Hi!! So I'm currently a Freshman//Sophomore and planning on applying to vet school during my junior year.

and well i was just wondering if there's been any successful junior applicants that have been accepted before.

and also...what if you didn't get accepted as a Junior, but DID get accepted as a Senior...did you like...re-write your PS or just reuse it??

Hello! The only time I've heard of someone applying as a junior and being accepted was one of the vets I shadowed. She went to a school where there was an accelerated animal science program, finished her degree in 3 years, and then went right into the vet school at the same university.

That said, I don't think it's a very common thing, though it does happen occasionally. I think it's wonderful that you absolutely know what you're going to do with your life and I understand the want to get there as quickly as you can. However... to me, college is an important part of the growing up process. I think it's your last easy opportunity to explore any other interests you might have, learn things that aren't necessarily veterinary related, and grow as an individual before you get to vet med. Vet school will be all consuming, and I'm very glad that I spent a lot of my time in college doing things that weren't playing with dogs every day or reading an anatomy textbook (though I adore dogs and am actually looking forward to anatomy [don't burst my bubble]).

But that's just me... I wanted to be a vet when I was 6 years old, and in college I had a few mini-crises where I changed my major several times and tried any and every other field I had even the remotest interest in. Ultimately, I believe you end up where you belong 🙂 Best of luck!

Edit: oh, and the other part of your question - I think any time you reapply to vet school, you should rewrite your personal statement to reflect how you've grown and changed and what makes you a better applicant this time around.

There's a gal that I take classes with and she's a junior and got in. Our university has a reciprocity program with UW-Madison, so she'll get her bachelor's degree next year after her first year of veterinary school. She just finished her vet med pre-reqs before she finished the necessary classes for her degree.

I don't know all of her statistics, but she's an amazing student, so it does happen!

I know a student who was accepted into vet school (Michigan) after her junior year...she was able to use her first year of vet school courses to satisfy the rest of her BS degree and she 'graduated' from undergrad at the same time (she just had already completed her first year of vet school). The reason I don't think it's super common is because most people don't have their prereqs finished by their junior year (most vet schools require that you don't have more than 2 prereqs left to take in the spring term). It is definitely possible. Good luck when you apply. And I agree, I wouldn't reuse a personal statement between applications because that is acting like you are no more qualified the second (or in some cases third, or forth...) time that you apply than you were the time before.

One of my college roommates got accepted her junior year. She had straight As, took the GREs as a sophomore and scored a 2250 (when it was still out of 2400 with the three sections).

Several of my vet school classmates were juniors when they applied and (obviously) got accepted.

It can and does happen--but usually for extremely exceptional candidates. 🙂 Good luck! :luck:

I have heard of this happening too, but it isn't very common. I think in order to have a reasonable shot you would need a stellar GPA and experience. But if you have your requirements done I would say go for it! It would be a good experience and you might get in!

I know several people, myself included, who were accepted after completing sophomore year.

Get the pre-reqs out of the way and you're golden.

Its more common than you think, theres several in our class who got accepted after their junior year, and even one who got in after their sohpomore year (that included taking some college classes while in high school though).

I'm a junior and was accepted this year. I have also heard of some other people who this has happened to so it's not impossible. You just have to have a competitive application and make sure that your pre-reqs will be completed by the end of that year.

I also know several students that were accepted as juniors. I wanted to graduate/get my degree, but almost wish I had applied earlier just for the experience.

Especially, if you are able to obtain your bachelors after your first year of vet school as some people above have mentioned- I would definitely go for it!

I'm a junior as well, and I was just accepted. I figured I would apply early to get the experience of applying since I'd already completed my prereqs and taken the GRE. Just be sure that you are ready to go if you are accepted and if the school does not offer the "complete one year of vet school, get a bachelors" program. You can go to vet school without a bachelor, but most people advise against it because you never know what's going to happen on down the line.

A girl at my school hadn't planned on applying as a Junior, and a couple months before the application was due, she decided to apply and see how it went. She got into UGA and is going in the Fall. I think that's only possible at UGA for in-state applicants, but I'm sure it's not the only state.

I'm also a junior and I was accepted. I think as long as all of your ducks are in a row it's not that big of a deal.

wow thanks! y'all really helped me...it really IS possible! lol. i guess all i have to do is do REALLLYYYY good in my pre-reqs! haha..funnnn. but seriously...thankyou :]

In my class at U of I (c/o 2012) there are 3 people (myself included) that were accepted during their junior year of undergrad. It's definitely possible - I wasn't outstanding academically (3.4 GPA I think) but what got me in were my thousands of experience hours. U of I has made an effort to look more at the whole applicant than just GPA. As long as you stay focused on your goal, you can do it. 🙂

ok actually i just realized...i'm kinda in a not-so-good position now am i?

i'm a newb to this whole vet med animal science shizzznitts and have like 1 hour of animal experience [through retirement horse volunteer grooming lol] and haven't had any luck with getting a job at a Animal Hospital of anysort. i have a part-time job as a hostess at a restaurant but am about to start summer classes, so i'll barely have time to do anything extra.

hmm...would i still have time to make up for that lack of experience for the remainder of my time ya think??

like i'm also planning && saving money to go study abroad in South Africa hopefully in summer or 2010, but then i guess i need to volunteer more && try to get a job at a Vet place.....

oh man...i'm screwed lol

About 8 or so of my classmates and I were accepted our junior year. I wouldn't say that it is uncommon at all.

I was accepted this year after only 3 year of undergraduate work. As has already been mentioned, I am a few credits shy of finishing my degree, and some credits from the first year of Vet School will transfer back to finish my degree. I think this will only work because the Vet School I am going to is where I went for undergrad as well.

One of my friends applied to our in-state vet school just for practice, and he got in.

I'm applying this year. I'll have junior standing in the fall, although it's my second year. If I don't get in I'll just pay another year of out-of-state tuition (ew!) and graduate.
