LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I commute from Bradenton proper and, like any working-class town, there are some neighborhoods that are very safe, and some that are less so. The neighborhood I live in is totally safe, and I have no qualms at all about walking anywhere, day or night.

I live less tahn 5 minutes from school, and although my address is Bradenton, I live in Lakewood Ranch. Thanks to the real estate market right now there are some incredible home rentals going on. I live in a 1/2 million dollar house with a pool and jacuzzi (pool and lawn service included) with a couple of roommates from school and it's rather cheap. There's a mix of older folks and young couples (mostly young couples). Kids ride their bikes all over and people walk an run through the neighboorhood. We have a couple of great parks a half mile away and great schools. The people in the neighboorhood have "block parties" on holidays and everyone is as nice as can be. Halloween was a blast in this neighborhood with all the kids and parents out dressing up and trick-or-treating, and people decorating their yards. $th of July was pretty amazing too. For me, it's just a great place to be-- but maybe some people don't like those kind of things. That's their decision to make.

how is bradenton better than NSU? first of all their both in florida(which is a plus) but NSU is right next to fort lauderdale which would be a real cool place to do rotations. Lecom Bradenton is in.... ummmmm......Bradenton, and most of thier rotations require min 20 minutes of driving. Have fun with geriatrics at bradenton. NSU is so much betta.

Good grief, I think it's funny people saying one place is better or superior to another place, each place is going to be a better fit for different people, for different reasons.

Like others have said, the school is pretty much in Lakewood Ranch, just east of Bradenton "proper". The downtown area does have it less than desirable spots, but that's nothing compared to what's down there in south florida in and around Miami. If you think 20 min. of driving is a lot, just wait 'till you have a rotation in Miami and have to deal with traffic. I could never live down there. But if someone likes that atmosphere down there better then so be it.

Scpod, that sounds like a really nice neighborhood and a great place to live.

I spent a week down there in mid-October and although it was about 80 degrees every day, it felt really cold and it was very cloudy every day. We went to Typhoon Lagoon and I expected to be really cold outside of the water but I wasn't due to no humidity. I know that I wasn't there is the middle of summer when averages are closer to 90 degrees but I just can't imagine that it feels so hot that you can't walk to school. I ride my bike several days a week for 1-2+ hours in the middle of summer here under the hot sun at 95 degrees with greater than 100% humidity, I ride my bike to work a lot of days, and walked all over the town when I was a kid during the summers here in Nebraska. I guess it's just what you're used to but, in my opinion, I think someone's kids would be just fine walking to and from school in Bradenton.

I've done 4+ hour training rides on my tri bike in 95+ degrees and high humidity, and I can say with complete confidence that few things in this world suck more ass than that. Gotta get plenty of salt, sugar, and fluid. And sunscreen.

This may sound disgusting, but I love the feeling of sweating and I love the sun. After getting my first tan of the year, I can be out in the sun for an unlimited number of hours without burning so I stupidly don't wear sunscreen and I will just ride my bike for 1 or 2 or 3 hours during the hottest days of the summer. Sometimes I will take my son in one of those covered carts attached to my bike. We always have plenty of fluids. It's the greatest.

Are you training for something, or are you just going out and riding?

Do you ever do century rides or anything?

No, I've just always liked to ride since before I can remember. I do roller skate for a roller derby team and we have games (bouts) and train pretty hard but I actually just quit because I have to get my thesis finished, get my house fixed up, and get ready to move. I struggle with my weight due to PCOS so I wake up every morning and run the treadmill and then again every night before I go to bed.

Different strokes for different folks. LECOM-Bradenton is not the best choice for all, or even most students, but for those students who thrive in PBL, it is a great place to be.

There are a couple inaccuracies in your statement. I don't think you understand PBL, at least the way it's done here. Facilitators are key to the process, and it's not something you can just do on your own. It's a guided process of critical thinking through selected cases which are carefully chosen to highlight certain basic science concepts. It is not in any way a group study session.

As far as your comments on Bradenton, while the school's mailing address is technically "Bradenton", in everything but name, the school is actually in the town of Lakewood Ranch, which is very upscale and extremely safe.

I commute from Bradenton proper and, like any working-class town, there are some neighborhoods that are very safe, and some that are less so. The neighborhood I live in is totally safe, and I have no qualms at all about walking anywhere, day or night.

Thank you for knowing what you are talking about.

Bradenton was quite ideal if you ask me. The community has everything--restaurants, grocery stores, retail, etc all in one place. Not to mention it is close to Tampa, Sarasota, and Orlando. Also, Lakewood Ranch was just plain impressive to a Pittsburgher such as me. A total community with sidewalks, million-dollar homes, an awesome new medical center, golf courses, polo clubs...it was very nice. Imo, the Ferretti's of lecom knew what they were doing when they located lecom-b. I am immensely happy to be going to lecom-b next year!

I guess I should have been more specific and said that I was talking about Lakewood Ranch...although the school addy is still technically "Bradenton".

I will say this though: When I came down to Bradenton for my interview, I drove all over the city. From Lakewood Ranch, to downtown, to the beaches...I had a cheap rental car and I checked it out alot...

While I certainly encountered some "less desirable" areas, it was nothing like the bad parts of Richmond, VA (where I live now).

It reminds me of Charlottesville, VA (which is very safe, and very nice). There are parts of Charlottesville that some pizza places won't deliver to, but compared to Richmond...it's Disneyworld. I guess it's just a question of what you're used to.

Lakewood Ranch looked georgeous, thanks for the extra details everyone.

Hi folks! I got my acceptance from LECOM-Bradenton today. I am very excited. I interviewed there on Nov. 5th. There are many good things to say about LECOM of course. Current students that we met were exceptionally friendly, helpful and excited about the school. To me, this was very impressive. Best wishes all!

Wow! I am very sorry that I offended you so. Let me explain why I feel LECOM-Bradenton is better for me than NSU.

NSU's teaching style leaves the students with zero life. None. Monday's are your exams with the written portion in the morning and the practical portion in the afternoon. There are hardly any small sized classrooms that would allow for intimate interactions, the place where the MOST learning occurs. You are on campus every other day from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Again, lectures in the morning, labs in the evening. I go to Penn State. I hate large lecture halls. While I know I can get a good nap while I am there, I should not be paying $60k (guess) per year to be autonomous. Looking at the way Bradenton runs their school... I love their facility. It looks clean, safe, and open. While NSU's school is open as well, there is just a different air floating about. For example, when talking when the students at NSU, they admitted they were exhausted and tired constantly. Always diving and rarely able to come up for air. At bradenton, however, the students seemed eager. Although admittedly tired, they appeared to be wanting to learn. It is hard to explain.

I know my post was slightly tangential and also very pointed, but that is just how I feel. I was born in Florida, raised in Texas, and go to Penn State. I know Fort Lauderdale and I know how unsafe the area can be. I am sure Bradenton has its problems, but the area surrounding the school does not lend itself towards that type of activity. I hope that you get into NSU and have a wonderful time. If you are on the wait list, then I hope you take my spot. I will definitely not be accepting that position.

LECOM-Bradenton.. I cannot wait for July 28, 2008!

>>>LECOM-Bradenton.. I cannot wait for July 28, 2008

What happens on July 28th? Is there a schedule of what happens when for the class of 2012?

It's really heart warming to see how passionate current and prospective students are at lecom-b. Congrats to all who got accepted.

If I remember right, July 28 is the first day of Orientation. Then classes start on July 31. I would have to pull my brochures out of my drawers to make sure, but I know it is definitely around that time ^.^

Would any of the current students or the prospective students (who browsed) like to give their .02 cents about where to reside near lecom-b? The only place I got a chance to look at was The Yacht Club at Heritage Harbour. I really liked this place, but I guess I just wanted to know if there is anything better/closer/cheaper that I'm not aware.

Thanks!

There is also a class of 2012 forum which you are welcome to post on as well. From past experience the c/o 2012 board won't get really busy until the bulk of the class starts looking for housing around February or so, but there is enough traffic from other students that any of your questions should get several answers.

ATTN: Current Lecom-B Students

How are the residency matches for the graduating class this year? Does anyone have any success stories? Difficulties? Thoughts to share about the first graduates?

I got my letter today!!! I was depressed all weekend because I got a waitlist letter friday from another school so I figured everything else would be bad too. But luckily I got some awesome news and everything is better. I'm going to be a doctor! I really loved the PBL and the area so I'm almost sure I'm going to decline my other two interviews and plan on moving to Florida.

I'm in! Hi class of 2012, if anyone has decided to submit that $1500!!! Any non-traditional student out there? I have been working for almost three years full-time (with a real job) and giving up everything to be a doctor. Have to sell my house and move to FL from OH (well, maybe that was a good thing to go from snow to sun!) 😎

Hey all! I'm new here. I'm applying to LECOM-Bradenton this cycle. I'm kinda worried about my application though! Did you get an update on your application at all? A notice if anything was missing? I've turned in my ACCOMAS, secondary application, fee, DO LOR, and one Prof LOR. It's been a while and I have not heard anything. My stats aren't THAT bad. lol.

Any suggestions?

I'm a spaz at this point!

Have you called the school yet? Might want to call after the holiday break and make sure you aren't missing anything.

I started the spaz process a little late. Thanksgiving is coming up waaaay to fast. But I have the number on hand to call this monday. 🙂

Question about computer requirements. So are the requirements that are listed on the website the requirements for next? I'm thinking about buying a laptop tomorrow while they are on sale and just wanted to make sure.

They should be on the website, but really any recent/relatively new laptop will be fine. Mine was over a year old when I started. They're pretty much just making sure it's capable of running all the usual office programs (powerpoint, word, etc..) and has wireless for internet.

Speaking of that...does anyone know if an Apple will be ok?

Okay I just added LECOM-Bradenton to my AACOMAS!!!
I know it's super LATE but I think I'd really like it there.
It has everything I'm looking for and some other things that are important to me: reasonable tuition, a great location, and it seems like a decent cost of living. My husband and I have lived in San Diego for 4 years. There are some places we will just NOT be happy.

Anyway, it's sooooo late, do I have a chance?

3.55 gpas

reasonable ECs

BUT I don't have letter from a DO yet. I just added Nova too which I think requires one. Would they do anything w/my app if that's the only thing that's lacking?

Good Luck! Your stats are really good... (haha better than mine and I got in)

Speaking of that...does anyone know if an Apple will be ok?

There are a handful of apply users in my class, so it'll be fine. At the beginning of the semester there were some wireless issues since they had just upgraded some equipment, but it affected both PC and mac users....and has gotten better now.

Actually, you may be surprised but Bradenton has been growing by leaps and bounds and this is with younger people coming in...not necessarily retirees. Schools (grammar, middle and high schools) are at capacity as soon as they are built. The areas east of I-75 (where LECOM-B is situated) are becoming more and more developed.

I work at Sarasota Memorial right now (20 min from B'ton), and we've got over 3500 births a year, and this is expected to increase enough that the hospital is planning on building another tower onto the hospital just for OB/GYN, nursery and pediatrics. Manatee Memorial and Lakewood Ranch Medical Center are the hospitals in Manatee County that provid OB/GYN.

So, please, it is more than just geriatrics down here.

Kris

Well for some reason just sitting here I got this "feeling" about Bradenton and I just submitted it into my AACOMAS..eep, my last 100$ will be spent on this..

on the way to my interview at LECOM B i saw a 7 foot alligator on the side of the road by a large pond, it was one of the most amazing things I have ever scene.

I'll try and trump you on that one...haha

When I was at lecom-b, they told us that the week prior to my interview they had to remove a gator from the lake by the school (aka "lake erie") who was bothering people.

That's a common site in Florida, they are usually all over the golf courses too!!

The secret to gators is if they start chasing you run in a zig zag fashion, They are very fast but have no ability for lateral motion, so it is really difficult for them to change directions

Laura, thanks for sharing that but I hope I never have to heed that advice.:scared:

When I went to LECOM-B for the admissions conference they said they have a 'pet' gator named Lee (get it?) that lives in the lake right by the school. If I do get in to LECOM, lets just say I won't be walking around outside at night...

Yea, pretty common site in Florida. I'd think it'd be stranger to have a lake that doesn't have a gator. In my neighborhood we have a small little lake (more like a large pond) and we've got a smallish (4 feet?) gator living in it.

HE 15 MAN :meanie:

you will find many gator fans at LECOM B 😍 just saying

PS- Congrats on that win today
