LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

Well, I actually think that he went to jail, so I can't exactly give the school that much credit. FWIW, my neurobio class didn't need to know the cranial nerves either, we learned them in anatomy. We did study the brain though.

My guy went to jail for a night for assault. Got a year suspended.

My question is: Shouldn't schools have a responsibility to tell students that a teacher has a history of assaulting a student?

Hey one more...does that LWR movie theater really serve alcohol...if so, a)awesome, and b) any good?

Yes, it does. More interesting, though, is that directly next to it is a new wine shop/cafe place opening this month supposedly. LWR is kind of a "wine and cheese" type of crowd.

The theatre shows all the major first-run movies, but it also shows aome of the independent and foreign films that you never hear about until Oscar time. If you join the Sarasota Film Society you get discounts on admission and food and drinks in the theatre. It's usually less crowded than the other theatres too, even on opening night. It's brand new, with stadium seating, and incredible sound. Plus, it's nice to just walk around the are and browse the shops. You can eat sushi, or French, or Russian or grab an icecream cone...or just about anything. The only downside is that Morton's closed.

We have the alamo drafthouse theater here in the ATX. Movies + booze + food + sometimes special events, like Lebowski Night, where you get a free white russian and a bowling pass or something.

Yeah, I've been wanting to check out that theater here. Went to one off of Hwy 301, was a fairly new big name one, paid way too much for tickets, and it wasn't really that great.

Plus I've seen some movies in the past where a good drink during it would've made the movie that much better.

We have a theater around here that serves food and alcohol and you're seated at tables, but there is a minimum charge of some amount. I've heard it's nice, but I've never gone.

There's one out here also. We saw the last Star Wars movie there, and ate and drank of course. It was weird though, because we couldn't really see the menu.

Off topic, but this thread has moved away from talking about ME so I thought I would refocus us....

.....although it has now been four days since I found out at least twice a day I still have to stop, reconfirm the fact that this is not a dream, do a little flip and then stare aimlessly at the LECOM website (although I have it memorized) thinking I'll find something new to obsess about

ahh....ok carry on

I still do that hoping some new information will pop up like maybe a virtual tour so I can drool or a fly-by of the area.😀

oh, I just got an idea, maybe google earth has pictures of the school, I'm going to have to check that out, to be continued...

What's up guys?! Amazing match-list, which was what I worried about being an inaugural class and all, not anymore! LECOM-Bradenton here I come! I say I'm interested in cardiology now because I worked in the patient monitoring field, but who knows right?

About paperwork, I'm ahead of all of you! Muahahaha! Seriously, I'm just a super-nerd that likes to get my S*** done the next second asap!

FAFSA: office of financial aid uploaded it from Erie this Monday. They told me packages should be put together starting late April/early May.
All Forms: they got them
Shots: all done except for follow-ups on hep-b and polio
Background: they got it last week.

Moving: see here's the thing, I still work full-time and was thinking of finding housing the weekend/week of Memorial Day and move the Monday before school starts, that would be 7/21st?! Is that TOO LATE? It gives me a week. I mean what are u guys gonna do once ur down there for a month? Drink till you need a new liver (that actually doesn't sound back, seeing we won't see a drop of alcohol for the next 4 yrs)?

I just don't want to freak out b/c I no longer received a nice paycheck and have to live on ramen noodles again! Anybody else got a job they gotta quit and what are you gonna do? Suggestions from current student would be nice too.

Hi Dreammona,

Where did you see the matching list? I would love to see. I am also interested in cardiology as of now. I've felt naturally interested cardiology for a long time and especially when I took physiology course.

I also have a full-time job. I am working until first week of July and then I am moving. I have to sell the house here. Lots of headache for sure.

I am not sure how feasible it's gonna be..but I am planning to do some part-time consulting/educational work related to my engineering field.

Take care all. I look forward to seeing everyone this fall.

By the way, I am looking for a house (3 Bedroom/2Bath) in Lakewood Ranch. I am monitoring craigslist. But if anyone knows of any Lakewood Ranch houses for rent, please send me the info. My family and I will greatly appreciate any help.

Lots of specialties, which is nice b/c I don't think I will do FP.

I also befriended everybody on the Facebook groups, I'm sure that includes all of you right?

ok, technical question. I know I need to submit my pre-req transcripts to LECOM, but do I also need to continue submitting them to AACOMAS?

No. AACOMAS is over once they send your app to schools.

I already have an acceptance to a school, but I was wondering if it is wise to retake my MCAT to increase my chances of getting off the alternate list/wait list. Also, I wonder how much longer does it take for the alternate list to start moving?

At this point, I don't know how this would work. How do you know your score would improve significantly? Lots of retakers LOSE POINTS. I don't think you have time to turn around better numbers. In my mind, LECOM-B is a school that puts more emphasis on GPA than on MCAT. My MCAT's higher than a whole lotta accepted applicants here (edit: and I'm waitlisted) and that's just how it goes.

I don't know if you've already posted this, but what are your current scores? If you've already signed up to take it soon, you're confident that you can do better, and LECOM is your top choice then it wouldn't hurt. But if you're scores are already "fine" then you may have been wait-listed for another reason and should work on fixing that soon (if possible). ...IMO

Everything helps...but don't take it again unless you are pretty positive that you will improve. Interviews last into April, so after that, everytime someone drops out a spot opens. In May, the allopathic schools have a deadline where they are required to drop multiple acceptances and they accept some of their waitlistees. Some openings will occur then as some people will move into allo spots. Back when I was in it, there was a deadline in July where you had to either have all of your medical, background, etc. paperwork turned in, or you had to have asked for a waiver. That gets rid of a few people and spots open up. Then, people will continue to drop out all the way until the week before class begins. Bradenton no longer accepts people after orientation begins, though. Yet, they usually begin orientation for OMSI's the last week of July-- earlier than many schools-- so you will probably know before your other school begins. :luck::luck::luck:

In case anyone didn't know, Tamiami is thus named because it goes from Tampa to Miami. Ta-Miami.

Once a week I am up in Lakewood Ranch area for a class and absolutely love driving through the area on the way back to West Bradenton. I kind of love that "wine and cheese" type lifestyle.

Just to give you the dates for this year... paperwork needs to be turned in by May 16, Pre-orientation is July 23-25, and orientation begins July 28.

^^my paperwork says April 25... hrm..

Mine says 25th as well. A question for anyone - I need to get a criminal background check. I am in NC and there were no info on NC in that LECOM packet. I am wondering if I can just order this criminal background check from a private company?

I guess I will write Heather.

I'd agree with scpod...if your MCAT is your weakness and you know you REALLY want to be here, then you should think about retaking it. I was waitlisted (in December) and retook the MCAT in the spring and was accepted soon afterwards in June, but I had a considerable jump in my score and it was my big weakness. I'm sure it's hard to motivate yourself to study to take it again when you already have an acceptance, but it just all depends on how motivated you are to be here specifically.

(just a note...anything/everything that scpod says is golden 🙂 )

Depends on when you get accepted.

My fellow waitlistees: if you're as hellbent on LECOM-B as I am, you might want to look into the immunizations, tox screen and background check ahead of time. Look back in this thread for what's needed - they call for PPD on TB which requires a 30 day lag, and if you don't have your hep B series yet, that takes months. Get on it, mates.

I believe that if it does not list your specific state info you need to do the FBI fingerprint search that is listed at the end. Or, call your local police department and ask them if they do criminal background checks. Most do, you just have to go in and get fingerprinted, fill out whatever form and pay the fee. I had to do this in Ohio for a job once.

what is PPD? I just got a two step TB test.. and it only took 10 days total.

the article says (the article Heather sent us) you can get the second test anywhere from 1 week to one year later.. i got mine done on the 18th.. went back on the 25th.. and am going back tomorrow, the 27th..

....I am in NC and there were no info on NC in that LECOM packet. I am wondering if I can just order this criminal background check from a private company?....

The way I understand it, it depends on how your state law enforcement agencies do a statewide criminal check. There was nothing about SC in that letter when I applied. I went online to the SC Law Enforcement Division and they have an online site to order a check. It cost me $25. I did that, printed it out and mailed in a copy. It was just fine.

For you, you might try giving a call here:

North Carolina Bureau of Investigation, P.O. Box 29500, Raleigh, NC 27626; (919) 662-4500.

I was wondering if some of the current students could post tips, ideas, or simple, I wish I had known (been prepared for) ______before I started school.

There is so much to think about, especially with PBL being a fairly new learning structure for us all, it would be helpful to hear some of your thoughts

thanks for the info. hello everyone, anybody in this thread get in with a 21MCAT score??? I saw in the above thread that LECOM-B places more emphasis on GPA than MCAT.. That is good news as I only had a month to prepare for MCAT, hence the low score. I have a 4.0GPA and was wondering if I had a chance...there is hope..does anyone know how many spots are still up for grabs? any HPSPers in the incoming class?

sorry this is kind of backtracking but worth knowing. At the LWR cinema you can also purchase your tickets inside at the concession but not many people know that so you can skip the lines every time.

PPD = purified protein derivative

they just have to be done at least 1 week apart. This shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

I am being a little paranoid about this..but for criminal background check, do they count speeding tickets against you? I got two speeding tickets recently..and these are the only ones I have received in recent years.

I was just curious.

Get one more, and your license could get suspended, and that might be interesting. Speeding tickets are not interesting.

Do they still require the breathalyzer?

no, I don't think that even comes up on the report.

My information said that the alcohol test could be urine or breathalyser.

Ok so I am going to sound a little ******ed or maybe just blond but...
I had forgotten to renew my plates ~two years ago and got a conditional ticket, saying that if I renewed them by my court date then I wouldn't have to pay a fine. Well there was some issue with getting them renewed because I had moved and the process was slow so I went to my first court appearence and got an extension for like 4 months later (just what the next opening was I guess) and I got my plates renewed but forgot about the new court date. Sooo I had to pay the fine, but they sent my notice to my old address and I didn't get it right away and my license was suspended until I payed the fine. Is that something I should be worried about?
I know I should have been more on top of that but hindsight...

I don't know if it's different in your state, but in FL traffic court is separate from criminal court and wouldn't show on your background checks (including whether or not your license is suspended). The only difference would be if you were arrested for a DUI or something of the sort...

I would be worried 'cause you need to take care of your license if it hasn't been taken care of already. I don't think u want to have that over your heard once school starts...

Ugh-- Ok, so after I received my old shot records, only a booster shot for Polio vaccine is recorded. Does this mean I will have to do that series all over again?! Isn't that required for you to start grade school? I sure hope I don't have to repeat...

That's what I thought but if other people were worried about speeding I got worried. And I took care of my license a while ago (when I finally got the letter).

Where did you get your record from? The card I had as a kid was incomplete. I know we have a state database with our vaccine information (I didn't know about it until I volunteered at a hospital and they pulled it up to see if I needed any). I also don't know if residents can get that information by requesting it or only HC providers.

Note to self: do not ride in the car with ANYONE in my class😱
