hey guys, do u think the kaplan course is really neccesary? I've heard many ppl say that you can do just as good by reviewing their book and practicing yourself..any thoughts? and what about online kaplan vs actual class course...does it really make a difference?

Kappy is useless. The only useful thing is the review notes, which you can probably find online or buy off of someone on these forums. Additionally, the MOST useful study tool is DAT destroyer(www.orgoman.com) The best 150 you will ever spend,no joke. I took Kappy, got Destroyer 2 weeks before the test. Good luck.

^^ yup, i agree. The Kaplan class was pretty much useless. He taught straight out of the lesson book, and all the clueless people just asked (i know theres no such thing as a stupid question) really "simple?" questions. And the stuff I was iffy on, I learned it in the review notes; which are really good.

+1 for DAT destroyer! Order it on Tuesday, at my doorstep on Thursday. Can't beat that. Hopefully everything will stay in my head, at least until Friday!! 😎

ok dude, it has its merits. case in point...my kaplan teacher? GORGEOUS...totally made going to the class worth it.

dunno if having her as a teacher was exactly worth $1200, but it was nice nonetheless 😉

i thikn the class gives u structure and direction on how and what to study. the abundance of online subject tests are great, the lectures are not that special, and the review notes are good. overall, i'd say it is helpful, BUT nothing you couldnt do on your own. $1200 is a lot of money. its worth it to some, its not to others. i'd say the class has helped me. i just try not to think about how much i paid for it. haha. also, my teacher wasn't too bad herself.

KAPLAN class is useless and destructive to you in many ways.
1. It is a complete waste of money
2. IT is a complete waste of time spent in a useless class that teaches you nothing. Not to mention the time you lost traveling to and from the class. Precious time that you can use to study.

I never took the class, I've only sat-in a couple to see if I should take the class and that was my conclusion. It's a complete waste because there are other students there so the information they teaches you is very general it doesn't cater to your specific needs.

I think the best way to prepare for the DAT is to first figure out how much time you will realistically need to be really prepared.

And also this is extremely important, give yourself a treat for doing good. For an example, I promised myself a back-packing through europe trip if I get scores of 21 and above on my science average and it really pushes me to study when I really just wanted to burn all my books and forget about dental school. I also promised myself a Louis Vuitton bag if I get any score that fits into the "100 percentile" and that also pushes me to study some more when I thought I just couldn't anymore. The point is. Give yourself rewards for motivation because sometimes the motivation of getting into dental school disappears when studying becomes overwhelming.

Make a study schedule and stick to it like glue.
I myself set aside 1 and a half month of complete concentration. Meaning beside going to work, I did nothing else but study. ( no clubs, bars, travels, fine-dining, shopping... all the fun stuff during the last two week stretch)

Review all your basic sciences. Use all the resources available to you.
I studied from MCAT books, my science books, my notebooks, my DAT review books. I made flashcards for all ORganic reactions.

After about two weeks of review I did my first practice test, and then really go back and review my weak subjects. then I take another practice test at the end of my third week and then I review my weak subjects again, then I take another practice test half-way into my fourth week... and have practice test every two days in my fifth week. I have my final practice test on the third day before my test and study some more. on the day before the test I went out with my friends the whole day and then went to bed at 10 only to lie awake the whole night stressing about the test and fell asleep for about one hour then wake up and took the test.

Beside reading materials, I bought Topscore for the practice test. In general I thought the topscore test was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy harder than the real test in terms of the sciences. In fact, I finished all my science sections early with 15-20 minutes to go over my answers on the real test.

I got scores of about 16 on all my science topscore practice tests which does not correlate with my actual scores at all. THe reading and math don't correlate either cause I did well on my topscore practice math and did bad on the real thing.

Anyhow, consider buying TOPSCORE, and DAT destroyer.. I've never heard of DAT Destroyer until last week when I stumbled onto this site. I wish I'd known about it when I was preparing for my DAT, it would probably helped my math score.

Anyhow, goodluck! and most important of all BE CONFIDENT!

I took the class and would say that the online portions of the course were extremely helpful...

If I had to do it over again, I would only do the online class and use all the online practice tests and materials as diagnostic tools and focus on what u need to study.

i agree with the online portion. the supplemental materials are pretty darn good though. the whole course does give you a solid foundation if you're a bit rusty on the general sciences, as i was. kaplan alone i don't feel will prepare you though. i am using destroyer right now after the kaplan course ended in august. and topscore for QR, RC, and PAT exercises to keep my brain working dat-style. topscore is also good because it has an integrated timer, so you can see how much time you have per question, whether or not to guess, etc...

the class was a complete waste of time.. my teacher wasn't even a dental/predent student.. he knew nothing of the DAT, only the MCAT.. the online stuff was really worth while for me... lots of practice tests, and section review tests which I learned a ton from... but as far as the class, waste of money and waste of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT TAKE THE KAPLAN CLASSROOM COURSE!!!!! If anything, do the online business. At the least, buy yourself the kaplan book. I just took the test today, and i can honestlysay that the being in the class does nothing for you. you can read and memorize that book and get your hands on some supplemental business.im' gonna retake in 3 months and order destroyer next week. i had the kaplan book memorized and apparently that wasn't enough. just another wrong turn i took on my way to dentistry.

I took the online version of the course and found it very helpful. The class was expensive so that sucks, but the class really gave structure to my studying and helped me to focus on the areas where I needed the most help. The online class is a little less expensive I think and you can do it on your own time so you don't have to worry about being at a class at a certain time which can be annoying especially if the location is not close. My advice is to ignore the cost if you think it will help you score well. Is spending a thousand bucks worth improving your possibility of getting into your top school? For me it was as I felt the class helped me. However, I was a few years out of undergrad when I took the test so I really needed that extra structure. If you already know your sciences well, study your text books and get a cheap DAT book like Barron's DAT guide and take some sample tests with Top Score Pro. Good luck.

Edit/Addendum: It is NOT "useless" as so many other posters say. If you have trouble studying, or would benefit from a structured program, then Kaplan could be good for you.

I have no issue studying, and find the course overpriced. I was also thoroughly unimpressed with both the quality of students in there as well as the instructor. The material was decent, but save your money, and purchase the used material off ebay.

Overall, it does not hurt, but certainly is not worth the money charged, nor is it "necessary." I did not need it, but it did help. Just not $1100 worth.

After hearing all these comments, I'm wondering if anyone's actually thought about this one crucial point. **Maybe Kaplan is better targetted towards some candidates than others.** It's there as a resource for students who feel like they need the extra help, perhaps those students who didn't do so well in the college pre-req's or students that have been out of school for some time. For these students, that extra help could be the identifying factor in pushing them into a professional school.

If you're not one of these students, then good for you. Kaplan's not meant for you. In addition, people here like to make gross generalizations based on one or two examples. (IE, I didn't get anything out of it, therefore noone will get anything out of it. / My one instructor was less than ideal, therefore every instructor must be inadequate!...etc!!!) These comments are silly.

For a student that doesn't yet have a solid foundation in the sciences, how much do you think he'll get from DAT destroyer or whatever if he doesn't yet have those foundations? None of the explanations'll make sense!!! For these students, developing those foundations first (thru Kaplan or any other means) is the first step.

I for one thought kaplan was helpful and worth the money, and i'm pretty sure i came in knowing my stuff.

I took Kaplan and thought that it was helpful for those who want structure to their studying and who are initially clueless about what to study. I felt that Kaplan "forces" its schedule on you so you don't get lazy and fall behind. The tons of practice exams and subject tests were also definitely helpful and covers most aspects of the DATs. The one thing that I thought kaplan was helpful on is that it's course covers the DATs well (book, classroom, practice problems, simulated test, etc) and does not focus only on giving you three tests (like topscore or DAT achiever)

I scored above 99.5th percentile (AA 23+) for the DATs with Kappie.

My recommendation: Do whatever you think would help you and make sure to study, as the DATs are a very important part of the application.

DDSY,

Do you have your practice exams still?

RDR

Sorry I no longer have access to the problem sets and practice exams. However, I also used Topscore and DAT achiever. DAT achiever is pretty good. You can buy Topscore from Amazon.com and DAT achiever from 3tquest.com

Student Dentist, It may be late, but I have to applaud you on your response. It is quite refreshing to see that there is someone that does not look at things one sided. I commend you. Thanks.
