BUMP.

Any news yet?

nope. not yet. I sent a file update to hopkins in Jan. and they were nice on the phone about it then. Maybe the people who answer the phone are annoyed because they are experiencing a heavy call volume these days.

Just got a letter from them. It said that I was put in the lower portion of their alternate pool, and since they know from past experience they never get that far down, have removed my name from consideration. Oh well.

Hi all... got the same letter today too. There goes my dream of attending Hopkins...

The rejection hurts and I'm definitely disappointed... Good luck to the rest of you on the list.

chisox and jerbear-- I'm sorry to hear that news. :(

In all likelihood I got the same letter. I can't check my mail right now because I am staying with a friend, but when I go home later today and if I get anything I'll let you know.

oh dear. i'm very sorry to hear that, jerbear, chisox, and retro. :( i'm sure you'll all make wonderful doctors, regardless.

incidentally, i'm out of town at the moment, and waiting ever more anxiously...

I am waiting as well...waiting and waiting and waiting. Waiting has become my new hobby...

Maybe my letter will come on monday?

no mail for me yet... maybe monday

No mail for me yet either... I guess that's good news.

just found out i got the letter too. :(

oh well. it feels good to have all the futile waiting and hoping over with, i guess.

i wish all of you that are still waiting the best of luck!

To chisox, retro, and daffodil: keep your chin up... I know it'll take me the next few days to get over this rejection and probably for you all as well but I tell you, just getting an interview, not to mention being waitlisted, at Hopkins is an accomplishment and honor (in my opinion)... it's disappointing that the eventual outcome is negative but we must have been doing something right these past years to have warranted serious consideration.

Anyway, just wanted to spread some positive energy to you all and bolster our spirits. The "Hopkins Med School consideration stage" of my medical career is officialy over and now I move on to comtemplate my other options!! Where are you all looking to attend Med School? I've got a couple of acceptances, am waiting on news from one school post-interview, and am on the waitlist at another dream school (Rochester is currently the top choice out of my acceptances).

Good luck to lyle, caliboy, irongirl, and the rest of you who have yet to hear from Hopkins (which is probably good news!!).

Peace,
JerBear

JerBear, thanks for the encouragement. Indeed it was an honor to be interviewed by JHU. I am done for this application year, I am going to attend Vanderbilt, and I am very excited about it. Although I am waitlisted at some other schools that are not my top choices, I withdrew from them so that others can move up the list. Good luck. :)

retro: i'm going to vandy too, at least if my waitlisted stuff doesn't work out. you a guy or girl? (i may be needing a roommate).

yes, thanks for the encouragement jerbear. the fantasies of being a jhu student were nice while they lasted!

i actually feel sort of relieved, though, that the whole process is over for me now. i'll be at michigan next year, and i'm very excited about that.

best of luck to all, whether the news is good or bad. perhaps our paths may cross some other time in the future!

bump--anyone get a letter today?

still no mail for me...anyone else?

Poindexter, did you interview on 1/31? There was a girl in our group from MN and I'm wondering if it's you.

Nothing so far, but maybe I need to wait another day.....

Nope, not me Caliboy. I interviewed on 1/3. Still no letter for me either.

Sounds like it was good news not to hear. I heard, and got the bottom third/being removed deal. Its all good. I would have loved to tell them no, but I guess I can't be greedy.

any news today?

Anybody have new info???

Perhaps they'll send out another round of letters today. Wednesday=mail day???

I'd call the admissions office, but today's been a good day and I don't want to ruin it.

any news yet? April is almost over!

hey folks, a *very* good/reliable source at hopkins told me that the adcom mailed out "upper" tier waitlist letters yesterday afternoon. I believe some local students already have received these letters.

Letter has a postcard you have to send back b4 5/16 to remain on the list. Letter says that ".. based on the past history u have a very good chance of getting in.. but let us know if you matriculate at another school.. meanwhile we'll try our absolute best to notify you asap.. please call us ANYTIME w/ any questions (YEAH RIGHT!!!)"

good luck fellas

Has anyone recieved a waitlist letter placing them anywhere other than the bottom third of the list? Are these the only letters that have been sent out so far?

I received the upper tier letter in the mail today, and it reads about how chef said it would. I wonder when they will start pulling people from the wait list?

score justin! alright man! congrats!!!

looks like we wont be seeing each other next year after all (that is unless by some miracle we both get pulled from cornell)_ although i, unlike you, would pick hopkins over cornell in a hearbeat!

the only thing is that I do not know if I would choose hopkins over pitt! You probably think I am crazy, but does the Hopkins name make that much of a difference over another top 20 school, especially if I want to go into primary care?

yeah, actually, in that case i think you are right. i would go for the school i felt more comfortable at_ and i know hopkins is pretty lecture-based which could be a pain in the ass. but i DO want to go into surgery or subspecialty, so i am more interested in reputation, so i would have taken it. oh well, sweet decision to have.

see you around.

I got my letter today: I'm on the upper portion of the waitlist :)

i did too, but mine doesn't say anything about having a very good chance of acceptance, only that i'm in the upper portion. did anyone's say they had a good chance of getting in?

I just got a letter saying I'm in the "upper portion of the alternate list."

This makes my seventh waitlist. I didn't believe this was possible.

although the letter doesn't really address our chances of being accepted, a very good percentage of the "upper portion" of the list ultimately get accepted. in fact, i have two friends who were in the upper portion last year and are currently students at Hopkins.

By the way, is there a "middle portion?"

Just got the letter, I'm on the "middle portion" of the waitlist. I guess that means there's no chance, right?

LizardKing :) , with 5 waitlists myself, and a friend on 10 waitlists, I'm wondering what makes us so desirable to sideline like this. Is it because at the top med schools we happen to be applicants that are only just not good enough to get in straight, or is it that we are in the field with high caliber peeps from our own undergrads (I learned that many schools have the same adcom member review and present the applicants from any one major undergrad school). Or is there something incomplete in our records, a research or community service activity in progress perhaps, something that they want us to finish up, so they put us on the waitlist to check back later? I dunno, I'm just speculating and wondering what other people who got waitlisted at many of the same schools think.

That said, good luck you guys on the upper portion :D

Yeah, so what are the chances being in the middle of the wait-list. Do letters help?

I posted this on another thread, but...

Can someone who received an upper tier mailing please tell me what was included? Thanks a lot.

Incendiary: it included the letter, plus a contact info form to be returned to the admissions office, and a stamped envelope

This is gonna make someone here happy... I just sent in my withdrawl of acceptance from Hopkins, which should make room for someone else. I'll be heading to UCSF instead.

Good luck!

Does anyone know if people on the upper portion are individually ranked or if the list is completely arbitrary? Any idea of how many people are in each third of the wait list?

the hopkins waitlist isn't divided into thirds, but HALVES. There is a top half and a bottom half. Originally there were 400 people in the total list, but it was chopped in half (the lower portion removed) just recently when people got letters a week ago. So about 200 people remain, and from years past, about 50 get off the waitlist (give or take 10)

hope this helps.

wait a minute...so the lower portion's been taken out already and now the upper and middle portion remain, right? So there's a total of 200 people in the upper AND middle portion combined or just 200 in the upper portion?

thanks for your help!

yes..please clarify: 200 on the upper portion? or 200 on upper + middle portions?

FYI: Dean White said that no movement will occur until at least May 15.

Post if/when you hear...

Have any of you seen a movie called "Getting In?" It's early nineties and about a dude on the Hopkins waitlist...He's number six and decides to bribe the people above him so to drop off the list...the number five guy however starts killing everyone above him...it's really funny and even funnier knowing that Hopkins takes like 50 off the waitlist...I'm not on it because I don't apply for another two yrs but I saw the movie this weekend and thought it was appropriate.

Sparky..that is so funny. I have to go and rent that movie now.

Well everyone, its 5/15 week!! GOOD LUCK TO US ALL. Although I doubt they will start accepting people off the list right away, it *is* possible! I think that at least some people on this forum should hear something in the next couple weeks. :)

AND THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS! 3, 2, 1!!!!
Make sure you guys post here as soon as you hear from Hopkins so that the rest of us can congratulate you and get our hopes WAY up! :p :D

Hey peeps... I was one of the people who got a lower tier letter a few weeks ago... just wanted to wish you luck as 5/15 rolls around; you should all be proud that you've made it this far!

awww..this thread was all the way on the 4th page!! Here's to BUMPING it up.

Thanks for the well wishes JerBear-- when it comes to you, I think JHU is really missing out.
