Let's make a Pact

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been lurking these forums for awhile but anyways let me just introduce myself, I'm a second med student currently in RCSI. Like many of you here I was also in the same situation waiting for replies from Ireland. I actually only applied to Trinity and RCSI. I interviewed around the same time as most of you for RCSI in around February in San Francisco. That Peter Nealon guy was so nice, I remember talking to him for awhile after my interview. Anyways I just wanted to say that ABP was quite frank with me when I called in around March to ask about my application. I remember them congratulating me on getting into RCSI but that I unfortunately was rejected from Trinity. I'm just thinking for the people that haven't got in is that those who haven't received a response yet should keep faith and that one way or other you will get in... Ciao...

I could call, but I am afraid. They probably do know some of our fates by now. 😱
After your RCSI acceptance, did they still mail you an official Trinity rejection letter??

btw, I read a very brief review in Nat'l Geographic Traveler---a/b great places to eat in Cork. It's in the April '07 issue. I was there years ago, but very briefly. It's so picturesque and beautiful!!!

Jesus Christmas. Nothing in the mail yesterday, mail hasn't come yet today. I'm dyin here!

BTW, as an update, my girlfriend called me back about 30 minutes after my first text. She said it didn't vibrate or anything, and she was going to hang out with some friend from work (he had to stay at the office alone for like 4 hours waiting for a locksmith to break into some guy's office that they fired), but she came right over after she found out I was having an attack.

We were supposed to see a movie last night, but she fell asleep at 9:30. 🙄 I'm going to demand some activity tonight, dammit! I'm depressed and need an outlet!

I would call, but I'm afraid they'd tell me I got accepted and then mail me a rejection letter the next week. 🙄

Sucks to hear your story McDuck, hoping the best for you on the UCD acceptances. But anyways, when I found out that I was rejected from Trinity College I was a bit pissed cause that meant I would need to pay an extra 10,000 Euros in fees (I'm Canadian btw so I have to pay international fees), but RCSI is okay so far. From that phone call I think I got my acceptance package 1 week later from RCSI and then the rejection letter from Trinity a week later. I also was waiting from University of Toronto at that time too, which I unfortunately didn't get into🙁 , which was the reason why I just said to hell with it and called ABP to find out whether I got in or not.

If I get rejected, I'm going to fly to Ireland and demand to be reconsidered.

 no kidding. Double disappointment there. Good thing that you're doing something to take your mind off of the situation at hand.

Let me be a little more annoying...but do you think that rejections from Trinity are going out on a rolling basis??? I mean, in all honesty, how many could the ABP possibly do in one sitting?! 😱 I am assuming that they're going out as requested (periodically by the schools)???
I wish I wish I wish...for Trinity!!!!

I have no clue. I think 2 people heard from UCC the other day, and someone heard from Trinity. I'm not sure if they are sending them out randomly, whenever the schools mandate, etc. I wish that if you got rejected from all the schools they'd just send them out together so you don't have to wait and hope.

I'm seriously considering going to Ireland to beg for a spot if I don't get accepted.

Yeah, we're North Americans too. The fees are high, but some out-of-state schools in the states are close to $40,000 a year (tuition and books)....and who is to say that they're any better?!! I would beg to differ honestly.

Ireland has history, the schools have been teaching medicine since the 18th c. or maybe earlier. So, all together, it winds up being slightly more.
Although, RCSI is very, very expensive.

Please tell us how you like it...or anything else you find relevant to the applicants 🙂
U of T and all Canadian schools are so difficult to get into.....too few spots, too few schools there!

exactly. I don't want to keep hoping and be faced with one BIG FAT disappointment. Better not to draw this out if rejected already. it seems like some of the letters were held back until a certain date......interesting....letter written march 14th, sent out a week or so later???

go for it! Or just call the schools.
Hopefully, you will not have to worry about that.
:luck: :luck: :luck:

It was dated March 14 and postmarked March 23, so they waited what, 9 days to send it.

Calling the schools won't do anything. I'll call them to let them know I'm coming.

lol honestly if you're not here for school or anything Dublin doesn't offer much in terms of touristy stuff to do. The Guiness Storehouse is a joke (I thought they show you how that stuff was made but it was a museum instead), Churches lose their appeal after you see them everyday (I live like 5 minutes from St. Patrick's Cathedral) and meh nothing much else... besides drinking and it's damn expensive here... But other people may have different opinions then me... Anyways I really hope you get in McDuck, I'm crossing my fingers for you

I am starting to believe that ABP encourages people to apply even after the deadline date just so that they can extract as much application fees as possible.

I was told verbally that I am a "very competetive applicant, and I should definitly apply" 2 MONTHS AFTER THE DEADLINE !!!!!

It seemed very encouraging at that point, but now I understand what "very competetive" really meant.

Anyway, I am over this rejection. Hopefully I will get accepted to TCD next year, when I will actually apply before the deadline.
If not, I might just join McDuck, and travel to Dublin in demand of admission.

If they told you that, then you are a competitive applicant! I don't think it matters whether you apply early or late in this case---they just started reviewing apps a month or so ago, maybe earlier.
The problem lies in the fact that medical schools are looking for a broad collection of students---some at the top, some in the middle and so on....the chances are limited everywhere solely based on the number of applicants once you are at that competitive range. I am sure that you will get in somewhere, and if TCD is your dream, then TCD it will be. It's too bad that TCD doesn't admit for the fall and spring semesters (thinking of Carib. schools at this moment). I can imagine the disappointment and I fear the same.....as I know that these letters are going out and it's hard to say just how many people we are up against.
Best of :luck:

It ends up working out well.

I had not even applied to local schools (USA) . Atleast now I can apply to both US schools and many other foreign schools to keep other options in case my first choice doesn't fall through.

If ABP tells you that you are a competitive applicant, you might be a competitive applicant, but they most certainly want your money. It's definitely a business, so I can see why they'd encourage people to apply even if they know there probably isn't a great chance of success. However, I believe that one or two people have posted on here saying they were accepted after applying in March. So, it is possible.

If you don't get accepted anywhere, gmac, and I get rejected from UCD, we should totally go out there and demand admission. What kind of a-hole turns down two guys that just crossed the Atlantic friggin Ocean on zero notice?

 Imagine what long-term profits the schools make from North Americans and even more so--from the Middle East.
I still wonder how they make the selection---in a timely manner---considering the reviewing process began not too long ago...otherwise, many more rejection letters would have been out by February or so. And just how many applicants are there this year??! I was looking at the posts from 2006...and many people already had an acceptance by the end of March. 😕

If ABP wasn't mentioned on the UCD website, I'd be beginning to think this whole thing is a scam. Of course, I may just be bitter.

I can't believe we're 15 minutes from the end of April Fool's Day, and no one has made some kind of sick joke.

Any word from any of the schools yet today?

No, how about you?? There was a lot of mail, but no thin envelope yet. Holding my breath.

Haven't heard anything from any schools yet. Not sure if it's taking longer to make its way to Western Canada, but I just want to know where I'll be going when Fall rolls around.

I am sure that they know something by now. Yes, it may take a tad longer to get your mail to western Canada from Ireland or even Newport.
I am too scared to call at the moment. I get excited whenever I see Fed-Ex trucks in the area.

Alright guys, here's the deal.

I just called Atlantic Bridge and asked them to explain to me the ins and outs of when the decisions will be made and here is what I got.

1) If the student requests it, the courier service used is Federal Express (not UPS or DHL or ARAMEX).

2) They are at the beginning of the admissions season now and they will be sending offers out for the next 6 months.

3) The schools in Ireland will send everything over to ABP and they will take it from there.

4) Offers are sent in order of competitiveness. If you are a highly competitive applicant, you will be sent your offer sooner rather than later; and vice versa.

5) The universities in Ireland have a rolling admissions process, so even if you don't get an offer sooner rather than later, if the classes are filled then you are effectively rejected.

Pretty standard I suppose, but I thought I would share.

Mmmm, so what happened to what UCD said when you called them? Didn't you say they told you decisions will be out no later than second week of April? Does all this mean that starting now, we could get responses anytime up to 6 months from now?

Yeah, about that... ha ha

Here's what I'm thinking. Maybe UCD, TCD, RCSI, UCC, NUIG will send ABP a list of applicants in a rank. And then to admit a certain number, wait for replies, admit another group, etc until the classes are full.

This is an interesting program this ABP...

😱 😱 😱
If this is based on competitiveness, then those who were rejected were rejected for other reasons---like the number of applicants. So what exactly was the benefit of applying last fall??? In the states at least, people are reviewed as soon as the app comes in, invited for an interview if they meet the cut-off and so on, etc etc. "applying early" is named so for approp. reasons.
I wonder where in the world my app. actually is right now. For all I know it could be under a stack of apps that were submitted two weeks ago. 😕 😕 I need a smiley with tears.

So basically, you don't know anything.

All I know is that people are getting responses now, so it's only a matter of time before we all hear. :luck:

Yeah, pretty much. I was under the impression that it was a rolling admissions process, but apparently that isn't the case. I believe that there were a few people that posted on here saying they applied late and got accepted around this time. If it was a rolling process, they wouldn't hear until everyone else.

I don't really care what the process is, I just want to find out whether or not I'll be in Ireland this fall. At this point, I almost prefer a rejection.

I was so hopeful and now I am feeling as though a rejection were to fall through the sky at any moment. I am sorry that I am such a mope, but....I just want to know sooner than later....and positive news over sad news.

Eh, I don't really care too much. If I go there, I get to go to medical school in Ireland. If I stay here, I get to move in with my girlfriend, work at a trauma center, and study whatever the hell I want. I win either way, so I just want to know already, dammit.

If they're more competitive, their app goes to the top of the pile. Basically, if a school gets 500 apps for 60 spots they'll offer 60 people spots, keep the next best 140 people as back-up, and send out 300 rejection letters because they know that somewhere in those 200 people they'll get 60 people who want to come. I made those numbers up just to explain the point.

So it's not first come first serve.

Also, if you didn't get in and are re-applying next year, maybe think about sitting the MCAT again. I know UCC uses that as one of their primary filtering criteria. If you get mid-low 30's on the MCAT you will definetly have a chance.

I still find this to be speculative. The hypotheses change on a daily basis.

Well, I'm applying for 6-year program, so the MCAT is a non-issue for me. Anyway, if I don't get in, I'm not re-applying next year. It's this year or no year.

Trinity said two more weeks. 😀

And in 2 weeks, they'll say the same thing again! I've been calling them for ages, its always 2-3 weeks.. and in 2-3 weeks, its ANOTHER 2-3 weeks! But yeah you're right, i rang them up a few days ago and thats what i got. Good :luck: to you all!

 Well this time it sounds about right....since the ABP said mid-April, it must be mid-April. much :luck:

Yeah, they did say mid-April back in Feb. Today I kind of got another push towards Ireland. We were doing an angioplasty and the surg was having a hard time, so I suggested something and taught him how to use it, and it worked. For a few hours, I was really gung-ho again.

Way to go! That's awesome. I love surgery. Right now I am solely in a diagnostic clinic.

I've had about 10 dreams about being in Ireland, hate them! They're good dreams mind you, but they build up false hope! Just thought i'd share that. 😀

Yeah, I've had Ireland dreams. You wake up, and you're still at home and realize that you haven't even gotten in yet. 🙁

Don't know if this old news, but I got an email from the admissions officer saying that UCD hasn't made any rejections or acceptances. All the others though have made their initial round of rejections. It also said that no one of the Irish schools had made any offers yet.

I think they should get on it. :d

hmmm i definatly have a friend that got an acceptance from UCD. But i have not recieved an acceptance or a rejection from them. But RCSI told me they would let me know my status 10 days after my interview?! well, it has been 11. Has any that was intervied heard yet??? rejected or accepted???? does this mean i am waitlisted???

Did you see the acceptance letter? ABP and the school itself definitely said several times that they haven't made any decisions yet. I think your friend is either pulling your leg, or maybe he means UC-D, as in University of California-Davis.

I don't think waiting 11 days instead of 10 is a big deal. I think it's just the way it works with this process. They say two weeks, it really means a month or two. Just go with the flow.

patrece, i also had an interview and haven't heard either way yet... i believe they told me 2-3 weeks, and I was on the last day of interviews. it seems all of the irish schools are shooting for mid-April.
