LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do any of you have any thoughts on what my options are of getting into LECOM-B for 2009? I have a 3.45 overall GPA and a 3.27 science GPA. I took the MCAT for the first time in September and I get my results back in about 10 days. So far based on my GPA what do you all think my chances are? I worked at a doctor's office all throughout high school and I've done volunteering as well. Does that help me at all? One more thing, I know the application deadline is April 1st, but it seems that I would still be applying late compared to the majority of applicants. What do you all think? Thank you so much for your help!

Higher stats than me and I got in

But did you have a high MCAT and lots of extracurricular activities?

Not a super high mcat. It was below 30 still....I have lots of ECs, but everyone should. Once you start throwing all the EC stuff in it gets very complicated. You stand a shot with your gpa. We had kids ranging from 3.0 and 23 to 3.9 and 32 in my interview group.

Get your application in ASAP. The longer you wait the harder it will be to get in. The school fills its seats as they find students they feel are best for the PBL program. Your GPA is decent and, depending on your MCAT, you might stand a solid chance.

Just start working on that application right now and submit it immediately after you get your score report.

Good luck!

It's not that late. I didn't get my app in until about this time last year, then my LOR's weren't sent out until Jan. I interviewed here in Feb, and I think that just about everyone from my interview group is at school here now (along with plenty that interviewed after me). Interviews here just started, just get everything in as soon as you are able to, if you havn't submitted you AACOMAS do that asap. You can always add the MCAT on after it is submitted I believe, but that process can take 4-6 weeks. Then, make sure your LOR's are ready to go. Good luck!

If you are applying now you are fairly early. I did not have in my primary applications finished until early february (or late Jan.) My secondary applications were not complete until mid to late Feb. and I was accepted to six schools. (I sent primary apps to ten schools)

I interviewed here in late Feb. or early March. 3 or 4 people from my interview group are now my classmates.
(I interviewed at some schools as late as April 14th).

I think my experience points out something that is often overlooked. While applying early definitely helps your chances, it is more important to fill out your applications in a way that paints you in the best possible way rather than just doing them quickly.

Yea but did the 3.0 and 23 get in? I'm still waiting to hear from them; not sure if they are waiting for my new MCAT score or what; the first was over a 23 but not by much and my gpa is a lot higher. 🙁 Ok, maybe I applied too late.

Well that makes me feel better. I was upset so many people aleady had acceptances. Whereas i got my AACOMAS in early, it took forever to be verified and then i was studying for my MCAT retake. All my LORs have been in weeks ago but I'm just finishing off my secondaries this week. 🙁 Bradenton was just sent in. :scared:

I would be patient. I know we have some students with 23's so it's certainly possible. It's still VERY early in the season. I applied pretty early last year (3.3 overall, 3.8 science, 28 MCAT) and interviewed around the beginning of October. I would imagine that slightly lower MCATs would be a few weeks/months later...

Honestly, applying to med school is very much a crap shoot...just be patient, make sure that your apps are complete and being looked at, and hope for the best!

To everyone...always apply as early as you possibly can. It can't do anything but help.

I have to get back to anatomy (1 week to go!!!) but feel free to PM me if you have any questions...

If you get offered an interview you are on a level playing field as all the others. Once you get to that stage, it is all on you as a person and not your numbers. They have already deemed you academically worthy by that point.

I still haven't heard from either of the LECOM schools and I sent in my secondaries in the first week of September....getting somewhat anxious here.

I would be really surprised if there wasn't a huge backlog of apps at this stage. The AACOMAS opened in mid-May and LECOM-B didn't even start interviewing until mid-September. I would guess that it will take them a little bit of time for them to get through the interviews resulting from those applications.

I interviewed the first and want to go to lecom-bradenton sooo bad. I'm anxious to find out what happens, tomorrow the faculty are supposed to meet and decide who's in. Letters are mailed out friday, but I am to anxious to wait that long... this is my first choice by far! Would it be inappropriate to call on thursday?? or do they call you if you are accepted?? Thanks and congrats to those already accepted!

Yea give them a call, can't affect your app.. worse than can happen is they don't give you an answer.. which could mean you got denied.. therefore I would wait for the letter.. since if they don't give you an answer you will second guess urself and have a horrible weekend

Hey everyone! I haven't really posted much on here and I thought that was odd since I am on this site every single day haha. I might as well start now!

I interviewed on Friday the 3rd and the committee met yesterday and I am so anxious/nervous. Bradenton is my number one school right now even though I really liked Nova. I think PBL is a great fit for me and I loved the school! I can't seem to concentrate on any school work I have this week until I find out if I am accepted our not haha. So I'll keep my fingers crossed and let you all know soon!

Even after acceptances roll in, you won't be able to concentrate. Every time I think I've had my last hoorah with interviews, another one comes in.

Good luck! I hope you get in and that you hear back soon. Keep up your motivation. I know it is hard to do, but work hard and try to have fun while you can.

Have a great day!

Mr. BC is the one of the LECOM-B voices of reason and support. If he wishes good luck, he means it!

Haha! Well thank you, MossPoh. I got distracted this morning and sat at my computer for a bit longer than normal. Today is our last day of Anatomy lectures! Woohoo. Off to class.

Have a great day!

YAY!!!

I am so excited. I called to ask my status , and was accepted!!! LECOM-B was my first choice school! They have been number 1 or 2 the past 3 years on their comlex... campus is great... people were awesome....tons of residency options... PBL!!! and spectacular tuition rates.

Question now is what do I do with all my other interviews? Do I go on them to be polite even though I want to attend school here? It's expensive and I have to pay for all my flights/hotels whereas I could just put my deposit down for my seat...

Please someone give me their opinions

Thanks Guys! Too bad I will probably be even more addicted to this site now and have yet another distraction 😛 haha

I wish that was my greatest problem. Why have I heard nothing? Whereas I admit some of my secondaries are just bering sent in, some were sent in awhile ago and my AACOMAS was sent in June for those who don't require secondaries until you get an interview invite. I am happy for all of you really, but as I see how many are getting accepted I keep thinking there won't be any left for me or some of the others. 🙁

Congrats!! Can you tell me your stats? How long ago did you send in your secondary and when did you interview? I would cancel everything else if this is where you want to go.

I sent in my secondary in September, and interviewed last week.

I had a 3.52 overall gpa, a 3.28 sci gpa, a 23 MCAT.
I've been submitted for publication for stress management in chemotherapy patients, I work at a cancer hospital improving quality of life for chemo patients. I taught PBL in an intro chemistry class at USF, and was also a student in a PBL class. I have like 200 volunteer hours with disabled, and economically disadvantaged inidividuals. I shadowed and recieved a letter of rec from a doctor that graduated from Erie campus. I graduated high school when I was 15 and am sooooooooo excited that I'll be attending LECOM in the fall.

Best of luck... my best advice is just be yourself and wow them!!!

After I got accepted to LECOM, I cancelled all of my other upcoming interviews. However, I did spend a whole year applying to MD schools and I was just sick and tired of the interview process.

I know that Bradenton is where I want to be... I was born in clearwater, I love Florida... I'm just going to put my deposit down and relax, FINALLY. I look forward to meeting you 🙂

I'm in too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got the call this morning 😀

MedSkoolsweetT - i believe we interviewed together on the 1st - congrats on your acceptance!

Thanks so much!. Actually that makes me feel better. Whereas you have a strong PBL background, which I do not, and I'm sure that counted mucho points with admissions, my stats are higher. I also have decent ECs, I think, well-rounded in any case between shadowing, volunteer work, research, leadership, etc. It sounds like the turnaround was quick, at least for you. I just submitted my secondary a week ago so i hope they still have fast turn around.

Congrats!! :clap:Can you also tell me your stats? Sorry if I'm being obnoxious, but you can understand how neurotic we get when we are sitting waiting.

Whereas I admit some of my secondaries are just bering sent in, some were sent in awhile ago and my AACOMAS was sent in June for those who don't require secondaries until you get an interview invite. Are my stats really that bad (I know my MCAT is low but my gpa is good, especially science)? Why have I heard nothing and many of you have multiple multiple acceptances?:scared: I am happy for all of you really, but as I see how many are getting accepted I keep thinking there won't be any left for me or some of the others. 🙁

It'll happen and it'll be a surreal moment. I promise you. My stats aren't stellar. Once you get a couple of interviews, statistics are on your side. So far, the most important thing I've done during interviews is walk in believing I'm already accepted and that I'm talking to them to explain WHY I was. It is subtle, but the confidence and belief it'll happen do wonders. The schools are really weird. I was just offered an interview at my number 1 overall, and I was complete by July 3! My friends that submitted a month after me already interviewed there. Don't take anything to heart and don't let it crack your confidence. The one school I was waitlisted at involved me having more of a "Fine then, you're missing out because I would've made this school even better!" attitude than a self-loathing attitude.

Bradenton had me as complete on 9/5, and I just called and they said my packet is still waiting to go to the committee...go figure.

Thanks, MossPoh! Where were you waitlisted? I can't believe they are sending waitlists already? I thought they did that when their class was full and they are waiting to see if anyone dropped their acceptance, thereby opening another seat. Strange....😕

My app went to committee yesterday would calling tomorrow be too early (I'm fighting the urge to call later today lol) or should I wait till friday?

I was high waitlisted at Touro-CA. Dr. Haight said he prefers us to not be put on the waitlist so early, but they did it anyway. I get the impression it is essentially an acceptance if need be. I also suspect that they were accepting so many people early on that they wanted to control their pace, so I happened to be the lucky one at the bottom of the pile.

It depends on the school with waitlists. It is advantageous to apply early because the class has 150 or so empty seats. Its like when you have 150 dollars...you spend like crazy but when it gets to 20 dollars you begin to hesitate a little more. Some schools are different than that. I honestly didn't care that much because we had to pay a big deposit within 2 weeks if we wanted to go there, and I wasn't that into the school.

Mine went yesterday as well and they called me this morning. I had asked them to let me know as I had another interview scheduled for Monday the 13th I had wanted to cancel if I got in.

No problem I understand... had a 3.51 overall, 3.4 science 25 MCAT with some decent ECs .. several undergrad organizations, shadowing, hospital volunteer, cardiac rehabilitation internship, high school football coach volunteer

Thanks so much!!! I think what is hurting me is retaking the MCAT; it delayed my apps but based on what everyone is telling me my stats are certainly in the ballpark.

Wow! But I certainly understand the scenario you presented and that's what I am afraid of. I'm afraid I'm screwed because I let my secondaries sit while I studied for the MCAT. 🙁

Just called and I got rejected. Guess I'll be going to those other interviews after all lol.

Yea. I was studying for mcat, while taking organic II + lab and filling out secondaries. My relaxation period involved doing about 3 secondaries a day.

You wouldn't have liked it anyway. 😉 You can find out about KCOM tomorrow as well.

I definitely need some good news from them tommorrow or I'll be walking into my interview Friday feeling pretty bad. Mosspoh, have you decided on NOVA over LECOM?

Haven't really decided on either yet. I'm going to wait till December. I am waiting on AZCOM and KCOM. KCOM might end up winning out. I also have an interview at my number one choice overall due to personal reasons (FSU) and FIU. If I get into FSU then I will immediately accept there. I know I know...MD, but I love the school and the people. It really has the laid back kind of DO personality and they have a lot of the same philosophies which is nice.
