Has anyone joined Alpha Omega Alpha or knows of someone who has joined as a resident? I am interested in the particulars of the process. Does this only happen at a university program, or can it occur at a university affiliated program as well? I am very interested in pursuing this, if anyone can help let me know.

My understanding is that the medical students inducted into AOA choose the residents -- at least that was how it was at my school.

This year we inducted a resident and a fellow at my school. Essentially, the election process involved a faculty member writing a letter for nomination, and then the person nominated was discussed at a meeting which consisted of residents, med students, and faculty that were already part of AOA. Then there was a vote to elect, with all votes carrying equal weight.

Is this the norm process everywhere? And does this happen often?

Depending on how active the chapter is, it may/should happen every year. Both my med school and my residency program have elected residents in the past 2 years. It's sort of like getting a honorary degree.

Just curious, why are you "very interested" in pursuing this?

Aside from the honor itself, does AOA status really matter for anything besides helping one attain a desirable residency?

I guess you can always put in on ur CV if applying for a job or an academic position. It may come into play.

It's just another old boys club to be in. The more clubs you're in the easier things become. I find that people, especially in this business, like to be around others who have come down a similar road to the one that htey came down.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

Can someone who went to a foreign med school be considered as a resident?

I think it's a huge honor. Think about how many residents there are at a typical large academic program. -- hundreds? To be picked by the AOA residents as a great resident is big compliment.
