LECOM-Erie Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
lol. good cause i didn't hear that part of the mandatory attendance!! Wow maybe its a good thing I am flying out in the morning.. although there may still be delays then.. fun fun!! Im glad you got home safe, though!!

oh yeah, financial aid was no biggie.. if you need to know anything just PM me and i'll give you all the extra info they gave us.. which wasn't much.. its all in that packet basically. 🙂

good luck!

To current students: What is the place to live? --I absolutely need a garage though!

I know Belle Village & Brookwood have garages, but they are 15 mins from school. I live here b/c I have a big dog and its hard to find a place around the school where he is allowed. Also Carrollwood have garages, they are only a year old and right around the corner from LECOM. I couldn't get in last year, maybe they will have openings this year?

Lakeview right near the school also has garages. Start looking soon, the places by the school will fill up fast. Also, you can look in goerie.com or something like that for houses to rent which will have garages, there are quite a few near LECOM but you'd probably have to find roomies.

Did they give you that appartment book at your interview? If not I can send you mine. It has a listing of the area appartment communities, and you can call them to see about garages, etc.

Yes, they did. That is very kind of you. Calling is a good idea because for me checking out places in person is kind of a problem. (I am from Texas) Also, they haven't sent out a roommate list yet. I anticipate having a roommate. I hope these places close to the school w/ garages don't fill up too soon. I don't want to spend my mornings cleaning ice/snow off my car.

For anyone wanting to interview sooner.... I just canceled my interview for Jan28 after being accepted at LECOM-B. So, you may want to call and see if you can slip into that spot.

I have another question for current students. What is the typical day like for a MS1 LDP student? (i.e. what time do classes start, end, how much time for lunch, etc.) Also, do y'all have any advice? Should I be doing anything now to prepare myself? Thanks.

decisions made tomorrow for 1/18 group.. eeeep!!

Yeah! Let me know if you hear anything. They won't make a decision on me yet though because they are waiting on my LORs still (though I talked to my school and they have all now, and will send them out before the end of this week). Best of luck to you!

I will let you know! But since that lady wont be in the office to mail out the letters this week (or so amy thinks) I may not get the letter till after I am in China.. but I will let you know asap after that!! Good luck gtting your stuff in as quickly as possible!1

i interview next friday...about how long til we hear something back?

how are the ladies at LECOM-erie? hahaha, i just had to ask.

The days are pretty long unfortunately. I wish we had more time off, esp since attendance is mandatory. I'm not sure if other schools give you more time to study. Class always starts at 8am. It definitely goes until 12, and usually ends around 1-5. Afternoons are lab times or other lectures. We have an hour for lunch at 12. Classes are in 50 min blocks, with a 10 min break afterwards. Labs are about an hour and a half.

I probably would just relax this summer? I really wish I had taken Anatomy in undergrad, but I'm sure its too late for that now! With Biochem coming in second, although that was mainly the beginning lectures. The last half of Biochem I I got all As in, and this semester I'm doing fine as well without anything previous. So basically just make money and have fun.

any word on how many seats are still open? i got my interview in less than a month.

After Friday you can call and try to get an interview on the 8th of Feb.

I'm canceling mine. 🙂

I always find it funny when people type in that they are canceling their interview and that it is up for grabs-- as if you can just call the school and be like 'I heard you'll be having an opening on such and such date-- can you squeeze me in'? Perhaps it works this way-- but it justs seems silly to me. But, I always think it is commendable when people cancel interviews in advance so another person can get the chance to interview. I think it's rude, when people just decide not to show up the day of--and that opportunity goes to waste.

Received matriculation packet in the mail yesterday, live in Illinois.

im thinkin about wearing a colored shirt for my interview, something like blue or yellow. should i just wear a white shirt?

black suit- white shirt and red tie look the best for an interview.
blue shirts are ok but they look best when worn with a yellow tie, or something more firey.
tan suit- probably best worn in spring or early fall.

you can never underestimate the power of a red tie. Make sure you look conservative.

this is my humble opinion as a southern gentleman. Good luck and rock em!

****, im hella cool and was thinkin about wearing a banana yellow suit, gator shoes and walk in with a cane. thats how i roll son. my main goal is to show how thug medicine can be. i'll prolly start off with reppin my hood and saying im doing medicine for money, alcohol and the life of the west life. THUG LIFE

I interviewed LECOM on Jan. 11th, but i have not received any mail from them. Do you mind sharing your basic information, like MCAT and Academic background?
I think it really weird that they are asking the same question as before the interview about wheather LOR is from School advisor committee even after my interview. That really worries me. That means that they have not made decision on me?

I appreciate if anybody can input something regarding my situation.

So LECOM doesn't have dorms?

My interview is on Feb 25th...it's my first one ever! I'm very excited. I was done w all my secondaries at the end of Dec, but sadly haven't heard anything from other yet.

I'm guessing that pretty much any school I end up going to will require driving . . . I'm gonna have to get a drivers license. Living in NYC I had no reason to drive. ever. All this talk about garages got me on my toes. I might be able to go get a permit tomorrow. I can only imagine driving a car into a garage. cant wait 🙂

good luck everyone!

Gals,

I have to go suit shopping. I have one pants suit from Express which is nice, but I'm not crazy about it. Can you recommend any good designers/brands for women's suits? I would need size one and I'm not sure where I can get something nice in this size.

Also, I know that its freezing cold at LECOM, so would you wear boots to the interview? or nice shoes?

I wore suede boots, though the walk from the car to the building wasn't bad, so heels would be fine. As for suits, I tried on some nice looking ones at Theory, and at Calvin Klein. I bought mine from Jones New York, but they don't really carry the tiny sizes everywhere.

I also had trouble finding suits in smaller sizes. I found a nice Calvin Klein suit from Lord & Taylor; you can also find it at Macy's or Saks, or online. Its price is also relatively reasonable and it has a nice youthful structure. Highly recommend. 👍 Shoes or boots would be fine.

i was browsing the interview feedback website...alot of ppl mentioned the standard 9 questions that the panel asks pretty much all applicants..anyone have an idea of where i can find these questions?

couple of quick questions:

1) any interview advice tips??

2) how long after interviewing do you hear back?

THANK YOU 🙂

^^ on my interview feedback, I wrote out all the questions.. check for one dated 01/18/08 it has them all. And just relax, the interview, as long as you looked at the questions first, was very easy and relaxed.. they didn't try to trip you up. You supposedly go to committee the week after your interview and the letters go out that same day or by friday of that week.. however, for the 18th interview, the dean was out the week after so we havent received anything yet.. they will give you this info specific to you at the interview.

did you find it?? I haven't checked out the interview forum since its been down.. so I don't know if it got deleted.. if you didn't find it, i'll write them all out for you 🙂

Hey, good luck on your interview! When is it by the way?
I interviewed in early december and remember finding the "9 questions" on SDN, but after just searching for like 15 mintues I couldn't find a link for ya. Anyways, i just realized that I had them written down, so here they are:

1. Tell us something that isn't in your file.
2. Why medicine?
3. Why osteopathic medicine, and how do you see it as being holistic and beneficial?
4. How do you handle stress?
5. Give us an example of when your communication skills helped you/ someone else.
6. 3 strengths and 1 weakness?
7. Talk to us about your leadership roles. How are you a leader and team player?
8. Tell us about a conflict you have had and how you resolved it.
9. Summarize the article you just read.

Also, I would not recommend rehearsing these questions, because you wouldn't want to sound scripted. Instead just think about how you would answer them, and maybe jot down an initial phrase you would use to start conversation about a given question. Furthermore, keep in mind that your interviewers may ask additional questions to these, as well as a completely different list of questions. Fortunately at my interview I was asked the "9 questions", but a medical student I spoke to afterward told me that during his interview he was asked a completely different list of questions. I don't mean to worry you, I just wanna give you the heads up in case this situation presents itself. Chances are you'll get the standard "9 questions", but just in case you get some other ones, I don't want you to be caught off guard. So just read over your personal statements and AACOMAS application, and check out some of the additional questions posted on the SDN LECOM interview forum. Keep in mind all the reasons you'll be an excellent doctor, maintain confidence, and keep calm and you'll do great 🙂.
To answer you're other question, I received my acceptance letter 11 days after my interview. Well I hope that was helpful, and if you have any other questions, let me know and I'd be happy to help. Good luck!

thanks for all your guys help. this site is sooo helpful!
i've been interviewed before but just wanted to get a better idea of what to expect. wish me luck on friday 😀

Accepted! Received letter today, I picked PBL, but my letter says it is full and I have been placed in LDP.. I will be withdrawing from Erie as soon as I see my Bradenton letter in person.

eta. my interview was 01/18

I've been trying to cancel my interview to Erie for 2 weeks and I can't get it done. I phone, leave messages, email and still nothing, no dice, no one in the admissions office responds. I guess I'll just assume that they canceled me. I got accepted to Bradenton and PNWU so I really don't want to waste the money when I can already decide between PBL and lecture courses with my current acceptances.

I recently was granted an interview at Bradenton, but haven't heard anything from Erie. Should I expect an interview from them as well or are the 2 completely unrelated? how is there turnaround time?

thanks

I dont believe they work together, that's why you have to complete two separate applications. Although it is likely that if one branch is interested in you, the other might be as well. :luck:

I was accepted to Erie in the PBL program, but heard nothing from the Bradenton branch. Who knows, they might be looking for different aptitudes.

I received a rejection letter within 2 weeks of turning in the Bradenton app. However, I have an interview at Erie in a few days. Seems to me that they function independently during the admissions process.

awesome.

My husband received an interview invite from LECOM-Erie at the end of September and was straight out rejected from Bradenton a few weeks later.

Anybody send in all their forms yet? Also, do us guys have to go shirtless in OMM? ...cause I need to hit the gym again to rediscover my abs.

I had a little misunderstanding with the admissions office a few weeks ago. One of the ladies in the office recently contacted me and convinced me to rethink withdrawing, and to come to the interview. So, I'll be interviewing the 28th. I have a question for current students though. Do you wear scrubs in anatomy lab, or do you wear your business casual clothes with a lab coat on top? I can't imagine that they wouldn't let you wear scrubs, that just seems unhygenic and weird.

You'll be fine.

those stats are fine-- if you are applying for 09, just try to get your science gpa up.

wohoo just got an interview invite for the 29th, kinda far away though :-/ Can I call and see if I can take a cancellation's spot? Also, is the Lecture based curriculum full? I'm not a huge fan of PBL and might turn down my Bradenton interview because of it.... maybe I should just go and check it out anyway though? 😕

thanks!

No, PBL is full. I believe that the only spots open now are for the lecture based.
