So, I have an interview at IUSD. My dentist, who I shadowed for 40+ hours, wants to write me a rec letter. I dont really need one (because I was an idiot and filled up my four letters maximum by asking professors) but I think a letter from an alumni would be great. If I ask him to send it directly to dental school even though I have an interview, will it be frowned upon? Is it overkill?

Hmm, I wonder if they'd even look at it if you sent it? I personally wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure we all have things we could have done differently with our apps. If you feel like your situation is desperate, you might send it, but it could be seen as a sign of desperation and probably wouldn't help much. Sorry, that sounds so negative, but you're probably fine!

I'd say send it. I had that done. There's nothing wrong with it, how can it hurt you? If anything it shows how badly you want to attend that school. The school's like enthusiasm; they don't want to be accepting someone that doesn't really want to be there. This only strengthens the fact that you do. I wouldn't go over the top and have more than 5-6 letters, but just one more can't hurt.

a letter from alum cant hurt..but I only think it helps if they are a big supporter of the school. Yet, even then its no guarantee. I had my dentist write me a letter of rec and he even wrote me another one to his alma mater/talked to people he still works with at the school and i still got rejected. Connections dont hurt...but they wont make or break the adcoms decision.

Send it...if he is in good standing with the school (I assume he is due to his willingness to send the letter), then the letter should help. At the very least, it is an ice breaker during the interview. It is likely that someone there remembers him or her...
