**Late Night Thread**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haven't been too active in here due to AZCOM but I interviewed and got accepted yesterday!!!

Ok... Sports: Did muay thai for like 6 months, loved every minute of it. Really got me in shape from like 195 -> 185ish: Target weight was 185. Stopped due to time constrait, money issues, and the gym closed down anyway lol. It's something that I'd love to get back into. Also love snowboarding, been going for the last 5-6 seasons and traveled to Utah (13 hours drive), Tahoe (9 hours) and Mammoth (6 hours) just to check out different slopes. Do motorsports count? Love my motorcycle.

My Fast Food place of choice: Carl's Jr. I just love their basic Famous Star. So much for so little.

Also, all your teams are going down. Phillip Rivers gonna lead the Chargers to the Super Bowl this year. 4-1 with a bye last week. GOOOOOOO BOLTS!

Ha! Rivers won't even get the Chargers to win their division....Carson Palmer is with the Raiders now!

Ooohhh them be fightin words my friend.

Raiders gonna get crushed! .... or electrified, or whatever we Chargers do to other, lesser teams.

🙄 Oh, snap!

*grabs popcorn*

Lol. I confess, I am a bandwagon hometeam fan. I only root for the Chargers because I've lived here for 95% of my life. I don't even know who Carson Palmer is, nor what he is capable of.

Vegas bound tomorrow... hopefully will take my mind from waiting for Texas pre-match.

In my circle, we're convinced that the player known as Phillip Rivers is actually played by two similar people wearing the same number. One is Phillip Rivers, confident in the pocket, razor-sharp aim, and a force to be reckoned with. The other one, who sneaks on when no one's looking, is "Phillipe" Cry Me A River. Phillipe drops the ball, runs like a girl, and generally is 100% weaksauce. They're really sneaky, you can never tell which one is playing any single play until, well, you see it.

Do the free spin outside Planet Hollywood. The money you win there can last you a while inside.

Lol, I think it might be kind of a turn-off if I tell them that, let them dream haha. I looked at the St. Matthews website, you're right!
BTW, Doc I really enjoyed all your previous articles on the risks of Carribean med schools vs DO, not only were they informative but you had the logic and stats to back em up! The only reason I get the Ross invites was because I started applying there just in case I didn't get into my DO schools, but once interviews came around, I stopped my application. But God, they won't leave me alone, I literally get 6 emails from them a day, plus they've called me a few times.

Hey Iliketoytles, I'm actually from Houston lol. I went to college in Boston but I grew up in H-town. I also work at the Museum of Natural Science!! What part of town are you from?

Do you have the links to those articles? Thanks.

I didn't even watch hangover 3 yet, and I guess now I won't have to.

Haha. Congrats on your 2,000th post. 🙂

I haven't slept all night for some reason. my flight is in 6 hours. Gonna take a power nap. POWAAHH

Thanks, it was a long time coming. Lots of hard work was put into it.

I posted so early cuz I was just getting off a 5pm-1am shift, and of course, went into overtime.

its after midnight where i am and no posts on the late night thread! Is anyone watching the world series? im still mourning the terrible performance of the braves...

Can't believe the Rangers lost... it was a good game though.

I'm usually awake at this time, but my flight back home is super early so I need to get some sleep. UGHHNNN.

I really need to start getting better sleep, but I'm hesitant to take sleeping pills. I hear melatonin pills are less strong than sleeping pills, but since it's a naturally occurring chemical in the body, I'd like to try it first. Has anyone tried melatonin pills?

Omg I just saw Phil Jackson in an Audi commercial. How awesome!

Sorry for being a little off topic, but I was looking at some Ross U youtube videos (NO intention of going, just curious), and I have to say.... They have some intensely hot Indian girls (I'm of South Asian descent), maybe I need to reconsider DO vs FMG 😀

Just celebrated the end of my application cycle by going to the Night Ranger, Foreigner, and Journey concert with my fiance. Amazing night!

I play football, lacrosse, and golf btw

What do you do for work, LPB?

Not trying to insult the students at Ross, but do you really want to go out with students who go there? These are the students who said "I want to, like... be a doctor to like... help people." Just kidding, but you get my drift.

I don't care how good looking they are rafman, personality and intelligence count for something as well! 😉

All joking aside... , I know a couple good looking south asian peeps at Ross right now. And I also know their academic performance in college was dismal at best. They say you have to be a hard worker to get into medical school, but if you have connections and are willing to go anywhere for it (including overseas), then there's always a medical school you can get into. Scary thought! :scared:

Well, I would tend to agree and disagree. A lot of Canadians go to the Caribbean because they are not aware of the DO option. Some schools in Ontario place hard MCAT cutoffs like an 11 in verbal. You could have a 33 MCAT but if you got a 10 in verbal, you are auto screened. You never know a person's situation. I didn't get accepted to a Canadian dental school with basically all A's my final 3 years of undergrad, so I went to the US. Does that mean I was not qualified to be a Canadian dental student or US schools have lower standards? I doubt it since I'm licensed in the US and Canada and have practiced in both countries (in good standing for 10 years.)

I was worried after posting that I gave the wrong impression of what I meant lol. I meant to say that the south Asians I know who went to the carribbean are all pretty but are underachievers academically. I know this because I was in their classes and they didn't give a flying fudge about their grades. That, combined with the cultural pressure to become a doctor for the sake of being a doctor equals them being content with Carib schools simply because they were not willing to put forth an effort and don't appreciate their parents money.

I didn't mean to extrapolate to all Carib students. My bad if it came out that way. :/

I definitely get what Iliketoytles is trying to say. Usually, most of the success stories from Ross and SGU tend to be the Canadian students who didn't want to go (or couldn't get into) the DO route. Most of the South Asians I know ( I personally know four, 3 girls and 1 guy) went to an American undergraduate school, and as Iliketoytles said did horrible in their undergrad (either through too much partying or they just dont have the mental discipline). I really do hope the best for them and maybe it will work out for them, but the only reason they are there is because they're parents are loaded and they pretty much forced them to go because they didn't get into US MD schools. This is my own personal experience, so please take it with a grain of salt lol

I am currently writing this in Grenada and I agree with Ilikytoytles. There are many south asians here, like alot. I have become friends with some of them and they are great people but I can agree with what the last few posts are saying. There is a joke around here saying the white coat ceremony is called the "march of the patels." I say that in the most non-culturally insensitive way possible. But I am trying to leave (hints the name) to go the DO route.

Good luck on your journey trying to escape the dark side!

LOL! Omg that's too funny... 😆

I agree. some desi people just dont get that the D.O. option is way better than going to the caribbean and becoming an IMG. They just look at the initials behind the name

Seriously, I'm telling you, it's the rich desi parents who send their kids down there. In college, I knew an indian guy, pretty cool, but he was crazy in terms of partying and goofing off. He got in trouble with the dean a couple of times as well. But, both his parents were doctors (they owned a HUGE clinic in Miami). I mean, it was comparable to Kelsey Seybold in Texas. So, the parents "swayed" the dean not to have his infarction placed in the permanent records. He somehow graduated and now he'll be attending SGU in August 2012. So they're you have it.... a happy ending :smack:

So do you guys/girls seriously not sleep that much? I seriously don't sleep for more than 3 hours at a time -- that's why I am usually heading to the gym for 5 am.

3 hours is all I need to be functional. Sometimes I get about 2 hours, sometimes 4.

Do you take a nap during the day? I wish I could function consistently with 3 hours of sleep a night. I do so every now and then, but it does catch up with me after a couple days. I remember in my psych 101 class, we saw a documentary about people that sleep for 2 hours or less a night. Really cool.

Not really, but every so often I will sleep a good nights sleep. My work hours actually permit me to sleep in, if I could.

I'm a non 911 EMT. For any pre-meds reading this thread that are considering being an EMT in Los Angeles county, I advise against it. Overworked, under paid and under appreciated are a few of the polite ways to describe my job. Only thing that helps me through my day is seeing the occasional good looking nurse (GLN.) At least I now appreciate the little things in life.

I work in the ED as a scribe, so I feel you on the overworked/underpaid front. Are you an EMT-B, or higher?

Yeah, my friend is working all types of odd hours 7 days a week as a scribe. He wants to be a PA though. I'm just a basic. Do you have an emt cert as well?

I don't, but I would if I could swing the time. From what I've seen, sadly, whenever something cool happens the medics jump on it right away and leave the EMT's to do the scut work. Such is life at the bottom of the totem, eh?

Granny Transport BLS 4 lyfe.

I have an EMT-B cert but never got a job with it. San Diego area is highly competitive for $9-11/hr job market. Crazy eh?! Damn wanna-be firefighters 😀

you guys are all rookies. 32 straight hours awake. 11pm to 11am ER shift. Went off to a NY medical society meeting from 1-4. Ate drive through food for dinner and studied in my car. 7pm to 7am shift. I'm calling it a night now.

I will admit that I intend to sleep for 12+ hours right now and I frequently get a good 9 or 10 hours of sleep on my emergency med rotation... but med students can have some *tough* hours now and again.

To be fair, the last person I talked to on my way out was a surgical resident who had me beat. He was on his 26th straight hour and expected to get out by his 28th straight hour, but first he wanted to do an appendectomy. Except I gave the patient oral contrast for a CT... so the CT cant even happen for 2 more hours.... an the resident still wants to do the appy after the CT. So he is *willingly* staying later, past 28 straight hours, to pull out an inflamed vestigal organ.

Classic "One Upper" 😉

1) Jets > Chargers. (Although, we'll probably lose lol, but I feel like I have to be obstinately confident in my team)

2) I'm writing this from the EMT-B building, and I have to say, we don't really do a whole lot of scut work. Granted there is always some, especially with geriatrics, but just last night, we responded to a suicide by nail-gun. But I guess that depends where you are. (I'm in NJ)

3) I'm a brown guy who's not at all attracted to brown girls. Go figure. Hence, anytime I see what would be a pretty indian girl all I see is ridiculous amounts of lip gloss and perfume, spoiled brattiness thanks to successful, hard-working parents, and just a general annoying personality. My girlfriend of two and a half years is white, and I wouldn't have it any other way 👍

4) I have no idea how you guys go without sleep for so long! I need my 8 hours a night, I can do with 7 w/coffee, but I have no idea how you do 3 hours. I'm a little jealous, actually, haha.

And: well played, DocEspana. You win.

I'm the jealous one!!

I had a good laugh over the previous some posts. But I would like to say there are exceptions...myself being one.

1. Im desi
2. My parents said get into a D.O school, take as much time as needed but will not let me go to the caribbeans
3. they said I could go be an English major if I want, never forced me to pursue this, it was my own independent decision

So yes, I guess Im lucky in that way? Or different. 😀

oh and that lip gloss comment..haha I dont even own any =)

There are exceptions, but too few and far between. I totally agree what KS said, I'm a desi guy and I've def had MUCH (x10) better experiences dating white girls. Indian girls are too stuck up! But I'm glad exceptions like you exist 👍👍👍

What a great day for college football! #6 Wisconsin was shocked in the last play of the game, and #3 Oklahoma going down on a 39-game home winning streak to Texas Tech! Only poor show were my Broncos, who were supposed to blow past Air Force with a 30-point spread.

Indian girls are too stuck up!

And fake... and arrogant (when they have nothing to back it up)... and self-centered... and whiny... and overly DRAMATIC. It's all that ridiculous bollywood nonsense that they try to take from a TV screen and transfer into everyday life. It's annoying as ****. 😡

I have a couple strange and funny stories of my past dating experience with an indian girl. She was extremely pretty but had the personality of a brick. This one time I was reading this article about stem cell research and she said scientists were a "bunch of boring people who spend their lives stuck in labs because they have no friends" (direct quote btw)... so I said GOODBYE! 😎

so you won't be looking for a girl on shadi.com?? LOL I'm not indian but some of my best friends are.
