Hey guys! I am a minority student currently enrolled with a 2.73 gpa 🙁. Its my last year so I will definately be boosting it up. I took my Dat and I didnt do so well. I ended up getting a AA of 16🙁. Im just wondering would it be a waste of time submitting my application this year? Should I just wait until next year when my gpa is much better and DAT score is higher. Since I have all of my prerequisite courses finished I was still going to apply and hope someone looks at my application. Despite my gpa and dat score, I am involved with numerous organizations and have an incredible amount of community service hours as well as dental shadowing hours. Nevertheless, I work a lot of hours just to pay for school. If I do have a chance to get in a school this year, what are some schools that I may consider applying to? Also do you guys know of anyone who got into dental school with a similar gpa and dat scores like mine?

I am afraid that even as a minority students, your chances maybe slim because dental school admissions have gotten more and more competitive over the years, even for minority students.

First of all, you are applying pretty late as of now. Even if you submit right at this second schools probably wont be able to receive your application until late October/early November if everything goes well.

A lot of schools also have cutoffs for GPA and DAT, and I am afraid that you might not be able to make some of them. This even applies to the minoirty orientated schools. From my understanding, Meharry requires a 17 on DAT this year (not sure if just TS or AA) to just make the first cut...

I would advise you to call Howard and Meharry and talk to them about your situations first.

Good luck! 👍

Thanks man. I guess I will still just apply and see how everything turns out. I know gpa and dat are really important. But do they look for other things also. Although I dont have the best gpa, I am involved within my community and hold positions in several organizations. If I didnt work as much to pay for school, I am sure my gpa would be much higher. So do you think they look for well rounded individuals or just accept bookworms lol.

Even if you only apply to the 2 "minority" schools and your state school (if applicable)... you should expect to pay around 500$ in fees.

Consider that it is a little late in the cycle, and that your stats ARE on the lower end of the spectrum... If you had one of the two... GPA or DAT, then you would have a better chance, but you dont have either.

By the time your aadsas GPA is verified, and sent to the schools, it will be around november, and then by the time they receive their additional fees, it will be closer to december.

consider the fact that you can only be accepted if you are interviewed, and that schools send out their first decisions for acceptance on December 1st.

If they do decide to let you have an interview... It will definitely be past december.... My guess is around february. At that point, you are probably competing against more qualified candidates (who applied late) for much fewer seats than an early applicant.

I am not trying to discourage you, but I am trying to show you the big picture. If 500 dollars is nothing to you, then you should definitely apply no matter what.

apply next year or year after those stats have to come up.

yea i would agree with everyone else here
If money is really not a factor for you, then go for it. I'm sure no one is going to stop you. But you have to understand that there are plenty pre-dents that do work a significant number of hours to pay for school as well and still have decent gpas...

Please try to think of this as an encouraging reply: don't worry about this year. Focus on pulling all As in your courses and your job (gotta pay the bills, I know!). You might even cut back on some of the extracurricular stuff you're involved in; sounds like you've got that covered. Get your As, save some money to retake the DAT next Spring, and you should have a fair chance. I'll be entering dental school (hopefully) at the age of 30, as will many others. If you rush yourself, you might just get stressed out, and that's no fun.

Good luck!
