheatee is now in law school and the cheater didn't get in. he's applying for his second time this year and we'll see how it works out. cheating can only get you so far. you can't cheat your way in entirely.

moral of the story: look out for number one and forget about cheaters. it will eventually catch up to them.

I know someone who has cheated pretty much through all his bio classes. He gets the gist of the material then tries to make friends in the library with people in his class that he thinks are smart. Finds ones that are smart enough and talks about studying together which is actually a ploy to eventually allow him to sit next to the smart person for the exams.

How the hell do these cheaters get good scores on the DAT? Cheat on that too?

By the time he did all that he could have just learned the material
