Can I beg that we all cut down on the abbreviations please? ED, FU, etc. Like seriously, not everyone here is quick to figure out all these medical/med school terminology, especially some of us that have just now begun to transition into the medical field. I feel like i need a medical dictionary to read some posts. Fellow posters, please be considerate. Not everyone is as smart as you are! Stop showing off 😀

is FU short for **** u? hahahaha in all seriousness though...

what is FU?

(and no i did not write the F word...i just used astrickes haha)

If you make it in to medicine you're in for a rough ride, my friend. Medicine is an acronym soup. Pull random letters out of the air and string them together; it probably is an acronym used in medicine.

in all serious what does ORM stand for (google failed me on this one)

"If"? More like "When" i make it into...
My ride will be alot smoother than yours 😛

How's about you just sit back and learn something. The acronyms used here are not that complicated. And if you can't figure it out from google or context, people are usually happy to define it for you.

And we're not showing off. It's just how it's done. Typing out emergency department on my phone just for the random new guy (or another fun acronym - the FNG) takes way too long and everybody else understands ED.

OMG, FYI it's important to pick up these key things. FWIW, it'll come in handy whether you shadow a MD or DO in the ED, you are a ORM or even a URM, are doing a SMP, studying for the MCAT, in a SURF program, dealing with AMCAS, preparing for an MMI, ETC. YMMV, but it's not too bad to get into the groove.

This may become my new signature. Well done.

Ouch!!

and what's OP?

OP means original poster. I think you may be a troll. Judging by your response, you seemed to understood who he was talking about. Then again, context clues are very helpful. :=|:-):

cc: op c/o HA 2/2 abbrev use

a/p: op advised to use google, f/u 2d

Took me years to figure out what the HOTDOG acronym was.

Means not an underrepresented minority. Over Represented Minority (white, asian).

Is white really considered ORM? Whites are over-represented in medicine but not a minority. I always thought ORM was East or South Asian.

Just had a thought. Is it Under-Represented in Medicine or Under-Represented Minority?

Technically, it used to be underrepresented minority but switched to being underrepresented in medicine in 2003 https://www.aamc.org/initiatives/urm/

On SDN, most posters use the old definition though rather than the new one. ORM is whites and Asians on SDN

I agree that the acronyms can be confusing, but learning them makes you more informed and I find the meaning sticks better. THC > tetrahydrocannabinol. OP needs to get off it🙄

OP - TL;DR. Srsly, WTF?

OMG that was LOL funny! JMHO, though.

Yeah. I always see f/u in chart notes...at some point you have to be able to either pick it up from context and/or look it up. New one I learned today: RTC (returned to clinic).

It's hard to google FU or ED or OP
Oh, sorry...let me help you with that exceedingly difficult problem:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=OP
Oh, hey, look at that, it's the second link, and you don't even have to click on it!
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=F/U
Whaaa? It's the first one this time?!? And I still don't have to click?!?
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ED+acronym
Whoa, whoa, man...this one was hard. I had to think and add a word to my search before I could get it to come up with a definition that fit the context without requiring me to click a link.

🙄

I'm surprised more people didn't jump on this hilairously pathetic comment.

Also, OP, "when" you get into medical school, just be sure to let everyone on your team know that you would prefer that they not use abbreviations. I'm sure they'll accommodate you - since you're an integral part of the team and you're such a badass that they should be happy to have you.

I have standard lecture/presentation on med school application terminology that I give called

So MS-2, a PGY-1, and a DO walk into a bar

"So MS-2, a PGY-1 and DO walk into a bar. They pass a table with an RN, an RT, a PA, a PT, an NP, and a CRNA watching a DPM and DDS arguing about which is licensed to removed a foot from a mouth. As they sit down The MS-2 complains “OMG! This USMLE Step 1 is kicking me in the butt. I thought keeping a high GPA and scoring well the MCAT was tough in the VR, the PS and the BS, and that aint no BS. Then that AMCAS with the PS, the EC, and getting those LORs, especially from the OChem PhD who was an SOB. Then all those secondaries. I need some TLC. “Dude, chill,” replies the PGY-1, who was a IMG/FMG with an MD from AUC. He wanted to go to an SMP but he went DIY instead. “Wait until you get hit with other stuff from NBME like SHELF, STEP 2, CK and CS. And I had to go thru ECFMG then ERAS and the NRMP to see if I could get into any ROADES on Match Day. Just wait until your running around trying do an H&P when an OD on PCP or LSD who crashed his SUV comes into the ICU nearly DOA, Turns out he had an STD too.” “TMI!, You wimpy allopathic types always get me PO’d with your complaining,” says the DO who went to TUNCOM-NV, “FYI, I had to do all that, plus 300 hours of OMM and COMLEX. I’m BE/BC and I will take my boards ASAP but I think I’ll become a fellow; I found something good in FREIDA.”

:boom:

Don't worry, OP is going to have a much smoother ride than us (whatever that means), NN. He was asking about going to the Caribbean and UK in another thread and can't grasp acronyms but he is a premed superstar.

lol look at the definition for

Burnett’s Law
: As an SDN Forums discussion grows longer, the probability of being told, “you will be a terrible doctor” or, “I feel bad for your future patients” approaches 1.

muahaha I like how that is actually a definition on there

Like seriously!
Makes me wonder too. Comments like this make me work even harder.

The good news is, my ride in med school will be alot smoother than yours NickNaylor
