LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, no problem. That is what we're here for. Keep asking questions, please. It keeps my mind off of the schoolwork that I want to forget about for a little while longer.

By the way, the offer is still up in the air for any applicants who want to hang out with people prior to their interview or the day after (depending on tests and whatnot). Just make sure you post here or PM me.

Hey everyone! Hope everyone is doing great in school, rocking interviews, and enjoying the fall. I had a quick question. I was wondering what the second year schedule looked like, particularly the second semester? When do classes wrap up?
The reason I ask is because I am curious as to how much time you are given to study for the boards.
Also, what type of board prep do they offer? I had heard at my interview that they bring in different lectures who write questions for the board...but that is about all the details I heard.
Thanks in advance for any insight! 🙂

When I went through it, we started exams in med April and board review the last of April. Board review is a thing in progress as it has changed a little each year. They survey the class afterwards and solicit advice for changes. For me, they bought a couple of review books for us, they spent a week with some professors from the school and a week with a really great guy from Kaplan. All the while, you have to take some long, long diagnostic and board practice exams to find out what you are deficient in and get you used to the testing process. They originally used all Kaplan instructors but ended up having to schedule sessions on the weekends. This way, everything is done Mondsay thru Friday-- weekends off. There was another week of required board review for those who had averages below 75. Note, if your average was above 75 you didn't have to attend at all, you could just spend the month studying on your own. People started scheduling COMLEX and USMLE toward the end of board review or right after. I went to 2 weeks of review, studied for 6 more days on my own, then took COMLEX. The next day I went to Las Vegas for a week, then came back and moved with my roommates to the Orlando area for clinicals to begin June 2nd. You have lots of time to study. Few schools I've found give you this much time. Note also that you are not required to schedule your boards at a particular time, but you are encouraged to do so soon after board review. If you fail the boards, you will be pulled off of rotations until you pass.

Keep in mind that they are still finalizing what will happen for board review for the class of 2011. Everything is subject to change, but since scores have been so good the last few years it's just minor tweeking for the most part.

Hey everyone,

Thanks to all of the current students who are posting here. Your insight is very helpful!

I am interviewing tomorrow and was wondering if there was anyone else on here who will be as well?

Also, the only piece missing from my file is my DO letter. I know others have been finding out their status within a couple of weeks of their interview but will mine be put on hold until that letter gets there or will I be able to get some answer?

Thanks! I hope to see some of you tomorrow 🙂

I am pretty sure that they will not send your file to the adcom for a decision until they have your letter. I had one missing when I interviewed and that is what they told me.

For those of you who have interviewed or been accepted I was wondering if you could help me out. I am nervous that I am applying a bit late in the process (Just submitted my AACOMAS this past week 🙁 ). I am from South Carolina and was looking LECOM-Bradenton as one of my choice schools. I graduated from WOfford College with a BS in biology and neurouscience. I have a 3.77 non sci GPA, 3.25 sci GPA (C in organic really hurt me) and a 3.49 cumm GPA with a 27T MCAT. I have good volunteer ECs, 200 hours in SPartanburg regional healthcare, 3 major research projects one at the genomics institue at Clemson University, and work now full in the ER back home as a multi skilled tech with a bunch of DOs. I have a LOR from a DO at work, 2 from research mentors, and my committee eval. I am nervous about where I stand considering I wont be getting everything in until probably mid to late November. What do you think my chances of acceptance this year could be from those of you who have already been there? Thanks for your help

dcwildcat05, when i interviewed i didnt have my DO letter in yet and they just put it on hold until they got the letter and a week later i got a call telling me i was in. so just send in your letter asap.

tj0511, i think you still have good chances you grades and work looks great. it just depends on the spots they have. one guy in our class was accept a week before class started so i guess you'll be fine.

What are my chances since I've heard nothing: 29 MCAT, 3.9 sci gpa, 3.75 overall; submitted secondary over a month ago, research, shadowing, volunteering; all the standard stuff and then some, good LORs including DO letter. But why have I heard nothing???? 🙁

Have you called or emailed to check your status? I would.

I'll say this much: your stats are better than mine were. Not by alot, but better. And I was accepted by around this time last year...

Email or call and ask. They're nice!

I am interviewing Nov 10! Anyone else interviewing that day? Also, for those of you who've been accepted, how long after your interview did you get accepted? Bradenton is one of my first choices and I'd love to get an acceptance early so I didn't have to spend the money to travel to other interviews.

Anyone interviewing on Nov 10th? I'm using the fact that I have to fly down for the interview as an excuse to spend the weekend at the Epcot Food & Wine Festival 😀

Reading this thread has me really excited to see the school! I love the idea of PBL and it's encouraging that people seem so happy at LECOM-B.

I will be there on the 10th! Food and wine festival sounds awesome. I wish I had the funds to join you.

See you on the 10th.

I was in the same boat. I had 2 other interviews scheduled about 1.5 weeks after my interview. For me, I interviewed early in the week (monday, I think). The adcom met on Wed. I called and had my answer on Thursday, so I didn't have to fly the next Monday.

Most people usually hear within a week or two, I believe.

Hey guys, I've been lurking around these threads for a little while to gain some insight into LECOM-B and I have just gotten accepted! It was my first interview and first acceptance so I'm really excited but, I'm still interested in some other institutions as well. So, I wanted to know if LECOM-B offers sufficient opportunities for effective rotations in some of the more competitive specialties including dermatology, ophthalmology, radiology and anesthesiology. Also, does anyone know of a complete match list for their students? And thanks to all of you who have posted, especially those current LECOM-B students, as it has provided valuable info for determining which school I hope to attend. Good luck to the rest of the applicants!

Below is a link to the closest thing that exists to a complete match list. Keep in mind that this is the 1st LECOM-B Class to graduate and go through the match. Their board scores were also kinda meh (as a class). The following class (the one matching this year) blew them and everyone else out of the water in terms of board scores, so I'm excited to see what they can do!

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=6421171&postcount=25

If this 1st class with the lower board scores did this well...then I'm happy! The match list looks really good.

As far as the ROAD specialties go...I know that there actually quite a few DO derm residencies in Florida. There are quite a few residencies in St. Pete (both DO and MD). I've found that DO acceptance is largely regional. In Virginia, you hardly ever hear of DO's, but Florida has a pretty heavy DO population and when you see say, an ad for a hospital anesthesia job, it says: "MDs and DOs: Would you like to make LOTS of money?"

You can also look at local residencies and see which ones are DO friendly. So-called "DO discrimination" is widely touted on SDN, but is far less common in the real world.

Does it occur? Yes. The same way that racism occurs. In a small, idiotic percentage of the population. The current (and impending-ly worse) physician shortage means that the presence of DOs in the workforce will be widely appreciated.

Also, the growth and acceptance of the DO profession is both a blessing and a curse. DOs are around 10% of practicing physicians. However, DO STUDENTS are now around 25% of US medical students. This means that when we graduate, our presence will be palpable. Unfortunately, it also means that residencies (MD and DO) will likely only get more competetive, since residency growth has not kept pace with medical school growth.

Sorry if I'm rambling, but it's important if you're considering a "hard" specialty. Also, keep in mind that things can change ALOT between now and the time you apply to match. Radiology used to be the easiest specialty to get into, once upon a time. Now that salaries are so inflated, everyone and their mother wants to be a radiologist. If and when specialty salaries decrease, I think you'll see a sharp decline in people wanting to do Rads.

Rads is in a little trouble due to outsourcing overseas, cost cutting, etc. Everyone and their mother knows that radiologists make a LOT of money, and you can bet that when the US Gov't Hatchet falls, it'll fall on them very early on.

I also think Derm is on the way down. If you take a look around, you'll find more and more Family docs, Nurse practitioners, etc trying to steal a piece of the derm pie. So far, they've kept themselves inflated due by restraining the supply of new dermatologists by not opening many residencies. Unfortunately I think this strategy may backfire. If you can't get an appt with a Dermatologist, what are you going to do? You're going to go see that Family doc who says he does derm too. Now, he's not a "dermatologist" but he probably took a bunch of CE classes and practically is.

People like to say that Anesthesia is in trouble b/c of nurse anesthetists, but I don't think so. That might be more of a problem in big cities, but in most places in the US, it's not a big deal. If anything they make docs lives easier. See the SDN 20 questions for more on that.

I don't know much about Ophtho, so I'll leave that alone. They're kinda below the radar, so they'll probably be ok.

Bottom line, do what makes you happy. I know alot of people who got into rotations and realized that they were completely wrong about their choices.
I am really interested in rads, but I am finding that I like physiology and biochem ALOT more than anatomy. It's making me think more about Anesthesia, ER, IM, etc. I still like Rads because I'm a techno geek, but other stuff might be more up my alley, so keep your mind open.

Ok. I'll shut up now. I have to go to PBL. 😎

So, I wanted to know if LECOM-B offers sufficient opportunities for effective rotations in some of the more competitive specialties including dermatology, ophthalmology, radiology and anesthesiology.

Well, it kind of depends on what you mean by asking if they offer "sufficient opportunities". None of those are really considered "core" rotations so you would normally do those on one of your elective slots (~2 electives 3nd year, 3 your 4th year, not including core selectives where there are a few limitations.)

So....like for any other elective, you can do these with/wherever you want. If you want to do a Optho rotation with some prestigious group and they agree to take you as a student for that month then you're pretty much set.

Hopefully I'm at least understanding some of what your question was asking. Like you probably already know there is no large teaching hospital directly affiliated with the school so there's not going to be a set Optho/Rads/Anesth rotation that they send you to.

I just want to congratulate my friend for getting an interview at LECOM-B!!
in the rare case she comes onto SDN and sees this post that is 🙄

awww thank you mrmatto'glesby!! im VERY excited to be interviewing at LECOM!! 😀 congratulations to you as well for your several acceptances and upcoming interviews!!!

Thanks digi and nlax. My post may have wrongly reflected that I'm only interested in the "money-making" specialties but, the fact of the matter is I have no clue what specialty I may want to go into (or if I even want to specialize) and I am definitely keeping my mind open to areas that may earn my interest. I simply wanted to know if I were to become interested in some of these specialties would I have a legitimate opportunity to pursue them. I also figured if they offer opportunities in these areas then chances are good they offer plenty of opportunities in the more common rotations. You both provided very helpful info and I appreciate the abundant insight to some of these specialties digi, I agree with much of your outlook in these medical arenas. I was pleasantly surprised by LECOM-B and PBL was impressive to say the least, so I look forward to possibly joining the rest of the student body next year!

Can any of the current students give me a breakdown of the typical class schedule for the first two years?
i.e. times and days of the week for PBL, OMT, etc.

I understand the first 10 weeks (having anatomy) is a little bit different compared to the rest of the year.

No problem. I wasn't trying to imply that you were a greedy @$$**** either, so it's all good!

I'm largely interested in those specialties (well, Rads and Gas at least) because they have qualities in common besides the money. I've never made more than 30k a year, so any doc salary is awesome to me. But, I think they share certain things in common (schedule, technology, etc). I have a family though, so that kinda stuff is a little more important to me. In other words, I've ruled out Surgery! 😀

I understand the first 10 weeks (having anatomy) is a little bit different compared to the rest of the year.

The first two weeks of school or so are mostly orientation with a couple anatomy lectures sprinkled in. This serves as a nice intro without freaking you out too much.

Once anatomy is going full steam, you have those lectures and lab MWF. Lectures from 8 or 9 - 12 until PBL start, then anatomy starts at 10. Lunch from 12-1. Lab from 1-3 or 3-5 (depending on your "group".

Tuesday is Anatomy, Clinical Exam, and OMM lecture. Anatomy from 10-11, OMM from 11-12, lunch from 12-1, CE from 1-2. You're usually done Tuesday at this point.

Thursday is OMM lab. 1-3 or 3-5 again.

PBL starts after a few weeks too. Once a week during anatomy for two hours. Can be any morning depending on your group.

After a month or so, there are some Clinical Exam "skills sessions" where you meet in small groups (4 or so) with a doctor and they teach you how to do take a history. Then you have "skills sessions" where you go see Standardized Patients and practice. These are scheduled randomly with a week or two notice, due to the craziness of SP's and students' schedules. Kinda sucks, but that's how it is. The sessions are pretty helpful though, although it is kinda of a pain during anatomy.

Once anatomy ends (WOO HOO!) you start PBL 3 days a week for 2 hours a day. For example, I have mine on Thursday from 1-3 or 3-5, depending on the week. Things really start moving at this point. Read alot and keep up. It's still WAY better than anatomy. Slightly more free time. You'll still have OMM and CE on Tuesday and OMM lab on Thursday. Little change there.

I should point out that the Lab (anatomy and OMM) and PBL times alternate from week to week. So, if you had the early lab time this week, you'll probably have the late time next week. Keeps it fair.

It seems complicated, but they give you a calendar that has all this on it, so I just look at that and see where I'm supposed to be when.

I think it pretty much continues this way until the end of second year. I know that there are "mini-courses" at the beginning of each semester (nutrition, human sexuality, medical jurisprudence, etc). These used to be scattered throughout the year, but there's pretty much universal agreement that cramming them in at the beginning is better. It's still not anatomy!

Hope that helps a little, sorry if it's confusing. Just read through it again and you'll get it!

Yeah I Interviewed and was accepted. I wasn't putting down PBL as this is how I learned all through college. My roommate and I just thought about it one day because we made about 10% of our lectures throughout the years and just studied from lecture notes, books, etc. So in a sense i was PBLing myself already if that makes any sense. I love skipping lecture

Hi!! When you get interviewed, how long does it take for them to let you know whether you got accepted, denied, or put on the alternate list?? You said that you got interviewed and accepted. Do they let you know right away after the interview what the outcome was??? Also, what do they ask you during the interview?

Please answer!! 🙂

It's not right away. Most people find out in a week or two. If the timing is right, it can be sooner, but regardless, they're pretty fast.

Did you have to call them to know whether you got accepted or not?? Don't they call you or email you?? I'm just curious!!😉

I think they snail mail most people. I did call them, but only because I had extenuating circumstances and asked for permission ahead of time. I had two interviews scheduled (LECOM-E and NOVA) and didn't want to spend the money on plane tickets if I didn't have to. If I hadn't called, I never would have found out in time...

I am afraid that I am applying a little too late. I sent my AACOMAS application last week, and have not received my secondary applicstion from LECOM-B yet. AACOMAS tells me that it can take up to 2 months before LECOM receives my primary application. Because I know that time is not on my side, I wanted to ask you if there is something I can do to speed up the process. Please help, I'm going insane!!!! 😱

I don't think there's much you can do. I would email or call LECOM occasionally to check on your status. Don't go overboard though. I have a friend in the class whose LECOM-B application was complete AT THE DEADLINE. She still got in.

You're not exactly early, but there's still time. I would expect that you'll get your secondary in the next week or two. I think most people get their pretty fast. If you haven't gotten that by say, the 2nd week of November, I'd email and make sure everything is going ok with your app processing.

Hey I'm really excited about applying to LECOM-B. The more I read the more I want to go. I submitted my AACOMAS about 5 weeks ago and its still processing. LECOM said to call in 2 weeks if I still haven't gotten my supplemental. SciGPA 3.6 CumGPA 3.6 MCAT 29M Reading other posts i feel like I have a good shot. Anyone have an idea of how many spots there still are or what my chances are like?

Your stats seem fine. Again, better than mine were, but I applied a few weeks earlier...

No idea how many spots are left. I think it was discussed a page or two (or three) ago in this thread though...but that's just a rumor.

People are getting placed on the Alternate List, but it's not because the slots are full. More likely, the adcom liked them, but wanted to see if they'd get someone they'd like better...or something...who knows.

Just stay in contact with the admissions office, and they'll take care of you. If you don't get your secondary by when they said, then do what they said...Again, I have friends that were accepted even though they applied on the last day possible, so it is...possible. Not that I recommend it.

I'm sure there are plenty of slots left. Interviews go until next April, so the process is only about half way done.

Just found out I got in. I finished my app on a saturday. Called in for interview the following tuesday. Interview was that friday. I'm assuming the letter arrived the following friday, but it was sent via snail mail to my home address - not school address. Either way. I'm in.

The interview was only about 30 minutes. PhD, anatomy professor and MD, MBA, MPH. Closed file, but they asked me specifics about my transcripts - told them.

The PBL was very impressive. Watched a 2-hour session with no conclusion(it was a long case).

Building is beautiful. The area is a little underdeveloped but not as bad as driving east of Bradenton. If you're from the city - Starbucks are few but not hard to find.

Looking at the COMLEX numbers for this school and the campus/curriculum I'd reccomend it.

I think we had one of the same guys. I commented on his huge list of degrees and how it must be tiring to sign off with all those letters.

Re: Development

The area is actually pretty heavily developed, just not within visual distance of the school. If you drive a couple miles north or south on Lakewood Ranch Blvd, you'll find tons of awesome shopping, restaurants, bars, etc.

There's 2 Super Walmarts, 1 Super Target, 3 Publix's. Applebees, Chiles, Linkster's Pub, Best Buy, Circuit City, Ruby Tuesdays, Country Pancake House (which is fraking awesome), a couple sushi places, chinese, Quiznos, A few Subways, a bunch of Italian/NewYork Pizza joints, Five Guys Burgers, MonkeyPaws Coffee and Ice Cream, and a crap load of other stuff I'm in too much of a hurry to list.

It's faaaaar from underdeveloped. They're currently building something or another across from the school. Word is it's a neighborhood that will include shopping and more restaurants.

How terrific are your numbers or something that you got such a quick turnaround time? I've never heard anything like it.

I've been accepted!! 🙂 and I am curious about clinical rotation sites. I received the list in my interview packet of the rotation sites which is great, but I was wondering if I could request hospitals or places that are not listed or not already affiliated with LECOM? Is it possible that I can work with LECOM to get other sites affiliated if I wanted to do some rotations in a certain geographic area? Would it help if there was another osteopathic medical school in the area that I would be interested in that already has affiliations? Thanks!

When did you interview Jen? I interviewed on Monday and reallllyyyyyyy want to call and see if I got in!

I interviewed Friday, October 17th. The adcom meets every Tuesday and letters are sent out by Friday. I got my letter on Saturday 10/25 so sometimes they mail them out sooner. You def should have your letter on Saturday or Monday I'd say. I think they said not to call though unless you have a specific circumstance where you need to know. I know it sucks to wait but don't worry!! You'll get your letter soon!

I think someone already addressed before, but from what I know, you can work with the school to do some rotations in other places and I dont think it matters if theres another osteopathic medical school. If you can get a doctor to from that area to do it and accept another student or two the school will work with the doctor to make something happen.

Congratulations jen! That is when I interviewed as well and I got in too! Were you the one that was from Bradenton? I was the one from Tampa that graduated from USF, Brad. Do you plan on attending LECOM-B for sure? I'm also interested in trying to get other viable affiliations with the school (if I decide to go there)...did you have any locations already in mind?

Congrats, too!!! Yep, I'm the Bradentonite. I PMed you

congrats Jen and Boniell. I interviewed the same day as you guys but my DO letter didnt get sent in until the next tuesday so I had to wait until this week for them to review my file (stupid pre-med director). Im also from Oklahoma so it'll prob take a few extra days for the letter to get here, so Ill prob be waiting until early next week to get a letter. Fingers crossed that its a nice letter, congrats on getting in. Is this the first choice for both of you?

So, do they invite for interviews without a DO letter? I just shadowed a DO this week so I will be getting the letter next week. School has my MD letter already.

The Econo Lodge on 64 isn't too bad and it's pretty cheap. I stayed at the Hampton when I was here though. But, I have stayed at that econo lodge too...

Well, I got in! I'm very excited as this was my first choice by far!

As for interview lodging I found a Knights Inn about 1.5mi from the Sarasota/Bradenton airport. Nothing fancy, but it was clean with a king sized bed. I think I paid $56/night. I rented a car from budget for $55/day too and you can just pick it up at the airport. There are counters for about 6-7 car rental agencies right there. If I were you I would just show up and go down the line of car rental places until you get the best deal. If you drive around there are plenty of hotels to check out. Just bring a GPS or rent one with the car.

Do any of the hotels offer shuttle service between the airport and hotel; and the hotel and Bradenton?

How much is a cab from the airport to the school?

How far is the school from the Tampa airport?
