I'm having the toughest time deciding between these two schools, they seem really similar to me. I could go on for a while debating pros and cons, but they seem like two similarly ranked schools in reputation. It seems like the biggest difference is obviously location. Anyone have any ideas one way or the other? Thanks in advance for the help guys.

Tough choice either way. The schools are very similar in a ton of ways. What are your goals with medical school???

I'm looking into sports med or oncology right now, and USC looked better for both. I guess that I'm leaning towards USC but all of my profs, friends, etc. have mainly been telling me sinai for the rep and the location.

USC was ranked 43 three years ago and now we are ranked 32nd. Mount Sinai was ranked 23 three years ago and now is ranked 29th. I'm not sure I would say that Mount Sinai has a better reputation than USC does right now.

As far as location, Mount Sinai's location in New York is absolutely amazing. Right on the upper east side next to Central park. Can't really beat that.

But I honestly believe that USC is a much better school. We just redid our curriculum, with the first class to go through it having the highest board scores in our history (And their MCAT and GPA won't nearly be as high as your class's is) We are opening a brand new hospital soon. one research building just opened, and another is just being built. USC is on it's way up. I can't say the same for Mount Sinai. I don't know much about the information, but I know they have been having tons of financial problems the last couple of years.

PS Which school do you go to??

I would say MSSM has a better national reputation than USC. Both are great schools though. I'd pick USC simply b/c I love CA! Dont pay attention to the rankings, they'll drive you insane. you cant really conclude anything from the movements of various schools over a span of a few years anyway.

Rep matters if you're choosing b/w, say, UCSF and USC. But with MSSM and USC, there's hardly a difference (except regional favoritism, which is to be expected). Sure, I was told to go to Case, Northwestern, or Pitt over USC, but I chose USC for my own reasons. I'm glad I stuck to my guns instead of bowing to the pressure from my advisor/profs.

I wouldve done the exact same thing.

I'd say, make your decision based on where you want to do your residency and eventually settle down.

yea, I'm from hawaii and I go to school at Pomona in SoCal, and its probably where I want end up for residency. Thanks for all the advice guys, I was thinking pretty much what you guys were all thinking but it nice to hear some confirmation from sdners! =P

Looks like I'll be a trojan next year, even though they beat my team UMich in the Rose bowl!!

That makes no sense. You should've been a trojan fan all along.

blue is my favorite color, and I hate red =P

Plus, my dad sat me down one saturday morning when I was around 5 and I saw UMich's football helmets. I was sold for life. Can you guess what my top choice still is?

And no one better say OSU =P

Can't spell suck w/o USC. Go Bruins!!!

I say withdraw from MSSM so I can get off the waitlist.
