I can't seem to grasp the fact, that for many schools like BU and NY, that there are over 3000 applicant, while only less that 200 seats. While the gpa of the class is under 3.4.
Is this because of the large number of under 3.0's trying to get in, or the vigour competitive on dental school interviews

In my opinion and from what I see in real life, people with lower gpa's are more socially adept because grades and social life are balanced. While most people with really high GPAs have that high of GPA because all they do is.... study and have no social skills whatsoever. I'm sure it occurs the other way around also, but probably not to the same extent.

there're a lot of factors and those 2 might be part of it

a huge number of ppl include a nyu app because of its reputation, and then not attend if they get into more competitive/cheaper state schools, reinforcing both the high number of applicants and low avgs

it's also a school that likes high dats more than high gpas judging off of the lists that are floating around

then you have to factor in some really low gpa urms skewing the avgs

and they get about 5000 applicants

edit:

but i think where you're getting at is how secure you can feel about yourself if you have ~entrance gpa of the school, then you oughta be confident that you met one of the bigger hurdles, but yea, they do look at other things and can reject you for them

There is no mystery here. There is a good chance that the DAT and gpa distribution of the 4842 applicants that applied to NYU follows closely the National distribution. Of the total applicant pool of 12210, 43.2% (5274) have an overall gpa and 30% (3663) have a science gpa above 3.5. Out of this group, 72% gain acceptance. Moreover, not everyone wants to go NYU.

Pricier school = lower average GPA's

The people with high GPA's tend to be accepted at a cheaper school or choose their state school. They have more options on where they can go. People with lower GPAs are generally stuck with the more expensive options.

^ or if you are Canadian/international students, then you are pretty much stuck with those pricey schools
