KCUMB Class of 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do these professors have a betting pool with the winner of the pool being he or she that has given the worst, most disjointed lecture? These arent learning sessions, they are lists of disease states and processes that are out of context for us.

If I think of the worst teachers at our school (for my learning style) they all magically happen to be Dubinites, why is that?
The only good one has been Saxena thus far. At least he told us what is important to know.

I disagree. I think Friedlander has been the poorest lecturer yet. Disjointed, helter skelter, without context. Brilliant pathologist? Sure. Exceptional educator? Not even close

For my learning style, my favorites so far have been Dr. Karius, Dr. Saxena and Dr. White. To be fair to Dr. Friedlander, I think the intro to path stuff is difficult material to teach since it is basically an overview of a wide variety of concepts from different subjects. Now crossing my fingers that Dr. Puthoff is good.

Yea, I didn't want to come off as rude. McCormick is so nice, and saxena was alright and I have no idea about putthoff but he has had a rocky start. We'll see, just trying to keep my head down and work.

What's a Dubinite?

I'm assuming he means professors that were previously at RVU or TCOM that are now here.

Not going to name anyone on a public forum (I will in PMs), but I can think of 2 or 3 off the top of my head that I'd consider FAR worse than him so far. I'm also not going to judge him off of 3 lectures, especially when one of which was basically an intro and there are this many definitions that he's trying to get across. I'll wait until I see his test questions to give a real perspective.

This is the closest to what I like. I love Karius and if her test questions didn't have so many errors/were less convoluted I think she'd be hands down my favorite lecturer. I don't think Saxena really 'tells us what we need to know' so much as writes ridiculously easy test questions. I'd also put Dr. White, Dr. McCormick, and Kenna way up there on my list. Dr. White is just solid, Dr. McCormick is like a more organized Stephens because she hits the important topics over and over and over again in multiple lectures if you pay attention (which the repetition through multiple lectures was nice), and Kenna is basically cliff notes for the boards. There's a few more who I think I would like a lot, but I'm can't really say since we've only had them for 2-3 lectures all year.

I don't have to wait until a professor puts out questions on an exam to give a real perspective on the quality of his lectures. Also, those were more like 6 lectures worth of material and I bet a major percentage of his lecture time to us

You guys may need a reminder that you are on a very public forum.🙂 Just sayin....

Question for current students: are there any benefits to a Welch Allyn kit vs the Heine one the bookstore sells? Trying to gauge prices here and attempting to understand why people are going as high as $650 for a used kit without a stethoscope xD help! Haha.

Don't waste your money at the bookstore - buy a used set from a 3rd year without a stethoscope (there will be loads of 3rd years putting them up for sale on the class of 2019 facebook page in the next few months - trust me). The old sets are better quality anyway - bookstore isn't worth it.

I would love to buy one used but it's not worth it to spend $650 on a used kit and then pay $100-200 for a stethoscope - might as well buy it new for $850 haha. I'm hoping as it gets closer, third years will be more desperate to sell their kits and hopefully they'll be cheaper! Thanks for your advice though!

Wouldn't count on the 3rd yrs selling it for cheaper closer to orientation - I don't remember that happening this past year (but I could definitely be wrong). But FWIW just because its used doesn't mean its any worse than a new one - I actually think that my used Welch Allyn sphygmo & BP cuff is far superior quality than the new one the bookstore sells. oto/opthalmoscopes are pretty much all the same... Don't get anything but the Littman Cardio III - allheart.com has pretty good sales, you might be able to get one cheap or no shipping. I paid $120 no shipping for the blackout edition w/ engraving - it was a steal.

Welch Allyn is a better known brand in medicine compared to Heine.

---
I don't know if a majority of 2nd years will even be around during orientation. They should be at their rotation sites by then.

In that case, I'll try for a Welch Allyn kit for $500 haha. Also, how necessary is a card III? Would it be the worst if I got a card II? Or is the three at least worth the price?

Get a used kit - better quality and we use them like 5 times so you can't even tell they're used.

I am so sick of this. I'm going through my second pass of chapter 1 and I STILL can't absorb anything. WE NEVER TALKED ABOUT ANY OF THIS IN CLASS SO I DON'T F*CKING KNOW WHAT TO KNOW!!! TEXTBOOKS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE READ COVER TO COVER!!! THEY ARE A F*CKING REFERENCE SOURCE!!!!! WHY DON'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THIS??????

Sorry, just needed to vent.

Hahaha. Yeah....this.
I keep telling myself "play the game so you can go to residency and learn how to doctor"

Chapter 1 is a new chapter in robbins that was just added recently so I'm on the same page as you as far as not absorbing much. For Chapter 2 and beyond, open up the learning objectives, read it 2-3 times before starting and then go through the chapter. Or you could watch pathoma first. Anytime you come across something from the LO's, write it out in your own words. Skim everything else. Note that this strategy might not be enough for Dr. Putthoff after our first midterm.

Watch Pathoma, read the corresponding chapter to make connections. Win.

But if you can't even handle watching Pathoma I don't know what to tell you. And I guess I'm in the minority that finds it a nice change to not have to mindlessly scroll through power points.

Pathoma you can open up in VLC medial player and watch it at 1.x speed. Its super helpful. I'll echo @Elevencents in saying that pathoma plus the chapter is a great strategy. Also, i'm not getting hung up on the nitty gritty molecular details so even Big Robbins is more manageable if you skip some of the finer details.

Do you do the entire 3 hours per chapter that pathoma demands?
Yes, watch all of pathoma. It is one of the best resources out there and is VERY worth your time. THEN read corresponding chapter in robbins while keeping eye on the learning objectives/definitions. You can also speed it up pathoma on the site to 1.4 or 1.7x to save some time. Also the LOs cover from chapter 2 on since Chapter 1 was a new chapter added in 2015. Im not sure how they will test us over chapter 1 though.

... they might not..? Considering its a review of basic cell biology.

Chapter 4 of Robbins is not covered in Pathoma is it?

Is everyone here using Pathoma? One of the second years told me he only used Robbins for Putthoff's class and only missed one question. Unfortunately, I have no idea how he studied, but I'd like to think that just using Robbins is enough...

That's about what I paid to buy off a third year. Honestly, you really don't need a $150 stethoscope. You can find some pretty decent ones for $25-30. For what we use them for you really don't need to pay that much for them and from talking to 3rd and 4th years cheaper ones work just fine. Everyone I've talked to said they're really not necessary unless you're going into cardio. There've been plenty of threads on here debating it, but typically the people with experience tend to agree that you don't need to pay $100 to get a steth that'll get your through med school.

Sorry, sometimes it's tough to keep our unbridled passion restrained, as can be seen from some of the other posts...🙄

:

I am not using pathoma. I have BRS path (for outline) and Robbins.

Im using pathoma only so that Robbins makes more sense to me upon reading it. Otherwise I get lost pretty easily.

Snow virgin question here:

So we are moving to KC from California and have never (obviously) had to live in the snow. We are looking for apartments right now. Do we need a garage/car port for our vehicles? We are looking at some nice apartments in Overland Park and some of them have garages but it adds around $200 a month to the lease. Is it needed?

Also, another separate question:

My brother and one of my good friends are getting married August 15th and the 22nd respectively. School starts for us August 1st. Am I going to be overwhelmed by the 2nd/3rd week of school or should I be ok if I study on the plane?

You don't need a garage, starting your car for a couple minutes in the snow is usually sufficient....but I definitely don't think missing 2 consecutive weekends is smart.....the first section is pretty intense....

So not even a car port?

I don't really have a choice. I can't miss my brothers wedding...

Then you will just have to work extra hard to make sure you don't fall behind. The first section is pretty intense if you don't have a strong background in biochemistry. Class averages on those exams were pretty low.

Definitely don't need any covered parking - I haven't had one all year. Any covered parking is nice to have, but definitely not necessary.

And I also would not advise missing weekends during the 1st section... I mean do whatya gotta do - but be forewarned, its tough.

Alrighty. So it looks like I'll be buckling down and studying the entire plane ride and Maybe even after the wedding. Thanks!

If I were you, I would write notes in advance, sync them to your tablet/phone and study any time you get a chance. Theres a lot of material so it will help you a ton if you can condense it.

It doesn't. We have never lived in snow before.

You don't need chains for a couple inches of snow 😉 I don't know of any place you "need" chains. Some parts of New York during freak storms maybe? But yeah, no need for even 4-wheel drive here.

What time do you guys usually get out of class on Fridays on average?

That question has no real answer. Every week is different. Honestly.

I went back to our August schedule and every Friday was a different time....especially depending on what lab group you're in.
