LECOM Bradenton Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi all, just got an interview invite for November. I had a question regarding letters though. My school has already compiled a Committee Letter/Packet and I already have a DO letter, but LECOM seems to want specific things addressed in the LORs. Have you all/will you all get these letters rewritten specific to LECOM?

Thanks!

There is nothing specific that needs to be addressed by your letter writers. General letters of rec for med school are good enough.

Hey yall, LECOM told me they received my primary app. at the beginning of August and said it was under review. I haven't received any other emails from the since then and haven't gotten a secondary yet. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks.

I am not sure my LORs specifically addressed everything in their request list. However, I do know I got an interview. Subsequently, I got an acceptance. Which leads me to my other comment.

Great, thanks!

Yes, contact them, I was told there was a glitch, I sent in my secondary the same day and had an interview offer a week later...

Would anyone that is interviewing on Monday, Oct. 31st be wiling to share transportation back to the Tampa airport after the interview?

I have an interview on Oct. 3rd. I have not reserved a hotel room yet, is there anyone else who would like to split the cost of the room for sunday night before the interview? I have a rental car also since I will be driving in from Ft. Lauderdale so we could drive to the interview together. If anyone is interested pm me and we can discuss the details. BTW I am a 27yo male, with a very protective girlfriend, so preferable another dude.

I'm going to be booking my room sometime tomorrow so if anyone is interested that already has a room hit me up.

Quick question. I have an interview here on Nov. 7, and I was wondering about the PBL study method. I understand that much of the learning is done in study groups and at home, but what about OMT. Do you still meet weekly to learn OMT principles in your first and second years?

Yes, there is still a weekly OMT lecture (1hr) and lab (2hr).

There are also clinical exam lectures and some workshops, but they aren't as regular as OMM.

Econo lodge, haha...cheapest I could find since my flight was almost 400 and renting a car is gonna be a small fortune too

I hear you. I have 3 interviews that week (2 in FL, 1 in GA), so I'm probably going to bite the bullet and rent a car for a week and just drive a lot. :/

3 in one week? wow I thought 3 within 3 weeks was gonna be stressful. Good luck!

So I've been accepted for a while now, and I'm not going to pay the deposit. I hope someone totally awesome gets my spot, Bradenton is a cool place. Best wishes to all you LECOM'ers

I've received acceptances from both LECOM-B and Nova this week. Due to LECOM's 30-day deposit rule, I need to make some sort of decision between the two schools so that I don't waste $1500. Anybody else in the same position as me, and do you have any thoughts about the two universities?

I chose Bradenton over Nova(and a few others) and there is no one here that can help you. just answer some questions for yourself. Which one felt better? Are you ok with paying like 20k+ more per year(more if you are OOS) to go to NSU and live in south florida? do you feel comfortable with pbl(it scared me a lot but it is pretty awesome when you are doing it)? Then you have to think about trade offs like do you want to dissect your own cadaver and get to know it that way or have 5 dissected by a world class anatomist and dissector, and whether you want someone to tell you everything you need to know or whether you want the "freedom" to chose (you will cover everything in every textbook at least once in your first 2 years). location of the schools are almost the same. Davie and lakewood ranch are VERY similar, just less diversity in LWR. I can't really think of anything else, but if you have any specifics just ask and ill give you some input on what i thought about it.

I am getting very excited about the PBL. It seems like its catered to my learning style for sure. Do you have the same 8 people in your group all the way through your first 2 years, or does it change constantly?

Changes every so often I believe, probably after each exam?

Your group changes each semester. You change "facilitators" halfway through the semester.

Sending my deposit in tomorrow. I will be matriculating for the class of 2016!

First of all I already have looked at many of the available sites and interview questions the admissions committee might ask me. I just wanted to see if other individuals who are following this forum can provide me with unique questions that is specific to these two schools. Also, "Eire" was a typo mistake from Erie. Second of all one of my goal is to become a medical student. That is the reason why I have my status as a medical student and I believe it's a personal choice. Thanks

I received an interview at Nova and lake Eire Bradenton campus school of osteopathic medicine coming up next month? Feeling stress, nervous, and anxiety developing for it. Can someone fill me in on interview/acceptance rate at these campuses and provide me with informative information for these schools. Also, what are some of the questions that the admissions committee might ask me on interview day. Thanks

I like to think that I'm usually pretty helpful, but your post shows an extreme lack of even a lame attempt at finding some answers yourself.

The SDN interview feedback will tell you all the interview questions. Try the magical SEARCH function to find out more about each school. Come back here when you can spell the school's name right.

Informative information? Seriously?!?

Because I'm feeling bad for the last comment...here: http://www.studentdoctor.net/schools/school/lecom-florida

I got my letter in the mail today. Accepted!

Congrats!! do you live in georgia by any chance? I was looking at your MDapps and you have seemed to apply to all georgia schools even though MCG takes mostly in state? just confused since it says you are from alabama haha

I'm a Georgia native. I lived there my entire life and did my undergrad there as well. However, I did my graduate work at UAB in Alabama though, so that's where I currently live. I'm currently a postdoc, which is sort of in the gray area of student status, so my state residency was a big headache that is still pretty unresolved. I originally applied with GA residency only to find out that was incorrect 🙄. I may or may not have Alabama residency given my employment status as a postdoc. TL;DR my state residency is a mess

Sigh. There aren't really any "unique" questions, at least not for Bradenton. It's really a pretty laid back interview. The most laid back one I had while applying to medical school, in fact. Was almost verbatim from the SDN feedback questions.

I would seriously change your status to Pre-medical. It is meant to reflect your current level of training, and anything otherwise is confusing, misleading, and MIGHT violate the SDN terms of service. If you're not a medical student, don't say you are. You don't see me saying I'm a physician...at least not for another few months. If you want to signify your goals, you can write that in underneath, like where I have written "rock god" on my profile.

Anyways, good luck. Something tells me you'll need it...:luck:

my fault for generalizing "interview questions" and not being specific like I did on my second response. Thanks for your help digitlnoize.

GOT AN INTERVIEW!!! YESSSS. excited to see what LECOM-B has to offer and the PBL program

My application is not complete. I have not sent in my LOR"s, but will do it soon. I called the admissions office and they told me that I must have my LOR's in before my interview. Although, they grant you with a interview date, you must have your application complete before the interview day. I hope this helps. Also, they are flexible to change interview dates.

The portal says the admission committee has made a decision. Called twice, no answer both times, and left a voicemail once. Anyone else had better luck from Oct. 3rd interview?

Send Annette an email...that worked for me. She called me back immediately.

this is my first post.. anyone interviewing this friday by any chance?

I got an interview 10/7

-Flight from SD to Tampa: $273 (bought early)
-Rental Car from enterprise: $46 (would've been cheaper but I had to pay the young driver charge ~$27)
-Wingate Hotel: $59

Not too bad cost-wise

You may believe it is a personal choice all you want, it doesn't make it so. You are NOT a medical student. You are PRE-MED plain and simple. When you are accepted and enrolled somewhere, you may change your status. Right now, it just makes you seem inept. I am pre-med, and have several interviews, I MAY get accepted this cycle, I am pre-med until I am accepted and I pay the enrollment fee... I implore you to change your status before someone points it out to the mods and they do something about it, it is like a med student saying they're a resident...

FYI - if you're planning on doing a trial run to the school as I did this morning (driving in from tampa), it might be a good idea to dress some what formally.

I showed up in a t-shirt, jeans, and sandals and got stared at (or at least felt that way) like I had leprosy (specifically by some faculty, not so much by the students)

Knowing the schools dress code I guess it was my fault for making an appearance in casual attire but I just wanted to see where we were supposed to park and enter through the back with security.

I might just be paranoid because as I was walking through the parking lot I overheard a faculty member sternly telling a student not to show up without a LECOM shirt on - everyone was dressed in athletic type clothing

I'm probably making it a bigger deal than it is but just a heads up for future prospects 🙂

Give it a few days and be patient. They send the letters out quickly. I interviewed like 2 weeks ago on a monday and had a letter in my mailbox in Utah on Saturday.

As a side note, it was an acceptance letter!

Does anyone who got an invite know the latest dates for interviewing? is it after thanksgiving or December?

Thanks!!

I just interviewed at LECOM-B and we were offered to know our acceptance in one week or defer knowing until December. They said it would have no effect on the acceptance decision. I deferred until December. Is this a bad idea or does it really have no effect on your acceptance?

I think that is more a way to defer your payment of the deposit than anything else. I wish they had told me that. Lol.

Wow, I didn't know you could do that. I guess when I interview on Nov. 7 I will have to consider that.

Hmm. I don't know. If anything, I think it'd be a way to prioritize which apps they need to make a decision on now vs later.

I would say that you want to know ASAP. Safer choice and you seem more interested. Assuming you really are interested. They could also be gauging your interest. If you don't want to know until later, you don't seem as interested as someone who really wants to know now. Tough call...

That is exactly what it is for, so you can delay giving your 1500 dollar deposit. They said you can know next week and you will have one month to give 1500 to hold your spot or you can defer until dec 14th and then you will have a month from then to give your 1500 to hold your spot. They said it would not effect their decision to accept whatsoever, but I was just wondering if anyone else had any knowledge of whether that is true or not.

Thanks

I heard the same spiel when I interviewed. I still find it difficult to believe it has no impact on the decision making process. You're either committed to the school after the interview or you're not. If it was truly about allowing you to defer your decision, it seems they would give you more than 5-10 minutes to make this decision. This is purely my opinion though, so take it with a grain of salt.
