Another phils fan! I love it 👍 I was just daydreaming in biochem about how much i need baseball back in my life. And yes, we are getting married, whether he knows it or not, lol. Actually, I made the name whilst watching a game, & he was pitching, so I thought it was appropriate. At this point I have narrowed my choices down to NSU-COM & LECOM. The fact that going lecom would leave me with much less debt in the end may in fact be the deciding factor. Good luck on your LECOM interview 🙂 ps- what is your icon?

HAHA same with me and Al...he just doesnt know it yet😉

You'll be fine Mies...

They have a sheet of 10 questions they ask at the interview, and depending on the interview panel you could have a very different experience! Some pannels(like our anatomy profs) would just ask you a question wanting the minimum answer that will fill the white area on their page! Others will talk and stray from the 10 questions... Their interview system is strange because they don't have that long to interview students and have certain answers they are required to get from you, so it may seem more like an interrogation than other interviews. Don't worry!!

Good luck!

P.S. word of advice for all newcomers next year, if in the future you ever say "God, I can't wait for Anatomy to be over!"... Stop, and realize that the crap is only hitting the fan! After that you get owned by Micro, Pharm, and Biochem all at once!🙂 I'm just beginning to realize this myself, and wanted to pass it on...

I feel better now: I had an anatomy prof and a physiology prof. There may be hope yet 👍

Congrats to all those who were accepted! I haven't posted in awhile but I sent in my deposit a few weks ago. Anyone thinking of where to live? I have been checking out some of the apts on the internet...and I love the cheapness...i guess anything is better compared to NY! Has it hit anyone else yet that we are gonna be F**ing doctors?

Hey! I officially sent in my deposit today!😀 *well, tomorrow since today is sunday😉 * I am SO excited! A friend of mine is an alum and she lived in lakeview...SUPER nice townhouses and the rent is decent *of course its decent everywhere in Erie 😀 * the only downside is they dont accept pets and I want to get a kitty! 🙁 and no, it hasn't hit me yet...although i DID get really excited watching greys the other night...hahahah😉

I'm sending out my deposit tomorrow as well. Anybody planning on buying a home since they're so cheap? It may come out the same for a mortgage as to renting.

I sent out my deposit today. Anybody else send it out?

Nope, that's not him. He's the chair of Anatomy.

i had an anatomy prof who is new to LECOM. I was questioning him about the Sturgeon General (the big painted fish) and he claimed he was new and didn't know anything about the fish.

Wow! My bank account looks empty! $1500 check cashed...I guess its official! woohoo I am definitely looking into lakeview...I also heard they are building new apts that will be really close...anyone have any info/website on them?

yeah and there's a tunnel to the med school so you can avoid the snow. they were discussing them in the class of 2010 thread a while back.

If this is what they're going to build on that lot right across from the school I don't think they'll be up soon. Last I saw it's just a leveled plot.

Hey

I lived in Lakeview for 2 years and highly recommend it. It's just a hop, skip, and a jump away from LECOM!

Hey everyone, (I am stealing this idea from other class threads I was perusing) my sn is Fame85 if anyone wants to say hello!🙂

hey i think that is a good idea!
my sn is katie22578

I got accepted to ISP today and will be joining y'all this July! Woohoo! So, what is this "sn" you're all discussing? screen-name? clue me in...🙂

Congrats MVDM! You deserve it!

Hey everyone, does anyone know of townhouses/apts close to LECOM *i.e. millcreek area* that allow cats?! I want to bring my kitty with me but I can't seem to find a single "pet friendly" complex! 😡 Shes old so I don't want to have to leave her behind 🙁 If anyone knows of a place that accepts pets lemme know! Thank you!🙂

I’ve never posted on SDN, I’m one of those that just reads and never posts, but on this day, I want to congratulate my fellow peers that have been accepted to LECOM-Erie 2011. It’s going to be an awesome time in Erie and in LECOM. I was accepted last month into PBL and can’t wait to start. I’ve lived in the Erie area for most of my life, so if anyone has any questions just shoot.

Congratulations to everyone that’s been accepted, but is it just me, but I’m on a constant high knowing that in four years I’m going to be doctor along with you guys.

I hope that all your wishes come true on this day.

pdubguru,
Congrats on PBL! Is anyone looking to buy a house/condo or am I the only one? lol

we're not buying a house because we're planning to come back to ptitsburgh for years 3 and 4 and we own a house here. we're not going to sell it. we're looking to rent a house with a yard for the kids. i'm not worried about ebing close to LECOM because my current commute is an hour. anything less than that would be nice.

does anyone know if you can order LECOM shirts/hats/etc. off the web? they have pictures of the stuff on the bookstore webpage but no way to order it. I wanted to get some shirts for my kids. I may end up driving up there....

My wife and I are looking to buy a house. We have two small dogs, which is near impossible to find an apartment with, and I'm tired of throwing my money away on rent. I know med students aren't that well off financially, but there's a definite potential to make a small profit when it's all said and done.

That's what I'm talking about!👍

hey has anyone who has sent in their deposit gotten any further info from LECOM? Just curious I am home for break and all my mail is going to my college?

I just got the acknowledgement. We should expect things from Fin Aid around March.

anyone know:

1)what the grading system is? (letter, percentage, pass/fail, ?)

2) what we wear in OMM lab ?(yes, because I read that thread over in pre-osteo  )

Grades are A (90%), B (80%), C (70%), then failing, if below that.

OMM attire is shorts & T-shirt, with women wearing sportbra or 1-piece swimsuit underneath the T...

My husband and I bought a house. Real estate is very cheap in Erie and I think we got a pretty good deal. We used Howard Hanna real estate and were happy with them. If you have a spouse with an income it's definitely possible to buy a house. If you have school age kids I've heard Millcreek is better than Erie city schools.

You do not even need to have an income to buy a house. You can get a 'No document' loan, which is essentially based on your credit score. You do not have to provide proof of employment or anything else for that matter. That is what I used 4 years ago when I moved out here to buy a house.

Also, my house we will be on the market in early March/April if anyone is interested. Just PM me and I will give you the details. I would only recommend buying a house if you plan on staying and doing your rotations in Erie for your 3/4th year.

It is definitely a buyer's market in Erie.

I am sending in my deposit tomorrow! 🙂

This thread is making me nervous because I have a big puppy who is definitely coming with me next year. My boyfriend will be coming as well, how much is it to rent a house in Erie? It is doable, like renting an apt? I will not have a job obviously, and he will be going to school full time with a part time retail job/substitue teaching or something.

I'm also worried about the snow!! 😱 I have a Firebird and it likes to spin and get stuck in snow/ice.

Hey,
I was just accepted to LECOM erie, and i'm really looking forward to it. But I did have a few questions,

First, is it necessary to get snow tires? I know when I interviewed down there there was a snowstorm/squall but it gave about a foot. Also about the books, is there a way to buy them off the class of 2010? And lastly How are Laurel Ridge Apts?

Thanks so much,

If you are familiar with driving in the snow then you won't need snow tires. I have always driven in heavy snow with a small 2W drive car and no snow tires...however, if you're really uncomfortable driving in snow I guess it couldn't hurt. So far this winter we've probably only had maybe 2 or 3 slippery days with any substantial snow.

I doubt you'd be able to find many used books from students, other than the anatomy text and atlas. If you're LDP, those are really the only books you'll be using--I think almost everyone relies exclusively on notes and power points (and most lectures do not specify particular pages of readings anyway). If you're PBL you'll want to be hanging onto your books, say, forever. ISP...I'm not too sure.

I don't know much about laurel ridge...I know a few people who live there and they seem to like it though. It's really close to school though, so if you're worried about driving in snow you can easily walk from laurel ridge.

My kids went to Millcreek schools for the last five years while I was at LECOM. Now that I am in Texas I can tell you that those schools are at least 1 1/2 years ahead of the curriculum in the South. Definitely that way to go.

I'm going to be renting a house too (no dog, but two kids and my mother, so I need some room  ). I've done some research and it seems you can get a pretty big place for like 600-800 a month. I've been looking at townhouses as well as single family houses. There's a good link to a real estate rentals website over in a LECOM thread in the main osteo forum. I'll post it over here once I find it again.

Ooo really? That's an awesome deal. I'd love that info. I have a big puppy and I feel guilty putting him in a small apt w/no yard.

okay here it is: http://www.rentalguideerie.com

it allows you to be pretty specific with your search criteria. it's a good place to start.

Lisa: are you definately going to LECOM?

Am I dumb?? All I see on that site is apartments and NEW homes. Where is the renting house option?

And I sent in my deposit and gave up my seat at DCOM. I still haven't heard from a lot of schools and I don't have a #1 choice, so.....

About time this thread got some action lol I'm actually in the process of buying a home in Erie (Millcreek).

The house where I lived and rented is 10 minutes to LECOM right close to the mall. If you would like you can PM me and I will forward you the landlords email and address and phone. He is THE BEST person. Really works with you with the timing of the student loans. I lived there for 5 years. The rent is 950/mo but if you paid in 6 months at a time when the loans come then its $900/mo. The yard is almost 2 acres, it's like a park. We created a garden area and the tire swings should still be there for the kids. It's in Millcreel school district. My kids went to Grandview (I had to request it) That is THE BEST SCHOOL EVER. LEt me know.

A couple of housing notes...

There's a plan right off of Peach St. and I79 called Grenada (maybe Granada, i forget). Don't live there, it's the cheapest you'll find in Erie, but you get what you pay for, there's some shady characters that live there and most people leave after a year.

If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive 1 or 2-bedroom apartment, on grandview blvd past the school, there's a place called Pastore Realtors, they have some nice places to rent. I rented a 1-bedroom place for $410 a month, there were quite a few LECOMers living in the plan, it was a good bargain.
