KCOM class of 2005 meeting room

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, if you are looking for a place to move in to for your second year, my condo on Sundown will be open Oct 1. We are moving to another place then, so ours will be available. It is 3 br, 1.5 bath, 1 car garage with free snow removal and lawn care. Email me if you have any questions about it!

I just finished my preceptorship yesterday. Someone asked how much we actually did. I had a great experience on mine. It didn't really work out with my doctor. He spends a few hours each day in meetings. I ended up working in the ER and was in OR three times, and was in an Urgent care clinic.
In OR I got pimped (did OK on the nerves, couldn't remember how blood gets from the heart to the appendix). In the ER I was able to see my own patients, do the H&P, and order tests that I thought was appropriate. I would then review the case with the doctor and see if there was anything else that needed to be done.
In the Urgent Care clinic, I was also able to see my own patients, do the H&P, tests, and there I would do the paperwork and sign the chart (and then get it counter-signed).
The best part, I was also able to do suturing three times. I did one kids arm below the elbow and put in 4 stiches. I did another kids foot and put in 7 stiches, and I did a kids chin up to his lip and put in 6 really small stiches.
That was my experience.

Double elle, what do you think of Quincy? I love it! I heard Jen Krusmark is doing a month rotation there next week. I am considering it myself and maybe even residency!

ANd for the rest of the class, remember that we are in Mc Creight now!!

Mes -
I enjoyed my time in Quincy, but I wasn't in the resident's clinic like you probably were. I specifically requested to be with a doc that does alot of OB, so I was across the street with Dr. Friye. She is FP, but does about 90% OB. I did attend noon conferences and partook in the generous luncheons, though! I was at the resident's clinic on Thursdays, because my doc had off, but that was the only day I spent there...with Dr. Arnold.

I was very impressed with their starting salary for 1st year residents. The doc I worked with had gone thru the program after graduating from KCOM and had lots of good things to say about it.

As far as Quincy, itself, goes...I am from Hannibal (20 minutes from quincy), so I spent alot of time there...especially after I could drive! I've always liked it.

I think that program has a lot to offer. The residents, I thought, seemed overall happy with it. It's a definite possibility!

Good gawd what happened??? We've been bumped to page 3!

Hey guys, Im a pre-med applying to KCOM for next fall. I was up in K'ville two weeks ago to visit the school and last weekend for the jimmy eat world concert at Truman. I am trying with all my will to get in. I have a 3.8 GPA and good EC I just started last night as an ER med tech in st. louis. I saw a plastic surgery, railroad tye to the face and a (lafaux) no idea on the spelling, the tube you put down someone's throat that tried to OD. I get my MCAT scores back on thursday, crossing my fingers. I loved my visit to KCOM and the admissions counselor I met with was great. Well anyways I just wanted to tell you guys how much I love your school and give you a big old BUMP

Hey all

I just got home from a long day in the ER, Im a tech. WE had a code blue, attempted suicide by slitting his throat, and I saw two sutures. Then I get home and my fiancee has this really stupid, but happy face on. She checked my mcat scores and I got a 28N, it was my first time and my last. I really, really, really, really hope I will be attending your wonderful school next year.

Good job! It sounds like you have the experience, and the scores to get into KCOM. 🙂
I know I am not a student, but I have heard the scores of many of the current first years, and yours are definitely what will get you in (assuming everything else is good). Though, KCOM really does look for a well-rounded person....not just scores.
Just wanted to give you a word of encouragement about how well you did. 🙂

Good luck! Oh, and if your fiance has any questions about what its like have a med student as a significant other, tell her she can drop me a line anytime. 🙂

With smiles,
Wifty

Any thoughts on the "take the higher ground... as physicians we must carry on..." speech we seem to get in tragic situations?

Agreeably we will be expected to "carry on" but I'm still not sure that makes me a fan of the speech... 😕

I understand the speech. However, as a former educator, I also understand that postponing things only makes more work for everyone in the long run. Granted, this is not an excuse not to show respect (and I honestly do NOT think having class shows any disrespect), but the higher-ups have to think practically about the matter when it comes to 300 students and a tight schedule.

I also think that any 'holiday', or whatever you want to call it - like MLK Jr. Day, Columbus Day, President's day, Veteran's Day is great....but the majority of people who have that day off don't really reflect on why it exists at all. For example, if we had gotten some time - even an hour or two - off for the 9-11 stuff, I probably would have studied. I know that sounds bad, but with all that's going on in our lives...it's hard to sit back and think "now, let me reflect on why I have this time off." Most people just don't think that way under MOST circumstances. God bless those who do.

The sad thing is that most of the time the people who are asking about classes resuming (or WHATEVER the issue is) are the people that wouldn't have used that time for its intended purpose anyway....However, now those people have something ELSE to complain about!!! (Which is kind of good, because our class hasn't had a good debate in a while!)

I think the school did the right thing, it just embarasses me that we need a lecture on why it's the right thing. Also, I think that faculty member wouldn't have wanted us to cause a big disruption in the schedule.

Now, get off the computer and go study pathology!!!

Right thing to hold classes. Wrong thing to talk about doing holding classes. Announcing it to the class was probably good, since there MAY have been someone who hadn't heard already, but we didn't need to go on ad nauseum. The fact that it happened is powerful enough.

It kind of sucked that he made the speech right before the test too. If you had not heard already and got the info RIGHT before a pretty tough test... I think it would kind of knock the wind outa ya.

Can any of you KCOM'ers elaborate on this speech you are referring to? I'm obviously not in your class, but enjoy following your thread. Thanks in advance either way. dh

Howdy,

Doc H,

We have suffered a sudden and tragic loss of a well loved and wonderful professor over this past weekend. Our schedule for the week included three exams. The decision of the administration was to alter the regular flow of classes and exams as little as possible.

The abruptness and the timing of the announcement at the first of the week, at the beginning of our first exam, has understandably caught some of us off guard. Reflecting back on the entire week, I must agree with DoubleElle, that while I would have rather stopped to grieve, that is not the practical choice, with the practical choice being the call to professionalism.

To their credit, the administration cancelled all classes this morning including rescheduling an exam, to allow everyone who so wished to attend the funeral. To me, it shows a reasonable and compassionate approach to a very trying time for all of us.

Thanks, BigSky. I'm sorry to hear that. 🙁

Good luck on exams everyone. dh

Motivation? HEEEERRREEEE, Motivation....here, boy! (still, no motivation...maybe I should yell louder)

MOOO-TTTIII-VVVAAA-TTTIIOOONNN!

Hmmm...seems my motivation has run off with another, probably never to be seen again. Typical....just when a gal needs it most, it takes off. Motivation-substitutes are hard to come by these days...they all require too much energy or involve pain. Motivation KNEW that tonight was FRIENDS and SURVIVOR night..how could it abandon me like this? I mean, shoot, if it were just Tuesday or something, maybe I could handle being on my own..but not on TV Thursday!

If anyone out there has seen my motivation, please let me know ASAP.

mine left ages ago, along with common sense & knowledge... they must have gotten a 3 for 1 vacation package somewhere...😀

Well, I hope they are having the time of their lives...because it's 8pm on Saturday night and I've done NOTHING today in the way of studying Pharm........However, let me tell you about this 3-hour nap I took...it was wonderful!!!!! Oh, and the baseball game was okay....and college football was sort-of okay, but I kept flipping back and forth between games. Let's see...oh yeah, laundry...that got semi-done. In-laws are coming in town tomorrow and spending the night...so, tomorrow evening is a wash......SHAME ON MEEEEE! I am picking hubby up at the bars at 12:30 tonight (unless I get really lucky and pick up a random stranger!), so I have until then to get at least a little something done.

The random stranger comment was a joke (for all you serious people out there). All I can say is that he better be close to the front door (hubby, not stranger) because it's Truman's homecoming, and I don't think I can maneuver my...uh...shapely body thru a standing-room-only crowd this evening looking for him.

Have a great rest of the weekend!!!!!!

Just to make y'all giggle...😀

I'm transferring into your class from NYCOM, and I was wondering what you have heard about some of the rotation sites, in particular the St. Louis sites, the Jefferson City/Rolla site, and the Kirksville site, since those are probably my top three choices.

Thanks

Ny/KCOM -

We want details!!!! When will you be here? What is your reasoning for the transfer, if you don't mind my asking. A new kid in school...how exciting!!!!!

You can find rotation site info on line easily, but I can't remember exactly where the site is. I've never looked at it because I am set on staying in Kville. Hopefully someone will respond with that information for you.

Best wishes with your move and we'll be happy to meet you!

Kind of a long, boring story: the short version is that my girlfriend (and now an intern) matched in St. Louis, which is fine after we both found that the economics of the NYC metro area are less than fun to deal with. SO back to Missouri I go (Thank God - love NYC, hate LI). I have the rotation site selection guide and have checked out the web site, I was just curious if any third or fourth years had reported back with any info on their experiences at the rotation sites.

Thanks again

And when will you be joining us?

EEnie, MEEnie, Miney, Moe
Some of these notes have got to go.
Which ones will I choose to ignore?
And take my chances on a still passing score.

Ignore 'em all!!! Instead, get someone to do some cranial on you. It works great for learning neuro by osmosis. 😀

how odd, I find myself oddly drawn back to the SDN board. hmm...
perhaps I'm going crazy for new and interesting ways to procrastinate. I have this odd feeling infectious will be a duzy, so I dont want to think about it 😀

hi guys

Hey, I just posted on the 'interesting difference' topic (in the osteopathic section). It refers to a post on the allopathic forum about a guy who is second-guessing his decision about being in medical school, to which I responded also last week.

Anyway, I was wondering if some of you would care to give your thoughts to these people who posted on the interesting difference topic on the osteopathic forum....I tried...but I don't think I said all I wanted or intended to day..i just rambled.

If you want all the background info, you will need to read the post in the allopathic forum, too...probably first. I think it's called 'second thoughts about medical school'.

Anyway, just thought some of you may have some excellent things to say.

drugs...drugs... drugs.... why, oh why are there so many drugs? and where can I get some??? 😉

Hey all, I just found out that I will be interviewing at your fine school on NOV 22. hope to meet some of you soon😀 😀 😀

Congrats s42! I look forward to meeting you!

Soooo, ummm....after today psych is definitely not for me!

Anyone else??😛

Ha! It looks like we all missed our 100% in psych by oh... about a year. I've looked over the notes and I still don't know what some of the answers are/were/needing to be. Sad... 🙁

😕

I have no idea what the fuss is all about. The information was presented in a clear and concise manner. The class lectures were consistent with the examination type. It isn?t as if the test was written with long paragraphs in the guise of being ?COMLEX? style. Any time there is a question that is half a page long with one multiple choice answer associated with it CERTAINLY must be well thought out. Besides, it was clearly a time to change the format for which psych was being taught. You can?t have people learn from an effective teacher for too long. Too much stability in course curriculum makes things predictable for medical students.

1. The previous statement was made by a/an

A. Schizophrenic
B. Individual suffering from a delusional disorder
C. Alcoholic showing signs of Wernicke?s
D. Type I Bipolar

I would guess the answer was B but that seems too obvious.

Welll maybe not....I mean, you could be hearing voices and you just didn't mention that key piece of information in your post. That would mean that I would have to change my answer to A.

Well, maybe not....How long have you been hearing voices? Longer than 6 monthes? Less than 6 monthes? If the later was the case than none of the answers would be correct.

You many be having some depression, again something I would just have to assume from the question. I am a bit depressed following the exam. I was even more depressed when I found out that 6 people failed the exam. My assumption that you are depressed would lead me to answer D.

Well.....execpt for the mania part. Are you still able to function? Hypomania? I would assume yes since you posted but I am not a psychiatrist, I have never worked with bipolar people. I was never a psych intern or resident. I just had a two week, 20 hour, psychiatry class. Is the answer D? How the hell am I supposed to be able to figure it out?

5 Staff; 2 projectors w/ 2 computers and 2 operators; an AV guy to keep the feedback down; mandatory quizzes to keep butts in the seats; two handouts: one with slides, one with strips so you know exactly what's going on, as long as you flip pages for awhile.

Man, this is good stuff. Good thing we gotta cardiologist teaching this stuff.

I should sing a song about insomnia, but I wont. 😀
funky. just started last week. you think it could be all those nights in a row staying up till 4am?

maybe I'm manic and I dont need the sleep... wohooo!!!!!

Bones...do you have a crush on Dean osBurnes or what?

I know I can't resist his shiney little balding head and his beaky nose. Don't even get me started!!!😉

whoa dude... Dean Burns is a hottie. I am not opposed if you want to make a move though, I wouldnt blame you.

I saw a cool morph between his cartoon and human forms. Maybe I'll post it if I can find a good copy.

Hey guys,
I am a lowly first year and I know I do not belong on this thread. But I had a question for you that I have heard many other people in my class asking. We have, obviously, been unable to find any past finals for anatomy and biochem. Can any of you give us some idea of what we can expect? I'm not quite sure how to cram that much info in my head. Are the questions going to be as detailed as on other exams? Do I need to know everything? Any help from our wise elders would be greatly appreciated! Good luck to you all!

Howdy,

P,

"I am a lowly first year and I know I do not belong on this thread"

You've cut me deep, P, really deep. You know that we're not like that here in the 'ville. Anyone paying $27K per year has the right to go anywhere that KCOM is the subject.

Your old exams from this quarter (and past years) are a helpful guide to what topics/subjects that they will likely test on. The finals tended to be more straight forward (at least to me, but then against I was sleep deprived by the time I took the final.)

If this doesn't answer your question, please stop one of us in the Commons or the hallway, in fact stop alot of us, we'd like you meet more of your class. In fact, I was just commenting the other day to JohnDO how quickly so many of you have acquired that 1000-yard stare, and to think that this is only the first quarter.

Hey guys...
I sent out a mass email just now..but I wanted to post on here too.

If anyone will be at school practicing for the practical this evening, can you please email or call me? I am in desperate need on this one...and with it being 50% of the grade....ouch!

I may have to bring Julianne with me if Jim isn't back.

PLEASE let me know!
-L.

ps - my phone number is in THIS year's directory, but NOT in last years.

if you insist I'm sure we wise elders can blirt out all sorts of crazy advice. For me, like bigsky, the biochem final seemed easier than the other tests that quarter, but I heard that it was a bit of a fluke and the previous year it was pretty rough.
One quarter in anatomy they gave us extra credit for drawing and labelling the brachial plexus and that was nice, but dont count on that one either. Basically they want to put us through absolute hell, but they dont want to fail 40 people and lose all that moolah- so they will likely strike a balance. 🙄 I'm quite sure if they could make the finals harder than the quarter tests and not fail more than a couple people they would.

My understanding is that they like to collect the finals so they can be lazy-like and keep using the same questions every year (or at least many of them), which is why you cant find any. I concur with BigSky that reviewing old tests from the quarter is helpful, and if you made review sheets for the old exams, there's the money.

good luck!!!!!

I have heard from some professors that they keep the final so that from year to year they can do statistical analysis on it to make sure the questions are fair. That may be a line of bull...but it sounds better than the are lazy!

you might also check the acofp cd we gave you . . . there were quite a few great study aids on there.

that being said, BigSky offered the most sound advice: KNOW your previous exams from this quarter--more importantly, know why you missed the ones you did!

There are TONS of anatomy finals out there. I spent hours and lots of cash copying them all. Sheila Chin (i think that's right) bought all my test files. I got mine from the NOWPA files, but if you aren't in NOWPA, you are out of luck. However, it may look like there are none relavant to this quarter because they mix and match the quarters each year. So, you have to go thru and look thru ALL the exams to see if they have any information pertaining to this quarter. I believe we also got our finals back last year...didn't we???

Biochem and Phys keeps their finals...no luck there.
OTM keeps their finals, too.
