Kaplan's online course or classroom course

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It really depends. Some teachers put the time in and are well prepared, while others are not.

Here are two commonly overlooked bonuses to the actual class (even if your teacher is terrible), however, that you might want to consider:

1) In the class, you will have a bit more structure than the online course. In other words, you will have a scheduled class time every week (or twice a week). Before each class, there is preview reading you are expected to complete. After each class, there are subject tests you are encouraged to take. Having a teacher there asking you if you did your subject tests or if you did your preview reading might encourage you to actually do it. It definitely pushed me to study more.

2) You will have peers in your class going through the same thing you are. You can form study groups, discuss the DAT, etc. Before I took the actual DAT, I was able to speak to several students from my class who had just barely taken it, which helped quite a bit in knowing exactly what to expect.

In my opinion, these two things were well worth the extra $200. I also had a good teacher, which made it all the better.

I took the classroom based class from Kaplan. As the previous poster said, there are benefits to taking it. However, my instructor wasn't that good so I stopped going to the class and instead studied on my own. If I had to do it over again I would take the class online.

I also had some questions but it was never anything more than something I could look up in my science text books -- or here!

If you are diciplined and are able to stay on a steady study schedule, then the online class should be fine. If not, consider taking the class

Best of luck

I took the online course and found it to be quite beneficial. I had access to all the same materials as the in-person course. I was told that I could contact an instructor if I had unanswered questions. I did not need to but at least I could have.

I was able to focus on the areas that I was deficient in and skip the stuff I was proficient at. I feel it was worthwhile to me if nothing else for all the practice tests lectures.

my $0.02...

Hey All,
I have a question and I am desprate...I don't know which is better, should I take Kaplan's DAT online course or classroom course. I already payed for the online course and ordered the material but I have frozen the actual online material untill May since I'll be busy with school work this semester. I can concentrate better when I am alone, and spending time in class doesn't help me much, the real studying for me starts at home... however, while I am studying this winter break I had lots of questions and of course if you are taking the online course you do not have acess to the Kaplan instructors for questions...I am rethinking my decision...for those of you who took the classroom course are the teachers really that helpful and for those of you who took the online course did you find it helpfu... should I pay the difference and take the classroom course instead, or should I stay with the online course...Oh and I don't care about the $200 difference...Pleeeeeeease advice thanks alot and so sorry I talked alot 🙁

I also took the online course and it raised my score from an 18 to a 22, so it helped a lot. The only thing to think about for the online course is, will you do it? since it is not a set time per week, you really have to work hard to make sure you do the work. it is easy to blow it off and get behind on your schedule, if you can stick to a schedule then the online course is as good as the classroom in my opinion.

i think that the online thing is the same what the illegal stuff that you have.

Study DAT in your own with the kaplan online or whatever. Those kaplan classes doesnt really help. it is just an outline. covering bio in 4hours, give me a break.

I'm taking the classroom course right now so far two sessions have passed. My teacher is amazing. He is a student that just applied and is waiting to hear from the schools he applied to so far two have accepted him. He is really enthusiastic i dunno how into it other teachers are but this guy is really into it. He tells us how and when to do what, what you should write in the booklet your going to get before starting test. When to get a new scrap paper and etc lots of those little things that you wouldn't have though of. those are just one of many things that i think you can't really figure out on your own unless youve taken the class or haev a lot of people that have taken the DAT and can give u that kind of advice also the tricks involved in some of the PAT questions he has made some of his own which help so all in all classroom is definitely a plus in my opinion. gluck

not a good idea, eddie. granted, the bulk of the materials will be in the books, but that still leaves out another chunk of materials which are probably the most helpful--the online practice problems and tests (and i doubt your friend has printed them out). even when you re enrolled in the class you still have complete access to all the on-line materials. the on-line materials are most helpful as they have numerous problems (ie, PAT on the computer!) as well as full length tests. And for some of the full-length tests, there are also full-length, in-depth explanations to the test (which is very help IMO, you can see why you missed something). the main issue of studying for the DATs is to get as much study material as possible--and if you only have access to the books, you're missing out on a chunk of the study materials. once you've reached the 18 mark it's not really the more studying which helps, but rather the more problems you do, the better.

Thanks for the input. I will prob follow your advice and do the online class. I recently found out that the nearest classroom is 4.5 hours away so thats out of question.

Good stuff !
