I just got my acceptance letter today.

Steve

I think I ticked off the the person in charge of teh program. I emailed her this last weekend to get some more information about the program, but I didn't notice the D.Sc. after her hame so I just addressed the email without the the Dr. title infront of the name, this what I sent her, and then what I got back today:

Is the rest of the staff this moody? 😛

Congratulations on your acceptance! Have you heard anything in particular about the program? I know 2 people who are in it right now and they love the program. Any input?

fred

PS

rpames, if it makes you feel any better, Laura is really nice and she was extremely helpful. She actually called me to tell me that my acceptance letter was on the way. Good luck to you guys!

I don't know any of the details other than what was listed on the web site.

Laura got back to me today, she said 40 of the 47 in the program this last year were accepted into the DO program at LECOM. Of those that we not, 3 did not apply and 2 are still waiting approval from the dean. If I did the math correctly, that means so far, only 2 out of 47 were rejected.

Lets keep this quit so I can get in after next year. J/K.

If you don't mind, Fozzy40 and GODO(I assume you got in), would you tell me your stats. I know alot of Post-Bac boast really high acceptances to med school, but only accept those students that probable would have been accepted if they applied to the right schools the first time around.

If you don't want to tell me your stats, I understand, but if you know the profile of those accepted, I would appreciate it. Laura should get back to me tomarrow but I'm pretty impatient.

Thanks

Also, I was reading the goals of the DO program and it states that it wants to produce primary docs for the rural areas of Penn. I don't want to practice there, would that be a problem?

GPA 3.341
MCAT 19 (didnt study very well as you might have noticed)
Good ECs

As far as the primary care issue, im not sure. I dont think they can legally bind you to stay in Erie unless you sign something.

Fred

You're right about LECOM's mission to provide more primary care physicians in the Erie area. I've heard LECOM has one of the higher percentages for matching into primary care residencies. Many of my classmates are considering specialities. LECOM won't stop you from leaving the area for a residency in another state or choosing a speciality. Afterall, it's just a mission statement.

I am looking at applying for a pb program next year. Do you mind if I ask why you guys picked LECOM and what are some good points about LECOM. As of Right now I am looking at the program at PCOM. If you guys have any info, I'd love to hear form you.

Doc George,

I applied to LECOM's post-bacc program because I have 2 friends of mine who are currently in the program. They absolutely love the school, education, and environment in Erie. The cost of living is also pretty cheap compared to where I am, which is Northern Virginia. If you want to get into LECOM, I heard that this program is almost a "guarantee" as long as you do well in the program. Hope this helps.

Fred

is it true that the classes for the lecom post bac program is at night? because I found this at the web site.
The BSPP is a two-semester, non-degree course of study designed to enhance the science
background of participating students. However, the BSPP is an approved certificate program authorized by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Education. Classes are held daily Monday through Thursday from 6:00pm - 9:00pm for two 15-week periods in LECOM's state-of-the-art medical school facilities. Some classes are also held on Fridays. Classes are not held on designated holidays, and other holidays or occasions as so identified.

I'm not in the LECOM post-bac program, but I am a LECOM student (now an MS-II-woo hoo!). And yes, the post-bacs classes are held at night. I think they start somewhere around 6:00 or 6:30 and end somewhere around 9:00. (I'm not sure of the exact times, that's just when I notice they are there when I am at LECOM studying.) In my class the post-bacs seem to have had an advantage for the first semester but when we started getting into the systems it seemed like everyone was pretty much on the same page, but it will definitely help you to have all of the material fresh in your memory (some of the professors even use the same lectures for the post bacs and for the MS-Is). Good luck to you! 😀

Oops, I just noticed that you had typed the times! So yes, they are definitely from 6:00 to 9:00. Sorry, I had my last neuro exam yesterday and my brain is still kind of fried.... 🙄

I just went up to LECOM this past weekend to tour the campus and look for apartments. It looks like there are making a lot of renovations to the school. It should look pretty nice once it is all done. Last year's post-bacc class had about 47 people and she said that this year's post bacc class will be almost 100. She also said there are plenty of slots available!

Fred

Hi all, LECOM post-bacc's for September. i just received my acceptance to this program for the 2002-2003 yera. I will be moving there from New York City, will anyone else be making that transition ? Also, It specifically stated in my letter that they "expected me to take the MCAT's again no later than April 2003. Did anyone else have this in their letter ? I am planning on taking it in August but only if I am consistently scoring 9+'s on Princeton Review Tests. Does anyone have accurate acceptance numbers or interview numbers for students that complete this class ? Will we be eligible for the 2003 entering class or will we have to wait until next year ? Does anyone have any other info than what's on the website ?

I had the same statement on my admissions letter, but I have to take them in August.

Bonding Boy and GODO,

Have you guys taken the MCAT before?

Fred

bonding boy I sent you a PM

Hi all LECOMer's,

I am looking forward to seeing you all. Sorry Jean, i never got a pm ? To answer your question Fozzy my stats are as follows:

Undergraduate 3.39 - 3.41 Science
Graduate - Master's at NYU - 3.51
MCAT 20
Non-tradional student 32 yrs old, will be traveling from Staten Island, NEW York.

I have been studying for the MCAT every single day, I have quit my job and am studying full-time.
However, despite studying 12-14 hours a day, if I am not ready to do well by August, (I will get an idea if I am from my Princeton Review Full lengths), if not I will wait until April. It is explicit in the letter that they will take the April scores, but will it be for 2003 ? How many spots will be left ? How do you guys feel about the area ? I read your thread Fozzy about visiting there, can you give me some details.
I am looking forward to meeting you all. We are there for a reason and we will make good on the error we made on the MCAT and overcome that 6 hrs.

Bonding Boy,

Well, I dont have all that much more to say about the program. Laura Sloan, a coordinator for the program, said that they will be accepting more students this year into the program. I think they are almost doubling the number of acceptees to about 90 or so. Dont quote me on that but that is what she told me. Ms. Sloan said that most of the students thoroughly enjoyed the program and felt that it was a good preparation for medical school. She said that the difficulty level of the program is not quite like med student courses but is a nice intermediate step that primes you for the typical medical school workload. Most med students that I talked to said that the hardest part about med school was the transistion to the life style. That being said, it makes sense that dedicated students of the post bacc program should make that adjustment relatively easy.

When I visited there, I noticed that there was a lot of renovation going on. New lecture halls, a new library, new bookstore, etc. The new lecture halls, I believe, are for the med students but they were still pretty nice. You do have to wear a shirt and tie for classes and they do take attendence. Im not too fond of this but this is a really small issue compared to the bigger picture. She said that there will also be a lot more students on campus since they are launching a new pharmacy program at LECOM.

As far as Erie goes, I come from a suburban area so the transistion for me will not be too different. In my opinion, it is a small town atmosphere but very peaceful. The people were extremely nice also.

Im not a alcoholic or anything, but when you need to blow off some steam they have some pretty nice bars. Cheap prices and good atmosphere.

Overall, I liked it!

Well, that's all that I can think of right now but feel free to ask me anything else.

Fred

Fozzy:

Thanks for all of your imput. They are going to double the size of the class, huh ? I guess that also means that it will be harder to get into the D.O program even if you do very well in the course. Important; have you started the process of financial aid ? I have the paperwork , am i am going to start going over it ? Any advice? I guess they estimate the cost of education as being around 24,000 so that would approx. the amout we are allowed to borrow. Do you have any more info regarding this ?
Also, what do you know about the housing situation ? I am hearing that the cost of living is relatively low in Lake Erie. i hope that is the case, although I have some money set aside. I was also informed that classes will begin shortly after Labor day. Are you taking the MCAT again and if so, when ? i am studying feverishly. i just got a 29 on a full length practice , so the work seems to be paying dividends. Anyone else have any imput regarding LECOM's post bacc. program

Bonding Boy,

The fiancial paperwork is easy. You just have to fill out 2 or 3 papers and send back your 2001 tax return. The max amount I was able to take out was 24,300.

As far as housing, I have seen rent range from 320 to 600 dollars. I have not secured an apartment yet, but will be looking shortly. I think Laura was putting together a "roommate wanted" list if you did not know, but that was probally mentioned on your acceptance letter.

I have to take the MCAT's again in August, and am studying hard as well.

Good luck and see you in September.

Steve

Steve,

Are you taking a prep course i am enrolled in TPR and I am finding it to be great. (of course the scores will tell the whole truth) Laura has sent me some housing info. Are you planning to make a trip there beffore calsses begin ? I would like to but I think I am not going to kill a whole day there when i could be studying MCAT material. So, I am going to wait until after August. I hear the class is going to be much larger i hope that dosen't hurt our chances too much. You are taking the test in Aug, did your letter say that you could take it no later than April 2003 ? I have been told by a former stduent who has been fantastic in giving me some details that it would not be in our best interests to wait ? What type of study schedule have you put together ?

Looks like I'll be joining all of you in BSPP at LECOM. I'm still on their alternate list as well as Nova's. Hopefully I can still get in to one of these med schools but if not I'll be thrilled to be with you! Laura Slone called me on Monday and I received my official letter in the mail yesterday. Looking forward to meeting all of you.

For those of you taking the MCAT i August, when are you guys going to LECOM to seek housing for September ?

Hello to you all. Congrats to your acceptances to the program. I'm still looking into LECOM's and University of Louisville's one. I try to compare the classes these school offer during the year. Would you all happen to know exactly what classes will be taught, grade structure etc... Can these classes be used toward MS degree? What advantages the post bacc program offer? SInce you guys must have thought about this more than I am, I would appreciate any insight.
Thanks.

About housing, I have already secured an apartment at Grenada. I suggest you guys find a place ASAP b/c with this new pharmacy program you can bet that more places will be taken. I found that the cost of living is pretty cheap so hopefully money wont be too much of an issue.

Fred

Fozzy, did you secure a place when you went there or over the phone / I want to take advantage of study time every day, so I will probably go after the MCAT. Is there anyone out there who got accepted to the program and is retaking the exam in April instead of August ? my letter said to retake it by April, 2003 ?

When is the deadline for the postbac program? Do all schools, both MD and DO, have these programs?

I went to the LECOM website but didn't see a deadline. The requirements for admission seem pretty easy to get in. Is there an interview process?

I am on the LECOM alternate list and still waiting for that wonderful day when they will call me and let me know either way.

I chose to go through Public Health to get my masters as my backup plan -- since it would help me career wise if I never get the chance to get in. Trust me, I do want to get in and I'll keep applying til I do, but I'm also realistic and if I don't get in after several attempts, then I'll take it as a sign from God that I should do something else. So that's why I chose Public Health.

Hopefully, I can get in after I get my Masters. If not, then Post bac programs seem like the right way to go.

Another question, if you attend a post bac program at a particular school, will it help to get to another school or is it just helpful to get into that school you're taking the post-bac at?

Hi...I was just wondering if anyone has heard if there has been any movement on the alternate list or when we might hear something? 😕

Bonding Boy,

I am assuming you are talking about securing a spot @ Grenada. Actually, I went there and told the leasing office that I am very serious about getting the place but didnt send them a deposit until later. I am supposed to sign my lease on August 14th and will probably move in at the end off August.

Foo,

I do not think that there is a deadline for the program. I had a friend that was waitlisted at LECOM last year but didnt get in. So she applied to the program the day before it started and was accepted. She did talk directly with the department to see what her options were so my suggestion is to do the same. The application fee is $100 but it definitely is a good contingency plan in my eyes.

Hope this was helpful.

Fred

Fozzy: Actually, i wasn't just referring to the Granada apts ? But on the subject I guess you have seen them ? Can you tell me anything about them ? Also, are you definitely going to take the August MCAT ? I know the letter said to take before APRIL 2003, but I have been told that it is better to take it in April ? What is your game plan ?

Greetings future LECOM BSPP students! I can answer some of the questions posted about the BSPP program. I am a Pennsylvania resident wishing to practice medicine in the rural areas of PA, and will be joining you this fall at LECOM. After my recent visit to Erie I must say that LECOM is a very nice school, whereas It is much cleaner, and safer than any city medical school. Mrs. Sloan was indeed very nice, and from what she said I assume Dr. Nassiri is not nice. Like some of you I was told that I may take the MCAT no later than April 2003. I was also told that this was not so good, because there is no latent application year and we are to file our AACOMAS before we start this fall. Now, for all of you who are taking your MCAT this August you will be in much better shape because all you will have to worry about is your performance in the BSPP. Those of us that are taking the MCAT in April 2003 are going to have it tough because we will not have much time to review. I was also told that there is a cut-off MCAT score of a 22, or 21, so this probably means that even if you do tremendously well in the program, but score less than this you will not gain admission to the D.O. program. I was told that they are going to have an alternative healthcare career fair for those who are not accepted into the D.O. program. There are going to be 75 of us, so only the best will go on. The BSPP courses are going to be broken up into sections this year, this means that we will be starting with microbio, then immuno, phys, and then anat. I do not know if this is the exact order but I do know that we are starting with micro. For those of you that are staying at the Grenada apartments I heard that there is some type of nonsense going on there. I was told this by the Carlton Court apartments, so I do not know much more than that. It might be in your best interest to look into that. Good luck to everyone, and I hope to see you all in the fall.

King Uther,

What did you hear was the problem at Granada? Im staying there and i am curious.

fred

Hi fred, I'm not sure what the problem is at the Granada apartments. When I was making arrangements at the Carlton court apartments they told me on the phone that there was some type of nonsense going on over there. I did not ask them what the problem was, so I thought I would just pass on the information.🙂

is anyone else staying in granada?

fred

Also, about the letter stating you have to take the MCAT before April 2003....my acceptance letter didnt state that. Did everyone else's say that?

Fred

Fozzy, my letter stated that I should take the MCAT no later than April 2003. I would love to take it in August 2002, but there is just not enough time to review, therefore my only chance for a better score will be in April. Laura Sloan told me it was better to take the MCAT in August 2002, because taking the MCAT into April will yield results sometime in June, which is very late in the application year. 😀

Hello all,

I was just woundering if any of you know of any other good places to live in Erie. I have a housing book, but it is out of date and my internet search did not yield too many places either.

steve

Does anyone who has gone through the program have any suggestions on how to prepare for the program? Things I should brush up on? CPU requirements? Thanks again.

Fred

i heard alot about lecom's postbac program and many of its graduates getting into medschool. I am deciding if i should apply to lecom's postbac or pharmacy school. Any advice?
