Are those scholarships like the $5,000/year with CVS?

Do some MWU students get the Federal Perkins Loan? I didn't see it listed on my award letter. I am going to take the 31k loan  because I don't have any other choice. I don't have any scholarships or grants.

Off-topic question: MWU has a campus gym, right? Do the students have to pay any fees or anything like that to use the gym? What kind of exercising equipment stuff does the gym have?

Also, have you taken any electives so far? If so, what are they like? Do they add more stress and time to the already required study/work load or are they not too bad?

I don't know too much about the financial aid....most students take out the full amount.

Yes MWU has a gym and no you don't pay any fees... They gym isn't the best but it has a weight room, ellipticals, bikes, treadmills, and some other stuff... It fits the purpose for the most part. They are actually knocking that buliding down and building a new building with a gym, but I don't know when that will be complete.

I have taken 7 hrs of electives. You need to take 16hrs of electives to graduate. I would recommend taking some early if you can. Most of them aren't very hard. They will add some busy work and projects...they aren't too stressful. It also depends on the elective you choose because they are all very different.

Hey, Karm!

Long time, no speak. I've got a couple questions for you, if you don't mind. Do you know anything about, or know anyone that is currently doing the work-study program? I've been qualified for two grand, but I don't know where to access a list of available jobs. The link on MWU online is in Excel and I don't have that on my home computer.

Secondly, are you going to that goofy ball sport thing that they have coming up in July? I've debated doing it, but I fear weird sports with long sticks and go carts.

Is it common for MWU students to get pharmacy related work over the summers? I know you're doing the accelerated program, so you are working year round, but what is everyone else doing?

Lastly, does Midwestern provide you with opportunities to keep your pharm tech license current? I know we need 20 hours of CE every two years. Is that built into the program there or do you have to pay and seek out other CE training opportunties?

Thanks for your help. Hope you are enjoying your summer.

This is the funniest thing I have read in a long time.

Do you mean Pharmacy Tech Certification? Because I've had a license for a few years and I've never done any CE?

For a list of jobs you could contact Financial Aid...I know there are all sorts of things they let you do for $$ including community service. I am sure they can send you a list.

I am not doing the whirly ball thing and I don't know anyone who is.

Most students work in pharmacies over the summer. I did a retail internship last summer and not rotations this summer. The school keeps a book in the library that lists job and internship opportunities for students.

I don't know what you mean about the tech license. I pay the $25 renewal fee every year and that is good enough. I am not a certified tech. But no the school does not provide you with opportunities for CE tech hrs as far as I know.

My award letter got posted. 23,000 for tuition?.

Did it really go up 2k this year?

I am in-state. Did other in-state people also get told that amount?

Also, do we have to do anything special to waive health insurance? I don't plan on using the school provided one. Do I just not do anything? Or do they automatically enroll you?

Thanks in advance to whoever answers my questions...probably Karm12

That is what I meant. It's funny how we learn this skill of hearing what someone means instead of hearing what they actually said. Thanks for clarifying.

I hear ya on the insurance issue. I just called them two days ago to ask what our coverage includes so that I could look for comprable (and hopefully cheaper) plans. She sounded a bit out-of-sorts that anyone would even think of looking into getting insurance outside of Midwestern. If I'm not mistaken, and based on what other people around me are saying, the price for our insurance at Midwestern is Outrageous. I'm not a good one to make this judgement call, however, as I have been livng uninsured for over a decade now. I haven't had the honor to be able to afford health insurance, even when working 3 jobs, six days a week.

Yes tuition took a hike...it does every year so get used to it. :( I am in state and the rate is a bit higher for out of state by about a thousand or two.

To waive health insurance you have to show them proof of another insurance. You can do this during the orientation "taking care of business" portion. MWU requires that you have health insurance to be a student. If you don't then they require you to purchase the insurance through the school and will add it on to the school fees. You can seek an outside insurance company, but most students get school insurance because it is less hassle. Plus you can use the MWU wellness center physician without any copay.

Does anyone plan to consolidate their student loans? Is it wise to consolidate now as a first year pharmacy student? I'm taking out $31,000 in loans (Fed. Staff. sub and unsub.). But since I don't even receive these loans until the Fall, there's probably no point in consolidating now since I don't have any student loans with MWU yet, right? For current MWU students: did you defer the interest for the unsub. Fed. Staff. loan or did you pay the interest yourself throughout school?

When I was an undergrad, I loaned for 2 years. I loaned ~$7,125. I already did exit loan counseling with my undergrad school. But I don't have to repay the loans yet since I am continuing on to pharmacy school. I plan to pay back everything after I graduate. But I am starting to think that I should take care of the $7,125 now so I can focus on all the loans after Midwestern. Or should I consolidate those undergrad loans? I think the Fed. Staff. Sub. loan is 3% (for undergrads.)? Is there anyone in the same position? I welcome any advice. Thanks!

I signed up for a room in Redwood Hall. Did you get the orientation packet and schedule for the Fall quarter?

I lived on campus my first year of school. I would recommend it because it is the best way to get to know people in your class. There are apartment complexes near campus, but rent is very pricey due to the area MWU is located.

I wish I applied to UIC after I learned Midwestern's tuition is going to be 23k this year. The difference in tuition before was at the very limit I was willing to go over to go to a school I would prefer going to. But now it is over that limit. Oh well. I hope Pharmacist salaries stay up for at least a few years after I graduate.

Maybe I can get into the accelerated program and make up the difference.

Yeah, just got it. By the way, did you notice if anywhere it listed our address and phone number for the room we signed up for?....maybe I missed it.

I didn't see our address listed either. I assumed it is the same as Midwestern's?

I'm so glad that we got our Fall schedule and that the exam dates are listed (although they are tentative). Are you planning to take electives the first year?

Yeah, I'm glad we finally got the fall schedule too. As far as electives, I wasn't planning on taking any right away. From what I've heard, it seems like we'll have much more freedom in our schedules for electives in later years.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what were the names of the electives that you already took and how were they? When we take electives, are we given a letter grade that counts towards the GPA? Also, how do the electives fit in the schedule? Don't we already have a set schedule so do we go take the electives during the times that we don't have the set classes? And these electives vary from being classroom type, research in the labs type, community service at specific locations types, right?

You guys can't take any electives because they aren't offered to you this quarter. You can only take the electives that are listed on your program's block schedule. There aren't many electives offered 1st yr. Most are taken last quarter of 2nd year and all of 3rd year.

Electives I took were
Current topics in drug lit - class was 1 credit hr and offered pass/fail
Bioterrorism - 2 credits, letter grade based on weekly quizzes, letter grade
Vet Pharm - 2 credits, letter grade based on assignments, quizzes, project, letter grade
Biotechnology - 2 credits, based on HW, quizzes, papers, letter grade

Others offered: Enteral/parenteral nutrition, med. management in schools, compounding, adv diabetes care, smoking cessation, sign language, women's health

The classes vary greatly as far as their work load is concerned and means of evaluation...you'll learn more about electives as they are offered to you. They will be set into your block schedule and pretty much all of them are on campus in lecture halls or classrooms.

Thank you so much, Karm12! For future reference, is there a limit to the number of students that can be placed into certain elective courses?

PS1 students: Anyone planning to take the Biochem and/or Physiology exam(s) during the first week of school (CCP's Advanced Standing Process)? I am thinking about taking it, but for my Physiology I undergrad class, we only covered the nervous system, endocrine system, muscular, integumentary, and skeletal systems. I didn't take Physio II as an undergrad (which had the cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, urinary, lympatic, and reproductive systems). So I don't think I will do a good job taking the Challenge exam unless I borrow a physiology book now and start studying intensely?

My major concern is that I'm scared I have to tackle all the electives with the regular courseload and that I'll be stressed out. So if I can place out of Physio I, I can try to use that extra space for electives? Or maybe it doesn't matter since electives aren't usually offered to PS1 students?

How exactly does the AGO work? Is it hard to finish all your classes and electives by graduating early?

I figured I'd give KARM12 a helping hand and jump in and answer some question. One of my good friends goes to MWU-CCP so I thought I'd give it a go. What Karm12 is implying in regards to the various questions regarding electives is that there are certain pre-designated sports within your schedule and the curriculum for electives during the years you are to take them. It isn't as if you are taking a full schedule and then some. My friend decided to do AGO, AGO stands for accelerated graduate option or something similar to that. Basically, you go to school for 3 years instead of 4. You take classes/do rotations during the summers. When my friend decided to do it, the option was only available to a limited number of students based on their grades/class standing. But, from what I understand the program has since been expanded and is available to all or nearly all. I'm sure KARM will clarify further.

With the AGO program you take all of your regular coursework as you would if you were in the regular program. The difference comes in when you do rotations. Instead of having the summer off between PS2 to PS3 year you do two rotations, adv. hospital and adv community. When Sept. rolls around, I will finish up the rest of my coursework....and then fininish up my last 4 rotations starting in March and continue through that next summer finishing up at the end of August. MWU students who do not do AGO start rotations in Spring of their PS3 year...have the summer off and finish the rest of their rotations as a PS4 year. By doing AGO you take those 4 rotations you would do during a PS4 year and put them in during the summer.

The other poster is somewhat correct, but not entirely. When I applied to the AGO program they allowed students with a certain minimal GPA to apply for the program and then ranked students according to their GPA and allowed the top so many students spots in the program (usually about 50). I am not exactly sure how they changed it but I am pretty sure they raised the minimal GPA to apply for the program and then offered students to apply. From those that applied, they did a lottery. The space in the program is still limited. They did this to eliminate the competition between students I am assuming...my class was super competitive and students with GPA's over 3.5 to 3.6 weren't in the top quarter of the class.

The challenge exams are very difficult...no one passed the Biochem one and only one or two students passed out of both semesters of Physiology. A few more passed out of just Physio 1. It is still worth a shot if they let you take it though...but just don't bank on the fact you are going to get out of the class. At max...about 5/200 students pass out per year.

Electives are built into your block schedules. For example in PS3 yr we have 3 required classes and the rest we take are electives. If you pass out of physio, you will not be able to take any electives, because all the electives are for PS3 and PS2 students. Most of them have prereq's that you haven't had yet and aren't even offered to first years. Plus, since they are built around our schedules, they will most likely conflict with yours. Do not worry about electives...they will be fit into your schedule. As I said before they are most taken Spring of PS2 year and then all of PS3 year. There will be some opportunities for electives in PS1 year in the Winter or Spring quarter. So far the electives have been pretty easy. And yes, many of the electives have limits on enrollment. You will rank your preferences for what classes you want and then a computer will put that into a lottery. It is a pretty fair system. I got elective choices 2 & 3..my first choice had a limit of 20 students for the fall. And also...most electives are only offered one time during your time at MWU...so if something looks good, try to take it because you probably wont get the chance again.

Thanks so much, Karm12. I really appreciate that you are answering all of our MWU questions.

Is there an on-campus bank that MWU uses? I want to open a bank account and want to know the banks at MWU...or a bank that MWU uses? Thanks.

No there is no on campus bank...I mean MWU consists of like 6 buildings...There are plenty of banks in the area around school along Butterfield Rd or on Odgen Ave. I would look up banks in Lombard/Downers Grove/Oakbrook/Westmont. There isn't anything specific the University uses. There is a TCF, State Farm, and West Suburban that are really close to campus. Again...nothing is within walking distance of campus so you're gonna need a car even if you are deciding to live on campus.

MWU sent another mail package out. I received it on Monday and in the letter, it says that the dress code for orientation is business casual (capris, khakis, pants, collared shirts, skirts, blouses, etc). I was planning on wearing jeans, but I think I'll wear something else now.

Seems kinda crazy just for orientation.....Now I'm curious if we have to dress up for classes.

No no no...you don't need to dress up for classes in general. There will be a few lab classes that will require professional dress...but that isn't very often. I am surprised they want you to dress up for orientation...we didn't have to when I went, but that was 2 years ago.

Hmm...I need to find that letter again. All I remember was them saying we should dress "nicely" since year book pictures are taken that day also.

I hate dressing business casual. I am a jeans/t-shirt kind of guy!

Oh God, the infamous "yearbook picture". We didn't have to dress up for our orientation and they had us participate in a timed campus wide scavenger hunt in 90 degree weather right before taking 'the picture you will be remembered by'. It came out worse than my drivers license picture.

Will I need a bunch of notebooks/folders, or will lecture notes be provided? And if that's the case maybe I should get 3-ring binders?

Will I need a bunch of notebooks/folders, or will lecture notes be provided? And if that's the case maybe I should get 3-ring binders?

I was planning on using 3-ring binders too. I heard that we get a lot of handouts and photocopied documents so I wanted to put those in 3-ring binders. I also heard that we might be provided with powerpoint slide handouts that we can take notes on. I'm going to take notes in spiral notebooks if I run out of room on the handouts.

Did you see your statement of account on online.midwestern.edu? It shows how much we will be paying for the Fall quarter. Are you going to accept all of your student loan amount or are you going to reduce the amount? I saw that the loans will cover everything and there might even be some leftover money. So what happens to that leftover money? Like if I loaned $10,000 and I only use $8,000 to pay. What happens to the un-used $2,000? Will it go back to the government or will I be expected to use the $2,000 and then pay back all the $10,000 after graduation or will I just be responsible for the $8,000 that I used? I'm so confused about financial aid :(

You use the remainder for living expenses. Unless you have no mortage/rent and have a really high paying job or a spouse/parent to give you an allowance to live off of, you need that money for things like food, rent, etc. If you dont need any other money, you can give it back to the govnt and only be responsible for the money you used.

Most of your notes are handouts...I don't think I've opened up a spiral notebook since I started that place. Binders will work well.

Do we give back the money at the end of the school year, during, or before? Because the first $10,333 (Fed Sub. and Unsub. Staff.) will be disbursed into the student account at the start of the Fall quarter, right? And if I don't use about $800.00 and won't need it, what happens to it? Should I tell the school to take it back before the quarter ends or when is the appropriate time?

You can give back the money at anytime or reduce the loans at any time...I gave back my refund check from Aug sometime in Feb (oops...). I would say take the full amount now, that way you can see home much you need...and just reduce the loans later. Make sure you reduce the unsub loan first.

I had a question about the White Coat Ceremony, what exactly is it? What happens during the event?

How do we go about getting a parking space? Is that something that's taken care of during orientation?

Also, did anyone notice if anywhere in the orientation packet we were sent does it say what group we'll be in?

Parking is free to all students. They will give you a parking sticker at orientation...remember to bring your car insurance card and vehicle registration.

You won't know what group you are in until orientation.

You get your official white coat with the MWU CCP purple and yellow patch!

It takes place with all first year students in all the programs (DO, PA, OT, etc)...it basically welcomes you into being a health care professional... it lasts about 1-2hrs. Most pharmacy schools are doing these. You listen to some speeches, they give you your coat...that is about it.

For those who have been thru it, what do we need to bring to orientation? Thanks for your input.

Hmmm...maybe a pen.... and your car insurance/registration and health insurance card for the 2nd day's "Taking care of business." They will give you a folder with a million papaers in it...You don't really need much.

On your statement of account, does it already show your financial aid deduction?

The statment of account lists the total costs for the Fall quarter (tuition, housing, meal plan, student services fee, and disability insurace). It does not show our financial aid deduction, but I looked at the Award Letter to see how much financial aid (in loans) I will receive so I can know how much is left to pay.

I know I already asked a question about our address if we're living on campus, but I was wondering if things like our mailbox number or program or residence hall need to be included as part of our mailing address to receive mail?

Also, for those that have lived on campus, how strict is security about not having residents park in the parking structure?
