LECOM Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone. Just sent in my deposit for LECOM - erie... Whoo.

I've been hopelessly addicted to these forums for way too long without ever posting anything...

Now that the fear and loathing that is the application process into medical school is over, I feel like it's time for my first post!

So... In response to a prior question about late interviews, I was interviewed in Erie on March 2 and did not receive my admittance until the very end of march, so there's still hope (i think) for anyone waiting to hear back from LECOM about their status... Good luck to everyone and hope to see many of you in the fall!

As I'm printing out out apt information and getting ready to take a trip to Erie in two weeks I was wondering if any of you encoutered other apts that were not listed. Like, single apts for rent by private owners, etc. Is this kind of thing popular among LECOM students or do people mostly rent from these known, couple apt buildings like Landmark Square, Baldwin Brothers. etc.?

Margaret

When are interviews over?

I think they said that they would be interviewing people until the end of march....

Hey Everyone...I just got my LECOM acceptance today! I'm totally excited...just wanted to give out a general thanks for all the info people have posted regarding this school 🙂

is a 3.35 overall and science g.p.a with a 23 MCAT good enough stat wise for LECOM-PA. thanx

Yes, those are their average stats for incoming students.

I know at LECOM anatomy lab is prosection, but I heard them mention that if one would like to dissect the cadavers, he/she could apply to do this over the summer. Is this only offered to students after they complete the anatomy course? Can anyone provide information about doing this?

I was told those who got an "A" in anatomy would be offered the opportunity to dissect the cadavers for the next years class.

Also, I took some initiative and started a group for members of the class of 2010 at http://groups.myspace.com/LECOM. Join us!

LECOM is still acepting students, not just interviewing for the alt list. I interviewed 2 weeks ago, got accepted ISP yesterday. And, if you are on the alternate list, there is a good chance. I know 2 2nd years who got in off the list. From what I know, there is usually a lot of movement throughout the next few months.

Awesome, right? Maybe I should change that profile picture though.... lol

This is how the bodies get prosected for you. So the summer after first year you can apply to be a dissector. I think it's a 40 hours week at about $6/hr the last I heard. So, yes it's only offered after the anatomy course. The gross lab is not large enough to have bodies at different stages of dissection through out the year. The new "batch" of bodies starts in the summer for the following year. Remember that school there starts the end of July so its a lot of work to do in a short amount of time.

Hey:
I don't know when I'll be moving yet, I don't even have an apt. Did you find a nice apt for yourself already? I'm going to Erie in about a week to check out some places.

Margaret

Donvb:

lol, yeah the picture will be changed back soon enough!! I WAS a longhorn fan until UTMB-Galveston went from wait-listing me to not even interviewing me the following year! lol I went to a private university in Austin and I currently stay in Houston during the week to serve with Americorps and go to Austin to see my best friend, my brother, and girlfriend's family on the weekends. Speaking of this weekend, I'm turning 24 on saturday!!!!

Whats up with all these LECOM bashing threads?? I say don't bitch, get into the Independent Study Pathway, and then bust your ass studying ( or rather, LEARNING) 8-10 hours a day. I decided to go to LECOM over allopathic schools, "top" DO schools, etc b/c of their ISP program (That and the fact that I've never really seen snow before!)

I think that I'm with ya'll...probably move in july 15ish. Too expensive to take a UHAUL from Houston to Erie, so I'll be buying all new furniture, bed, etc... At least my fiance is coming so she can shovel the snow... (hey, I just had back surgery!)

Where is everybody looking at moving in to? -CHRIS

Hi to those headed for Erie. My family has lived here for 5 years now. I'm in ISP starting in July; my sweetie started last July. If we can answer any questions about the area, ISP, or life in Erie, PM us (also if you're looking for used furniture, of which we have a lot!).

All the best to all of you about to tackle Erie for the first time, as well as med school!

I was wondering if you can give me some suggestions regarding apts. I am going to Erie next weekend to look at some apts that take pets. Here are some apts I'll be looking at: Landmark square, Maple Lane, Appletree (Baldwin-Hawthorne), Tanglewood. Any suggestions on those, or other ones I don't know about?
Also how else should we be getting ready for school? Should we be buying books, equipment, atlases, etc. I've heard that we won't use all of the books that are on the list. ???!
Thank you in advance

Since we own our home and have never done the apartment thing, I can't advise you there... Sorry!

With regards to the buying of books and equipment, I can offer this:

If you like to have your own copies of books for your own library, you can probably get them online cheaper than at school. If you don't need to have your own copies, they should be available in the school library, if you actually need them. MOST (not all) of what you need to know will be in the notes/powerpoints that are distributed by your instructors, IF you're in LDP.

Is anyone of you interesting in a renting a house together? I'm going to be a student there this Fall also. Please let me know what you guys think.

Where do most students live?? Laurel Ridge?? i was thinking about looking there for a place.

Hi everyone, I was accepted a while ago and decided to join in. Where is everyone planning to live? I have looked at a few places down there and talked to a few people from the school. The Appletree apartments seemed nice and I have heard from several people that the Granada Apartments are horrible. If i do a one bedroom I think Appletree may be the way to go. Has anyone else been apartment hunting? What are your thoughts?

Hi: I've been researching the apt info for a while and I'm actually going to look at some places this weekend. Appletree is one of the apts I'm going to look at. I'm also looking at Maplelane, Landmark Square, and some apt that a private person is renting out. My research was a little more specific b/c I need an apt that will take a cat and I guess not too many apts do.
Let me know which apts you think are good?

In addition, I'll be in LDP and never really thought about the other pathways. Does anyone know details about what the differences are, how life in med school actually looks in the other pathways. I usually used the class notes to study and always attended lectures, therefore, chose the same pathway.
What are your thoughts everyone?

I looked at Landmark Square and was a little iffy on them. They are remodeling them and seem to have big plans for their complexes but they didnt seem to be to sure when they would be able to complete them. Also, they were not sure if they would have any 1 bedrooms available before school starts and they currently onle have 1 LECOM student renting from them. The other thing that concerned me was the location and parking. These apartments were in an industrial area and I was a little unsure of the neighberhood, but with all that being said. The interior of the apartments, being newly remodeled, dont look to bad. Let me know what you think when you look at them. I think for the price Appletree has imoressed me the most so far.

Has anyone seen Laurel Ridge apartments in person? How close to LECOM is it and what's the general consensus for those currently living there? Thanks.

I was inside once. Std basic white wall apt. Newly built. Nice. They are located on the corner of Granview/Ellsworth. The school is also on the corner of Grandview/Ellsworth. With the way the parking lot for the school is and the door you enter: It would take you 5 minutes to walk. 2 minutes to drive.

Awesome! Thanks for the response.

Do any of you know anything about health insurance from LECOM?

I know that they do offer a plan for students. I am not sure of the details, however- check out their website. I also don't know if it is included in the cost of living.

Dr Trek 1-
Are you retaking the MCAT and applying again this cycle?

MARGARET4 said:

If you have your own insurance stick with that. The LECOM policy is very poor - basically catastrophic coverage. It's not for everyday doctors visits and I don't think it covers OB. And Watch out for the SOMA policy they try to say is "better". I ended up having to get a lawyer my first year to get my bills paid because they refused to cover certain things. Turns out it was a billing/coding error but it took a long time to resolve - huge hassle. Unfortunately you have to have some kind of coverage. The good thing is that Millcreek hospital is basically run by the school so if soething super emergent happens you can go there and not get hassled about the bill. They work with you.

No, I am not retaking the MCAT. I have an acceptance to LECOM which I deferred for a year so I am a member of the c/o 2011. However, I may reapply to a few other schools this year. Why?

Just curious as you've indicated in a couple of posts on SDN that you are going to reapply. I didn't know if you're going to retake the MCAT or just reapply. Either way, make sure you start EARLY, and good luck :luck:!

Glad to know someone actually reads my posts on SDN

I think LECOM is a great school- especially ISP. I just want to really explore my options. And there is no way I am taking the MCAT again, hehe.

Yeah, I'll definately send my AACOMAS primary in on June 1st.

Laurel Ridge is right across the street (Ellsworth?)!!! We looked at them, very nice! But they don't accept pets, so they had to be crossed off the list. 🙁 My favorite apartments that were near the school were the Lakeview Townhomes. I would have definitely lived there - again, however, no pets!

Oops... guess I should read before I post, I see that cabinbuilder already answered your question!

No problem. It's good to hear from more than one person.

Can anyone take that 360 degree tour of LECOM via IPIX? It doesn't work fo rme.

I'm actually looking into Lakeview apts. right now. Do a lot of students live there?

From what the landlord said, there are lots of LECOM students that live there. Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure! I was at the apartments for probably half-hour total - they would have been at the top of my list had they allowed pets.

Doesn't work for me either, from home or work! 😡

I'll be in Erie tomorrow looking at apt's that take pets, I won't leave my cat Edie behind. So for anyone that's interested I'll give you guys the information I found regarding the apts I'll look at. I have appointments at: Maplelane, Appletree, Landmark square, some private apt from the ads that LECOM mailed us, Tanglewood (kind of far), Boston Store Place, etc

Hey guys!

I was just wondering if anyone got the roommate list? They definitely said that they were sending them out at the beginning of March.

Yes, I would say that the majority of LECOM students live at lakeview. It's about a 4 mintues drive to the school and their is access from both 38th and Grandview. Nice during the blizzards to be able to get home quickly and easily.

How about Belle Village or Brookwood Village?
