LECOM-Bradenton Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So, I just got my interview today, but I did not get a phone call; I received an email that went as follows:

Congratulations! You have been selected for an admissions interview at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). All interviews for LECOM Erie and LECOM at Seton Hill are held at the Erie Campus.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your interview has been scheduled at the Erie Campus for:

Date: 12/10/2010
Location: 1858 West Grandview Blvd, Erie, PA
Arrive: 8:00 a.m.
Depart: 1:00 p.m.

To confirm your interview, please reply to this e-mail.
You may also contact Colleen Pamula, College Receptionist, by telephone at (814)866-6641 to confirm your interview.

It further explains the process: the lunch, the tour, financial aid, etc.

Should I be worried that I did not get a call, but only an email? 🙁 I sent in my secondary two weeks ago.

Your email was from LECOM in Erie, not Bradenton. I only received an email from Erie as well, and a call and email from Bradenton.

Shockingly enough, I did not realize which thread I was on. I feel tons better. Thank you!

Possible? Yes but you are SEVERELY limiting your chances. I have a friend who applied in February with a 3.97/25 and great ECs who got accepted to WVCOM and AZCOM (her only two interviews). I'd say unless your stats are very good you are hurting your chances by applying that late. I would rather maximize my chances by taking a year off and applying for the following cycle. Keep in mind if you don't get in they expect to see significant improvement as a re-applicant; which would be difficult between March and June.

Yeah, I have a strong application, it's just the MCAT I'm worried about.

Yeah, I have a strong application, it's just the MCAT I'm worried about. I'm going to sit for the MCAT in a week, but I'm really not feeling confident about my score so I'm leaving the void option available. I'm worried about taking it and not voiding, then getting rejected asap, even though I would plan to retake it in January. I'm not sure whether I should void next week, or risk having a poor first try on my record. If everything else is pretty great on your application (in addition to the regular stuff I have additional education, as well as a science-related career) how low of an MCAT score do you think I could get in a week and not get outright rejected? (even after indicating that I will retake in January)
Thanks for your opinions!

I would not void your score unless you were unable to finish large portions of a section. If you do poorly then improve, it reflects positively on you. You just do not want to keep taking it. I read somewhere the admissions committees become concerned if they see three or more MCATs.

Does anyone know if being complete with everything around March 1st is very detrimental? Obviously, it's not ideal, but will I be basically shooting myself in the foot? Has anyone heard of examples of people getting in after applying this late, and approximately what were their stats (GPA, MCAT, etc.)?

Thanks 🙂

I don't remember exactly, but I applied here around that general time... prob late Feb/early March. Worked out for me but this was a few years ago. Stats were ~3.4/33. First 1.5 years of undergrad killed my GPA, but once I came back to school had a good upward trend and did great after a few years break from college. All in all sort of non-trad, had worked in other fields so I hopefully came across as fairly mature and able to handle a more independent PBL curriculum.

Regardless, for various reasons applied very late here and I think was in one o the last interview spots. Even so there were a handful in my group who got in and are current classmates. I'm sure they're receiving more applications each year so it's just going to get more selective, so early will always be prefered. 🙂

Omg isn't it so nerve-wracking? I got the call back in the middle of a 2-hour class and she left a voicemail and I couldn't even concentrate on the lecture lol. I left at the 10-minute break just to check my phone haha.

The suspense is killing me. Can one of you future docs put me in an induced coma for about a week so I won't have to wait?

Can we send in letters of recommendation along with our supplemental application?

I know it says only if we are selected for an interview that we need to send it in but I feel maybe my chances will be better by sending it in before.

Thanks a lot.

I don't know if there is a better thread for this, but I think it would be great for us interviewing here to hear from some LECOM-B student about your experiences in PBL (some funny/interesting stories, some examples of cases you worked on, how you feel about it as a learning system overall, etc).

I'm not a student but this will be stressed dozens of times on your interview day... the cases are not at all about solving the case but are just a framework for you to understand the mechanisms behind certain diseases or conditions. You will get to be in a PBL session for 2 hours too so you will get a pretty solid idea of what I mean. Cases I've seen: Patient presents with an arrow through the gut and fever. Patient presents with jaundice.

I'm sure some students would have a good perspective into the learning style of PBL. I think that a few have actually posted in this and last year's threads.

is anyone else staying at the wingate that is interviewing this friday (the 10th)?

Was Bradenton your top school? If so are you not interviewing anywhere else?

Hey SNDiverse,

My DO letter should be delivered to the school today, so hopefully we can figure out what the enigmatic email that NMR and I got is all about.

I'm little worry about my status because my secondary application was received on July 29 but it is still under reviewed. How long should I wait for the interview invitation? Should I contact the admission office to double check my status?

Thank you

They will contact you. They will change your portal status very quickly once they make a decision. Patience is a virtue.

Sending good vibes :luck:

So, if I'm remembering correctly, they said the admissions committee is meeting up today to make some decisions about last week's interviews. It's going to take every fiber of my being to not pick up the phone and call them. For those of you who already heard back, did you get the call/letter/portal update about a week after your interview?

Last week the committee met Tuesday too, and we were told on my Monday interview that we could call Wednesday afternoon if we really needed to find out the decision (i.e. if it is your top choice and you want to cancel other flights/interviews). I called Wednesday kind of late, so I ended up having to call back Thursday and no one picked up, but I left a voice mail. Then Annette called me back Friday during class to let me know (although my letter came in the mail on Saturday anyways, I live in MI).

Good luck!! :luck:

Wow, you found out lickity split. Took all of 4 days! Congrats on the acceptance by the way. It must be a relief to have one in the bag so early.

I interviewed on the 1st (last Wednesday). I'm way up in New England, though, so I'm guessing I won't hear anything until next week.

Plus, you were lucky enough to interview the day before they meet and decide. 😀

that definitely helped. i was surprised how quick they are. how was ur interview?

Looks like I'm officially being reconsidered... got my waitlist letter today. Rejected -> Waitlisted -> Rejected -> Waitlisted lol

I think it went well. There were no curve balls or anything like that. My interviewers were really nice and laid back, so it was more of a pleasant conversation than anything else.
It's funny, though, how you always notice whenever they stop to write something down. Even as you're talking, you're thinking in the back of your mind, "Hmmm, I wonder what they're jotting down right now..." lol. We'll see, I guess. I don't want to get carried away with false confidence.

Do you think you'll actually matriculate next year, or are you still weighing your options?

That's great! Hopefully the waitlist is arranged chronologically. They said during my interview day that they accepted 30 (out of 50) people off the waitlist last year.

Good luck dbDan. You have alot of people pulling for ya. :luck:

i feel u on the writing. but overall yea, the interview was pretty chill. gl to u!

👍 they need to throw an acceptance at the end of that order

I am fairly certain there was a much larger list than 50. They also said it barely moved last year compared to years past. I was on the waitlist last year...

The 30/50 number refers to the December review, I was told those numbers too when I called last week. Maybe by the spring they start waitlisting like madmen and movement stops. Even at ours he said they had gone "much farther down the list than he expected to," remember?

There is hope!

My letter was supposedly faxed in today, but I'm definitely going to call to confirm that they received it. I think the committee only meets on Tuesday though, so I'm guessing I'll have to wait at least a week until I can call about my status. This might actually be a good thing if I end up getting in because the deposit due date should be pushed back. Guess I just have to wait at this point...

The interview here is waaay more stressful than at Erie. I felt like I was being grilled but other than that the school was pretty awesome.

o man, sorry to hear that gatorfan. they cut me off at times during my interview but as long as u were able to stay composed and answer the questions, im sure you'll do fine

I seem to recall a couple people staggering back into the conference room as if they were just interrogated for a murder case. They probably just wanted to see how you react "under stress."

Are you from Gainsville? What do you think of that crazy pastor down there burning qurans this weekend?

Has anyone been accepted without having all their pre-reqs completed yet? I still have ONE credit I need for organic chemistry (a lab), so I was just curious if anyone has received a "conditional" acceptance or something like that.
