late applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied in January last cycle and only submitted my MCAT in June. Got accepted to Kent and had interview invites to Temple and Western. And my grades/scores didn't transcend space, time and matter either. Anything after March-ish is a gamble, imho.

On the website, it said that "priority" apps are due before April 1st.
Going by that, I do think that March is still very iffy, but it pains me to say that the earliest MCAT date is 1/24. I'm crossing my fingers for them to release scores earlier than a month because there are no more writing portion.

but out of curiosity ManUnderFire, what was your GPA?

I mentioned it in another thread, but my scores are nothing to write home about:

cGPA: 2.87
sGPA: 2.79
postbacc: 3.53 (90 credits)
master's: 3.78
MCAT: 25-O (retake from 28R 3+ yrs ago)

My first degree was finished in 2005. Since then I've been a good boy 😀

Like I said, I was only complete in June and still got 3 interviews. But it seems that smaller schools like DMU and AZPOD fill most of their seats early in the cycle (from what I gather on SDN).

But don't worry though, really. It won't change a thing. Larger class size schools like Scholl, NYCPM, Kent or even Barry are still itching to fill their quota.

Where did you go for your post bacc/master's? If you don't me asking.

I'm north of the border...McGill University in Montreal

I think the post bacc program was def a HUGE PLUS to your app. 👍

I'm hoping Barry or Kent or Samuel Merritt will have spots open. I'd be happy with any of those places.

I think you will be ok. My application was released 1/12 and I got interview invites from Kent and NYCPM on 1/14. Today I also got an invite from DMU. Good luck to you.

Did they offer you interviews before the MCAT score?

I'm also a late applicant... I plan on submitting in January. I realize its definitely a bit of a gamble (especially for the schools with small class sizes) but it doesn't hurt to try I guess.

Quick question to any of you guys:

I took the MCAT January of last year but got a really bad score (18S).... So I'm retaking next weekend. Do I have to wait until my new score comes out in Feb 2013 in order to officially submit my application? Then my application won't be verified until end of March, which is a big issue.... Since I have a MCAT score (even though it's really low), is there a way to submit my app but let the schools know that I retook it and update it at a later date? Or if I tell them I am doing a retake, will AACPMAS not let me submit my app?

Thanks in advance!

I don't think you need to wait. I believe you can update your MCAT and if AACPMAS won't let you update it then you can let the schools know individually you have a new score coming.

I am planning on applying within the next few weeks here, I have everything but my LOR's finished. I have been told I should apply and try to schedule interviews after I have them in, is this a good idea or am I shooting myself in the leg?

im in the same boat. I just recently submitted my app and it will be mailed out, and hopefully my LORs will come before interviews. I know Scholl wants the letters before interviewing, but the majority will interview, and some even accept without them, so I'm hoping it's all good.

To paint a clearer picture, here my time line of events when I was applying back in the fall:

Mid Aug: Sent AACPMAS all my transcripts and MCAT scores, and completed my online application; DID NOT submit application (wanted to shadow more to make sure I wanted to become a podiatrist)

Sept. 12: Finally submitted application, had not even talked to professors about LORs yet

Sept. 14: received interview invite from Kent, scheduled it in November (Give myself 2 months to get LORs and shadow more before interview)

Approx.Nov 12: Kent finally receives my final LOR from my adviser

Nov 19: Interview

Nov 21: Accepted

SRM, my earlier recommendation was based on the fact you have already taken the MCAT and have a fairly competitive score and GPA. Following the time line posted above could help you secure an interview in April (or whenever you want to schedule it) right now, instead of waiting until April to even have schools start looking at you when spots might be limited due to the fact it would be late in the cycle.

My previous experience has shown that you can send your LORs after you've received and invite, and can do so up to at least a week before your interview, with no negative consequence. I'm not sure if I am the exception or the rule, but at least you know you will not be shooting yourself in the leg if you apply now. I'm giving you this information to help you have the best chance to go to the school you want to attend, but by no means do I want to force you do to something you are uncomfortable with. Good luck applying!

For those who are worry warts (like myself), I called a few schools today, and they said that in the past they have held interviews in May/June.

There's hope!!
YAY!!

First off, who is wart? Maybe I am new to some of the online lingo.

Second, I feel as if you are waiting till May or June to apply to Podiatry school that begins in just a few months from then. Because at least I remember for DO school at MSU, my cousin's white coat ceremony was on June 15, 2012. So I bet Podiatry schools have it near the same time as well.
But according to the Kent State site their White Coat Ceremony wasn't until August 5th.

But in my mind if you waited all the way until May or June to finally apply for Podiatry School there is probably one logical explanation: You just recently got declined from your final medical school of choice

Why would you wait 7+ months after the first application date to just now apply? MCAT could be a reasonable explanation, but if that is not your explanation then I do believe the only reason is you got declined from every MD, DO, or PA school you applied to

Who cares what their reason is get off your high horse we all have out reasons so offer feedback that's useful.

Am I be only one who can't determine if that wart comment was or joke or not. If you don't know what a wart is then podiatry may not be for you.

Oh, a wart!!! Ok, gotcha. Well I know what a wart is but I didn't see the word "worry" in front of it. I have never heard someone call someone a wart which is what I was getting at. And as you can see from my comment I didn't say "what is A wart" I said "Who is wart?"

Personally, I thought my feedback was good. Sometimes it is best to give critical responses as well as nice gestures. What I am trying to get at is that if someone is waiting until MAY to apply for Podiatry school they will have a damn hard time. I am basing this more off the people I know who apply to medical schools and PA schools more than DPM schools since I don't know people who actually go into podiatry from my college.

Seemed like the kid got enough good answers already so I just gave my 2 cents about why waiting until May would sound like a bad idea.

I'm waiting for my MCAT score .. What a grueling month 🙁

good to see there are other late applicants 🙂

update: received a few interviews!
updated update: LORs won't be sent in time for the first interview. We'll see how that goes.

Congrats! Where r u interviewing? We might run into one another!

DAMN!!!! You must have had an exciting week. I think just on Monday you said you hadn't even gotten any interview offers from either school and now you got 4 already. CONGRATS MAN!!!! That is a busy schedule, three interviews in three different states in just 6 days.

Didn't really wanna mention that part. At least the good thing about the NY and Temple back to back is no need to get a plane (I assume) from NY to Pennsylvania.
