KCUMB Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Spice or anyone who knows,

I scrolled back through the posts and saw someone made mention of a tool kit we'll need (otoscopes, etc). What exactly do we need? I ask cause the doctors that my mom works with want to get me all of the equipment that I need as a "congrats and good luck" gift. Thanks for the info.

Anybody going to the information session on April 11th?

Can't wait to see the campus, didn't know if any other applicants/students would be there that are posting.

Thanks!

I have no idea what you are talking about. Would you be willing to fill me in? Thanks.

To be honest, I don't either.. 😀 I just know that I signed up for an "information session" this Friday. They have a place on their website to sign up:

http://www.kcumb.edu/kpstudent/rsvp.asp

Just wondering if anybody else on here was going to the same one... or if they had any idea what the heck it was, for that matter!

Thanks!

I would go if it was less than a 20 hr drive

I have been to 2 of them. There just like the interview day without the interview. They also have a talk about the ideal applicant, what they look for etc.. I'll say that the tour was a LOT better than interview day. 😎

You are obviously lacking in your commitment to medical school if you won't drive 20 hours for a free dinner.. j/k I'm only ~1hr away.

im only going to med school for the title of dr, screw learning anything 😀

Are there any classes the summer between MSI and MSII? I was looking at the 2007-2008 calendar and it looked like MSIIs were busy with Med Decision Making and ACLS, but wasn't positive at what point you are considered a MSII. Thanks

Pretty sure that MSI you can do research or shadow in the summer but what you do is pretty much up to you. What your talking about is after boards second year.

You should receive a list of recommended equipment and instructions on how to order them with your matriculation packet. Most people will buy the equipment as a complete package from the school.

I'd recommend checking with the school for a definite list, but this is what I recall ordering (as part of the complete equipment package), all Welch Allyn brand:

1) Pan Optic Diagnostic Set, Special (product no: 97810-MS)
2) BP Family Practice Kit (product no: DS58-MC)
3) Harvey DLX 2HD Stethoscope (product no: 5079-325S)
4) Tuning Fork C-512
5) Hammer Buck (Reflex Hammer)
6) Measuring Tape

Total Kit Price: $760.00

Get a medical equipment bag to hold everything because you will sometimes be called on to bring all your equipment with you. Also, even though I purchased the recommended stethoscope, I don't like using it. Instead, I often use a Littmann Master Cardiology stethoscope, which I purchased in addition.

spiced do u have access to the 08 match list?

I received a Littman Cardio Master Classic II as a gift. Will this be ok?

so is Phil Byrne still at KCUMB?

2006 KCUMB grad here...Congrats on everyone who will be attending KCUMB, it is a great school and you will get great training. I just thought I would let know about about an article I saw on MSN Health that came out of KCUMB. http://health.msn.com/pregnancy/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100199888

I'm glad you enjoyed your experience at KCUMB....I'm pretty excited by the thought of attending there in fall.

I read the article....as soon as I saw its title, I knew it was Dr. May....she interviewed me! Thanks for posting it; I love reading about the school and all its successes!

Hey, thanks for all the info. So I was pricing these things separately and they came out to be more than $760. So why was that one guy complaining about getting the jick-jack on this deal? Also, I was looking into physician's bags. So how silly am I gonna look with a leather physician's bag at school in the fall? Or I guess the better question is how silly am I gonna look with a leather physician's bag with a Peter Griffin sticker on it in the fall? 😀

I know... professionalism. Just smile for me.

Just found out that the information session that I was going to go to is canceled. 🙁

That's too bad... I was looking forward to it. I guess I will just have to get an interview in the fall instead! 😀

Who's Peter Griffin? And where do you get those leather bags? I think it would be pretty cool to have one of those.

How do you like the Pan Optic? I've seen a lot of people say its over kill for a med student, and you can only use the standard scope for boards. Is it worth the extra $$?

Honestly, I'd have to agree with the conventional advice. I've only ever used the standard ophthalmoscope and it serves my purposes just fine. However, the school does recommend the Pan Optic, for whatever reason.

I'm about to leave Dallas to drive to Kansas City for my interview tomorrow! WOOHOO!!! Does anyone know if they are still accepting students, or will I be interviewing for a waitlist spot? I am fine if it is just for a waitlist because hey it's not a rejection!

Hey guys, when is our last day of school next year?

I just got to Kansas City today for my interview tomorrow. We drove to the campus to check it out. Really nice, but not a great part of town. Where are the safer places to live with new apartments or condos? We plan on driving around after the interview. I just wanted to know what part of town I should look at.

Spice,

Something I didn't even think to ask... why do you like the Master Cardiology stethoscope over that DLX 2HD? Is it that you don't like the double bell? I ask cause I'm trying to decide between Littman Cardiology III and Littman Master Cardiology stethoscopes.

Nah, it's for reasons other than that. I've been using stethoscopes for a little while and I sort of know what I like. The DLX 2HD that came with the kit had a tube that was way too short for my liking. I always felt like I was right up in my patient's face each time I used it. Also, for whatever reason, I couldn't hear well with it. I was always straining and the ear pieces hurt. Too many negatives for me. I have used Littmanns in the past and had good experiences with them. One day I happened to try out a colleague's Master Cardiology steth and was impressed by how much better I could hear and how it fit just right for me. I was sold. However, I should say that there are folks that enjoy using the DLX 2HD, too, so it's sort of a personal preference.

The disadvantage to the Master Cardiology steth is that it doesn't have a bell. If you don't know how to use the tunable diaphragm, then it could potentially cause issues for you. I've used the tunable diaphragm in the past and have messed with it enough to figure it out; also, I sort of know what I am looking for in several instances and I can alternate the pressure to zoom in on it. If you haven't really used a stethoscope before and don't have a good idea what you are listening for, then I'd recommend getting the Cardiology III instead of the Master Cardiology. Both provide more firepower than you'll need as a medical student, but the Cardiology III has the advantage of having a bell, so you can switch over, if needed.

ok so i just got an email from KCUMB asking me to forward a transcript to show that I am taking the english credit required for matriculation. This is so obnoxious because I had my advisor send them a letter back in NOVEMBER explaining that I had the sufficient english credits and then KCUMB sent me a letter in Dec saying that they would count the credit and I was all set.

Now theyre telling me again I'm required to have another English credit. I'm obviously not taking any courses thinking I was fine and now I'm gonna have to hunt all over the place and find the letter they sent me as proof that they already okay'ed this.

What an aggravation.... ugh

Sorry to hear that. I hope you can come up with the letter...

Keep good records, folks. Make copies of everything, especially your immunization records. Have a KCUMB file with all your documents... You may need them in the near future.

For what it's worth, KCUMB has lost two clinical professors in the last few months and is likely to lose another shortly. One of them was the dean of the college of osteopathic medicine. This isn't a good sign, folks. It doesn't impact me, but I thought I'd share this information since it's something you probably won't hear until after you matriculate.

endocardium's back to sow seeds of doubt for the incoming class...

What else would we need to make copies of? Our acceptance letter? LOL, not being a smart A*$, I just cant think of anything else..... They emailed me about a transcript issue, I called the admissions office and made sure they knew I was currently taking Biochem. They said it was fine to send transcripts after the semester was over. Other than that, I cant think of anything I would need proof of.

Is this something to be legitimately worried about? Is this really gonna have a significant impact on my education? What are you suggesting endo? That we should go to another med school?

I don't know what you should do, WDeagle. I'm just stating a fact with no ulterior motive but to provide information. You guys are old enough to take the information, process it, and draw your own conclusions. I know some of you think I'm a horrible person, but I am really being pure in my intentions.

One professor was the dean of the college, another was the chair of the family medicine dept. (I think this will probably be a huge loss when she goes, since she was very helpful to students, a real advocate, and a good professor), and the other was involved with sports medicine/family medicine. Taken together, yes, it would be of some concern to me if I were in your shoes. Seems like a significant turn-over of some important people for the size of the school and timeframe involved. Make your own conclusions.

Anyway, that's going to be three fewer professors available for instruction. I hope they bring in suitable replacements for you all.
