Hello Everyone,
I am a male who just got accepted to KCU COM not too long ago. I wanted to look for a roommate for housing. Roommate would have to follow certain guidelines such as not bringing their gf into the apartment room and not bringing a dog into the apartment room either. I am looking for room in the century towers. I can't wait to meet you guys!

Lol what...I'm guessing you had bad experiences with these in the past? Not bringing a gf into a room is kind of a strange requirement.

Hey maybe his girl game is just too good and he always ends up stealing his roommates girlfriends for himself. He could just be looking out for his future roommates best interest. Aka Mr. Steal Your Girl!
 
Has anyone here tried to send in their CT application for a double without a specific roommate in mind? It says that you won't be able to add or edit applicant info once you send the deposit in, so I'm just wondering how people worked around this.

I called them about this and they said you can go ahead and send in the deposit without a roommate and they will help you match with someone else later on in the spring when they know how many current residents are staying/leaving. Or if you find a roommate later on I'm sure you can call them and let them know who that will be, and then get half your deposit reimbursed from your future roommate. They told me to just pay for the deposit and get a spot on the waitlist ASAP no matter if you have a roommate or not. I'm doing the same thing as you, applying for a double in CT without a roommate yet, but I'm sure between here and the Facebook page roommate requests will start popping up left and right so I'm not too worried as of now.
 
How hilly is KC? Is it bike friendly?

I'm strongly considering driving to KC with all my stuff, then selling my car so I can bike around for the first few years.

It's not too hilly though there are hills here still.

Unless you live at Market Station, a car will be necessary.

The city is not that bike friendly IMO, you don't wanna bike downtown to the area by the school which is sketch area. Just keep the car. Also there's only like 2-3 grocery stores nearby in downtown that range from absurdly expensive to low end cheap and unhealthy foods.[/QUOTE]

Thanks for the info! I heard gas is cheap there too right? Maybe my car insurance will go down since it's KC hahah (vs a big city)

Gas is SOOO cheap especially someone coming from CA. It's 1.50/gallon here.

Car insurance is a pain hahah. But it's all doable on a budget!

Hilly enough, not really, and an awful idea. You need a car.

You'll make back the money on insurance by being able to go to Costco and other places and buy food in bulk as opposed to shopping entirely at the Downtown market which honestly despite being upscale has a pretty mediocre selection of certain things.

I wouldn't say everyone, but even my friend bought a car recently after basically getting tired of needing people to drive her around everywhere.

Honestly, things are close, but when you're in medical school close doesn't mean lets turn a 5 minute car ride into a 30 minute walk.

Do you know what kind of insruance plans we get as students?

Well, MO recently rejected expanding medicare so you're somewhat screwed if you're going to need to get anything especially if you need something beyond catastrophe insurance.
 
So, I read on their website that CT allows pets. Does anyone know if there is a pet fee?
More importantly, would it be a bad idea to bring my cat with me to medical school?

CT does allow pets but there is a monthly pet fee of $20/month and it is SO WORTH IT. My cat is my world and for sure keeps me sane when I'm stressed. 100% recommend haha.
 
KCU just turned 100!

There will be some new things in store in the coming year but I'm not aware of what they are (even as a student ambassador!).

In regards to study habits: I always attended lecture in undergrad. Do you think those who attend lecture, versus skipping lecture, are at any major disadvantage?

Also, any tips or tricks you would be willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not at all because those who skip lecture still watch it online! Heck, @SynapticDoctah doesn't go to any lecture and is killing each class (higher ranked than me!).

At first for me I would go to every class but then you start reading the professors and know which ones are important to go to and which ones you can probably watch later just to emphasize what you cover in the power points.

Sometimes though, it's a pain to wait a few hours for lectures to be posted and so when an exam is nearing sometimes I feel it best to just go to lecture so that I have more time to review everything.

What I normally do is try to stay ahead which I know sounds impossible but it really isn't because during my first pass of the power point (usually the night before or the morning of before lecture) all I'm doing is getting a general review of what is going on and what they will be tlaking about. I limit my first pass to about 5-15 minute depending on the number of slides (if it's more than 100 I'll give myself around 15 minutes). Before I do my next pass of the material of the power point I try and do any DSA's or recommended readings that align with the material in the ppt. Then come my second pass I should have a solid understanding of what is going on and right after the second pass will do my best to remember and pertinent pathways or just facts that need rote memorization.

Probably the best thing that's helped me so far has been to utilize multiple resources for studying. Yes the ppt is everything you should know but reading the system in First Aid, BRS, and any other book has so far been a great help in exposing myself to the material as many times as possible with some variation that assists with your understanding (because some wording of the material makes more sense than others).

Additionally, as the exam get's closer, I give myself more time (meaning less sleep time) to review all of the material I need to know for the exam. This dedicated review I try to limit now to 2-3 passes of all the material. Hopefully those are some good tips and lemme know if you have any more questions!
 
Anyone know when the matriculation fee is due? All I can find on the website (and my seat hold letter for that matter) is March 2016. Does anyone know the exact date?

Sorry another important thing (and this is to everyone). I hope my previous post did not come off as "no one go to lecture" because it's a rule that at least 50% of the class must be present or the faculty of the lecture has the right to withhold the video posting of the lecture.

Also FYI: there will be lectures within the PCM course that are Case Interactive Studies. These are MANDATORY. You don't want to be the kid who doesn't show up and Dr. Dubin (who sometimes leads these CIS's) call out your name (they have a list with them) and you not be there.

The acceptance letter said July 30 will (tentatively) be the last day of orientation and when the White Coating Ceremony will be held. I assumed classes would start the week after orientation, so August 1. Is that a wrong assumption?

I think HigherPrimate meant the start of orientation is July 25 and real class would start August 1.
 
Can anyone give me an overview of Accepted Students Day, and whether it's worth it to go alone? No one in my family is available to come

I did not attend, as I couldn't justify taking time off work and the travel expense. As far as I can tell there was absolutely no downside to not going.

Mine was 2 years ago and I'm not sure if anything has changed. You listen to faculty and Dean talk about the curriculum and how they look forward to you coming here. You get to take a mini tour of the facilities. A small breakfast is served and goodie bags are given out.

The only reason I would bring family is if they want to check out the campus, neighborhood, or housing options.

I spoke to Admissions and Meghan said she thought it was March 15th, but they would be sending out mailings with the info in a few weeks.
 
Congrats everyone and welcome to the KCU fam 🙂 was able to take a looksie of the new administration building and must say I'm excited for you all to see it. It's def a great addition to campus for the students to use (more coffee!).
