So I have been working/shadowing at my uncle's office for quite some time now (over 200 hrs), and I was wondering if getting a LOR from him is going to look bad? (seeing that he is family) I dont know if this matters, but my LOR's are going to be a compilation in the end. I'm trying to figure it out quick b/c I am planning to apply this cycle.

It says in the AADSAS Application instructions that getting a LOR from a relative is frowned upon.

Frowned upon is the nice way to say your application will get thrown out unless you have a 30 and a 4.0 minimum.

There are admissions panels, some on YouTube, on applying that answered this question. The committee members stressed that it does not help your application.

I totally agree that it would hurt you. But on the other hand, how do adcom know that Dr. X is applicant Y's uncle? Especially if he's your mom's brother then you two don't share the same last name...

There is a section in your application to name family members in dentistry. I guess you can leave your uncle out of that section, especially if he does not share the same last name.

They'll find out one way or another

This is anecdotal of course and I agree with everyone above, but it could also depend on the school. Ex: My gen. dent uncle is an alumni from NYU, I called and they said it'd be good to have him mail in a LOR in addition to what i'm sending through AADSAS

You mean like a second LOR from the same dentist?

My AADSAS has 2 professors an ortho and an employer, they said it would be okay to send an additional LOR by mail from my uncle

Signatures are for squares

this was all very helpful, thank you everyone!! I was uneasy sending a LOR from a family member, so i decided to get a different one. But, I may send the family member's LOR to the school I want to get into/he attended
