I studied for 1 month 18hrs a day. I read NBDE 1st Aid, USMLE 1st AID, Decks 2007, decks 2009, USMLE Videos, Okeson TMJ, KAPLAN Review for dental anatomy only. Did about 10,000 questions. If you need advice let me know. Good luck everybody. I'll post my scores when they come in 2-3 weeks!

why dint you use kaplan for other subjects ?

The exam was not so bad. I can not talk about specific questions but its random so you may get some on yours. Dec is alot of time so you should do well just study hard and do lots of questions.

For occlusion its a lot deeper than you think. Those questions from the released exams were not as deep. So make sure you understand every detail about mandibular movements and you should be fine.

Hey maverick, check the post to toothfixer, I explained everything. Decks was not as useful as NBDE 1st aid though if you ask me.

Thanks for the input OMFS08.
looks like you have put in huge amount of hard work.
but what is EXAM Master never heard of this book is it a question bank😕 .....?
Yes Maverick I certainly put in a tremendous amount of work! But it was worth it, I was over prepared for the exam. Exam Masters is a Question bank with over 2000 questions but keep in mind that those questions are really challenging so do not be discouraged if you don't get the scores you expect. Go to https://www.exammaster2.com/cgi-bin/htmlos.cgi/14928.1.385473660119047601 to register for it.

Hi 🙂 Where you scoring the old exams you took? do you know how much should one aim for on the practice exams? your response will be greatly appreciated thanks !!

Yes the Kaplan Q Bank came with explanations, its the online program from kaplan.I was able to do so much because I waited till school was on break and I had nothing to do but study for 1 whole month! I woke up at 7am every day and studied until I passed out! It takes dedication but I'm trying to get into Oral Surgery Residency so I had to study like my life depended on it because it does! Study HARD and whatever grade you get you will be happy with it.

Hi 🙂 Where you scoring the old exams you took? do you know how much should one aim for on the practice exams? your response will be greatly appreciated thanks !!
Hi, I was scoring anywhere from 76% to 94%. But I did not take the exam until I was scoring between 85-94%. So keep taking exams until your score gets to where you want it, then take the exam only after that.

Hey again toothfixer, I did 18hrs or more per day. I would wake up by 6 or 7am and get studying immediately. I would take a little break and eat breakfast while still reading. After reading for sometime I'd take a break. Once I felt up to it I'd knock out questions for a few hrs then take another break then get back to reading for some more hrs. I usually go to sleep around 1am then do it all over again lol. Its tough but I had to do it. Good luck! I found it was easier to read once you started so before I could talk myself out of it, I would wake up early and start reading. Also I gave myself daily goals. For instance 100 pages per day and 200 questions. In the end , closer to the exam I did 2 subjects at a time. 50 pages per subject and did focused exams (i.e only occlusion). I also ended up doing 2 days per subject so I would do occlusion for 2 days, I read the pages in Kaplan, then I did about 1000 questions on that subject and before I went to sleep I powered through the decks for that section in about 2hrs. Then after 2 days I would move on to another subject for 2 days. Thats how I covered so much! That's a secret though so keep it to yourself haha.

Hi, did u refer to any specific textbooks for micro/path/physio/anat o rdid u feel first aid was enough? because the nbde first aid just seems too vague...

Hey OMFS08 ,
Thanks for all your advice and tips .I really like the idea of doing 100 pages /day and 200 questions /day as its quite achievable .
Your hard work and dedication is surely gonna pay ....and you will get great scores. Good luck 🙂
I am planning to take the test in nov/dec ....so I have 3 months ...I am following usmle videos, kaplan to clear my basics and doing decks after that but its taking too long .....Do you think I should focus more on First aid and decks ?

Hi, I did not reference any other book. USMLE 1st Aid, NBDE 1st AID and Decks. Thats more than enough in my opinion, if you know it cold in and out.

Thanks for the kind words. I actually felt the same way about the USMLE videos. I would say focus on reading first aid and decks first and COMPLETE them. Then if you have time you can go over problem areas with the videos. That's my opinion though so you have to decide which works best for you.

Thanks for ur input. BTW Did you do pharmac? i have done the mech. of action of antimicrobial's. do u feel thats enough? also i noticed that u also solved questions on exammaster2.com.
did u feel those questions are more difficult compared to the actual thing, because i felt a few of them were irrelevant to our syllabus. otherwise they have quite a few good questions.

👍

Thanks a ton for your reply🙂...Till now instead of doing decks and first aid I was running after lecture notes ...may be thats the reason I am not feeling confident by now ...right now I am able to study for just 7-8 hrs a day ....How much time as in day/weeks should I devote to 1 subject from start to complete ....coz I have spent 10 days on anatomy and still left with a few important topics !!!!

I did not do pharm at all. As far as exam masters, the questions were way harder than the real exam. The real exam was easy in comparison to the exam masters and kaplan q bank in my opinion.

10 days whoa!!!!!!!!!!! You will not remember anything by the exam. 1-2 days per subject is what I did then did tons of questions on that subject to make it stick!

I did not do pharm at all. I had no questions on drug apart from Rifampin so know that cold! As far as exam masters, the questions were way harder than the real exam. The real exam was easy in comparison to the exam masters and kaplan q bank.

Oh ok, thanks for all the input 🙂 i got my exam on the 1st so im mainly just focusing on doing questions now and trying to remember biochem, which is killing me currently 🙁 I read lippincott and i'll revise from first aid now... what topics do u feel are most important in biochem? and for upper limb anatomy only brachial plexus, muscles and arteries are important right?

Ya with lecture notes and videos Anatomy seems like a never ending subject I was just stuck it ...... but as you said if I will focus more on decks and first aid that is surely gonna help .Thanks alot for your guidance I appreciate it 🙂

For Biochemistry just memorize the important enzymes in each cycle and know urea cycle cold in and out. For anatomy I only got one brachial plexus question and one question on Axilla (know the borders of the axilla).

Wow!! so almost 95% of gross is from head, neck and thorax?

Hi guys,I'm going to take the exam on Oct 9th.I start solving Asda papers one more time .According to scale I got 90 in each section but my average correct answers in each section is 80/100.I was told that the real exam is harder than asda papers.I was wondering if you guys can help me estimate my score in real exam

Hi Guys...

I am taking the exam October 28th 2011

I have first Aid and Dental decks 2009..and have been though them nearly twice soo far. Do u recommend i buy Decks 2011 or 2012 (if they are out) and go through them or is this suffecient?

Studies anatomy from Grant's Anatomy.. it is one the the best books out there and is in the list of recommended readings.. also has really good illustrations.

Please give me recommendations/tips!

Yeah, I was curious to hear how a month of 18 hours a day would turn out. I took my test over a week after his and got my score today.
