What is the opinion of the board on Kaplan online program? Cost is high at $1249.00, but hey if it helps me on the test........

The effectiveness of the online program will be determined on your own learning skills and discipline. If you were effective in the past on learning on your own through reading passages and you're disciplined, then the online program will be effective. If you mostly learn by listening and asking questions, then the online program may not be your best option.

R.J what a great answer, I'm asking this question for my daughter, trying to decide where best to spend my money. The best bang for the buck sorta speaking. What ever I need to spend for her to do well on the test.

I did the kaplan tutor, which gave me access to the online course. I found the online materials to be amazing, but their effectiveness depends on how hard you work. If you do every excercise, watch every video, and take every test, you'll definately improve. If you don't, you can get your money back as long as you completed all the assignments. I spent 2500 dollars on my tutor program, but to me it was worth every penny, since a high DAT is the one thing you can really work at to get into dental school.

personally, I'd do the tutor again if I needed to, since it gives you access to the classroom sessions for free as well as the online materials. but if you aren't near a center, the online materials can still do the trick if you work through them and follow the syllabus.

thats my two cents,

Will, have you already taken the Dat? if you did can you post scores, I'm willing to get a private tutor session if that will help her do well.

Ron, here is the case with my daughter, she is a student athlete right now, but she is going to quit softball because it is interfering with her grades. gpa right now is 3.4 which is unbelievable with her athletic schedule, but she knows if she wants to get in dental school it will have to be better. How do you feel about class verse tutor?

If you want to hear more about my experience you can check out my other thread "new member and a kaplan endorsement", but I can repost my scores here too: bio 23, Gchem 22, Ochem 21, TS 22, RC 25, QR 17, PAT 24. I had taken it the previous year studying on my own and got almost straight 19's, except for a 21 in RC, a 20 in bio, and an 18 in Gchem. For me the benefit of the tutor was in the sciences, especially chemistry, which was my worst subject the previous year. The really nice thing about the tutor though is that if you pay for private tutoring you can enroll in the class for no extra charge, and you also get all the online materials for free. I only did the 15 hours and was thoroughly satisfied, I can't put any price on the results I got out of the program.

I hope some of that helps you make your decision,

d45,
In response to your question if you should enroll your daughter in the live course or pay for tutoring, based on will9631's response, I would pay for tutoring since the live class will be included in the price if you can afford the $2400 for the 15 hours of tutoring.

Your other option would be to pay $1400 for the live class, and see how your daughter does. The live class takes 6 weeks to complete. If she takes the course while taking a full-load of courses, she will be extremely busy. At the end of Kaplan course, she will have taken several full-practice tests which will determine if she is ready or not. If not, then the tutoring will cost an additional $2400. Therefore, you have to decide how much you are willing to pay upfront.

Keep in mind that will9631's numbers are extremely high. His numbers basically indicate that his DAT scores are in the top 5% of the nation. He will get accepted somewhere.

Ron, she will not take the dat until summer I know it's a little late, but she feels that it's better to do well on the first try than retake. She attends a tough school academic wise so trying to study for the dat and class at same time will be hard, she has been in softball until now so she has some making up to do on her grades at 3.3 gpa. I think I will pony up for the tutor.

Taking the DAT course in the summer is actually a very good plan. Your daughter could formally apply to AADSAS (online dental school application system) in late May, and then take the DAT in late July or early August. She would then update her application with her DAT scores. Submitting her AADSAS application gets the clock moving early in the application cycle and her late summer DAT test will not stall her application progress.

In addition, in order to score 21 or higher (top 10%), she will need to dedicate 6 solid weeks to the test. The Kaplan live class consists of a three hour lecture, twice a week for six weeks. In addition, she will need to spend numerous hours outside of class working on practice problems, practice tests, reading the online materials, and reviewing her textbooks.

Taking the DAT course in the summer without the distraction of other course work will greatly increase her chances of scoring high on the DAT.

Best wishes to her success. I wish I had parents that were as supportive as you are.

Hey D45,

I also took the Kaplan course, but I did so in a classroom settings like others have mentioned. I thought I did well: I got AA of 24 and PAT of 25.

The thing about the classroom is that you have to actively participate and ask questions. If you dont, imo you are not using the class to its full potential.

Keep in mind that the higher score gurantee for Kaplan states that as long as you completed all the required assignment, you can opt to retake the class for free or get your money back if you are not satisfied with your score. So, let's say you got an AA of 20, but your ideal score is 23. Technically they will still let you take the class for free or refund you money as long as you finished all you homework. Also, even if you have not completed all the required assignment, I believe you can still opt to take the class again at a much lower prize. I believe its something like 400 dollars.
