Hello,
In the boards part 1 exam, will there be access to
1. normal lab values [ESR, PT, aPTT, AFP, ALT, AST, CRP etc ]?
2. normal values for distal latencies and the distance they would have used to measure the distal latencies and velocity?

or do we have to remember them?

Thanks,

In general, lab normals are laboratory-specific. Your hospital's normals may not be the same as mine.

Any lab value without normals would be useless.

They could potentially ask you for ESR allowance for age in males vs females. If they had asked me about ALT I would have asked for lab normals. They could ask about things such as % of normal for deciding on toxic vs infectious hepatitis, such as a pt on Dantrolene.

INR is about the only thing that is universal, hence it's name.

If we have to know normal values for AFP, I give up right now...

Hello,
Thanks topwise and PMR4MSK for your inputs.
But my question is, when somebody takes the ABPMMR boards
part 1 exam in the next 4 days.Do they have to remember all the
relevant lab values [like ESR, PT, aPTT, CK, AFP, ALT, AST, CRP etc]? or will they have a link through which one can access the table of normal values while taking the test?
Does the same apply to electrodiagnostic values [distal latencies, distance
used in conduction studies etc?

Thanks

i think your question was already answered, and quite well, i might add.

but it seems like you may need a little more direction here: dont memorize the normal lab values you mentioned. spend your time studying other things -- like O and P. for some reason, they always love O and P

If lab values are given, they will most likely list normals. I would not sutdy/memorize these unless you have nothing else to do.

Don't waste your time studying lab values.

Literally, there is so much random stuff on the written boards, that normal lab values are the least of your worries.
