Hi all! Would like some quick input on while choosing between these two wonderful programs.
KCU
Pros
Touro
Pros
Summary: I always wanted to attend med school on the East Coast, but I don’t want to sacrifice quality in case I want to shoot for a competitive specialty (i.e. radiology or anesthesiology). I know I don’t want to do surgery. I know KCU classes are optional attendance and Touro is mandatory but I don’t really care either way. I also thought P/F was a must-have previously, but I see how traditional grades can help me stand out as a DO applicant against MDs, especially as Step 1/Level 1 is already P/F as well.
KCU
Pros
- Pass/fail
- A bit more reputable from what I’ve gathered, original 5 DO and all that
- Affiliated residency programs
- In the Midwest (I grew up on the East Coast–particularly Florida–and I don’t know a soul in the Midwest)
- Research opportunities seem a little sparse
- Rotation sites are scattered all over the country
- No support system nearby. Flights between KCMO and FL are somewhat infrequent and very expensive.
Touro
Pros
- In NYC, where it is diverse and there is no shortage of hospitals and institutions to connect with. Robust clinical sites in the NYC metro area for 3rd/4th year. I’m sure research and networking opportunities are better.
- Have a huge family presence in Manhattan, Long Island, NJ, and my old college best friends also live in the city so strong emotional support system
- Would really like to match into a residency in the NY area
- Graded
- Seems less reputable than KCU
