KCOM Class of 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everybody, I am writing for the first time, as I just found out about this page. First let me say: I am so heartened to find that everybody is so awesome and helpful. I knew I was making the right descision to accept my seat in the class and this page just makes me so happy and excited!! I was accepted about a month ago and just sent in my deposit for the class of 06!! Also: I just talked to someone in Kirksville and am probably going to rent a 2br house on the corner of Orchard st and w hamilton, so if we need a place to have a pre-classes bash, that can be it! By the way, anybody know if that's an ok part of town? Anyway, YAY to me and all the other KCOMers, drop me a line, I'm so excited to meet you all!- Jamie

Just thought I would move our thread up on the list. I made the mistake yesterday of going to the KCOM website and that just reminded me that I still have six months to go. Just like all of you, I am extremely excited to finally be going to med school, at the same time I am nervous because I have not been in school for the past four years. I have begun to dust off some of my old textbooks again to clear the cobwebs from those neuropathways.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy your time until we have to hit the books.

Oh, I was wondering any suggestions from current students on beneficial clubs to join. I am thinking on SOMA, surgery club and the student FP club. Any input on these would be appreciated. (Paul I did see your post regarding SOMA on another thread.)

Take care all.

Ben

Ben,

I'm not the most computer literate, otherwise I'd try transfering the SOMA stuff. Anyway, there is a ton of stuff that you can become involved in if you so choose. My only advice is join the clubs you want, but, be slow on the picking up different activities. I joined SOMA right away, but, didn't become all that involved until spring quarter first year. Most of extra time was spent in Student Government Association. I'm also a member of 3-4 other clubs but, I focus on SOMA and SGA.

If anyone has specific questions on either SOMA or SGA please let me know

Sweaty Paul

Yeah, Sweaty was nothing but a dead-beat, do-nothing MS-I until I recruited him into SOMA. Now, he's a dead-beat, do-nothing MS-II with a couple of offices for his CV!!!!

ROFLMAO!!!!!

OMD,

You forget how pretty I am too!!

Thanks Sweaty Paul for the tour in early Jan., your OMT demo. was great! I too am a hugh college football fan, and I was wandering if there are any Sooner fans in Kirksville! We will be very good this year, are the Huskers rebuilding?
See ya soon... 2000 Nat'l Champs!!!!

If I may be so bold as to return to the housing thread, may I entreat unto the Kirskville veterans to dispense with some hunting advice? While I'd LOVE to buy, my financial situation teeters on the brink of absymal, and while the rental market is indeed much more reasonable than the one to which I accustomed, I am somewhat picky regarding my dwellings. Does anyone have suggestions as to how to find the perfect pad without having to give my rabbit up for adoption? I've gone the usual routes; major realtors via internet and phone, classifieds, etc. Sorry to belabor this topic, but as the drive to K'ville is 10.5 hours from here, and I'd prefer to apartment hunt only once.
Thanks, DB

I can empathize bc my drive was about 12 hours before I moved. I planned a weekend trip up here, then spent all weekend marking a map as to locations I would consider living in and locations I would not. I spent some time with a couple of realtors (by appointment--they love to help KCOMers) and saw some properties in the paper (most of these people own more than one property, so ask about others opening up soon--this is how I found my place). Then when I would talk to the people on the phone later, I could check my map against their address and tell them if I wanted more info or not. KV is small enough that this is a feasible plan.

Hi all. I posted this in the "Wanted/Housing" forum and got no love so I thought I would try here.

I will be an MSI at KCOM this August and was curious about the housing situation. I have received info from KCOM about the student apartments and, while they seem okay, I was wondering if any current students could give me the skinny on student housing as well as apartments around town. I mean, the student apartments seem cheap, but could I get just as good a deal on a 1 bedroom apartment somewhere else? Any besides, the student apartments DON'T HAVE A.C.!!!! Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Josh

Hey Josh,
When did you get the housing info from KCOM? I haven't heard a peep from them. I'm not too interested in living on campus, but just curious if they sent any other information along with it.

I called over a month ago to let them know that I was interested in the student housing. They said they would put me on a list to receive info a little bit sooner than the rest of the Class of 2006. That is probably why I have received the housing info and you have not. BTW, only KCOM student housing info was included, nothing else. Take care...

Josh

The admissions dept holds a binder full of places to live "off-campus". Last year I had good luck with Century 21. I rented my place in the Woodwind apartment complex without even coming out to see it (they sent my pics via email). Most people will warn you aginst renting sight unseen. I can tell you that the Woodwinds are a pretty safe bet. You may pay a little extra to live here (still cheap). The place is pretty nice, it has a pool, tennis courts, storage, covered parking, a community garden, etc. It takes about 8 minutes to get to school (that's commuting all the way across town). Anyway, check with the admissions dept and some of the major reality agencies.

Let me stress...there are NO apartment shortages in Kville!!! The 'for rent' section in the paper is 2.5 columns long! Currently, it is estimated that at least 25% of rentals are VACANT right now. You won't have a problem! When KCOM sends you all the information, call the real estate agents and make appointments. They will spend all day with you if they have to.

My advice...ask for something AWAY from the Truman students.

Don't sweat the housing thing!!!

We have two, non-messy/stinky cats that satisfy my baby-lust....so you can see that they are important to keep around. :)
We have to do this house-finding thing sight unseen cuz we are in Washington state and simply can't afford to come out to find a house. We do have friends helping a bit with info and numbers....and that makes me feel a bit more secure about renting sight unseen....but still....

i'll be attending KCOM this august and i'm from milwaukee, anyone from 2006 from wisconsin or even better milwaukee?

Wifty-
Each unit in the Woodwinds is independently owned. This means that it is up to the landlord for that unit. There are people who live here with pets. In your search remember to mention that you are KCOM students, it makes a big difference. Good luck!

Wifty•••••Yes, the complex, as a whole, allows pets 20 pounds & under -- technically, only 1 per apartment, but that is not strongly enforced. Like the poster above points out, all of the rentals are individually owned and are therefore subject to additional rules as set by the owner.

I am one of the owners there...and I allow pets 20 pounds and under. However, I already have a renter...but, he has not confirmed whether or not he will continue as my tenent thru his second year. If I hear to the contrary, I will gladly drop you a line.

Please let us know because I love my furry animals and would hate to part with them if I don't have to.

UWM01 --To answer your question about wisconsins, our student Dean (Dean Gaber), Student Goverment Association President (Chad Radke) and our Director of Admissions (Lori Haxton) are all cheese-heads. The weird part is that none of them seem to be embarrassed about it either. There are many others from Wisc. as well that I probably don't know about. Welcome to KCOM!!! The climate change will not be as dramatic for you as for some others.
For those of you house/apartment hunting....I've lived in Kirksville for 7 years now and I've lived in some dumps and in some pretty nice places. In general, I would say to be open-minded about where you live. There are some nice places, but REALLY nice places are a diamond in the rough. Just DON'T RENT ANYTHING sight unseen. ...Except for woodwinds, like Medhi said. Woodwinds are the nicest, and most expensive aparments in Kirksville. Happy Hunting!!!

how much does a single bedroom apartment cost at the woodwinds? sorry if you already answered this question.

Anyone know how full KCOM is for 2006?

Patch MEDIC and BB,

Patch - Yes NE will be good. National champs 94,95,97. Glad you enjoyed the demo and glad to see your making your way here in the fall.

BB-

It appears the class is nearly full, however, they have a couple more interview days.

Housing, yes like Double elle said there is no housing shortage here in the 'Ville. Student housing has no A.C., however, everyone has at least one window unit. You could contact 2nd year students who are in student housing to see if you could buy their a.c. and leave it in place for you to have when you arrive.

Housing Continued...I am selling a house, if anyone is interested in it let me know.

Congrats to your acceptance and choice of KCOM.

I'm staring at these black and white pictures of the student housing and I'm wondering... can anyone tell me what color the couches and carpet are? I know in the scheme of life this is not that important, but I really would like to know. :p Thanks y'all.

In the same vein, how is the noise factor in the student housing? Thin walls? Claustrophobic? Any info is appreciated.

I can't help on the color scheme, but they look old! You might look around town, its all cheap! Go Sooners!!!Final Four Mens and Womens BBall!

i'm still wondering if anyone has any info about the woodwinds apartments. price, size, location. . . any help would be great thanks!

andrea, patch medic, umw01,

I have no info on woodwinds, you'll have to pick someone else's brain on that.

Student housing, though I haven't lived there I visit friends frequently, and it isn't that bad a gig. Yeah, it's a bit institutional, but it is convienent, highspeed internet, and your close to your classmates which when struggling over enzymatic pathways isn't a bad deal. I'll talk to a couple of friends who live there and perhaps they can give you more advice.

I can tell you some stuff about the Woodwinds. The prices can vary somewhat because each unit is individually owned. We have a 3 bedroom that runs $575/month. I can tell you that there will be students reading this that think I am insane for paying that much money for a rental in K'Ville (probably could've morgaged 2 houses & a farm instead). Anyway, I believe the 2 bedrooms go for about $400-450. There is a tennis court, a pool (very nice in the summer), a community garden, a storage unit, BBQ pits, and covered parking. Hope that helps some.

one additional thing about woodwinds....they are further from the school than any other apartments in Kirksville...which is very important because Kirksville is a huge metropolis and you definitely have to consider commute time.

Yeah, BB, that extra 5 minutes you waste riding your bike across town can be valuable!

I'm just wondering if there are any kind souls out there that live in Kirksville and want to do me a favor... I am starting in the fall and have been house hunting via phone and email from Connecticut. I really have no resources to get down to Kirksville. I am about to sign a lease under the dreaded "sight unseen" conditions. Would anyone cruise by 801 W Hamilton st in Kirksville and give me an opinion? It should be a small house across from a church. I would not be paying much for it, and as a result am not expecting too much, but I just want to make sure that from the outside it isn't totally uninhabitable-looking. I will be forever indebted. Jamie

hey fellow KCOMers!

student apartments are pretty nice actually. You might find cheaper in town, but 345-385/month ain't bad. That includes water, heat, ethernet, and modest furnishings, but not electricity (which runs me less than 15/month), phone, or cable- which I do without (...ha! as if I had the time!). Its very nice to have people around all the time so you don't get lonely in your coop- and it doesn't hurt to be across the street from your classes.

I wouldn't recommend it for families because the social scene isn't quite as critical and you could probably rent a nice small house nearby for 450-500/month.

land-line phone bills here are actually suprisingly high because of hidden fees. I actually found that having a cell phone is cheaper than what I'd be paying for a land-line phone and made the switch a few months ago (especially since most of my calls are long distance and night/weekend). If ya don't like the cell phone radiation/vibes you can get a cell speakerphone for cheap (check the sanyo 4700). you'll probably want one when on call later anyway. One thing to know though- you only have 2 options for carriers- Sprint PCS (which is nice) and cellular one (I think- check on that).

anyway... those are my housing tips- I hope they help somone.

-bones :D

DOJamie I haven't seen your house specifically, but I know the street, as I live one block over. It is not a dumpy neighborhood by any means...most of the houses on the street are fairly manicured. Some of the streets are cobblestone as well. I wouldn't think there would be a great chance for disappointment. I'll pay attention the next time I drive by.

Regarding the cell phone coverage, my research has yielded that the two main providers are US Cellular (a division of ATT) and AllTell, both of which have websites with plenty of handy information. My sources (most recently consulted last month) tell me that while Sprint is promising coverage in the area, it is not yet established. Hope this helps! DB

Without going into detais here, I can tell you that I have had Alltel coverage for the last 9 months and have been very disappaointed. I am currently planning a huge celebration for the day that I get out of my policy. Check very carefully before deciding to go with cell coverage (especially in an area with as few options as this).

Cell coverage here isn't great but I have not had any problems. I use an external antennae when traveling between here and KC or Columbia withoout problems.

I am actually using Verison. You can't sign up for it with a Kirksville number but it works great. I know of at least one other classmate who also went with Verison and she is very happy as well.

I really don't think you need a cell phone i Kirksvile though and if you think you want it for rotations wait and see where you end up as a 3rd year and then shop around. :p

sprint PCS IS covered in the area, and though the reception averages 1-2 bars on my phone in most places, the sound quality is no different than a regular land-line and I've never gotten dropped (which I hear might be a problem for some of the others).

thanks for the clarification on the other brands though.

regards,

-bones KCOM '05

I was extremely disappointed to find that Southwestern Bell was operating on K'ville. I have had the displeasure of using them in the past and they are extremely over-priced for what you get out of them. I found out that there was a very reasonably priced competitor in the area I was in a switched. The company I am referring to is Birch Telecom, you may have seen their adds in KC, they usually have a dog on them (not sure why).

Should anyone be interested in inexpensive long distance, go check out www.lowermybills.com my wife and I have been more than pleased with their service. State to state is currently 4.5 cents a minute and there are no fees.

Ben

Hey all,

My fam and I lived in Woodwinds a little over two years ago. They are further away, but I made it to the hospital (campus) in 8 mins when my son was born. They are also by far the nicest of any apt.s in the 'ville. ANy other questions about kirksville or rotations or anything. Let me know.

•••quote:•••Originally posted by UWM01:
•i'm still wondering if anyone has any info about the woodwinds apartments. price, size, location. . . any help would be great thanks!•••••Woodwinds are the nicest accomodations in the Ville, in my opinion. but, they also tend to be more pricey. It is an all-owner unit condos complex. However, probably 60+% of them are owned for the purpose of renting out. When I lived there, ~40% of the residents were KCOM students. The rest tend to be older folks w/ & w/o families -- very few TSU students -- cuts down on the noise & the wild parties, which can be good or bad, depending on your disposition.

If you're interested, you can contact any of the real estate agencies in town for info on what's available. Most of the 'land barons' in K'ville contract with the real estate firms to manage their rental porperties -- esp the Woodwinds owners.

One guy who manages his own properties is Jessie Green. His phone number will be in the phone book. Call him and ask if he has anything or knows of anything coming open. He is a very friendly gentleman.

My own unit is already occupied at this time and the renter, who will be a second-year KCOM student soon, is most likely going to remain there.

If you have not seen the Woodwinds, go out and check them out. My wife & I enjoyed living there during my 2 years in the Ville. There is a pool, a small children's play area, huge grounds that are well maintained and, in the center of the complex, is a large park-like area complete with several concrete pads, outdoor furniture and cooking grills. We had several outdoor cookout/parties there!

  :D  :p :D

And, you have to really watch for the rush hours: a.m. rush begins promptly at 07:40 and ends at 07:55 and evening rush begins at 16:50 and ends promptly at 17:05.

Well said, Old man Dave. Glad to hear nothing's changed in 2 yrs. I am kinda glad to come back in 6 weeks to graduate. It's not that I miss the 'ville, but hey lots of stuff, memories, and friendships were made there.

I was just back in the 'Ville for Alumni Board of Directors meetings the first weekend in April. It was very very odd! In most ways, K'ville had not changed one iota...probably, other than the supplanting of the horse & buggy by the motor car -- has not changed too much at all.

However, at the same time, it was strangely different. Went to the DuKum, Aileron's, Woodie's and Bogey's and my classmates were no where to be found! Loads of folks I knew from the class below me...but none of the ones I know best. And, a ton of first years I had never met...did get to meet a few of them and they were the typical friendly KCOM students.

Oh well...can't wait for 13 months, 2 weeks & 2 days to pass -- cause I will be in your shoes then!!!

Happy GRADUATION 2002!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMD,

So glad to hear that you missed me...I feel all weepy on the inside now.

Sweaty

I did my best to avoid you! Visited all of the finest watering holes in the 'Ville and you were not there. Did get some quality time in with Jamie W, Chad, Liz & Scott...and a couple of my old classmates! I really enjoyed getting to visit, while I had an adult beverage or two or three or four, with Carrie -- who could not imbibe as she was on call with the fetus fetchers!
