Jefferson Class of 2011 Class thread...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Who all is going to the financial aid session on Friday? Looking forward to meeting some of my new classmates. And, oh yeah, figuring out how I'm going to handle going a couple hundred thousand dollars in debt. 😱 😱 😱

definitely don't spend much time pre-reading for anatomy. if you were to devour the anatomy BRS the week before classes started, maybe that would help, but even that's doubtful. and casually reading some anatomy texts will not prepare you for anything.

the material is culled from a number of sources, as was mentioned. i tried using just one source for the first exam, and it was a disaster. study strategies pretty much go out the window with this class. cram as much as you can, and use as many sources as you can find.

the only strategy that may help you is to decide how much time you want to spend in the lab. dr. shea is great, but he makes one hell of a tough practical. to really nail them, i would have had to double my time preparing in there. it just wasn't worth it because you also have the written to think about. balance your time preparing for the two and focus on the areas where you think you can do well.

if there's anything that helped me, it was this: i made some very simple flashcards for the pharyngeal arches for the second exam. i forced myself to skim through them twice/day, but didn't think it would help much. i can't recall any exact numbers, but it felt as though a third of the written exam was based on pharyngeal arch development. i.e., Dr. Schmidt loves those arches!

if you read anything, learn some terminology. i majored in latin (with a little greek) in college and it's helped a great deal, at least in saving me the time of looking up roots, declensions, prefixes, suffixes, etc.

okay, back to FCM for me...🙁

good luck folks!

yeah, living in Michigan doesn't make it easy for me to get there... going to one at Wayne State next satuday instead.

...I'm now about 50/50 between jeff and wayne. Living in philly would be amazing and I consider jeff a more solid school, but Wayne is MUCH cheaper and it's hard to leave a group of very close friends going to Wayne.

Canada. No place too exciting, but is foreign nonetheless.

Well, technically I guess it's "foreign" but for some reason I don't think of Canada a "foreign country."

By the way, will you be attending Jefferson? I remember reading that you were considering going to a DO school to be with your boyfriend.

I am pretty sure that I will not be going DO. We have been arguing about it for the past few days and he says that I have "too many expectations"! If I am willing to give up a seat at Jefferson then I think that I should have expectations about our future together. I didn't give my deposit, which was due last night. I should be at Jefferson.

Expectations?? Damn, to give up a seat at Jeff for a DO school I'd want a ring on my finger ... and a BIG one at that!! And even then I'm not sure I would do it. Not that it's any of my business (and feel free to tell me it's not 🙂), but that line about "too many expectations" would send up major red flags in my mind. Good luck with everything!

Agreed. 🙂 I was wondering if anyone from the Boston area will be heading to Jefferson this fall. I am curious about how people are planning on going about hiring movers, apartment hunting, ect.

Not from Boston, from New York, and im not 100% sure if i am going to be attending Jeff just yet, but I would definitely get the student housing for the first year. Save the apt. hunting for later. Just my 2 cents. Also, as far as moving, all about Uhaul! haha.

Does anyone know when orientation actually starts? I've tried finding in on Jeff's website but I must be looking in the wrong place...I keep stumbling upon the 2006 calendar.

Also--who's planning on going to the 2nd look weekend?

not sure if the curriculum has changed recently, but orientation is usually the first week of august.

I'll be there! I look forward to meeting everyone 🙂

I posted this earlier:

1) Based on what I've seen while standing in line at the registrar's office, the class of 2011 has its orientation from Aug. 6-10th, with the white coat ceremony on Aug. 10th. (The white coat ceremony is nice. Hopefully everyone's family/SO can make it.)

2) Your first day of actual class is August 13th.

This info is from the registrar, so it ought to be pretty accurate. Hope this helps!

I'll be there, probably... though it's looking less and less likely like I'll be heading to Jeff now... but who knows... mabye second look will cause a swing in my decision.

Honestly, I really do think it's best to go where you feel comfortable and have a good support system. Luckily for me, my state schools (UMDNJ) are conveniently located between my residence and Jefferson. So, i'm not really moving anywhere. That being said, I do love me some soccer too, though I have a slight aversion for Mexico 😱; come football season though, it's all about the E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!

Count me in! I'll be headed there this fall all the way from the west coast. Man it's going to suck moving! I havent yet returned the financial aid package but when did everyone receive the housing package or is it online?

anyone know who to email to change my address? apparently emailing the admissions people does not elicit a sufficient response.

One thing im worried about is dealing with the rabid eagles fans. Giants baby!

Where is everybody? There has to be something we can talk about on this thread...

Just to double check, I was filling out the housing form and on the very bottom, you only have to list your top choice of where you want to live correct? And who's all going to second look again? I'm trying to look up fares and it doesn't look promising.

I'm going to be at second look too. I'm so excited to meet everyone!
My flight gets in really early on Thursday, around 12:30. Any ideas what I can do until the reception at 5?

I just got my MCAT back, 36. The thing is that my GPA when I apply sucks ass: 3.3 and 3.2 sci gpa. I'm a DE resident and will be applying this summer. I also have a cousin that is a 3rd year at Jeff right now. Do you think I have a shot? I emailed Dr. Callahan regarding the whole DIMER thing and she said all DE residents get their apps reviewed. Is that a big up?

Anyone at DE resident? Could you give me some info on how DIMER helped ur chances? Thanks.

Does anybody know anything about the med frats at Jefferson? Housing seems incredibly cheap with them and it seems like a good way to meet people. Any info, websites, emails, personal experiences? Thanks.

btw im going to second look weekend too.

my girlfriend (also in class of '09) is a DE resident and gets the DIMER scholarship. DE not having it's own medical school, the residents do quite well in the admissions process here at Jeff. no guarantees, but yes, it's a 'big up'. good luck!

i think some of the frats actually solicit applicants looking for housing. you should get an email or something similar from them soon. i don't have it handy right now but can look it up this weekend if you want.

i have a few friends in the frats (one of them is co-ed, btw), and i can't tell the difference between them and undergrad frats, to be honest. it's dirt cheap, the houses are huge with lots of bedrooms, they throw parties every few months (they are still in med school), etc., etc. if you want to save $ and you are willing to put up with living with other folks in a frat house, definitely check it out.

I assume you've read the post by JohnCunningham on the first page of this thread? That's the only information I've seen about Jefferson's frats.

Also, when is the "second look" weekend. Did you guys get something in the mail about that?

yeah i read it, went to the website, emailed the guy a while ago, and still no response. I just assumed they were busy or got lost in their inbox or the website is old or something like that. Aside from that website I have no other info.

Is anyone considering living off campus next year? I currently live in West Philly but can't see doubling my rent in order to live on campus. My wife and I are considering buying a place in the burbs and commuting in on Regional Rail. Is anyone else considering the same? If you are, please PM me as I'd love to discuss options and share resources (realator information, good neighborhoods, etc.)

Does anybody know when you can officially move into one of the three residence hall? I'm currently in DC right now and my lease runs out in June. I'm going out of the country for 3 weeks in july so I want to have my housing situation settle so I dont have to ship everything back to my parent's place in Califorina.

So they have a match list thread set up on pre-allo. Does anyone have Jefferson's?

I'm also wondering about housing because I will be out of the country for three weeks in July. Does anyone know when we get finaid packages??

I have Jefferson's, but it's on paper - I don't think their match list is available online. Maybe I'll be able to type it up in a few weeks...but I'm also hoping that one of the 4th years will beat me to the punch. Let me know if you'd like to see it very badly, and I'll try to hurry it up.

SOCIAL HOUR
If you are going to be a first year next year and currently live in the city or suburbs, any interest in meeting for happy hour drinks? I think it would be great to start getting to know some of you now.

Let me know! PM me or [email protected]

FISHING TRIP

I know its a ways off, but would any first years (or other years) be interested in doing a deep sea fishing trip down in atlantic city, maybe the week before orientation? I did it last summer with a bunch of friends and it was a blast. It's about $40-60 per person, depending on the number that go. The captain is a salty old guy who loves to regale you with wild stories of past trips. If you are interested, drop me a line.

Hey smq you don't have to rush in on posting it but it would be great to see the list. I'm just interested in seeing it.. no biggie. Thanks!

This is a recommendation from smq123:

The only classes where it's really advantageous to buy textbooks is anatomy (1st block: beginning of August - ~ Halloween), neuroscience (last block: beginning of May - mid June), and Intro to Clinical Medicine 1 (ICM 1, which is year round). You should know that all classes put copies of their required textbooks on reserve in the library. Furthermore, in some classes (especially in 2nd year), textbooks are designated as "required" because a) required textbooks can be returned to the bookstore whereas recommended textbooks can't be, and b) Financial Aid factors that in to your yearly cost of living.

For anatomy, you'll almost certainly need a textbook (probably the one that they recommend), an atlas, a dissector, and maybe a photographic atlas (Rohen). They recommend an anatomy textbook - I don't know which one it will be next year, but that'll be the one that you buy, most likely. (Unless Dr. Schmidt recommends Ger again for some inexplicable reason. I hope that he sticks with Grey or Moore again.) You might want to get a copy of Moore's Developing Human textbook for embryo, but...um...I would say that you don't really need it. All of the embryo stuff that was on the test is covered in lecture. If you're confused, then go to the library and read the reserve copy for a couple of hours. But I don't know if you truly need to purchase it.

For the atlas, almost everyone uses Netter. For reasons that I canNOT fathom, Dr. Schmidt and Dr. Shea dislike Netter (even though Dr. Schmidt uses Netter images for lecture), and adore Grant. I hated Grant - they looked like anime versions of actual anatomy. You can get a copy of Netter for "free" if you join AMSA. The Rohen photographic atlas is a "maybe" - if you like going to lab a lot to study for the practicals, then you won't need it. And you'll have to get a dissector, or at least chip in with your anatomy lab table mates to buy one. You might be able to get (a clean) one for cheap from other students in previous years. There's a forum on Jefferson's student website (pulse.jefferson.edu - you have to be a registered student to get on there) where you can find used books. Once you get your campus key from IT, I can tell you where to look. Optional books include the BRS, which I did find useful (but not everyone agrees with me).

For neuroscience, you'll need a copy of Nolte's textbook, and a neuro atlas.

For ICM 1, you'll need to get a copy of one of Fadem's textbooks - I forget the title. (Barbara Fadem has the Step 1 behavioral science market cornered - she wrote the BRS, High Yield, and, I think, the chapter in First Aid on the subject.) You actually will need it, because that's where the test questions come from, even though you'll never use it in lecture. Again, you can buy it from a 4th year or something. The school will require you to read "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down," because you'll discuss it in small group at some point. I think it's a waste to buy the book, because you only discuss it once. If you're on a very tight budget and unless you really like the book on its own merit, borrow it from the public library or share the cost with your roommate or something.

You might like an atlas for histology, but it's not necessary, especially since all of the slides are now computerized. It's up to you on that one.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I have a question for current Jeff students who live/lived in Barringer or Orlowitz....after looking at the room plan it seems like the bedrooms are kinda small! And is it true that the apartments are unfurnished? I was just wondering how big the rooms are and where you guys bought (cheap) furniture 🙂

I'm really interested in seeing Jeff's match list too! I wish it was online!

Got the call today! Woo hoo!

The 1-bedrooms in Orlowitz (from personal experience) are small. The bedroom and living room size is decent (you can fit a king size matress, a dresser, tv, etc, in the bedroom and you still have space to move around). The kitchen though, that's another story. It's SMALL, tiny (well, at least for me). The apts are unfurnished (I'm not sure 100% though, you should ask the housing dept) but we brought our furniture from the cross-country move so we didn't have to buy anything. People buy stuff from IKEA, but I think you can get good deals from craigslist or students that are moving out. Hope this helps!

90% sure i will be at jeff next year. i am really excited. see you all at 2nd look?

by the way, we really need to change something at jefferson. this whole jefferson arts thing that is abbreviated jeff arts but all the letters are written together as jeffarts so it looks like jef farts. not cool, not cool.

 i've never seen that, i like jeff hope, jeff stat, and jeff others but i have never heard of jef farts, oops, i meant jeff arts. :meanie:

The current president of Phi Alpha Sigma is Austin Daly. I am sure that if you are really interested in living there you could probably figure out his email address. Also, you could write him a letter. I do not have info about the other houses, but I am sure Austin could find it for you.

Can anyone provide some specific information about Second Look this year? I was accepted a week ago and just received my official acceptance card in the mail yesterday. I have not received anything about Second Look and really am interested in checking out the school further. Thanks for the help! 🙂

Hey there!

I got my info on the second look a few weeks ago, so what I'm about to type I'm reading off the paper right now.

Second look is from April 26-27. on Thursday there's a welcome reception from 5-7 pm for us. On Friday our day should start at 8:30 am with breakfast, then there's all kinds of features, like a financial aid overview, curriculum update, community outreach etc...the most interesting part of the day in my opinion will be the lunch with Jeff students and faculty at 12 pm, and the clinical tours at 1:15 pm....basically the day will finish at 4 pm.

We're suppose to confirm our attendance by April 12; also, they should be sending a student host list for us to find someone to stay with during that time (i haven't received mine yet)....you can choose to attend both the thursday and friday events or just the one on Friday.

Hope that helps!

Hey there gang. Was anyone else from the Feb. 28 interview. I got my acceptance call from Dr. Callahan exactly 2 weeks after my interview!! I'm from Hawaii, so moving to Philly is definitely a really big change for me. Anyone else from the islands going to Jefferson?

Alos, I haven't received my housing application yet. Does anyone know when we're supposed to receive it? I was hoping to receive it by the end of March at the most.

Does anyone have any advice on furnishing a one bed room in barringer? Where's the best place to get some small and cheap furniture?

See you guys at 2nd look!
