KCUMB Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, I'm grateful for the tutors. I got one for OMM and it definitely helped. 👍

Also, Smith Hall is awesome. I'm studying in one of the rooms right now. 😀

Oh no ! LOL it was appealing to me so I wouldnt get on facebook or SDN while studying. I would study at my library at the U, but all I hear is giggling from Lord knows where and ipods that are too loud.

 Well, it's actually quiet in the Smith Hall study rooms if you want it to be. That's not an issue. The only problem is you have to exercise self-control and not use the computer in the room to check in on SDN like I am right now. I should be studying embryology!

ewww. Embryology is tricky stuff. It was tricky for me at the undergrad level. However I had to study it in humans/frogs/birds. :scared:

LOL. I agree. Yeah, it definitely doesn't get any easier, or less tricky, apparently, even if it is only human embryology. It's definitely NOT my most favorite subject here. I'm currently struggling through CNS development. I'm going to have to diagram it all out... :scared:

I've heard that histology is tough. It takes a while to get used to what healthy vs. unhealthy tissues look like. Or so I'm told.

I'm doing alright with histo so far, but I can see how pathohistology can be difficult for some. The key to histo is looking at a lot of pictures and learning to picking out the key diagnostic structures and features, or alterations, in the case of pathohistology. Our path professor is really good and he comes up with great ways to help us with pathohistology. He gets us directly involved and engaged instead of just doing a powerpoint presentation. I usually leave his lectures feeling like I really learned something that is going to be helpful for my rotations and even farther down the road into residency. There is a decidedly clinical feel to his lectures.

Well, my family (support system) is in Kansas. I have a desire to practice in the midwest. KCUMB's curriculum. Their percentage 90 + get their first choice match. Large list of core sites to work with 3rd/4th year. Opportunity to go into more fields it seems than WVSOM (stat speaking). All of those things IMO trumped a bad vs. good interview experience. Also the availability of tutors, I like the study rooms at Leonard Smith Hall. Plus new study areas in Weaver next year. Have you cancelled any interviews now T-funk? Where else are you looking at?

I really like all those things about KCUMB too. I also think I would like that Pathguy. I haven't cancelled any interviews yet. I have two this week. We'll see after that. I really want to explore my options thoroughly before making a decision and am trying to be as open minded as possible. I may end up having to cancel one interview due to money/time/school/work issues but I really don't want to. I really like KC bc I know I could stay there for rotations and possibly even residency and not move my kids around but I hate big cities. It's a really hard decision.

If you don't mind me asking, what made your interview day not so good? It was my first interview, and I honestly have been measuring all my subsequent interviews against that -- interesting to see how we had such different interview experiences! I had no expectations of KCUMB before I went there, but loved the school.

Well in hindsite now, I think my morning leading up to the interview was most of it. I drove into the morning sun that was brutally blinding for 30-45 mins. I had an excruciating migrane after that. Plus due to the sun, I couldnt even read road signs so I got lost in downtown KC, nervous I was gonna be late, with a migrane headache. So the residual effects of that most likely had an affect on my mood. 😉 Other than that, I thought the quiz they pulled on us was pointless. Instead they could have done a presentation/discussion about osteopathic medicine. I knew my stuff, but a few poor souls didnt. I just thought the "hey you, what is" ....... kinda bolagne. My interview was tough, I was asked questions about health care, ethics, and nothing about myself. But still, it is a smart decision on my part after much consideration to attend this institution.

Okay I just sent my secondary but now I'm kind of scared. What kind of quiz was this?

It's not really a quiz, as such. It's sort of like a pimp session about osteopathic prinicples and history, which occurs when you meet up in the conference room at the Alumni center in the morning. You may or may not be called on to answer, but the questions aren't that hard, if you prepared a bit beforehand. It catches some folks by surprise. Basically, it's designed to prep you a bit about osteopathy. It's a good idea to look over osteopathic Hx and principles before your interview day. 😉

Wow, that's definitely interesting and a good thing to know in case I get an interview there. Thanks!

FYI, while the "pimp" quiz session may catch a few people by surprise (and no one likes to look bad in front of others, especially at an interview when you don't know who is listening), the purpose is really just to refresh your memory and prepare you for interviews.

Believe it or not, they want you to do well in your interviews. At KCUMB, the primary purpose for the interview is to assess your personality and screen out those who would really clash (due to ego, poor attitude, sociopathic disposition...). They would rather not turn someone away because he/she was asked something "simple" about osteopathic medicine, was caught off-guard, got rattled, had a personality nose-dive, and basically tanked the interview due to nerves. They want to see the "real" you, to the best of their abilities, which means talking to someone who is prepared.

It sounds like a few professors are asking some more difficult and directed questions this year about medical ethics, the health care system, etc. There are a few professors interviewing this year that haven't in the past. Still, I believe the intent is to gage your personality and communication skills during your response, not judge the correctness (or lack thereof) of your answer.

Anyway, a big 👍 to all the newly accepted applicants! I won't be in KC next year so I'll have to leave my carefully selected and groomed class of 2011 to pass on my infinite wisdom.

Alright, this is a little off topic, more like waaay off topic but who is planning on snagging tickets to the Garth Brooks concert in KC MO. for the november concert? I will fork over big dough to see that performance. 👍

Ya buddy. I guess he picked 2 cities to perform for a charity benefit. Since he's coming to KC, I will try my hardest to get tickets.

He's got to be like 60 now.

Anyhow, the people at KCUMB told me that they could have a decision on whether or not to invite me for an interview by the end of the week. The VP of admissions also said that they use primarily science GPA and MCAT to evaluate applicants, and that he suspected that I would get an interview. I am optimistic, after reading such great things on here about them.

They use primarily science GPA and MCAT as their numerical criteria, but there are a lot of other factors in your application that they consider. Some schools stress the cumulative GPA, some (especially DO) schools don't stress the MCAT as much, some look at strength of schedule types of things that are harder to assign a number to, or even post-grad coursework if you have it. But that's just the two numerical things that they have decided are the best indicators for academic ability. Other things, such as EC's, personal statements, and especially recommendations are also very important.

Okay well I think my recommendations are solid. My DO letter is 2 pages (according to interfolio), and I also have letters from two professors who thought enough of me to hire me as their personal trainer (both triathletes).

Also got one from a nurse at the ER who knows me pretty well, an employer, and another prof.

Try to contact an MS1 and an MS2 to see if Dr. Friedlander is having one of his pathology lectures that day. Try to attend one (especially if its in the afternoon). If you're fortunate to be able to sit in one of his lectures, I can almost guarantee you'll submit a deposit check at the school office before you leave campus that day.

its a bit too pricey to fly out after that, im going to have a TONN of trouble deciding between nova and kc when its time to decide, but im not thinking about that yet, im enjoying that I know ill be going somewhere, both schools dont require a deposit until dec. so i can sit on it for a while and collect as many peoples input as possible.

by the by, does anyone know when the year ends for M1s?

At KCUMB, the current MSI class will be done May 16. That's the day of their cumulative final and shelf exam (shelf is not graded, just a diagnostic tool, cumulative is pass/fail only).

So, who’s planning on living at that pimp hospital across the street? I just sent in my deposit the other day and I’ve set up for a room on the 5th floor. A few of the current students kind of tried to discourage living there because they said it’s a lot like living in a dorm. However, I’ve been working as an RA for the last 3 years so the tiny rooms and prospect of random fire alarms doesn’t really bother me.

The only thing for me appealing about CT is the fact that the school is literally across the street. However, Im spoiled now and am used to living in a two bedroom apartment by myself. I have to have it dead silent to sleep/study so I am gonna buy or rent somewhere near roeland park. 😎

We live very close to Roeland park... in Mission. We're renting a house in a very quiet (old) neighborhood.

i really liked CT.. i mean that room they showed us was pretty pimped out but i think its nice to haev the library and lounge right there for when you dont want to leave the building to study, an you dont need any additional materials other than what you already have.

plus the hottub is always a plus lol.

but mostimportantly, living in a dorm like setting my freshman year of college really allowed me to make some good friends (+ bonuses) with my classmates and since the majority of the M1 class will be in there id probably want to be as well.

Quick... What is innervated by the long thoracic nerve?

Give me origin/insertion/action while you're at it. And no cheating.

😱 I'm being pimped by a pre-med.

J/K... it's cool. I actually needed that to get me studying:

The long thoracic nerve innervates the Serratus anterior muscle, which is attached proximally to the lateral aspects of ribs 1-8. It wraps around to the back and attaches distally to the medial border of the scapula on its anterior side. Its action is scapular protraction. 😀

Excellent.

I know my musculoskeletal anatomy pretty well. I also have a couple clients with scapular winging, one of which I suspect LTN dysfunction.

You are going to have a huge head start when you get to the MSK section. 👍

Somehow, I suspect my head start will be small. I have no doubt that most of the anatomy is a huge step up from my level of understanding. But I do know a few things, so it sure won't hurt.

Friensds with benefits? Always a good time.

that, and sometimes just benefits

Living in the same building with said beneficial friend could be dangerous; never backfired?

And no, by backfired I don't mean some type of bizarre physiological disorder, like injaculation.

not really cuz im a nice guy and never really tried to misdirect anyone

Okay, so what is the standard turnover time from all complete-->interview notification/rejection/whatever?

For me it was:
Interview notfication on 9/3
supplemetal complete 9/16
interview 9/25
acceptance 10/2

So you were invited in before you did the secondary?

I called today and they said I'm still under review. Hopefully I'll hear something early next week.

yea they invited me before the secondary; so did nova and western

those are my interviews so far with WVSOM also just added to the mix, but im going to cancel this one, im not interested

Hi all,

I was wondering if any one who has already interview or attends KCUMB can tell me more than the website about the Spirituality in Medicine program/class/concentration? I am very interested in blending Christianity and my future medical practice so I am drawn to any program that offers such interest in spirituality, but at the same time I don't know much about it and was wondering what religion they mean when they say "spirituality?"

I don't have an interview there yet, they told me Wednesday that my application was going to be reviewed on Thursday and I should hear something within a few days. I'd love to interview there and would love to have more understanding on this topic to ask intelligent questions while there.

Thanks and Congratss to all already accepted!!!

I had sent in my secondary/LORs, but I know they had not been received (since I tracked them)when I was invited for an interview. Hang in there!
