I am currently a Junior in high school interested in this program. I would like to participate in the Dental school EAP, however, is it worth it? The requirements are i believe maintaining a 3.4 sgpa, and a 16 on the DAT. The minimum requirements to be considered into this program are a 26ACT and a 3.5 gpa. I myself have a gpa of 3.83 and I have not taken the ACT yet, but I have taken practice exams scoring 30+. Do I have a chance of getting into this program? And if I do, is it worth it?

From the LECOM website:

Undergraduate Affiliated College
For a complete list of the LECOM EAP affiliated schools and programs, please click here.

LECOM has developed special Early Acceptance Programs with select community colleges, undergraduate colleges and universities that grant qualified students a provisional early acceptance to LECOM’s School of Pharmacy, School of Dental Medicine or College of Osteopathic Medicine. In some cases, these programs will permit the student to start the professional program prior to receiving a bachelor degree from the undergraduate institution.

Application to the EAP is separate from the application to the undergraduate school. A student may apply for EAP consideration as a high school senior. While current undergraduate students may apply, they should contact the pre-health advisor at their school to see if they qualify. This program is not available to anyone with a bachelor or higher degree. Students apply to enroll in the EAP by following the link “Affiliated Undergraduate College Inquiry” found on the My LECOM Portal. Some undergraduate schools may require a separate application for their phase of the EAP program; please check with the institution.

LECOM will determine if the applicant meets enrollment requirements. LECOM will provide a list of EAP interview dates to qualified applicants who can then schedule an interview. Following a successful interview, LECOM will notify the applicant that they will receive a provisional letter of acceptance from LECOM after they have been approved for participation in the EAP by the affiliated institution of their choice and submitted their school email address to LECOM. The student and the affiliated school will then be sent the provisional letter of acceptance.

Additional requirements, including a final application to LECOM, must be met for final acceptance to LECOM, but another interview is not required. The specific criteria for acceptance into the programs will vary from school to school, but the general requirements are listed below:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • SAT Score (Math and Verbal Reasoning) greater than or equal to 1170 on a single exam or an ACT Composite score greater than or equal to 26 on a single exam and
  • An unweighted high school GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Students already attending the affiliate institution must have at least a cumulative overall GPA of 3.4 and a science GPA of 3.2 or higher
More detailed information on the programs available at an institution and the criteria needed for acceptance can be found on its website.

Dental Program:
4+4 Track – This program is only available in Bradenton, FL. The student must have a provisional letter of acceptance in the EAP before starting their third year at the undergraduate institution. Upon submitting a PharmCas application, completing four years of undergraduate study and meeting certain GPA and other requirements, they enter LECOM the following July. LECOM graduates receive a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree.

Not sure what you mean by is it worth it? That is going to come down to you. You will bypass all the application hassles further down the line. If you want to get into a career track that young, only you can determine whether it's "worth it" or not.

Although i was the considering the medicine one, I think it's pretty similar. However, I have lost interest in the program for multiple reasons:
-if you have the required gpa and mcat/dat to stay in the progam, chances are you'll be able to get in at another similar school that you make like better. Obviously if you do the bare minimum and have a low gpa then this may not work.
- the undergrad institutions didn't fit me(this is a personal opinion I just preferred other schools to the ones they are connected with. If you decide along the path you don't want to do this, you don't want to be stuck in a school you don't love or have to worry about transferring.
- you're committing yourself early on... I'm not sure if it is the same concept with the dental program, but in the medicine program you can drop out at any time. This would be perfect if you love the undergrad but like I said above, you may not!
This program is perfect for some people and terrible for others. Definitely do research on both schools before you decide... Good luck
