Keeping steadfast in school while not burning out.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So how do you folks keep at your peak performance all year long without burning out. Any suggestions for us folks here on SDN?

Umm what I have learned is that 90% of burn out is in your head!
Do not think you can burn out, but at the same time respect your self.

or..

Don't bite off more than you can chew, and thething that keeps me going full throttle is knowing that someone else is alwys working harder than I am with out burning out, if they can do it, why cant I?

Good luck!

1.exercise regularly

2. know your optimal focus time - i.e. certain individuals can only stay focused for a 1-3 hour length, don't be over ambitious and say you're going to study all day.
1-3 hours of focus active studying > all day mediocre studying

3. find a good de-stresser

4. enjoy college, do things, experience life.

5. find a friend that motivates you, then motivate each other. succeed together.

it sucks, but you will most likely figure out college around junior year. some are luckier and figure it out early, some never get it at all.

if i could go back and redo years 1 and 2, i'd work less hard. i actually think i would've done better or at least the same. basically, take it easy. dont bite more than you can take. relax. it should be 4 of the greatest years of your life.

If you could stay at "peak" performance, it wouldn't be peak performance anymore. It would just be normal performance.

How not to burn out? Do other things that you enjoy outside of school. Video games, volunteering, TV, whatever.

It's all about prioritizing.

Figure out how much work you need to put in for your classes. Do that.

Figure out how much volunteering/research/work/whatever you can handle that semester. Do that.

If you have room for other things you enjoy like performing or clubs or intramurals or whatever, go for it.

But at the end of the day, make sure you spend time with the people who are important to you. I know there were times in college when my friends didn't see much of me, but I knew if I didn't see them at all, I would go nuts.

Basically, don't sacrifice people for school. Remember, people are the whole reason we're going into medicine.
