waiting to hear, too. it's probably the last school to send out decisions! from previous experience we should expect to have decisions in hand around May 4-6. try not to get too worked up about UH, though the wait is painful. Good luck! 😉

--but a little worked up 🙂 i assume 808, from your sn, that you are a hawaii res? as a non-res, i'm just thinking over and over about the top 6 non-res getting class spots and the other 40-some filled by residents. you think writing an update letter or something similar would be beneficial? or just wait to see how the stars allign...

is JABSOM your top choice? i'm also a little iffy on how the $6.1 million shortfall for the new kakaako campus will be resolved....can tuition (non-res) get any higher???--

beth-the name is more "future-plans"-oriented....i, too, lived there for 6 months and fell in love....i also see it as "bound by bcn" since i have a whole collection of memorabilia (catalan flags, posters, etc.) and can't stop telling people about the place...good luck with hawaii....we can be out-of-staters together!

Yup, I'm from Hawaii. I know it's REALLY tough getting one of the six spots, but even residents have a hard time getting in, too. 275 applicants for 52 spots is pretty darn competitive 😱 So many applicants apply over and over. I was thinking of writing a letter of intent, but it looks like (from the interview letter) that they don't want applicants to send extra material. Plus, applicants are ranked after the interview, so a letter may be of little use. I would just wait, but it might be a good idea to call and see if a letter would be useful...I know the admissions staff, and they're pretty cool. Getting interviews at JABSOM as a non-resident is quite an accomplishment! Congratulations! 👍

Oh, yeah, forgot to say that UH is my top choice...but I doubt I'm their top choice of applicant! According to my med student friends and the local news, there are talks of the tuition increasing quite a bit over the next six or seven years (especially for non-res). I don't want to spread rumors so try calling the admissions office and see what they say if tuition is a big issue for you.

That's so cool that we have the love of Barcelona in common. People got sick of me talking about it too. Have you seen L'Auberge Espanol? I saw it while I was there, which was great because I really related to it.

ABeth-l'auberge espanol IS the best movie!!! it came out in spain after i had left...and didn't show up in seattle until the following year!!!! so i had to wait and wait while my buds from spain, england, ireland, germany, france, and belgium (my own l'auberge) told me all about it....and i also went and bought it the first day it was released on DVD :O) still enjoying it... 👍 👍

btw, when interviewing with dr. izutsu, he mentioned that he interviewed a girl who also lived in barcelona for 6months...a nanny/aupere...is that you???? if not, that means there could be another bcn fan in the class!!!!

good impression indeed! especially since he interviewed 40 out-of-staters....if we both go to jabsom, we can practice spanish 😀 and knowing how the school allows/encourages students to do short-term shadowing/interships/etc. around the pacific--though mostly asia-pacific--i'm hoping to maybe tie in the otherside, too....latin america 🙂 ...then again, i wouldn't turn down an opportunity to study in japan....

i enjoyed the izutsu interview....more information session actually....in fact all 3 interviews were easygoing and stress-free....i interviewed late late....feb 28-mar 1.....

woa...now i'm really excited to find out!!!!

I interviewed those same days! Izutsu on Feb 28th and the other two on the previous Thursday and Friday. So, the dean would have to be senile to forget about my Barcelona experience. Haha! Oh well. I can't believe we were in Honolulu at the same time.

You mentioned Dr. Izutsu interviewed 40 out-of-staters. I thought it was over 100. I asked him how many out-of-staters are interviewed, and he said he didn't have the final count but last year they had 115. Where did you hear 40?

We should definitely write a join letter of intent, promising to start up a Spanish Language Club and to lead an internship program in Costa Rica. Maybe they'd show us some aloha! Just kidding... I probably won't even write my own letter. I feel like I should just relinquish control (or my sense of it) and be patient...

i recall izutsu telling me that i was one of 40 out-of-staters....and 200-some residents....if it's over 100 i better start shaking now!!!! haha j/k regardless, it's pretty stiff competition for both res and non-res.

I sure hope you heard right about the 40. That makes our chances almost 3 times better. Just because they interviewed 115 last year doesn't mean it would be the same this year. Maybe people got scared of the idea of moving to the Pacific after the tsunamis and turned down interviews.

I can't believe we have to wait over a month! Errr. It's either Hawaii or miserably cold Philly or miserably conservative Augusta, Georgia. I want to eat bento boxes for lunch and bask in the sun while I study.

Thanks for finding out for sure! Good luck with the letter. I know it might sound stupid, but the posibility of being re-evaluated kind of scares me. So I'm not sure if I will write a letter- I might get a lower "score" with my luck! But, then again, it usually can't hurt.

marilyn emailed me back and said she did not have exact numbers...but that they were most likely similar to last year.....~275 total interviewed out of 1350 applicants...i'm still thinking the number of out-of-staters interviewed was about 45...regardless, for all, to get a rank number 1-52 (for us, o-o-s #1-6) is going to be stiff competition. best of luck almond! our wait will be over before you know it! 🙂

welcome projectile--guess it'll depend on how many of the top 6 turn JABSOM down to go elsewhere. for me, it's JABSOM or reapply to UWash, UCs, etc...you think they will even have a waitlist for non-res? i recall reading/hearing that they will take UP TO 6 non-res....(which means, if 3 of the 6 say no, they fill those spots with residents?)...ouch, not gonna think about it...time to chillax in sunny & 85 So Cal 😎

First of all it is either UH or I apply to UWash and other such schools as well. When I talked to the dean of admissions at my interview he said that they were going to rank all the applicants all together. Then, if there are more than six out of staters they would cut off there and add more in state. Those who got cut off would just go back into the waiting list, hopefully in the front. However they way I understood it was if any out of stater turned down an acceptance then it would just go to the next person on the list (out of state or in state).

i don't think there are separate acceptance lists/waitlists for res and non-res....similar to almond, i was told that all applicants (in and out) are ranked together #1-275ish...i.e., no seperate lists for in and out of staters.....#1-52 are looked at.....only the top 6 outies are granted acceptance (be it #1,4,6,19,20,21 - out of 1-52; or #35,39,40,47,49,52 out of 1-52).....say there are only 5 outies in the top 52....if you are #6 outie, but #65 in the total pool...then too bad....likewise, if you are #16 in the total pool, but the #7 outie...then too bad...

that's what i got out my interview with dr. izutsu....who knows how it really goes....we'll find out in a few weeks

the PBL curriculum at JABSOM is attractive. there is a focus on community/native hawaiian medicine and health. i have friends who are current med students and some wish they accepted mainland school…others are too happy to be at the UH. the peer teaching may be difficult at times; there is a lot of learning on your own. as with any med school, how you manage your time/studying will determing your success. i look forward to the international opportunities for studying and working (asia, southeast asia, pacific islands—hoping to maybe start a program in latin america). i have a particular interest in emerging infectious disease research and admire the researchers at JABSOM in this field. it will be exciting to watch the growth of the new neuroscience/neuroimaging dept. the new kaka’ako campus is state-of-the-art. among many other attractive qualities…the location on the beach and the weather cannot be beat. if you are considering USMLE scores, they are equal to or (more recently) above the national average. this year, 4th years matched to competitive residencies on the mainland (e.g., stanford, ucla). dean Cadman, from yale, the administration, and the faculty are working hard to improve and maintain the reputation of the school. best of luck in your endeavors.

i've looked and looked for a complete list....instead, i've found local newspaper articles about match day 2005.....try starbulletin.com and honoluluadvertiser.com......they list a couple.......there is a match day tradition....take a look

the few i've talked to are from my college (claremont mckenna...also pomona)....they are from hawaii, but went to school on the mainland....now hawaii is a little "small"......i also think you may find more "opportunities" in a big city (say, LA) that you can find on an island.....both med and non-med related activities....but i do think hawaii itself has a lot of culture to offer a non-res....and the school does prefer doctors who will stay and work in the isles....but, if you return to the mainland, i'm sure you will leave without regrets....the island life is quite comfortable 😎

ohh i think they just opened up the med school to the incoming students last week. since i'm in the premed association at UH-Manoa right now as an undergrad, i'm planning to take one of them tours 🙂


i really can't wait till i apply there, hopefully by next year. i already know a few medstudents there, so i hope to learn alot from their mentoring and advice. but yeah, if all else fails, i plan to go into the imi ho'ala program which is a post-bacc program which after, you can be admitted into the incoming medschool class. thank goodness im a local-born 👍

i've learned that this med school process is so random at times. i interviewed march 1 and was complete on march 11. oh i can almost count the remaining days on my fingers and toes (including mail delivery) :O) a little restless because i'm trying to make summer plans 😎

I was just curious because we find out in early May and then have two months to get everything organized. I really hope at least one person from this site gets some good news. It made me sad when I did a search of JABSOM for last year. Everybody got either rejected or waitlisted.

I haven't looked at apartments, don't wanna get my hopes up-- did you try craiglist? They have a Honolulu section.

I just moved from Hawaii. My fiancee did her Master's at UH and we lived right across the street.

For Honolulu, try looking in the Honolulu Star Bulletin or Honolulu Advertiser, the two local papers. But what I'd recommend is finding a place that rents month to month then do the full on apartment hunt once you're local. If you try to apartment hunt from the mainland, get ready for a big bump in prices and a real drop in selection.

The nicest area to live in near campus is Manoa, but good cheap aparments are rare there. Another great neighborhood to look at is Mo'ili'ili, which is just south of the lower campus. There's lots of housing right near University and King, which is where most of the student bars and restaurants are.

A good technique is to actually walk around the neighborhood you want to live and look for Apartment for Rent signs. It's pretty relaxed over there.
