KCUMB Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anybody know what KCUMB's policy is on multiple MCAT scores?

Average, highest, most recent.....

Thanks

Byrne has said the highest is used for the eval as long as it's within the specified timeframe (3 years I believe). He also stated that they will review past scores outside the window.

Well, here's exact - this was some time ago:

"Yes, but we only review scores three years out from the matriculation year. So, past scores are listed, but not considered by the admissions committee. We list them, because the interview teams like to see all scores."

im so glad i took biochem 3 yrs ago.. i remember nothing 🙂

I do have to say that I am ecstatic that we don't have to formally retake biochem bc it is my least favorite class of all time. I'm really hoping that doesn't mean I'm going to hate med school bc I really liked anatomy and physiology.

Get well DiverDoc and thanks for the offer Alex, I'll keep that in mind. 🙂

Im pretty sure Im on the last 1/2 of this damn cold. I nearly took all of the grocery stores Extra strength Tylenol and gatoraid. "FLUIDS FLUIDS FLUIDS"

Just to continue with past discussions regarding the massive amount of cheating occurring at KCUMB, I thought I would add the following. After the University had their moles read our previous threads regarding the cheating, they came up with an official statement in which they gave to our class. "I'm Sorry, we didn't know", is their official statement. I find this hard to believe since our class has reported this to the administration after every section for the past 2 years. In addition anonymous letters have gone out to the president and the dean of curriculum. They knew they were reusing questions from year to year, despite their policy that states that they will come up with new ones. However they chose to ignore the problem b/c it was easier than coming up with new questions. Can they be "Sorry" that our GPA's are now lower than expected because the cheaters had an unfair advantage?

I find it ironic that in nearly every section I have had a hard time scoring significantly above the class average. However after they decided to change the final for it not to include previous test questions I was able to score nearly 15 points above the average. This is 30 questions above my fellow classmates.

The ultimate conclusion coming from this post is that despite the University stating that they care about the students voice, it is just lip service on their part. There have been so many situations on campus that have arisen due to faculty misconduct, specifically with our medical ethics professor, that have been swept under the carpet. So if you think you need to go somewhere where you can make a difference and where your voice can be heard, maybe you should consider a school that doesn't just pay lip service to a bunch of words printed on their admissions booklets.

Well it sounds like you got what you wanted. To score higher than your classmates under a fair system. So........how about an attitude change or post elsewhere.

If they acknowledged the problem now 'officially' when they hadnt done so before, I expect that would mean that it will now be addressed. So by the time we get there, it wont be a problem any longer.

So I just scrolled back to a topic that was discussed a month ago too, and I would like to know if anyone found out if we can embroider our coats. 🙂

I sure hope so. I was a bit pissed off when I heard about the "cheating." I don't see it as resourcefulness, but as something that is unethical. Many of us are striving very hard to actually study and learn the material and we should not be punished through class rank, grades, and GPA, by those who peek in at what they shouldn't. We should be on the same playing field. It's unethical when some students get to look at the other team's plays before the start of each game, so to speak.

Anyway, I wish your class the best and hope that some of the issues which impacted my class are going to be resolved for you guys. 🙂

Talk to, or email, LeAnn. I get the feel that the school likes to have a pretty uniform look, so I'd talk to her first before doing any embroidering.

Spiced,

I got a good chuckle out of that. The professors were pretty funny. It also reminded me of how NICE your cafeteria ladies were. I really liked them, they were so sweet. I'll probably end up hanging out with them everyday. 😀

i have a stupid (?) question about the matriculation fee on march 15. what exactly is this paying for? is it just securing a seat in the class? i am 95% sure that i'll be attending kcumb, but not 100% sure. i'm risking the $2000, but i want to make sure that the matriculation fee isn't "locking me in" to kcumb. does this even make sense?

i just want to be sure that if i pay the matriculation fee and don't end up attending, that i'm not doing something that's going to get me in trouble with the university.

I think that's a good question, I'm in the same boat and I'd like to know too.

if you were leaving the school for another school, what trouble can you possibly get in with the school youre leaving? since you know, you are leaving them lol.

The $2k just says you want the seat. If you leave, they're keeping you're $2k... so it really doesn't matter. I don't think it becomes and issue until after June when you can only hold one acceptance. I'm pretty sure that's how it works... unless someone wants to correct me.

Interesting video there, Spice. Good for a laugh!

i don't know, that's why it was possibly a stupid question. the only thing i could think of is money trouble.

so sometime in june is the date that you can only one acceptance? can anyone else confirm this or provide any extra details? i know for the m.d. programs that date is may 15.

thanks for all the responses. and it's good to know i'm not the only one putting $2000 on the line.

look at it this way.. $2000 is a lot of money... but $200k is a lot more; in the grand scheme of things, what youre paying to ENSURE you are going to medical school is not that much. The price is worth the admission.

this is my philosophy as well. i just wanted to make sure that i knew what i was getting into by paying the matriculation fee, and not doing anything "wrong" by possibly not attending once i paid it.

on a related topic, does anyone have any input as to the serious cost of attending kcumb? the tuition is close to double that of both my instate schools (one MD and one DO). i've been an undergrad for a long time now, and the thought of going through the application process another year just kills me. at the same time, money is a consideration. i'm confident that another year of applying would certainly get me into either one of my state schools, thus cutting the cost of my medical education almost in half. i've gotten quite a bit of pressure from several people telling me that i should wait a year and apply again in-state to keep the cost down.

that being said... how are you guys planning on paying for kcumb, assuming you get in and attend there? i'm completely open to loan repayment programs of many kinds (except the military, probably). any experience with anything like this? in addition, i'm married and my wife will be working while i'm in school, which will keep loans down.

i really enjoyed kcumb when i was there, and it really seems like a great school and a great fit for me. i've honestly heard almost nothing but great things about it. for anyone on this thread who is a current student, what do you feel like you're paying "extra" for? anyone with regrets about attending such as expensive school?

any input is appreciated. i know you guys will be helpful, as always!

Ok, check this out... when you get accepted to medical school, you go. You don't wait another year. I'm not trying to be harsh or anything, but I've been trying for 6 years. If you include the the first four years of undergrad, that's 10 years of work. I was thankful for every acceptance letter that came in this year (both allopathic and osteopathic) and said, "Hey, I'm not passing this up no matter what the cost." So if you get accepted, know that this is your time. As far as cost goes, believe me, I understand $200K is a lot. But there are so many programs out there to help you while in school and loan repayment programs afterwards that don't require military enlistment. If you are smart about things, you will get all your debt paid in a timely fashion. I've had to let that worry go, cause I'll tell ya it's been weighing on me for awhile. But the money will be there to pay for school and the money will be there to pay for the debt. So if this is really what you want to do, don't pass on the opportunity to get in now. 👍

I am applying for the Kansas Resident Osteopathic program. 15K scholarship/year, and a rural program 25K/Year which requires that I practice in any of the states counties except the 5 largest for four years. Small price to pay for basically free education. Plus Im a small town kansas kid, so thats my story.

Yeah, that's probably the route that I'm gonna go. There are a few hospitals in Louisiana that I worked at that will pay for your medical education as long as you come work for them for a few years. I'd do something like that if they let me do a fellowship after a med-peds residency before showing up at their doorstep... otherwise I'd have to find another program... and if you really have a "rural" or "medically under served" focus, then there are a million and two programs out there to get your student loans paid. Point is , depending on what your focus is, you can get your stuff paid for you or you'll be making beaucoup bucks working on the stars so that you'll be able to take care of it yourself. I've never used that smiley before...

Hey did you email about the embroidory thing. I think itd be freakin awesome if we would just get like DiverDoc
KCUMB 2012

Anyways, after I shut my computer down last night a thought popped into my head. When I was on my open house tour, one of the students who was in the surgery club. ( when you are in this club you get like a 4X3 patch with KCUMBs symbol thing) and he had his grandma sew it on his white coat. So if he can do that, why shouldnt we be able to put our name and school we represent?👍

I was kind of half way kidding about all that. For the most part, I brought it up as a sarcastic response the fact that a negative post that was ended nearly a month ago resurfaced a few days ago. But after thinking about it here today, yeah it would be nice. I need a nickname or something. I thought about going with Dr. T (for my first name) or Alex the Great (that one sounded a little pretenious). Maybe "Notorious T"? Wait, we're suppose to be professional...

I think I may have gotten through that one without a missspelling. Doh!!! :meanie:

Yes, you bet KCUMB takes professionalism seriously and image is part of it. Exercise caution and care when choosing to navigate beyond the somewhat narrow parameters set forth. There's probably enough room for what you want to do, but there's also a pretty narrow therapeutic index, so to speak.

Hey, if you want that embroidery thing, good for you. Call up Student Affairs and make a proposal. See what they say.

And now for something a little lighter (from KCUMB Follies, 2008):

hahaha, oh my goodness, thank you for posting this! 😀

It feels like forever since I was last on campus and I'm getting a little homesick. I loved watching the cafeteria crew rocking!

(btw, the culprit that got busted for surfing facebook on her iPhone? That is going to be your microbiology instructor and she is EXCELLENT.)

Hi y'all. I am not sure what to wear for my interview at KCUMB. I thought I read somewhere on here that KCUMB values professionalism? Would anyone recommend wearing a suit? And should I bring a resume? Thanks for any help....this is my first, and perhaps only, interview!

Wearing a suit would be fine. It is practically the uniform for interviewees. I can point out who they are as they pass me on campus, because they are the ones with the blue or black suits. Anyway, there's some room for expression (meaning it doesn't have to be a black-colored suit), but definitely stick to the more traditional side of things.

There's no need to bring a resume or CV. It's an open file interview, 2 on 1. This means they have already read your file and it is in front of them (or they have made notes from your file). I brought a small portfolio so that I could jot down some notes (a lot of good info on what they want to hear is given prior to the interviews; pay attention), but this isn't necessary. Relax and be yourself. Good luck!

Oh yeah, make sure to brush up on the hx and principles of osteopathic medicine. 👍

Thanks, Spicedmanna!

I am going to buy a suit today. Never needed one until now.

Another question about comething in your response: The interview is 2 on 1.....two interviewers or two interviewees? I've been going through all the student evaluations of KCUMB interviews and many people had 1 on 1 interviews....is this different for me since it's so late in the game? Also, Some of those e-valuations said that interviewees had between an 80 and 90 percent accepetance rate.....would this be different for those of us interviewing so late?

Thanks again for your help. Since you are a student at KCUMB, I very much value your opinion and advice. I would be thrilled to attend your school this fall!

In general, I'd expect two interviewers to one interviewee. To my knowledge, that's how I've seen it traditionally done, unless something has changed. You are in the room/office with two interviewers and generally they tag team in interviewing you.

In terms of lateness, I wouldn't worry about it. I interviewed around March, too, and I got accepted. 🙂

Generally, when KCUMB invites for an interview, there is a good chance you will be accepted (they even take your measurements for your whitecoat during your interview day). They choose carefully who they want to interview. Just relax and be yourself... They want to know who you are beyond the numbers.

No problem. Good luck with everything!

i know people have already asked questions along these lines, but i thought i'd go ahead and post my own versions of similar questions.

1) does anybody know of some good resources for finding a rental house in k.c. (internet sites, SDN threads, etc). there are plenty of apartment resources, but with a spouse and a 3 pets 🙂eek🙂 we're thinking a rental house would be more appropriate. what areas of k.c. are the best when searching for housing (most websites that search for rental houses split the city up into many areas). we're looking for something in a nice-ish area, but affordable. it seems like we'd like to stay below $1000/month.

on interview day they gave us a flyer for a woman who does apartment searches (free and personalized!). has anyone used this service? any good? just apartments, or does she do houses as well?

2) this is related to other threads i've read on student loans and fafsa. parental info on the fafsa is said to allow for other scholarships and loans that are not available to you if you don't include parental info. i've already submitted my fafsa without parental info because my parents won't have their taxes done until april. for any current kcumb students, how big of an issue is this, considering the high cost of tuition? is the standard amount of loans going to be enough? am i screwed without putting the parental info on the fafsa?

i certainly plan on calling school to get some extra details on this, but i consider you guys to be the best resource by far! 👍

i just got an email from that michelle girl who said she would work with u to find housing.. i dont wanna post here info here, but if you didnt get the email from her PM me and ill forward it to you

I was wondering if any current student could shed some light on how easy it was to find insurance. I read on a different thread that you have to find your own at KCUMB. I have always been on policies that would take you no matter what and am scared I won't be accepted due to a health problem I had about 4 years ago which won't be in the clear for another year. I don't take any medications but ended up going to the doctor a lot last year for some minor procedures and other mundane stuff. Will this hurt me in finding cheap insurance for me and my kids? Thanks for any help. I really appreciate it.

I would like to know this too. I will also be looking for a house and would like to start soon. I got the e-mail from Michelle but she only mentioned apts so I assumed she didn't do houses. Thanks for any help.

made the jump from "qualified status" to interview invite? i've updated them several times....but i'm stuck. suggestions? tips?

thanks. 🙄

So I was complete back in November, but they were waiting for my updated MCAT. I was placed in the "qualified" group then. I got a 20 last fall and retook it in January. I made a 25 this time. I have a 3.61 overall and 3.52 science. I called the week I faxed things to make sure they received the new score. They have the new score, but not my updated transcript. I resent my transcript to them.

I was just curious to see if they are still sending out interview invites. Does anyone know when the last interview day is? Also, is the invite by mail, email, or phone? I'm back home for spring break and someone is checking my mail. I would really hate for my friend to read to me a rejection letter over the phone. Any input would be great. Thanks!

Axebjc, I am not sure when the last interviews will be. I do know for a fact that ALL schools call people with an offer right up to the first days of classes in August. For my interview at KCUMB, it was offered via email. Acceptance notification via snail mail. :luck:

I got my interview invite by the good ol' USPS back in August. They are probably doing it by email now to cut down on the time. I imagine the last day they interview will be sometime in April. So there's still time. Keep at it. Bonne chance, mon ami!

Just thought I would let you know KCUMB is interviewing in April. I just got an email inviting me to an interview on April 14th!!! WOOHOO! This is my 2nd interview invite.

clearly they read your sdn post yesterday, and then BOOM, invite.

congrats, best of luck, any questions you got u can def ask here, a lot of us have already sent in our deposits to kcumb

Thanks PokerDoc!!! I plan on reading the old posts before I ask questions. I don't want to ask things that have already been answered.

I'm from Texas and it is only an 8 hour drive from here. I think my parents and I are going to drive up on Saturday rather than paying for a flight out there. My parents obviously won't be going to the interview. That's ok that I drive up with my parents right? They will probably drive around the town to check things out while I'm on campus.

I was done with my application and secondary August/September last year (7-8 months ago)...I just got an interview invite today (March 13, 2008)...I've interviewed at 6 other schools in a timely manner...I'm just curious what the admissions committee at KCUMB is smoking (it must be good stuff - white widow, haze, or maybe they've made a trip to Cali and picked up some of that Skunk)...it really seems to have impaired their time perception, and I can't take them serriously...and, my favorite part is going to be turning down their interview invite 😀.

I don't mean to come across as sounding rude, but I just don't understand why they would keep someone waiting that long with absolutely no update...no wait-list...no rejection...nothing.

Good luck to those of you who have will be attending KCUMB!

there is a coffee talk hour before the actual interview that parents are welcome to attend. If youre parents are going to drive up with you you should do that.

Well if you have an acceptance to another school, then you shouldn't be too worried about it. If you don't have one, what's your beef? With a few thousand applicants, it can become easy to "lose" a few people here and there. I hope some other school met your expectations...

Axebjc,
Congrats on the invite. Be cool cause it's a real easy day. Everyone is real relaxed. The atmosphere is great. Be yourself and things should go well. Where in TX are you? It was a 13 hour drive from San Antonio. Also, I would worry about asking repeat questions. I've asked like 20 of them and Spice hasn't booted me yet. Maybe I haven't hit that threshold yet... I'll have to get an update on the rules some time in the future.

Hey guys! I guess that not too many people who had received rejection letters would still comb through this thread, however I'm hoping someone will see it and be curious... is there anyone out there who interviewed at KCUMB and DIDN'T get accepted? I've read on here and heard from students at KCUMB that somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of interviewees get accepted.

I am my own worst critic but I wasn't very good at reading my interviewers. They were completely friendly and didn't seem skeptical or ill-receptive of me, however the "conversational" interview that many had raved about didn't happen for me. It was more of a polite Q and A session....only remotely conversational when I was asked the question "Do you have any questions for us?" which felt like it happened after only 15 minutes into the interview (I would consider this kind of question a wrap-up question).

I am now nervous that I asked too many questions, or didn't show enough interest in osteopathic medicine specifically. My interview lasted about 45 minutes, but that's because I ALWAYS have questions....good questions, I hope.....

Anyone have a similar experience....when you interviewed how did you think it went? If you interviewed at KCUMB and didn't get accepted, were you expecting this? I think this school is fantastic, and I am now nervous that I didn't make the impression that I wanted to. Advice requested😕

i didnt get asked any hard questions, it was jut aback and forward conversation like yours. we talked about animals, sports and some of my extracurriculars, that was it.
