LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

^^I will definitley look into it.. I didn't even know I would be allowed to rent a car since I am under 25 (eta, I am 21).. and that is how it is around here in general.. But I will check it out since I will be booking everything on Friday 🙂

Thanks for all of your help!!

Hey I did the primetime limos and my ride to and from the airport was approx $110. The link to the website should be in the email you get from LECOM that lists accomendations and what not. I didn't know how expensive it would be to rent a car and I was being lazy and didn't want to go through all the trouble. So if you want it really easy I recommend primetime limos (you actually ride in a van!) they were very nice and it makes for an incrediably easy day. Congrats on the interview

Thank you! I was actually thinking of taking that shuttle service because I am nervous to drive around in an area i have never been to.. It would probably be safer for me to just take a shuttle (I think my parents would agree - I was so nervous about my first day of EMT training I wasn't paying too much attention to the road.. and got into a car accident.. now they are afraid to let me drive anywhere I haven't driven before!)

Yeah I dont like driving around by myself in a unfamiliar place. I can't really read directions and drive at the same time so I loved using the shuttle. It was really quite affordable too. It's probably almost the same price as renting a car. Anyways it worked out great for me. Good luck with everything!

I flew into Sarasota-Bradenton Airport (SRQ) for the same price as Tampa...It's WAY to far to drive from Tampa...I did rent a car for my time down there 'cause I wanted to check out the area...it's a good idea, you can go to the beach that way 🙂

^^yeah I just checked flights yesterday.. looks like there is one flight going into Sarasota from Chicago on the 15th.. via AirTran.. I will probably be on it.. lol. Im flying straight from there to Erie so I don't have to worry about getting a round trip..

So for those that already sent in their deposit has your check been cashed yet? Mine hasn't and its so hard to keep that 1500 in the bank. I wish they'd hurry up and cash it so I don't have to keep checking. Just wondering if they cashed anyone elses. BTW I sent it in at the beginning of December and I got the confirmation email saying they got it.

They have not deposited mine yet either. I have not got a confirmation e-mail either, but I sent my deposit in the Wednesday before Christmas.

Haha! I sent a cashier's check through my bank, so once they wrote the check, they automatically deducted it from my account. If I had $1500 in my account right now, I would be sooo nervous. Good luck in keeping it in ^.^

i searched the forum but could not find a thread on this. I received an e-mail from LECOM stating that my file was "incomplete" because I received C- 's in both Orgo 1 + 2 (the only C's i have ever gotten). I have a 3.6 GPA.. 3.2 BCP and 3.98 non-science as well as 50 hours shadowing a D.O. and over 100 hours shadowing an M.D. I never thought to re-take the class because my under-grad institution counted those grades as passing( I received A's in both orgo labs) and I still had a competitive GPA. Will the adcom really dismiss my whole app because of my orgo grades? Thanks.

Hrm.. I would contact LECOM-B directly. They told me that I was deficient 6 credits in humanities, but when I called, they personally reviewed my application and told me I was fine. Their standards are a C or better, but I am sure that if a C- is adequate for your University, then it would work for LECOM. I do not know for sure, though. I would definitely call them first thing in the morning, as well as possibly send an email to Heather. She is really awesome and helps out a lot!

Good luck!

I appreciate the advice! Also, I see that you will be attending LECOM in the fall. I just sent them an e-mail, but I was wondering if you could tell me what constitutes a behavioral science course because the email also said that I was lacking 6 credits of those courses? I have taken Bio I+II, genetics, physiology, anatomy, cell molec, botany, ecology, psych stats, calc 1+2, gen chem 1+2, orgo 1+2, and physics 1+2, and i will be taking biochem and microbio in the spring (my last 2 required undergrad classes needed to graduate)..so I cannot imagine what I could be missing? Thanks a lot and congrats on your acceptance!

You know whats interesting? I think that I am incomplete on the behavioral sciences too. When I was looking through AACOMAS, the tabulation for my behavioral credits came to 4 credits, I'm technically 2 credits short. Yet LECOM E AND B still called me for interviews. I guess if I'm accepted they will make me take 2 credits worth before fall classes. I honestly don't know.

OK. So here is what happened with me. I had completed all of my required Humanities and Behavioral Science courses at Penn State before submitting my AACOMAS. However, when LECOM-B got my application, they found that I was deficient 6 credits (2 classes) of that General Education course. I contacted Heather and explained my situation to her. She looked over my class list and said that certain classes would cover the required 6 credit course load and I received an email confirming that. I would say if you have any problems with credits counting or not, contact Heather IMMEDIATELY. Since next semester is starting in a couple of weeks, you still might be able to schedule them before matriculation if she doesn't find any acceptable courses in your list.

Behavioral science courses are things like Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, etc. Basically, they are General Education courses that your University forces you to take outside of your required science classes in order to be more "well-rounded."

I hope this helps!

I have an interview for LECOM-B on Jan 30th. Is anybody in the same boat? I am so exicted. Can anybody give me tips/advices for traveling and interviewing process? Thanks in advance.

The interview is easy. Stay at the econo lodge. Eat at the adjacent waffle house.

Check out the interview section if you haven't already. It has a ton of good info for the interview (the questions asked, places to stay, etc)

Good Luck Bonsante! I have been reading your posts! I wish you well and hope to be interviewed at LECOM Bradenton as well!!! (I'm still status pre-MCAT) This school would be my first choice (LMU DeBusk 2nd) and I hope to see you in the Class of 2012.

TexasTri: Thanks for the suggestion about econo/waffle. I put that in my file on this school. Did you rent a car?

Does LECOM-B send out secondaries to everyone? I ask because I'm a late applicant and just received my first ever secondary, from LECOM-B, earlier today!!

Question regarding the essay prompts: any suggested lengths? Should I write these like a personal statement essay or just straight facts, short and sweet? Thanks for the help!

Not to burst your bubbles but I think they do send secondaries to everyone (I got excited at first too). I wrote a paragraph or two for most all of my secondary essay questions and try not to repeat too much stuff from your personal statement if you can help it. Good luck!

haha yeah I figured they send to most, especially being that I received the secondary via email 2 days after my primary was sent out 😉

appreciate the help, thanks!

So...they're having snow flurries in Florida!!! I thought that wasn't supposed to happen there!

I know I shouldn't complain because there are colder places in the US, but :scared::scared::scared: it is cold. the good thing is that come this weekend we will be back in the 70s. No snow flurries down here but it is windy making it feel colder than the temp.

Looking forward to get back to Florida winter. Currently in North Carolina doing some skiing and it was very interesting to ski yesterday in 1 degree weather (well below zero w/ wind chill), definitely looking forward to getting back, guess I'll miss this recent cold snap.

Anyone interviewing Jan 9? Any idea on how full the class is at this point?

Id like to know how full the class is also.. I'll be down there the for interview on the 16th.. and as of now, its my first choice school.

If I end up being accepted to LECOM and attending, will I be able to do rotations in Chicago area? Or do you have to stay with LECOM affiliated hospitals?

I am very interested to hear about this too. ThisIsYourLife, I hope you do get accepted at LECOM-Bradenton.

If some current students could shade some light on this topic..that would be nice. Do we have to stay with LECOM affiliated hospitals or can we set up on our own .. which I am not sure how easy it would be..

I would be interested to do rotations in NC or FL (Gainesville area, Orlando area)..

Thanks.

This is sort of an evolving situation. As I understand it: Core rotations have to be done at affiliate hospitals, but, in the past, students have been able to set up affiliate relationships fairly easily by getting hospitals to sign off on some paperwork and agree to take at least two students. So, basically, if you wanted to go somewhere and could get the affiliate agreement worked out, you could go. The clinical ed department's goal in the not too distant future is to have all core rotations done at LECOM affiliates in the southeast and they are slowly setting up enough sites to enable this to happen. The issue is one of quality control - this will enable the school to standardize third year much more and ensure that everyone learns what they need to. Of course, electives can still be done anywhere, but depending on how this process works out, there is an increasingly good chance you will be required to do your cores at affiliates in the southeast.

Maybe scpod can confirm my understanding of this....? I tend to doze during dean's hour 😀.

I understand about the cores, actually, I always assumed cores had to be done where you are.. but if not.. all the better.. I'll have to ask during my interview day, or something.

You're right. You can currently sign up an affiliate and do your core there if you really want to go through all the trouble. But, that is likely to be taken away sometime in the future because they want more control over our education. They also want to make sure we all have good step two scores 😀.

Don't count on finding out that from your interviewers or the staff you meet then. What they know about rotations is really very general. You'd really have to talk directly to the clinical ed department.

oh allright, well nevermind then! Any way I can contact the clinical ed department? Do they have an email or phone #??

I would start with calling the main line at the Bradenton campus:941-756-0690 and asking them to transfer you to the Clinical Education Department or if possible the e-mail address of someone who can address your question.
