LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

Just watch out for Vista with new computers, if you can get one with XP. I just got a new machine and I have Vista, and have had so many problems, not to mention that it is slow (and I got a super fast computer).

Hmmm. My Vista is Blazing fast. Waaay faster than any of my XP machines. Try turning off that stupid sidebar crap. It's all useless anyway. That frees up a ton of processing power...

You might also check and see what anti-virus program you're running. These days, Norton and Symantec are almost worse than actually having a virus...I'm using Sophos (which I got free from my school) and it uses far less processing power...I can't even tell it's running.

Nope, not running the sidebar and have a McAffe pro antivirus. Sometimes it is fast, but other times it just freezes up for 5-10 min or more. Just alot of bugs in the system, my husband works with microsoft, and even the people who work there use XP still. I guess that they are supposed to come out with a new service pack over the summer to fix the majority of the bugs, but you can't install any of the service packs that they have to date because they cause more problems.

That's really weird. Mine never does that and I'm on the computer ALOT...too much, really. I use it for everything: notes, sdn, sdn, sdn...movies, tv, music recording...literally, everything.

Go figure...I've had to Control-Alt-Delete a couple times and cancel a process that crashed, but that always fixes the problem...I've never had to reboot or anything...hmmm...

Thanks for those awesome website you told everyone about for the laptops. I think I'm going to get a HP laptop, those are generally good right? And yes, I'm going to get a 15-inch one as well.

No problem! I don't buy anything without comparing prices online! The laptop review site has great reviews too...

...on a related note: You know what bugs me? Those Mac/PC commercials. I mean, I get it. It's kinda cute, but they hit a little below the belt sometimes...

...

Sorry. Just venting a little. Horrible test today, and it's over. So now...to sleep!

Venting is always good!

I cannot stand that commercial. It's not cute, it's deeply annoying, I feel like my IQ will drop to negative..wait, it's already negative.

I am hearing a lot of bad things about vista too. I am glad you like it though digitlnoize. If I find it to be that bad, I will end up buying XP and replace vista with XP. Or Linux? Perhaps not..LECOM will probably not support that though.

I would consider buying a MAC but I cannot justify the price for what I will be using though.

I've been really tempted to get one of those Asus EePC's. The new ones are going to be even better.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone has any information about the flexibility of the required "sportsbra/shorts" dress code for girls during OMT lab at LECOM-Bradenton. While I understand what is required of a physician, and the benefit of palpating with no barriers, I still feel uneasy about this as a practicing Muslim, and as a modest person in general. For those of you who attend the school, is there flexibility here? Is is appropriate to ask about this during the interview?

I will probably receive much criticism with this kind of question, but please be sensitive, as it is an issue of some concern for me. Thanks everyone!

I'm currently finishing my second year at LECOM-B. I have never taken off my shirt. We've had it requested twice in class, both times in first year, both times with visiting professors. I didn't do it. One thing I would recommend just in case someone is insistent is that you get a sports bra that covers down to the shorts- they are available.

So I called LECOM today and found out that I have moved from #30 (on Monday, April 21st) on the waitlist to #26!!! Not bad for only a few days in between. Hopefully soon I'll be in the teens! LoL. 😉

Awesome! I hope you get to #1 at warp speed and then someone needs to push you over to our 2012 pool!

Thanks! I hope so, too! By the way, does anyone know what the deadline is to fill out your FAFSA stuff?????

Thanks! I hope so, too! By the way, does anyone know what the deadline is to fill out your FAFSA stuff?????

FAFSA on the Web applications must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, June 30, 2009.
Corrections on the Web forms must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, September 15, 2009.

I'm not sure if LECOM has their own deadline in regards to the FAFSA.

Oh, don't forget to complete and submit the authorization and consent forms to the Office of Financial Aid:

Authorization to Credit Account with Federal Title IV Funds
Consent to Access and Receive Electronic Notices

Going through Bradenton withdrawal again! How's everyone doing?

I finally got my drug/alcohol testing on Friday, still hoping that they did it right though. The tech at the lab didn't know which test included all of the list of 10 drugs, so she took my urine and said she would just give the list to the lab to figure out! I hate Quest. Anyways, I think I'll call my docs office to see if they got the results yet.

So, my husband left today for Florida, and I'm stuck here with the kids until the house sells! I am soo ready to get out of here. It actually was snowing yesterday, and it's only in the 30's again. It was in the 80's last week! Two more weeks for school, then I'm ready to go. Sell house sell!

I don't know that there's an official deadline because people are accepted all the way until school begins. However, this is from an email we got in February:

So when will you receive your financial aid award notification e-mail? We award students by semester start date; progressing OMS3 & OMS4 will receive their award e-mail first, beginning mid-April, as they have a semester start date of June. We will then award 1st and 2nd year student students, beginning mid-June.

So....if you want your award in June, you might want to go ahead and do the FAFSA thing ASAP. I'd certainly go ahead and send it in now, even if you haven't een officially accepted yet.

Hey Kate! U hang in there these last two weeks... are you and the little ones going to move down after school or are you going to wait for movement on the house?

Sooo, I've been waiting now for over a month for my doctor's office to get the immunizations they ordered... and no luck. I was hoping to get my shots through the Dr because my insurance pays 100%, now I will have to pay about $150 at health department. 🙁 Trying to save those pennies for books!

I'm getting ancy and can't wait for school to start... but in the meanwhile enjoying time with my little man (who has pink eye btw 🙁). He hates the eye drops and wrestles me with his feet... the joys of motherhood! 🙄

hi everyone! i'm new to this thread and have just begun researching lecom very recently. it didn't take long for me to fall in love with it! pbl, location, size, etc. seems ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! it's sort of bad though, b/c this is my finals week and instead of studying and writing papers, i'm online looking at pictures of bradenton 😍

anyway, i shouldn't get ahead of myself: i'm applying this summer and, being from illinois and having average scores (and a slightly low science gpa), i'm not sure they'll even invite me for an interview. but i'm retaking my mcat thus august, hoping for above a 27 (got a 25 the first time) to offset the 2.9 sci gpa. wish me luck, and feel free to dish out whatever advice you may have.

also, what's the deal with the 3 yr track? i'm hoping to go into primary care (peds), so that's definitely something i wouldn't mind looking into ...

As far as I know the 3yr deal is only up at the Erie campus.

Good luck with the app. Regarding the GPA, can you retake any of the classes that brought it down? Keep in mind that AACOMAS replaces grades from retaken courses.

Sooooo...is it just me, or does it seem like most of you people in the incoming class are married/engaged??? I was hoping to meet some ladies here...hahaha.

Hey, I'm from Illinois also, getting out of this cold weather soon. Best of luck in applying. 3-yr primary care scholars program is only at Erie, but really the one more year is worth it for guaranteed PBL! Is there a class that you can retake over the summer to get your sci GPA over a 3.0? That's what I did last year and then applied in Aug (I re-took a basic Bio that I had taken 10 years ago and got a C, getting an A in the retake really boosted my GPA, and after all of the upper level Bio classes that I've had the general bio was super easy).

Thank you so much! We are currently waiting on the house. If it doesn't sell by June sometime, we will just move down there into an appt and put the house in the hands of a realtor I think.

I really hope that things calm down a little in the fall. This has been such a stressful year with applications, school ending, moving, jumping through all of the hoops to get our medical stuff done, etc and so on. I think that I'm paying out of pocket for all of my blood work and now the hep B series. Oh well, getting used to debt!

Sorry your little guy has pink eye! There have been alot of bugs going around lately at my sons pre-school. He had a bit of a cold last week too. Just that time of year here though. Hope he feels better soon!

SINGLE FEMALE right here, the only man in my life is a cat named George (but I think he might be gay...shhh)

Ok you all, I think we need to start voo doo chants for Marathon and DrMidlife......we are coming down to M-day (matriculation day) and we need to get these suckers in!

(if there are other lurkers out there waiting that I am not thinking about feel free to add your name to the chant, my apologies if I left you out)

i really wish i could! money makes that tough, though. plus, i have to work to help my family this upcoming year... i'm hoping that they'll see/take into consideration that i've held a job throughout college (save one semester when i was taking p chem, biochem and an mcat course). without retaking sciences, do i have NO CHANCE?!!

in case you need more information to give me a better idea:

2.9 sci, as of right now
3.28 overall gpa (prob 3.3 after this sem)
3.6 non science

25 mcat, will hopefully go up
DO and MD rec
over 300 hours of community service
over 500 hours shadowing a physician (1/3 of that time was with the DO)
president and vice president of two organizations on campus
member of 3 more organizations on campus
finally, held a work study job for all but one semester in college

thanks!

Do i have NO CHANCE?!!

I don't know if I would say that you have "no chance". How's your overall GPA?

If your overall GPA is good and you ROCK the MCAT (>30 at least)...you'll probably be fine.

I had the opposite problem. High science, Low overall, 28 MCAT. But I got in just fine, very early on. My overall wasn't quite as low as yours, but I didn't rock the MCAT either...concentrate on really killing the MCAT. It will prove you're good in the sciences.

Some schools consider BCPM GPA > Overall. Others are the opposite. Based on my own experience, I might venture that LECOM cares more about science, but n=1 is about the worst sample you can get...😀

All of your stats are just a balance...if one thing sucks, you need the others to make up for it. Be interesting in your statements...have some good medical experiences...

Inside info from the dean:

As far as GPA, your undergrad school is ranked in a quartile based on some obscure education journal that ranks them all, and you are considered with that in mind. IOW, a high GPA at the bottom quartile might not be as good as a lower one at the top quartile.

As for MCAT, the BS section has proven to be more indicative of success with previous classes than any other part of the MCAT. If you are difficient in biology, I'd work heavily on that.

😱😱😱 Holy crap! I wonder where they rank my school. I wouldn't rank it very highly, but that's just me...wow.

Bio=10 here.

Your non-sci definitely helps. My overall GPA was not much higher than that (~3.3 something or 3.4) and science was a little above 3.0. So definitely focus on doing well on the MCAT. Whatever prep you need to do, do it. Do some practice ones, see where you're weak, etc...

ahhh...so that is how I got in! Well it is about time that $40K Vanderbilt tuition was put to good use

No no, I didn't mean that you don't have a chance with your current stats. Your overall GPA is better than mine. I was just thinking that it's still early and you could make your app even stronger (I think that even though it is a very small difference to go from 2.9 to 3.0, that 3.0 is almost a barrier in some peoples minds). Sorry, I didn't mean to come accross as negative. I think that you have a good chance with your current plans.

So, what about someone like me that is combining credits from 6 different colleges for my undergrad degree? (not that any are impressive)

That's one of the cases where the other parts of your application become more significant. Keep in mind that all this statistical stuff really does is help get you an interview. There are still other factors involved. The best part, though, is that anyone who gets an interview can get accepted if they are truly impressive during their campus visit. It isn't a numbers game at that point.

that really is true.. my numbers suck 🙂 and when i was on the phone with june, she told me that i really must have blown the interviewers out of the water to be accepted (hard to believe!).. i wasn't quite sure how to take that.. but since i got accepted, i didn't really care!

👍👍Thanks for the love!!
Just followed another D.O. and am getting a letter in from her as soon as possible and am flooding admissions w/some other recs as well :beat: . So, at least I'll go down shootin' 😉

thats so awesome thisisyourlife! i have sim. stats (tad higher gpas), and similar ECs as you, so i'm hoping for the same acceptance you received!

that's good to know! scpod, you seem to be the go to person for advice on here, so thanks for all the helpful info. i think i'm just going to try to kick the mcat's butt this time around and hope for the best. there's not more than that that i can do at this point. out of curiosity: is there any way to find this obscure journal and see where my university ranks?? haha!

kate, do not feel bad! i'm just being a super paranoid premed student. your advice was really great and if i could, i would definitely take it. i'm still not completely ruling out retaking genetics or the gen bios at a community college, since they are so much cheaper. but, i wonder if that makes it seem like i'm taking the easy way out to be retaking classes at that level, when i've taken them at a more competitive university first?

Stupid Drug testing!! Well, more like Stupid Quest! So, I got my results back today... After bringing them the list that Heather emailed us, they still managed to miss a few. No marijuana or PCP, and is Methadone the test for methamphetamine? Anyways, have another call in to my docs office to see if they can add these tests or if they need me to go and give another sample. Thank goodness I still have a couple more weeks until all of my stuff is done!

For me, I really didn't care about them looking at it as taking the easy way. I re-took it at the only place that was reasonable as far as price and time (my university didn't offer it at a time I could take it). I just wanted to get above that 3.0 mark one way or another.

Hey guys,

I have a question for SCPOD and the rest of y'all. So I just interviewed at the beginning of April and received a waitlist letter. I'm really not sure how the whole waitlist process works at Bradenton. When do they usually start accepting people of the waitlist? And since you have to pay 1500 dollars to reserve your seat at LECOM, do people generally end up not attending?

I just really want to go there and don't know anything about the Bradenton process. I called Ms. Shively and she said the committee ranks its top 30 candidates, but she said she couldn't tell me when they do it etc.? Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

They have already ranked their top 30, if you back a bit on this thread there are a bunch of people that have rankings already, and they have begun to move, so they are already pulling people off the list. When did you call her? Maybe if you call again they can tell you if you're in the ranked group yet. From last year, I think that they add people to the rankings as they pull people off, so that they always have around 30 ranked and ready.

Their waitlist is a good place to be. I really hope that it moves fast for you and the others on there so you can join our class.

Yeah, the list does seems to be moving fairly quickly. I started out as #30 on April 21st and was #24 on April 28th. Don't lose hope. I'm being optimistic, and it's looking good. My friend and I signed our lease at Colonial Grand in Lakewood Ranch today. $905 a month for a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom that's literally 3 minutes from school. I'm sooooo excited! We move in July 15th! 😀

i am living there too! my lease begins july 8.. but i am not going to move in until a week or so after that.. i have a 1bdrm. 755 a month.

Geez.....and I just thought you went there for the excellent football program 😀.

P.S. Congrats on that 1000th post. I know you've worked hard on it...LOL.

oh wow! Thank you, thank you, it is an honor....I can't believe I didn't even notice. I thought perhaps bells would go off or confetti would fly out of my computer or something....such a disappointment

Man, I've been on here a year longer and I'm still at 590! I guess I just read too much!

 well here's a handclap for yah! True, not confetti, but sometimes we have to take what we can get. 😀

I don't see how you guys do it! I feel like I spend waaay to much time on here, and I'm 1/4 and 1/2 away from you both! Sheesh. I guess I read too much, too... then again, on a lot of people's posts, I feel if you just don't have anything nice to type, then you shouldn't type anything at all. 😉

That is funny girls, I am not quite sure what that says about me, perhaps I am a bit of a blabbermouth. I think it comes from being an only child and an army brat, I talk to anyone, anytime about anything

This is it mostly! Also, I used to look alot at the pre-allo side since I was planning to apply to just all Illinois schools, and the people over there were just mean so I never wanted to post anything!
