Thanks, everyone! It feels so good to be able to officially celebrate this year with you guys! And yes, I hope the list keeps moving fast so we all can start in the fall together! 😀
 
I think I'm most excited for the dates between July 18 and July 30. July 31 will be a tad bit scary, but fun as well. Hrm..

Aww thanks guys! I think that we found a house out there! The husband is going to check it out on Tues, and we'll either be moving out ther June 16 or June 30 depending on how quickly we can pack our stuff, and I can finish my Biochem class.

also.. since we are only allowed to take out 40500 at a time with federal stafford and then an additional 8500 or something..

the school told us when i was there that we just click "yes" when they give us our package for the full amount we are allowed (above say around 57000).. so how does that additional money come into play? do we have to apply for that seprately or does the school financial aid do it for us? anyone know how it is done?? thanks. loans are a big concern for me.

Per LECOM's website, this is the most recent info. I was told we would be getting financial aid info around the beginning of June. I'm pretty sure the difference between the total cost of attendance and what the max through stafford loans can be made up through Graduate Plus loans or through a private lender. As far as how this happens, maybe one of our upperclassmates can answer this... or we can wait until we get our financial aid info.

Once you get the email for your award, you'll be given the portal address and log in there. You'll get to accept the amounts (or lower them if you wish) and then pick a lender from a list they have, or you can pick one of your own. If you pick one from the list, you click on their website and fill out the master promissory note for Stafford loans. You'll have to go back and click the tab up top for GradPlus loans, pick another (usually the same) lender, and fill out another master promissory note or GradPlus. It's really pretty simple. You just have to wait until they send you the email.

I don't know about you guys, but I think it's FINALLY starting to hit me that we are starting medical school in 2 months! How exciting and scary all at the same time! 😱 😀

On another note, to current students:

I am at the point of having night terrors at the thought of the first 11 weeks of anatomy. My terrors involve me, being booted out of school because I am unable to memorize ever last nerve, tendon, vein, muscle and bone in 11 weeks....normally the dream involves the clowns coming down from the walls picking me up and throwing me into a gerbil wheel which they push into the gulf of mexico.....but I digress....

any tips of the trade from the veterans to help succeed in those first few weeks (background: I have no NO, anatomy background)

Not sure about specific advice, but as far as encouragement.... I didn't have any real anatomy background either and did well in the class.

Right now it'll probably seem an impossible task, and even in the middle of it a lot of people will probably be hating life but you'll get through. And then once you get through and are knee deep in PBL you may actually miss anatomy..... so a lot of it is just perspective.

But I agree. If you're just staring at Netter's atlas thinking of having to memorize everything you will get overwhelmed. And if helps at all, I am absolutely HORRIBLE at plain memorization. I need to see the "big picture" and learn things in context with their function and how they fit with other things. So having the text to read through helps with that.

But really, once you jump in and get going you just seem to adapt. For the most part the lectures/powerpoints are pretty good and give you a good idea of what the important bits and pieces are. The text reading will then reinforce that and add in some other details that couldn't be covered in lecture, and the lab "assignments" will further reinforce it.

The lab assignments may get annoying at times but take the time to go through them and look up the info/answers instead of just getting the answer from someone else. I also found it helpful to work through the labs with one or two other people. Eventually you'll probably settle into having a few other people you study/review with and it does help to go through things with someone else.

Not sure if any of that is too general or not, but I also had no idea what it was going to be like at first. The same advice applies for PBL, but just try and stay on top of the material. Look over the powerpoints the night before the lectures, review them after the lecture. Use atlases like Netter and Rohen's to clarify relationships with other structures visually.

I think the whole thing is just hard to imagine right now, I am full of such a combo of excitment, fear, disbelief, gratitude, ect.....I think things will start feeling more, 'real' once I have actually moved out there and am getting things ready
 
this is off topic, but i was wondering what hospitals in the sarasota/bradenton area lecom students rotate at for 3rd and 4th year rotations. i am from the area and am just curious.

That's how it was for me. I had probably half a dozen good friends who were either just done with, or at various stages of med school and they all said the typical things to me about it's like "trying to drink from a firehose", "not hard/difficult, just a lot of material", yadda yadda yadda.... but I still really didn't understand until I was in the middle of it.

But ya'll will do fine. At any point feel free to hit us up with any questions or concerns. Once you start I know a lot of us have gathered together various outside resources, notes, study guides, etc.... so as you go along don't be afraid to ask one of us. I was in the same boat and I know we made good use of picking the brains of the class in front of us and that helped a lot.

I've been reading some old posts about laptop/notebook recommendations. The tablets seems to be loved by those who use them but perhaps not particularly useful for our curriculum after anatomy. I am 100% a windows guy, I know digitlnoize said he never could get used to the close button being on the left side of the top screen, etc. etc.

I was considering buying a MacBook, the black one with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and probably upgrading it to 4GB of RAM. Here's the catch, LECOM-B is not Mac friendly and I don't like OS X compared to windows operating systems. I was considering buying the MacBook and running Windows Vista on it. Any thoughts? Opinions?

P.S. 25th post upgrades me from "Junior Member" to "Member" on SDN, sweet.
 
Not sure what would make them not "mac friendly" here. Only possible reason is if the computer guys on campus are not as familiar with macs as with PCs. Though I've never had to go see them anyway.

If the computer has wireless internet, can access an FTP folder (or shared network folder), and can view powerpoint and other documents it'll be just fine.
 
"Not mac friendly", according to what we were told in the interview, just means that the computer guys aren't familiar with macs at all. They told us that LECOM-B will fix any laptop issues you may have for free, but if you have a mac, they can't help you because the ITs don't know anything about macs. You can still have one, you can access everything, but if it breaks, you have to take it somewhere else and pay for it. Personally, I think they should hire my fiance to be the Mac-man. That would solve a lot of people's problems. 😀

I wouldn't worry too much about anatomy. I had no anatomy background myself either (like most of our class) and in retrospect, it wasn't too bad. At the time it was pretty heavy, but doable. I don't think I really began to "get anatomy" until PBL kicked in anyway.
Just like nlax said- spend as much time as you can getting the big picture. If you can understand how structure and function are interrelated as you go through different parts, it'll help tremendously. The labs tend to get really boring, but use that lab time to match up what you are reading to the cadavers and it'll stick much better. Being able to identify parts on an actual person is easier and more important than pictures, since you have context.

About computers- whatever you are comfortable with should be fine. After anatomy, the computer becomes pretty limited for school work. The computer guys aren't big fans of Macs or Windows Vista, but very few people have to go see them anyway. I would just recommend a laptop that is light-weight. I've got a 17inch screen that looks nice, but sometimes I wish I didn't have to lug it around with my books (although my arms are looking great now!)

For the rest of you still looking for a place, I went by a student's house today to buy some books, and she lives at "The Village." She said they're condos but many of them are being rented. From what I saw, they're modern and in a very nice area, close to grocery stores and restaurants. It's off of exit 213, but you can take Lakewood Ranch as a a backstreet, I passed the school in less than 10 minutes (althought it was the afternoon, I can't speak for the morning rush). Hope this helps someone!
 
Just got another "no change in status" alternate email, saying:

"All alternate files are in the process of being reviewed by the LECOM Bradenton Admissions Committee. This is a slow process in order for the Committee to review the entire files with all added materials."
 
Me too. Ugh. Anyone know how long the review normally takes?
 
I heard that the land where LECOM is built was an old indian cemetery and some people from the maintenance crew claim that they have heard weird cries for mercy coming from the group rooms on the third floor.... sorry...this is not true, just trying to open up some spots for me and my homies on the waiting list...sorry guys...I tried.

Yeah, and LauraDO too! Lots of hotties actually (another Amanda, Stephanie, Dr Midlife when she gets in!) It's a requirement for LECOM-B (don't know how I got in though - I did send pics of my kids on the beach, so maybe cute kids substitute for that requirement)
 
Hrm.. this is an interesting thought. I'm wondering now how many single men/women we have in our class. Also, I would say there are at least 4 other pretty girls that you all are not mentioning (names removed since I don't know if they post on this thread). It seems that this "hot or not" theory does seem to work.

I will follow Kate, however, and say that I don't know how I was admitted under this assumption.

Maybe "in the process of being reviewed" does not = no change in status?! This is what I'm hoping, anyway. Wait until next week when you get, "Dr. MidLife, you're alternate #1 on our new and snazzy list!"

...and yes, they'll address you by your SDN name because it's cooler that way.
