If one is attending a school that gives an IPad to each incoming student how does that impact the laptop they should get?
Should they stay compatible and go with a Mac and can they go Windows?
If Yes for a Mac is the focus of portability with the MacBook Air that significant if already have the IPad?
it's all down to personal preference. iPad works just as well on the windows as it does on a Mac. I would definitely recommend to still get a full featured laptop or desktop PC because there will inevitably be things that require real computers. Things tend to be more compatible with windows, but macs can always bootcamp. For what it's worth, something like 90% of my classmates use either MacBook Pro or air.

Not what you asked but I was just reading something on this: if your school requires you to get a laptop, you can deduct the full cost of it on your taxes (just make sure you can prove you bought it and that it is required). When I read that I decided I might as well splurge and get a good one, when I do get in.

Oh, wow. Did not know about this at all.

sadly for the amount that most of us earn just prior to med school, the cost of deducting the laptop wouldn't be enough to overtake the automatic deductible.

don't knock it till you try it. I use both platforms for pretty high end computing stuff at home and can honestly say I prefer the mac for most things.
I used to have a Mac but I'm just a PC person at heart, can't help it. I honestly love Windows 8.

really? i hateee windows 8, without a touchscreen it honestly feels like a worse UI experience than 7. I can see how it would be pretty good with one though.
Yeah, you seriously need the touchscreen with 8. It doesn't make sense without it.
I haven't tried a Macbook yet, but I feel like I'm so used to Windows that it'd be hard for me to adjust.
Adjusting is weird, but the learning curve isn't too bad. I will admit that Macs have some really cool features. I miss the trackpad gestures the most.

I would rather have a tablet and a PC at home than a laptop, but that's just me. Go with Asus or Lenovo unless you want to overpay for Apple.
