LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2008-2009

Do any of the hotels offer shuttle service between the airport and hotel; and the hotel and Bradenton?

How much is a cab from the airport to the school?

One of the guys who interviewed at the same time as me said he had paid ~$45 for a taxi from the airport to the hotel and another $40 to the school for interview day. I gave him a ride back to the airport (SRQ) so he saved the next $40 he would have had to spend. He had stayed somewhere in the Bradenton area so I think that may have been a decent estimate of what taxis cost. Meanwhile - I spent $37 for a rental.

If at all possible, rent. If not, I think the Hampton has a shuttle, but I'm not positive. The interview e-mail had some info about shuttles.

I stayed at the Hampton Inn. It was a bit more than the Econo - about $95 for the night, but it was a nice hotel with a free hot breakfast buffet.

Thanks, anyone have info from the e-mail? I got a phone message. Should I believe it's real?

What rental company did you use?

You'd probably have to call and ask about the under 25 thing. I am 25, but it didn't even come up (unless they just looked at it from my drivers license). Like I said, there were about 6-7 car rental desks all lined up in the airport, so you have plenty of options. Just try to rent one when you get there and if they won't do it you could get a taxi. If not, I would fly into the Sarasota/Bradenton airport if at all possible to save on taxi costs. It is about 20 mins from the school and there are hotels within 1-2 miles.

Hey guys. I got a couple of PMs that I will answer Thursday evening/Friday morning. We have a big PBL test tomorrow at 8:00 AM that demands my attention, but I promise I'll get back to you guys when its over. Also, if anyone has an interview today (Wednesday) you will see me during that interview in the PBL group you watch. Digitlnoize, too. Lastly, if you interview on Friday, I know that two of you will be in my PBL group watching and observing, so.. yeah. I gotta run. Study time is running out!

Good luck everyone!

I just checked my status and it says "Your file wil be re-reviewed by the admissions committee in late November." I just submitted my secondary two weeks ago. Any ideas as to what this means?? 😕 😕

Someone please post the cheap rentals you utilized. Internet searches quote more than you guys are saying.

I got the same status page.
it means that they looked at your file, were shaky about giving you an interview and will look at you again later.

Knights Inn near the sarasota/bradenton airport was like $56. Budget rental car was $55/day. I use hotel-guides.us for hotels and rental is just the various websites.

I used enterprise back in September and got the smallest, cheapest car they had - cost me ~$37.

I think I also used Enterprise...but shop around, it changes from time to time.

I used Orbitz to book my flight, hotel and rental car. The hotel (Comfort Inn) and car (Budget) ended up costing me around $100 over the price of the plane ticket by itself. When I landed in Bradenton, I was able to upgrade my Aveo to a Mustang for 6$.

Did anyone interview on Wednesday? I am wondering how you guys felt about our impromptu PBL session we held for you guys...anyone?

Quick question?? I've had my secondary app in at Bradenton for a couple of weeks now. When I check the website, I get a message that says my application has been submitted to admissions and they will let me know of any changes.......how long is adequate to wait before calling??

I'm eager to hear something but don't want to be overly aggressive

Mine have been like that since early september..

Me too.. I had mine in the first week of September and I haven't heard anything at all..

how long does it take to get a secondary once you have been verified and the aacomas has been sent out and such? its only been a few days but i'm impatient

Heyyy yes I was there!! Thank you so much for putting that together during exam week - the day before your exam! It was really great and you all worked well together, especially considering this wasn't your usual group. I really like the PBL approach. I definitely hope to get in here. I loved the school and honestly I went on the interview just thinking I should go on every interview, and I ended up falling in love with it. Thanks again for the "PBL session."

Sweet. I'm glad you liked it. Honestly, we all agreed that the review of that case helped us for the test too. We're all friends and we've been talking about what it would be like to be in a PBL group together since school began...now we know. It was alot of fun!

I think that although it wasn't quite like a real session, it gave a very good impression of the process. It doesn't move that fast in real life. Today, for example, we started a new case and only got through 6 pages (patient pages, not book pages) of stuff. We made it to page 13 during your interview, to put it in perspective.

Glad you liked the school. I had the same feeling when I came. Loved it and I'm REALLY glad I wound up here, and not any of the other schools I applied to.

Yes I loved the school... and the tuition is fabulous, even for an out-of-stater like me, and housing is so cheap, too... at least compared to where I am. I'm from Long Island and apartments near NYCOM are often close to $2K (one bedrooms!) so this was a pleasant surprise. I really love the school so I am definitely hoping to get in. I think it would also be nice to live down south for a few years since I've lived in the northeast my entire life. Thank you again for your PBL session!!

What is the OOS tuition and what's the cost of housing? I'm also from the east coast and would love the warm weather.

How long did it take you to get thru to Sarah to schedule the interview? 🙁

Don't quote me on this, but here's rough numbers.

OOS tuition is around $27000 give or take. The total amount they give you per year is around $52k.

Honestly, it's more than enough. Housing here is really cheap. I have a wife and a 7 year old daughter and my loans are covering our rent for our 4 bedroom house with a pool and hot tub, 1 minute from school and all 3 of us.

At least for now. All of my single friends have 1BR apartments and have plenty of cash to eat out and go to Disney World and stuff.

Housing here is very cheap also. Check sarasota.craigslist.org for examples.

What do you mean "they give you?" Is that the maximum loan? is that what everyone gets? Are there scholarships? Aren't we better off taking just what we need and living cheaply and not having any extra loans? 😱😕

The 52k amount is usually the maximum amount that you can borrow for a school year. You can choose to receive less loan money if you choose just like in undergrad. I think LECOM-B is probably going to be my top choice if I get in.😀

What she said.

It's definitely a good idea to borrow as little as possible. We took out the max amount this year because my wife has gotten her license to practice in Florida yet. Hopefully next year we won't need to take out much more than the cost of tuition.

Of course, we're planning on paying most of my loans back by the time I'm finished with residency. We're going to live on her salary and use mine to pay off loans, so they'll be mostly gone by the time we're done. It's nice to have a second income...

Yes, it's a good idea to borrow as little as possible. I taught anatomy and physiology classes 5 nights a week during the first two years and saved myself $25,000 each year. I wouldn't recommend everyone taking this route, though. However, there's no way I can work during 3rd and 4th year, so I have to take out the full amounts now.

OOS tuition is $27,500 and housing is pretty low. I found some nice 1-BR housing for around $800. As far as your other question, Heather Morneau called me to schedule my interview so I'm not sure who Sarah is... I hope that answers your question! 🙂

How can I find roomates for next year? I would like to get a 3 bedroom house with a pool and such. But, of course need some roomates. I don't really want to move in to someone else's home, but want to start from scratch. Any ideas??

Question for LECOM students...

Does the school accept many OOSers?? As I've said, I'm from NY... but I got an interview, feel I did well on it, and have strong LORs. How bad is it that I'm not from near the school? Thanks in advance!!

I got in this year and I'm from NC. Not as far, but still, I don't think it makes any difference. You'll have a great time at the interview too, so just relax. It is very informative and laid back. Plus you can enjoy the awesome weather!

I'm not sure if whether you're in-state vs. out-of-state matters much, if any, into the decision. Usually that's more of an issue for a public school that gets a lot of money from the state. All I know is that there are a LOT of out of state folks here.

When did you interview?

In my class there were students from 34 different states, including Alaska. Only 35% of my classmates were from Florida.

Thanks devlyyn, but I already had my interview and loved it!! I went on the interview with little interest in the school and then fell in love with it and its surroundings once I was there. I love Florida (have been there 16 times and will be going to Disney in May for 10 days 😉) and the school was really fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE NY and always have. But it would be great to move down south for a while and start my life with my new hubby there (getting married the month after my first year).

nlax 30, I interviewed this past Wed., Nov. 5th. Heather Morneau is a sweetheart as were most of the people there that day.

Thanks for all the out-of-state v. in-state input!! It definitely put my mind at ease. My file is being reviewed tomorrow... Wish me luck!

Yeah, I think they try and review the files during the next week and then will make a decision.

Last Wednesday, hmm..... I think I was one of the ones at your lunch Q&A session thingy that day. I was on the end and remember someone talking about NY. Glad you liked the school/area and good luck!

I am also looking for some roommates. I was really interested in the apartments at the Yacht Club at Heritage Harbour. They look gorgeous, are decently priced, pretty close to the school, and I've heard from other students a bunch of them live there. Other students have suggested looking at their student government website but we don't have access to that yet. When do we get an email address/user name to access the schools material?

The SGA site is kinda separate from the school...or something.

Email the webmaster there (aka Dragonwell on here) and tell him you're a newly accepted student. He'll hook you up with login info. There should be a link on the site.

Also, if you're looking for roomates, I would try Facebook, SGA, or even here. I believe there is a housing thread on the main forum page...near the bottom...scroll waaaaaay down.

Yes, they told us our files would be reviewed tomorrow... and I just spoke with them and they received my DO letter today and confirmed that my file would be reviewed tomorrow... thanks for the luck!!

Hahah you were one of the students?? I remember the both of you - but one was next to me (Brian, I think) and if you were at the end, we had a short conversation about juggling married life with being a medical student because I am engaged and you are married. Your tour and Q&A lunch were very helpful. Thanks again. 🙂

I know that I am working on the SGA website, and will start modifying the pages once I've been granted access. I'll keep you all updated on any upcoming events/news from the SGA site.

I stayed at the Econolodge, and I paid ~37 for the night. PS, the pizza delivery was mad expensive though.

I live at the Yacht Club and am very happy here. Lots of students live here, its new and quiet. I would recommend a roommate or two because it is a little pricey, but so is everywhere I suppose. You have to furnish the place yourself too, but I recommend it.

You should be able to access the SGA website after registering an account. I've posted on there before and checked out housing options and am yet to let DragonWell know I'm a current student (if he hasn't figured that out yet). Just use any current e-mail address when you register.

As far as the e-mail address and user name to access the schools material from their official website, you won't be able to do that until the week before orientation week. They have you come to the school and get everything organized just before you start, but trust me you won't need anything until then.

How did you get there from the airport? How about between the hotel and school? Cost? Also I thought the hotel had a microfrige; I'm bringing or buying something cheap to cook, maybe a can of soup!

If I remeber correctly, it does have a microfridge.

PBL DO is right, living at the Yacht Club is a good idea. I have also been here since the start of school and I could not have asked for a better place to stay. It is a bit pricey, but I live with 2 other classmates (I got my roommates through FB) and that has helped to decrease the cost of living (to about $475-$500 per month including cable/internet/gas/electric etc.)

The other advantage about staying at the Yatch Club is that when it comes time to review for anatomy exams and PBL exams, there are several students in the area to go over the topics with you. I know that for anatomy, there were always 6 of us who got together every week to go over anatomy lab slides for the exam. You may not think this is important right now, but it does help out a lot in the end and you don't have to do a lot of driving to find other students.

That's just my two cents, now back to studying PBL!

I guess that I am also in the market for roommates. Do apartments down there go quick because during my undergrad, we had to sign leases by october/november to get a decent apartment

I was wondering the same thing about apartments... it is the same here at my undergrad - where most people have to start signing leases now to get in anywhere popular. I know it is not the same situation as a huge undergrad univ. like WVU, but also wanted to know when one would need to sign a lease at a popular place such as the Yacht Club.

Another question I have for those currently at the Yacht Club...what options are their for cable/satellite and internet there. Also does the rent prices quoted on their site include any utilities. Thanks

I would call the Yacht Club directly for current info. Their specials change very often, and what was true when one of us moved in may not be true now. Also, what's true now may not be true next week or next month...

Don't overlook the joys of house renting either. My 4 BR house is $1495 a month. If you split it 4 ways that's only $373 each. And, you get privacy, your own pool, etc. I've seen stand alone houses going for as low as $1100 for a 3 bedroom.

I also have classmates who are very happy at Colonial Grand and at Las Palmas...all of which seem nice.

I toured about 4-5 different apartments when I went down for my interview. The Yacht club was by far the nicest, and the most expensive. Very nice kitchen and layout, gated, wonderful community areas, close to the school, trash pick-up from your door...etc. But it is about $1200/mo for a 2brm. The cheapest I found of the ones I toured had a special for $700/mo for a 2brm. The best value of the ones I toured was the Colonial Grand at $850/mo for a 2brm. Good layout, 5 miles from the beach, ~18-20min from the school, free cable with HBO. If you have roommates it obviously cuts down on the cost of rent but still, you could save about $400 a month on rent.

Anyway, do your research. Most places do NOT include any utilities.

I get cable and internet through Brighthouse Networks as most if not all do at the Yacht Club. I'm considering dumping it for as little TV as I watch and the fact that I can use some guy's wireless network from nearby. I wouldn't even buy the cable for the first 10 weeks of school anyway, if you are doing what you're supposed to be doing you won't have time for television during anatomy. Still, good customer service if you're wondering. http://tampabay.mybrighthouse.com/default.aspx

The rent prices include no utilities. In addition to rent you pay for water, electricity, trash, and sewer. Trash charge is a flat rate of $15. Water and sewer run me about $10 a piece and electricity ~$40. Everything is covered in your monthly rent check except for electricity, you go through Florida Power and Light Company. www.fpl.com

I interviewed on wed nov 5 and just found out that I'm on the alternate list. Does anyone know my chances of getting excepted? LECOM-B I feel is made for me.😕
