It's been about one month since I interviewed at Columbia and yesterday, I just found a sealed thank you note for my interviewer that I still hadn't sent out. I could have sworn I mailed that thing in, but I have hard evidence of the contrary.

So, should I mail the thank you note now--one month out from my interview? I can't decide if a fairly late thank you note is better than no thank you note.

I'm still going to send in a LOI to this place, so it's not like they will receive no post-interview communication from me at all.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

i know there's a whole range of feelings that schools have on whether thank-you notes are appreciated, so there's a very good chance your not sending one could have been dandy with columbia. not sure how that school feels specifically.

i'd go ahead and send it. as well as the LOI. what harm could it do?

I'm no expert on this, but if it is a sincere thank you for your interviewer, then go ahead and send it. It might be late, but your interviewer will appreciate your acknowledgement.

If you're sending it solely to help your application, I think the verdict around here is that thank you letters are unlikely to help you get accepted. That, and if you're not sincere, your motivation for sending the letter is likely to show through.

If it will weigh on your conscience, I would send the LOI right away (Columbia seems to value these), and just spend a few lines thanking your interviewer.

I sent a very short letter a month late. He responded in a couple of hours with an even shorter response.

Is that good or bad?

I have been wondering about that for a week now...the nightmares are starting to get annoying though. I like to think of us (the interviewer and I) as no nonsense kind of guys 🙂

One-up him and send him a one-word reply. He can't beat that unless he's willing to send you a blank correspondence.
