On behalf of Dr. Gregory Threatte at SUNY Upstate, for those who knew Dr. Henry:

John Bernard Henry, M.D., 80, of Skaneateles, NY (Town of Niles, Cayuga County) died April 10 of natural causes.

He grew up in Elmira, NY, and graduated from Elmira Catholic High School (now known as Notre Dame High School). Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Hospital Corpsman from 1946 to 1948. He attended Cornell University (A.B. 1951) and, using his G.I. Bill, graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1955. Dr. Henry completed his medical internship at Washington University Barnes Hospital in St. Louis (1956) and his graduate medical education at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in Manhattan (1958) and Harvard New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston (1960), specializing in clinical pathology.

Dr. Henry joined the medical faculty at the University of Florida in Gainesville as Director of Clinical Pathology Laboratories and Associate Professor of Pathology in 1960. He served four years before returning to Upstate New York as Professor and Director of Clinical Pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1964, where he was a member of the faculty until 1979. During his tenure at SUNY Upstate Medical University, he was responsible for establishing the College of Health Professions, including the School of Nursing.

In 1979, he was recruited as Dean of Georgetown University School of Medicine and Chairman of the Executive Faculty and served until 1985, when he returned to SUNY Upstate Medical University as President and CEO. In 1992, Dr. Henry returned to the faculty of SUNY Upstate in Clinical Pathology and served as Director of Transfusion Medicine. He subsequently retired from SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2005.
Dr. Henry served as a Lieutenant (Medical Corps) in the U.S. Navy reserves from 1957 - 1968. He re-affiliated with the Naval Reserve as a Captain (Medical Corps) in 1979 and was a member until his retirement in 1995. In 1990, Captain Henry was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for Meritorious Achievement by the Secretary of the Navy for his exceptional performance in advancing Naval Medicine in Central New York. In January 1991, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding service as Officer in Charge, Naval Reserve Medical Unit PO262A, leading his unit from an embryonic state to a highly effective, mobilization-ready organization.

In addition to his faculty, staff and Navy Reserve service, Dr. Henry found time to edit and be a contributing author to seven editions of the book, “Clinical Diagnosis and Management by Laboratory Methods,” published by W. B Saunders Co. He also found time to publish over 250 medical articles as well as serving on the boards of directors of several local community organizations. Dr. Henry served for ten years as a member of the Board of Directors of Skaneateles Savings Bank and for seven years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Skaneateles Country Club, where he also served as President for one year. He has been a member of the Skaneateles Country Club since 1965 and was a director of the Junior Sailing Program at the Club for thirteen years. Dr. Henry has spent several years as a Rotary Club member of both the Skaneateles Rotary Club and the Washington, DC, Rotary Club.

Dr. Henry had special appointments and leadership roles in multiple scientific organizations including the American Board of Pathology, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), the College of American Pathology (CAP), and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Dr. Henry received multiple honors and awards including the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, the SC **** Founder Award from the Royal Society of Medicine, the John C. Rose award from Georgetown University Medical Center, the ASCP/CAP Joint Distinguished Service Award, the International Biographical Centre International Scientist of the Year, and the SUNY Board of Trustees Distinguished Service Professor.

Dr. Henry was also an avid downhill snow skier. He served on the Greek Peak Medical Ski Patrol for 30 years and taught skiing for 12 years at the Skaneateles Ski Hill Ski Club.

Dr. Henry has been a communicant of St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Skaneateles since 1964.

Dr. Henry is best known for the guidance, encouragement, and support he provided to so many individuals over the course of his life. His influence has been profound.

Dr. Henry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Georgette. He is also survived by his six children, Maureen A. Mayer (Thom), of Great Falls, VA, Julie P. Henry, M.D. (Peter Paganussi, M.D.), of Oakton, VA, William B. Henry, of Reston, VA, Paul B. Henry (Robyn Whalen), of Skaneateles, NY, John B. Henry, Jr. (Melissa), of Skaneateles, NY, and T. David Henry, S.J., of Seattle, WA, as well as twelve grandchildren (Joshua Mayer, Kevin Mayer, Gregory Mayer, Caroline Paganussi, Claire Paganussi, Matthew Paganussi, Gabrielle Henry, Adrienne Henry, Kristen Henry, Jack Henry, William Henry and Colin Henry).

A funeral Mass will be offered Wednesday at 10 AM in St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, Skaneateles. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Skaneateles. Calling hours are Tuesday 5 to 7 PM at the Robert D. Gray Funeral Home 49 Jordan St. Skaneateles. Contributions may be made to the Skaneateles Historical Society 28 Hannum St. Skaneateles, NY 13152.

Rest in Peace -Dr. Henry. I heard he was a great man although I never met him.
