LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, I guess the powerpoints are outside the actual note board.

BTW, I went ahead and added you, Kate, and Laura to the LECOM students group in case you want to check out the full note section. If anybody else wants to check it out and can confirm you are an incoming student, pm me.

Just promise me - casual viewing only - no studying allowed. 😀

Seriously take scpod's advice and spend as much time relaxing before school starts as you can.

We'll get access to that once we get our email right? I still have to finish this semester and I'm not ready to scare myself yet. 🙂 But once the semester is over I will be thinking about medical school most of my waking moments I'm sure.

BTW when do we get our email addresses?

Guys,

I am looking for apartments/houses for rent that's under $850 and it's not a lot! Where are you guys going to be at? Heritage Harbor has a full waitlist so that's already out of the question, what other apartment complex that's good, includes washer/dryer (at least connection) and allows pets? I just need a place to live then we will talk about studying...

If you try to live by yourself you will spend a fortune. Find a roommate or two and you can live like a king. There are 2, 3 and 4BR houses for rent at incredibly low prices because people paid too much for them a few years ago and can't afford to sell them. Call Lakewood Ranch Realty and ask them to send you some pictures and info on places near school and west of I-75. You'll be amazed.

OK, so I'm getting a jump start on doing taking it easy before school starts. Went to the beach 2x's last week... the second time we went to Anna Maria Island (just off of Bradenton Beach). It was soooo fabulous.

It was definately a week that makes you understand why people move to Florida. For those coming down over the next couple of months, you will have to be sure to go to the beach, dig your toes into some white sand, and feel the warm breeze while chillin under a shady umbrella. 😉

Florida Waterman. That's the picture in my sig 🙂.

At what point do you know where and how your rotation schedule will be? How does that work anyways? Are your 3rd and 4th years planned in advance, or do you finish 3rd year first before deciding on 4th year?

I know I'm getting ahead of myself-- but I'm curious.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself-- but I'm curious.

There are thirteen four-week rotations including vacation. So, you get divided into 13 groups based on whether you want a particular area, rotation order or a particular vacation month. For instance, if 13 people wanted to go to Pensacola they would each go to a different group. The rotations follow the same sequence but are staggered by one month. So, if there was one OB slot available for each rotation, group one would have it in Jan, group 2 in Feb, etc. That way, the only people you are competing with are in your group. If you're the only one who wants Pensacola, then you get the spot.

You fill out a survey with your preference at the end of 1st year. The class president usually divides you into groups over the summer. You work with your group, fill out three preferences and turn them in around November of 2nd year. At the beginning of the year you get a list of your spots and find out if they had to move you around to a 2nd or third choice. You can still shift stuff around, though.

The only problem is if you want to go up north because you have to wait for Erie to finish first. But, there are still plenty of slots open if you really want to go there-- more than they could ever fill. If you want to stay in Bradenton you will probably have slots at more than one hospital. I'm actually moving a little closer toward Orlando and doing everything in one place-- except for some electives that I chose to do elsewhere.

During third year, you pick spots with your group for forth year-- well in advance.

Hope that makes sense...

^^^

It does scpod-- thanks for that. 🙂 (although I had to read it over a couple times... this is going to be a looong year 🙄).

I know the list is long but could tell us from the class of 2012:
1. Which books to get
2. Which to avoid
3. Which should be used instead.
4. What you can hold off on buying for the first semester/year
5. What should be on here that isn't
6. If you've heard that any of these will change

Any input is appreciated

Hey Everyone-

I have my interview at LECOM-B on Wednesday. I was wondering if anyone knows how long it takes after you've been interviewed to find out whether or not you've been accepted. 🙂

When I interviewed back in February, also a Wednesday, I heard back from them by the following Saturday. So, 10 days or so.

I'm not sure about Bradenton, but interviews for the past month at Erie were for wait lists only.

About 10 days, but that was back in September.

It depends on when the comittee meets. For me they met on the following Tuesday, but I have also heard that they meet on Thursdays, so if that is the case, then you would hear the following week. They will tell you at your interview when they plan on meeting to review your file.

Good luck!:luck:

Hey! I need some MAJOR help with finding an apartment.. I have never looked for one before.. so I don't even know where to start.. Ive been on move.com apartments.com and all those places and I can't find anything close, cheapish, and with decent accomidations included.. I will be searching from a distance (Chicago) as I can't travel down there to look because I need to work.. does anybody have any ideas? I have heard places are on waitlists and now I am getting concerned.. I dont even know where places are that a lot of students stay.. I can't remember what they told us in the interview because I was WAY to nervous.. should I call a realator? If so, who (name #??) ..

thanks for your help.. you can PM me 🙂

Check the LECOM-B SGA website: http://lecomsgabradenton.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=159#1.

There are tons of people on there looking for roommates.

Hey guys, just an FYI: this is finals week, so current students may be more or less AWOL for the next few days. Don't worry, we'll be back. 😀

These are ones I think I used during the first semester:

-Gray's Anatomy for Students Drake
-Color Atlas of Anatomy Rohen 0781790131 --
-Basic Medical Biochemistry Marks 0781721458
-Behavioral Science in Medicine Fadem 0781736692 <--just a small book, didn't use much though, could just use the library's copy
-Mosby's Guide to Physical Exam Pkg Seidel 0323043208
-The Developing Human Moore 0721694128 <-- Grudgingly, it's a badly written book
-Medical Genetics Jorde 0323040357
-Histology: A Text and Atlas Ross 0781772214
-The Immune System Parham 0815340931 <-- Wasn't sure, don't THINK I used it during 1st semester though, you will 2nd semester
-Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease Kumar 0721601871 (they make a slightly smaller one people called "Teenage Path", not as wordy/intimidating
-Textbook Medical Physiology Guyton 0721602401
-Basic and Clinical Pharmacology Katzung 0071451536

Other books I used:

- I ended up getting a dictionary but wish I didn't. I got Dorlands and don't like it at all. In the very beginning of PBL you'll be looking up a lot of medical terms and a dictionary can helpful, especially if your facilitator doesn't like people using laptops, but both the dictionaries have online sites with the same material.

- Mosby's Diagnostic Lab Manual - Having some sort of lab/test manual is helpful to have. There's a couple different ones in the library so you could always hold off and see which one you like better. Plus there are sites online with pretty much the same level of information.

-I got the small handheld books for both Guyton Physio and Path. You'll see them eventually, just really small versions that sort of summarize and hit on the main parts of each chapter. Definitely not enough to study from, but I'll sometimes use them to review a chapter after I've read it or to do a real quick read of another chapter that I haven't picked for a test.

And then come 2nd semester you'll add on Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases and more Immunology. I would assume most of the books they'd keep the same but there could be some changes.

As always different people used different books, and some people used review type books more than others. I think the library here has pretty much all the books on our list, plus a bunch of others so you can always read in the library and see how you like a book before you go and buy it.

Ok, I know it has been asked before, but when do we get the info about insurance and such? We are weighing out different options for my husbands work situation and need to know about how much the insurance will be costing for the family.

I want to say that we really didn't get that information until right before we started or during orientation. If there's nothing about it in the matriculation packet then it must not be until orientation.

It's good insurance, just not the cheapest. I don't have any kids yet so I'm on through the school and my wife has hers through her work, cheaper that way. Haven't looked into what putting kids on it would be. I do know there are a few with families here who have everyone on it.

Especially since you're trying to make decisions involving his work I would just call the front office and get a rough ballpark of what it be to put the family on the school's insurance vs. just you and the kids vs. just you.

And depending on your family's eligibility you could also check out Florida's KidCare (basically Medicaid for children only): http://www.floridakidcare.org/eligibility.html

It's official. I just finished a 3 interview trip. No matter what I hear from those schools I will be attending LECOM-Bradenton. Those other schools just couldn't compete.

And that is why I cancelled my other interviews after my acceptance to LECOM-B. I knew there was no contest.

Is there something you want to share with the group

lol. well im not exactly sure what "questionable" means.. the hospital I work at just called me about it.. and i had the results sent directly to lecom.. so i didn't see it before it was sent out.. i just called heather about it and she told me to have my fingerprint check sent to them. i am angry about this, though. 16$ wasted on the other background check.

I have been lurking for a long time, but have not had any real reason to post until now...
Friday, March 7 - Interview day at LECOM-B. Impressed by school and PBL curriculum. I felt my interview went very well and couldn't wait to hear back.

Wednesday, March 26 - It seems like I have been waiting forever to hear back from LECOM-B. During the interview day June was giving the "admissions talk" (as opposed to Heather who usually does this because Heather apparently called in sick) and she said she expected letters to be sent by the following Friday(March 14) and indicated several times that she didn't want us to call and ask about our status. I decide to call the admissions office and ask about my application status because I can't stand the suspense. I call, June was unavailable so I left her a voice mail asking her if i could have a status update on my application and leaving her my number.

Thursday, March 27 10:34AM CST - I received a call from June and she said that these were "her favorite calls to make" and I was "definitely accepted" and that they were "a little backed up in the admissions office" so it would be "a few weeks" until I get anything in the mail. I am ecstatic! I had two other interviews which resulted in waitlists and I am so happy that I will definitely be going to medical school in the fall!

Today, Wednesday 16 10:08AM CST - I received a call from Annette in the admissions department informing me that I am number 14 on the "alternate list" and that I will most likely get in within a month. I tell her of the conversation that I had with June several weeks prior and she her response was "I must be using different terminology."
I asked her "is the class full?"
She replied "yes"
I asked "and I am to understand that I do not have a spot in the class at the moment? that 14 people must choose to give up their seat, then I will be in the class?"
She replied "yes"
I said "I'm confused - June said I was "definitely accepted" when I spoke with her"
She said "I don't know the conversation you had with June, I'll forward you to her voice mail."

I just left a message for June asking her to give me a call.

I understand that being number 14 on the waitlist carries with it a high likelihood of being accepted into the class. But, I thought I was "definitely accepted."
Wow, was my bubble burst this morning...

Keep your head up sdsasen! Most schools go through 15-40 people on the waitlist. It probably wouldn't hurt to send a LOI, especially if Bradenton is your first choice. You do stand a good chance of getting in.

You have every right to be disappointed regarding that call...I hope everything works out for you in the end. Perhaps they can move you up further on the list since they technically accepted you already. Good luck to you! :luck:

Man, that really sucks! I hope that there was just a mistake and you really are outright accepted right now. Good luck!

Over $16? Come on. I spent 155 times that just on secondaries. If LECOM-B accepts me I'll be eating a $2k deposit at Nova. This is a 6 figure process: don't sweat the little stuff.

Curious how you chose LECOM over NSU. I'm in at LECOM, but waiting to hear from Nova.

Oh if we could arrange a trade.

Nova's great. But PBL's ideal.

I'm just not sold on PBL just yet. Fear of the unknown, I guess. If only we could trade indeed. Ironically, I interviewed really well at Nova and didn't feel great about LECOM at all. Go figure. Currently waitlisted at Nova, and it seems it's a crap shoot at this point.

More just upset because i work 7 days a week because im trying to save up to move halfway across the country.. and im wasting money like this.. and I dont have time to travel to another city to get my fingerprint done (gas money, time mostly)..

and second.. im FREAKING about what lecom is going to say about my first background check.. i mean, yes, i talked to heather.. but i have a feeling i will be getting a phone call as soon as they receive it.. then im going to send them the fingerprint one.. but they probably will have some black mark on my record because the first one said something bad..

and no worries. i spent QUITE a bit on the primary apps, secondaries, interviews.. etc. the reason i was broke in the first place.

I bet they you will not get matched to a residency because of this, I mean who wants someone as a resident with a 'questionable' mark on their background, you might as well not go 🙂

I wouldn't worry to much if they thought you were a criminal they wouldn't have accepted you in the first place, you will be fine, I am sure they deal with enough of these issues that they don't get too freaked out until the feds come knocking on their door (and arn't wearing dress code approved clothing)

I wouldn't worry about this at all. Your next check will clear you, and then you're cleared, unless they find out about your meth lab, staffed by bunnies transported across state lines.

I feel like a pusher to bring this up, but you can get a retroactive private loan (against your last year of school) to help lighten your load right now. PM me if you want more info.

when will we get the required book list? Id like to start purchasing them now.. since it will be quite the expense.. my other question is.. if im only flying to florida.. what would be the best way to get all my books there.. my parents *might* drive down with some of my stuff.. but id really prefer they didn't make the drive..

Wow, was my bubble burst this morning...

You won't get a "ranking" on the waitlist unless they plan on accepting you. They want you to be able to start making plans to move, etc. because it's a long process getting ready for school. As it gets closer to beginning of school, they will "rank" people that are "likely" to get in and send them info packets so that the can get started with paperwork, etc.

Being number 14 at this point is pretty good because allopathic students still can hold multiple spots until May. A bunch of folks will get "real" acceptances soon.

TIYL, you live close to me now, if you want you can move some of your stuff with ours. We're moving a whole house full of stuff, a box or two of books won't make any difference to me. That or package them up in a box and ship them to yourself 'media mail' thru USPS right before you leave.

Hey, you're a bunny person you'd apreciate this... I just went outside to put some flyers in our for sale sign, and found a nest of bunnies in our front planter. There are about 5 baby bunnies that I can see from my front window. So cute!

Hey Amanda... How did your interview go yesterday?? I was thinking about it and you probably didn't get to see a PBL session, but I still hope that you loved the school and everything went well for you!

Hey! Thanks for thinkin' of me. I think it went well. Supposedly I find out Monday if I'm on the accepted, alternate, or rejection list. I'm so anxious! They asked me some really tough interview questions, but hopefully I did alright. We didn't get to see a PBL session, but we did get to talk to some first year students. During the OMM demonstration I got my neck cracked and my rib cage manipulated, and I swear I am breathing better than I have in a while! LoL. I'll have to let you know what I find out on Monday. Keep your fingers crossed for me!😀😀

I hope you hear good news Amanda. Keep us posted!🙂

SDSASEN-- did you ever get in touch with June? I think if she called you, she'd remember... my gut says you're in. 👍

Good luck Amanda! Wow, Monday is pretty quick-- although I know it will seem like an eternity to you! :luck: :luck:

Yes - June returned my call.

There is a high probability that I'll be attending LECOM-B this fall. June explained to me that I was indeed number 14 (actually number 12 now) on the "alternate list" but, based on her experience at LECOM-B that is close enough to say that I'm "definitely accepted." They are just waiting for people to relinquish seats and for deposit deadlines to expire before sending out admissions packets to those currently ranked on the "alternate list." So at this point I'm somewhere between an unconditional acceptance and the waitlist...pre-med purgatory?

I was just quite freaked out when I heard the words "alternate list." To me the phrase "definitely accepted" is not congruent with the fact that I'm on the "alternate list."

All-in-all I'm happy that I know what exactly is going on at the admissions office - I have been waiting almost a month for my admissions packet, and now I know why... June also said that she would be updating me via email every few days because spots are starting to open up rather quickly.

Definitely hoping you get in.

I've been on other interviews where people have been waitlisted at LECOM-B. Usually those same people have a negative view on LECOM-B's curriculum (and often haven't been accepted anywhere else). 👎 Not sure I would want to go to school with them anyway.

SDSASEN You seem like LECOM B is the place for you so I hope to see ya in the fall. 🙂

We need to have CPR first aid prior to martriculation, correct?

Good Luck Amanda!

Hmmmmm, I didn't see that in any of our paperwork. Mine is expired, so I hope not! I think that we do ACLS somewhere before we actually see patients.
